Yep still rocking the C5Z and still showing those 5.0s and 392s the old school tail lights. And includes the unique nostalgic look since there's barely any of them on the road anymore so people don't even know what it is since most of the C5s on the road are the hatchbacks.
It’s amazing even though the c5 z06 had shot tires it made those numbers. With good tires I bet it would have gone faster than the grand sport. The c5 it’s stupid light.
It's truly amazing how American cars have evolved from being straight line performance lugnuts to world class sports cars and supercars. Man it's good to be an American.
"STILL GOT MOTOR"... lame. do a real test with tires and then when u upload it, if the video says "this isn't really a comparison test" then do not put "comparison test" as the title...
Bought a new 2019 Corvette Grand Sport, with a MANUAL TRANSMISSION, and it’s a great car! Huge power, fantastic handling, and with the magnetic ride control, the car goes from track stiff to cruising smooth in an instant. My wife even asks when we can go for drives in the Corvette Grand Sport, and that rarely happens with my NSX. Buy one, if at all possible, life is short.
@GhostCell07 The engine is actually lighter than most engines with the same output and far less prone to failure. Most people think that a smaller engine is going to be lighter. But to build it to output like a bigger engine, the reinforcement and add-ons like turbos and intercoolers nullifies the weight advantage pretty easily.
I don't see why an American would care. Holden is a GM company. The LS9 is based on a Custom motor? The LS series of motors started as a basic design by Ed Cole in the mid 1950's....but it saw life in a car for the first time in 1997 I believe. So the LS design is very old on paper. The LS9 is an LS3 base. So to say it's an Australian design would be stretching. A lot of people are sick of the bias against American cars, the Corvette more than any other. It's more than earned it's respect.
I saw a test on a magazine where that Z06 Carbon beats the GTR in braking and 1/4 mile times and the slamon. Now 2 vettes are beating the GTR. They cant complain about price anymore!
My choice is the Grand Sport. 436 horsepower is more than enough for me and the spine-tingling baritone snarl of the LS3 is worth what you end up paying for this car.
Question about the C5 Z06. Were those fairly new tires because I am surprised that you would say a track tuned car such as the C5 Z06 would be sliding all over the track with marginal grip unless it was fitted with marginal tires.
Actually, the 2002 Z06 could hit 60 mph in 3.9 sec (chevrolet claim), do the quarter mile in 12.2 sec @ 116mph (mag tests), pull over 1G on the skidpad (chevrolet claim, numerous tests) with GOOD TIRES. It also ran around the Nurburgring in 7:56, driven by Dave Hill. That's only 13 seconds slower than the C6 Z06's time, on a 12 mile road course. So don't sleep on the C5 Z, she's still a beast! lol
Mr. Walton, you definitely needed to check the tires before entering the track. If you need tires, get tires. Also, it seems that you needed to practice throttle control if you were going to talk about the cars lack of track traction. Know when and how to properly apply throttle after you have gone through the apex. Specially in a car as torque happy as a Corvette. Knowing how do that is something I learned the hard way myself, and if you are to properly report then you must learn it too.
Here is the current list of non benchmarking autos driving around for the tourists. Seems to be very short of certain makes. 1. Radical SR8LM 6:48.00 2. Radical SR8 6:55.00 3. Gumpert Apollo Speed 7:11.57 4. Dodge Viper SRT-10 ACR 7:12.13 5. Lexus LFA Nurburgring Package 7:14.64 6. Donkervoort D8 RS 7:14.89 7. Porsche 911 GT2 RS 7:18.00 8. Radical SR3 Turbo 7:19.00 9. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 7:19.63 10. Nissan GT-R 7:21.00 11. Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Z07 Package 7:22.68
We're going to test these cars to see which is faster. The car I don't like will be driven on 4 temporary spare tires, for science. Given how close the C5 Z06 was to the C6 GS in handling even with cardboard tires, it might have shown up the fancy GS had it been wearing fresh rubber. We can't have that, can we?
