  • The Resurgence of Physical Music: CD Sales Rise for the First Time in 20 Years
2023 marked a significant year for the physical music industry, witnessing a notable increase in CD sales for the first time in two decades. This resurgence, part of a broader growth in physical music sales, signals a renewed interest in tangible music formats.
Key Highlights from the ERA Report:
Overall Growth in Music Sales: The UK experienced a 9.6% increase in spending on music streaming subscriptions, vinyl, CDs, downloads, and cassettes in 2023. This growth rate is nearly double that of 2022.
CD Sales Revival: CD sales saw their first increase in 20 years, contributing to the £2.22 billion total music sales in 2023, which is just shy of the record set in 2001.
Vinyl Continues to Thrive: Vinyl album sales grew by 17.8% year-on-year in 2023, reaching £177.3 million. Vinyl has consistently outsold CDs in terms of revenue since 2022.
Impact of Major Releases: The year's strong release schedule, featuring artists like Taylor Swift, Take That, and the Rolling Stones, played a significant role in boosting physical sales.
Streaming Still Dominates: Despite the growth in physical sales, streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music continued to be the primary driver of growth, with subscription revenues increasing by 9.8%.
The Significance of Physical Music's Comeback
A Nostalgic Revival or a New Trend?
Is the increase in CD sales a temporary surge driven by nostalgia, or does it indicate a more permanent shift in consumer preferences?
    The Role of Major Releases:
How significant was the impact of major album releases in driving the sales of physical formats like CDs and vinyl?
Streaming vs. Physical: A Balanced Ecosystem?
With streaming services still leading the market, can we expect a balanced ecosystem where both digital and physical formats coexist and thrive?
This resurgence in CD sales, coupled with the continued popularity of vinyl, underscores the enduring appeal of physical music formats. It highlights the diverse preferences of music consumers who value the tangible connection with their favorite artists and albums. For more in-depth analysis, visit the Music Week article.

Great news for CDs! I sold my vinyl records years ago when CDs came out and I don't want to switch back at this point or I'd be broke. 😃

I’m happy that physical media is making a comeback. It’s always nice when people visit your house and look through your CD collection and then tell you a story about their own history with that album.
It’s not the same if the conversation starts with “What have you been listening to on Apple Music/Spotify?”
I transferred all my Vinyl albums to CD yonks ago. It wasn’t practical to keep them anymore with a three up two down wife and two kids. In fact back then, I couldn’t even give them away at the time, no one wanted them. Now the records I got rid of for pennies, are now front and centre in every record shop again, only for stupid money. 😂😂

You raised a really interesting point there because I'd love to go back to the days where music was much more of a "social" thing and you shared music with friends, borrowed each others' albums, etc.
Yes, we still have the live concert experience to share with friends but just sitting in a room with a few people whilst drinking a beer with an album playing in the background that you'd all be chatting about is something that I really miss.

I love both vinyl and CDs. However vinyl has become way too expensive and when I buy new music, it’s usually CD.

Very well said. I have tried to get into vinyl, bought a turntable and some LPs, along with all the ones that came in box sets a few years back. Just couldn't get into it, but then I grew up in the height of the CD era. That said I am very happy that vinyl is doing well, as physical media is important for us music lovers to have access to. I'm thrilled to hear CDs are on the uptick, I bought about 650 titles last year, so hopefully I did my small part!

Wonderful video. You confirmed what all of us physical media fans have always suspected. CD sales never disappeared ! The mainstream media simply hated CDs and cassettes. So, they invented this myth of the death of the CD and cassettes. In fact sales of CDs are much higher than we suspect as many indie labels and bands deal with them without divulging their data to the mainstream music establishment and media.

Good news. Physical media needs to come back - we don't want to end up owning nothing, having no privacy and "being happy."
There's a reason they are trying to kill physical formats off.

My collection is evenly split between cd & vinyl, though I do lean towards cd mainly based on price. Also, the source components play a big role in the sound quality- a good hifi cd player can cost a fraction of what a decent turntable, cartridge, phono preamp, and so on goes for these days.

Absolutely delighted that you are letting us know that Phil. We still thankfully have Tower Records and HMV music stores in Dublin , and the CD is thriving along with the vinyl. In fact the CD is back at the front of the store again , which I personally am delighted about . Cheers Phil

My HMV now has a tiny CD selection, a slightly bigger vinyl collection (though I've not got into the vinyl thing - yet!) and seems to be more interested in flogging t-shirts, Anime books and movies and those "plastic dolly" things with the deformed heads (whatever they're called).

Fascinating as always Phil. One current frustration is the opportunity to actually purchase a CD from a shop. HMV stands alone in this and my local branch has drastically reduced the range of CDs in favour of vinyl, assorted toys and tatty merchandise. I seem to do 99% of my CD purchases online. No problem really as the online retailers have really upped their game with re-issues and box sets.

Phil, I can very much agree with everything you say here, I am happy to have my vinyl collection over many decades and was initially sceptical about the CD, but it has convinced me ! and instead of an expensive LP I buy 2 - 3 Cd for it, so more music choice and not to forget the great CD box sets, esp. from Cherry Red, less space also ! I bought vinyls if they had special artwork or were from a band that was important to me, best of all what happens if the vinyl also contains the CD, I remember the Black Sabbath 2015 vinyl reissues had it.

100% agree / I love both formats & of course it comes down to price point - that is why my CD collection is more than double my vinyl collection, but I love them both. I love sets like the YES album - I get the remastered vinyl & then 4 CDs of a remix & live concert - - I love that package. Keep all of them spinning Phil !!

Thanks for the update Phil. I love having a physical copy whether it's a CD, record or a book. I used to work in a book & music store & I loved the smell of new albums & books. I totally agree that you get a connection with the artist when you're holding a copy of their work. I remember when I first started buying records in the 70's I'd go home and play the album all the while I just was transfixed on the artwork or reading the liner notes whilst the album played. Used to think I was a bit weird but hey I still like doing that. I feel good like I'm connecting with the music. Thanks again for your words Phil, I feel that I get to hang out with a kindred spirit when I watch your videos. 😊

I can't see physical sales ever getting marginally close to where they were in the past given streaming's overall dominance, but there should be room for both choices (I stream a good amount but also end up buying physical copies of music I really like). Seeing physical sales move up is a good sign; I just want the options to be there for those of us who still enjoy collecting.

We really need to keep physical releases going whether it is vinyl or CD.
I am probably more a CD buyer than vinyl. I do go online to investigate a new band that i have heard a track of theirs on the radio to get a more in depth experience of their output and then have decided to buy their back catalogue on CD.

As you hnow ,hard times , had to sale all my records, that's life. I started again with C.D.s, been collecting for 24 years now. But in the end it's a tactical thing and having a collection of music that I can keep spinning at any time that I like and if you have L.P.s or C.D.s maybe both, it's about the music you and supporting the bands, artists, singers, groups who have giveing us this great gift to sping and love as we go thow this wonderful journey of sound.

Great feature. You’ve said what’s on my mind. I have noticed most CDs are affordable, more collectors/cd deluxe sets are priced often beyond my wallet. I recall one instance some years ago, when the bonus tracks were only available on the vinyl edition. Classic Rock albums nowadays going with the original album running order, minus the bonus tracks. Keep