Wow, Z06 should be hitting mid-low 3's 0-60. Then again, they did say it was a "prototype". Lightweight carbon LS7 with magnetic shocks, I can't wait to see what that thing can do on a race track!
The new Carbon Z06 sounds far better than the previous one. It sounds almost as good as the ZR1. So if people aren't considering it a muscle car, but a sports car that's almost a super car... I don't see why people just don't call it a sub-supercar like the Lotus lineup and they're mostly about handling an acceleration. The C6 gen got the handling down, has more speed, and just about everything else.
The Radical and the Gumpert Apollo are pretty much street legal race cars. I put them in the same category as the Ultima GTR. Notice though, that cars that actually compare to the Corvette and the Viper... (Nissan GTR, Porsche's, Ferraris, Pagini Zonda, Lamborghini's, etc., are all slower at the ring.
an extra $25k because it lapped the 'Ring under 8 minutes. To those companies the only thing that matters is if they can make money, and running at the 'Ring doesn't make you money. No one that is already thinking about over-paying for a BMW/Audi/MB is actually concerned about the performance, because they'll never drive it to the limit. They want it to look pretty, and run without problems.
@Janusha ............OK. I lived there and you read it. Perhaps things there have changed since 2005 (when I was there last). When I was in Germany, there was a variety of interested parties (both factory and rich owners) that used this track to "benchmark" their cars against known competitive runs. The reason for this is the length of the track, the number and types of corners this track offers. A lot can be learned about a car at this facility. On the other hand, who cares ?
@AutoBahnForever I've been to the 'Ring and been on a few "runs," and I loved every second of it, even when I was following the speed limits. He's Norwegian so who knows what his problem is. He's probably gone snow blind, and given up on being a productive member of humanity.
to be perfectly honest i have nothing against any car, i'll happily drive anything with 4 wheels, and the occasional 3. i just love seeing excuses people give when i decide to bait them, and the fact to fanboy ratio. i found that americans throw a shit-fit if anything bad is said about chevrolet. someone verbally tore my head off when i mentioned that the current gen camaro was designed in australia using our VE commodore platform which is a fact, and the fact ls9 was an australian custom motor
Chris Walton is porsche fanatic so you know that's why they didn't spend the 1250.00 dollars for a new set of tires for the 2002 corvette z06 are tell tire rack to loan them a set that is really crazy taking a sports car on a track with bald are bad tires.
I would like to see what the '02 Z06 would do with the tires that are on the prototype Z06. And if you hate Corvettes of any kind then you shouldn't be watching this video!
@93foxwcubes depends really if your planning on racing it or what c5 is cool but cant handle as much power as an ls2 but depends on what you like c6 looks more modern and nicer but its heavier c5 is is about 200 pounds lighter but has the potential too be quick depending on what your planning on doing
The Atom has no airbags, doors, trunk, nothing. My point is that it isn't a conventional car. And yes, Gumpert is bankrupt as of last year, so now you know. If you want to actually buy something with doors, airbags, a roof, windshield... Vette and GTR are the two fastest. Everything else costs 200k+ to achieve the same results. Also, Vette's cost 300k because you need to convert them to RHD in Australia. That's a law in Australia. Its cheaper in other countries as an import.
It would be both arrogant and incorrect to say that American cars just showed up and had record setting runs for any class of automobile. Nurburgring is much more than a tourist attraction or a benchmark track..........it is very useful tool for adjustment and testing of various suspension / tire set ups and ......marketing. It is one of the most difficult tracks in the world to drive fast (this from several drivers I spoke to that tested Mitsubishi products there) It is engineers at play.
@MrCodPiece They drive the car beforehand on the Hockenheimring and on public roads. Time for a car magazine on the Nordschleife is limited. The driver has years of Nordschleife experience so the he can get a good feel for the car in the first lap and push the car to its limits on the next. It makes time representative and comparable unlike the times by manufacturers.
The CTS-V was the FIRST sedan to beat the 8 minute mark, and that is fact. Perhaps MB/BMW/Audi can't beat this time? Perhaps MB/BMW/Audi don't feel like spending the money to do lap testing, because they know they won't be able to charge an extra fee simply because of a 'Ring lap. MB/BMW/Audi are extremely well known to over charge for their products, and are only concerned with profit margins. GM cares about proving it's performance, and offering a fair price for it.
@TheBulldawg4life ....Yes I am not sure what the American myth and Nurburgring hating things are..........I lived in Germany and I can assure you the Nurburgring is an important place of pride for all car loving Germans. It is a benchmarking track no matter what the uniformed spew.
Actually, they are classified as MOTORCYCLES in the USA because they don't have safety equipment like normal cars. Radicals are also a bitch to register just like the Ariel Atom. Gumpert went bankrupt recently, so basically the Vette is the best deal around, and the only one that's a real car and on sale today.
So in conclusion the newest, fastest and more technologically advanced corvette beats the older, more primative less expensive corvettes, WOW would've never guessed -__-
@MrCodPiece Sure he would be faster if had more time to drive the car on the Nordschleife but the times still are pretty fast. But they just dont have that time. Btw. i love Corvettes and especially the ZR1. A friend took me for a spin in his 09' C6 had the time of my life.
Im not sure bout this guy. I think the 02 ZO6 had much more potential than what they showed here. It seems like the intentional didnt put the right tires on it so it wouldnt perform like it should. I love all these Vettes. But I also think the numbers are off. Better driver perhaps?
Ya. So the ZR1 and the GT and the Viper srt 10 ACR are considered world class supercars. The CTS-V, and the Boss 302 are considered world class sports cars.
The 2002 ZO6 GM claims 3.9 0-60 mph and 12.4 quarter mile. Magazine testers could only get 4.0 secs and 12.2 in the quarter mile. Amateur race car drivers got the quarter mile in 11.7 sec's. Elevation must be pretty high where these guys are testing, or maybe they just don't know how to drive. But regardless edmunds sucks anyway.
Believe what ever you wish........I was present and watched them,............have you been there ? Whether they announce the results of their run is their business, not mine. If you were a company that sold supercars in the 200 to 300k range and cars priced near 100k had faster times...........would you be forthcoming with circuit times ? Nein.
@NakedSnakeBlGBOSS You do realize that there are 9 cars that have a faster lap time than the ZR1 don't you? Ferrari Enzo, Maserati MC12, ACR Viper, and the Gumpert apollo (7:11.5) I'm not sure if the rest are street legal, so I won't list them. But yeah :P
i'm just fucking tired about all this comments about the ring and wich car looks better or go faster, all cars are awesome in their different ways: American cars: good looking, incredible power and very fun to drive. British cars: elegant, luxurious and also sporty. German cars: sophisticated, powerful and race oriented. Japanese cars: very technological, and propper design. So stop blaming cars, if you don't like them don't watch their videos, simple right? (sorry for this long comment)
@fesch03 Call me a skeptic but I still have alot of trouble believing that's enough. Even experienced racers need time to get adjusted to new race cars, even when running circuit schedules that haven't changed much.
I could've bought a Turbo Elise if I wanted one, and the dealer actually had a few Lotus sitting around. I didn't want anything to do with those pieces of crap though. I could've gone out and gotten a C5 Z06 if I wanted one of those too. You're comparing the smallest category of a manufacturer owned by a parent group to the entire sales of a manufacturer privately owned? Seems legit dude...lol. How bout the numbers at Nurburgring? A Cobalt SS would stomp that Elise
@Janusha They aren't claiming any records with the ZL1. They're just proving that a $55k car built by GM can win running hot laps at a track that impresses anyone with a brain. Ferrari's run were the Enzo, 458 Italia, 430 Scuderia, 599 GTB to name a few. Lamborghinis LP 570, LP 670, All the older ones after Diablo. Masserati, Pagani, Radical, McLaren, Porsche, Lexus, BMW, everyone. Get over it.
@ivantnt26 Under that line of thinking, there are no "muscle cars" any more. The Corvette, Viper, Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger can all handle at a high level. Plus, the old "muscle cars" could handle as well. If properly maintained they still can. In most cases, all one needs to do is nothing more than swap rubber bushings for urethane and use modern tires.
@MrBriggsie , You might want to throw in the fact that every sports car in the world is compaired to the corvette, American cars Junk? Cheeck out the maintance schedules and the price of them compaired to the vette , I'm a happy zo6 owner since 2002 ...........
Except apart from the Viper the others are very expensive racing cars that are not practical for everyday driving as well as the track the viper and ZR1 are!
@Janusha .............Winning races and low times at Nurburgring speak for themselves. That is with a 100k retail car. Cadillac CTS V.....Fisker Karma. Chevy Volt's technology also would qualify but it is a mainstream sedan with generic styling. GM's Magnetic shock technology is licensed out to Mercedes and Ferrari.........and is the quickest reacting & best handling suspension system in the world (by many times)........you may have old information on current American technology.
I know this video is old but even with shit tires, the Ole C5 did just about as good as the grand sport impressive for the price difference now days. All that saved money could be put in mods.
But then again if you don't care about racing and want a weekend cruiser, then def would go with the grand sport for ride and interior comfort. To each their own
Yep still rocking the C5Z and still showing those 5.0s and 392s the old school tail lights. And includes the unique nostalgic look since there's barely any of them on the road anymore so people don't even know what it is since most of the C5s on the road are the hatchbacks.
Wow guys. Come on put some new tires on the C5 Z06. Could of been a great video.
It’s amazing even though the c5 z06 had shot tires it made those numbers. With good tires I bet it would have gone faster than the grand sport. The c5 it’s stupid light.
It's heavier than the c6

Holding back the C5 - WTF!

i'm a Ford guy, but it's impossible for me NOT to like a Corvette!! These cars ROCK!!
C5 had tires that were shot, how can you even compare it when you admitted the tires were shot.
4.2 to 60 in the 2011 z06? You need to get a driver mod!
New Z06, ZR1, 911 Turbo, 911 GT2. This is the comparison test that needs to be!
I don't see why an American would care. Holden is a GM company.

well those new supercar f1 G.2 tires and magnetic ride control will be available on the 2011 corvette grand sport as well.
The new Carbon Z06 sounds far better than the previous one. It sounds almost as good as the ZR1.

@Carfreak1177 They don't have it here because it's a bit old news. The Carbon and Grand Sport are brand new. (I don't understand the '02 Z06)
@Nick1944 If I'm not mistaken there were some folks in a '02 Z06 that went high 11's.Bone stock that is.
i just thought of a really good comparison that some car mag should do
corvette zr1 vs viper acr 1.33 edition
@Janusha You're right...it's insane to think that American cars only NOW showed up to the 'Ring.
sometimes I wisher I were a "vette guy" ... they are pretty cool and definitely good performers
@Janusha ............OK. I lived there and you read it. Perhaps things there have changed since 2005 (when I was there last). the z06 with the z07 package is probably the best corvette if your thinking about messing with the engine
to be perfectly honest i have nothing against any car, i'll happily drive anything with 4 wheels, and the occasional 3. i just love seeing excuses people give when i decide to bait them, and the fact to fanboy ratio. i found that americans throw a shit-fit if anything bad is said about chevrolet. someone verbally tore my head off when i mentioned that the current gen camaro was designed in australia using our VE commodore platform which is a fact, and the fact ls9 was an australian custom motor
i love to see that C5Z got own!
12 years later you’re still an idiot

Ya shoulda thought about the tires before taking the '02 out. I'd like to see the numbers with new tires.
@desertfox1792 thats the whole point makes it easier to drive it was built to corner!
its because they shifted early.
the c6 z06 does 0-60 in first gear, but they tried to do it in second.
A C5Z would do 0-60 in 3.9 on good tires.
Just realized i replied to Mia1shotter... I meant to post as a comment. I totally agree with you.
@drjustinjohnson the sound of a car is like half of what makes it awesome
I would like to see what the '02 Z06 would do with the tires that are on the prototype Z06. And if you hate Corvettes of any kind then you shouldn't be watching this video!

It is one of the most difficult tracks in the world to drive fast (this from several drivers I spoke to that tested Mitsubishi products there)
It is engineers at play.
0-60 numbers will always be subjective and vary more times than not especially with different drivers but these numbers seemed especially off
ive heard the gumpert is surprisingly tame if driven on road
@MrCodPiece
They drive the car beforehand on the Hockenheimring and on public roads. Time for a car magazine on the Nordschleife is limited. @rocketballa4life Plenty of parts in Corvettes haven't changed over time which is why for example ZR1 costs 100k and not 200k.
I LOVE THIS CAR! ! ! ! !
Actually, they are classified as MOTORCYCLES in the USA because they don't have safety equipment like normal cars. Radicals are also a bitch to register just like the Ariel Atom. This video idea had the makings of being one of the greatest video comparisons ever had it not of been for bald tires. Really?
does production vehicle mean something different in america? because where i come from it means a car built by a factory
stock tires suck on the c5z. Good tires that car is solid.
Did he say the Z06 Carbon has magnetic ride control?
So in conclusion the newest, fastest and more technologically advanced corvette beats the older, more primative less expensive corvettes, WOW would've never guessed -__-
@xioxio38 the new ones arent muscle cars, but more like slow super cars or very fast sports cars
@revolutionday1 yea i like them better on the old models but its a grandsport thing. I think it would look better if they were black not white.
couldnt do a zr1 also?
Click SHOW COMMENT, for a long ass conversation. LMAO
@youlance29 Look back at the comments, and look around on youtube.
i'm surprised why they both aren't still going
Tire rack advertised tires before I watched this video.
@MrCodPiece
Sure he would be faster if had more time to drive the car on the Nordschleife but the times still are pretty fast. But they just dont have that time. Btw. i love Corvettes and especially the ZR1. A friend took me for a spin in his 09' C6 had the time of my life.

whats the horsepower in ZO6 Carbon ?
@yankeesluva hes talking about the sound of the exhuast
Call the cops because the C5 was robbed in this video.
i think they didnt change the tires on purpose as to not put the Grand Sport to shame. Z06 is the shit.
I fucking love Z06s
Ya. So the ZR1 and the GT and the Viper srt 10 ACR are considered world class supercars. The CTS-V, and the Boss 302 are considered world class sports cars.
He says he has pictures, if we are lucky even some video.......
I will be looking out for the "US Cars suck on the Nurburgring" post.
The 2002 ZO6 GM claims 3.9 0-60 mph and 12.4 quarter mile. Magazine testers could only get 4.0 secs and 12.2 in the quarter mile. Amateur race car drivers got the quarter mile in 11.7 sec's. German cars: sophisticated, powerful and race oriented.
Japanese cars: very technological, and propper design.
So stop blaming cars, if you don't like them don't watch their videos, simple right?
(sorry for this long comment)
@fesch03
Call me a skeptic but I still have alot of trouble believing that's enough.
Can’t believe the c5 zo6 is virtually just as fast
Why even have the c5 there if the tires are no good?
@ivantnt26 Under that line of thinking, there are no "muscle cars" any more. The Corvette, Viper, Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger can all handle at a high level. Plus, the old "muscle cars" could handle as well. If properly maintained they still can. In most cases, all one needs to do is nothing more than swap rubber bushings for urethane and use modern tires.
them's the records
@Schalk3 they could have used the damn launch control
Someone can't do 0-60's...
ZR1 guys come on!
I know this video is old but even with shit tires, the Ole C5 did just about as good as the grand sport impressive for the price difference now days. All that saved money could be put in mods.
But then again if you don't care about racing and want a weekend cruiser, then def would go with the grand sport for ride and interior comfort. To each their own
Or go for the GS if you want the removable roof. But if you just want a weekend cruiser, the base Vette of either generation would be plenty.
wat about the zr1??????????????
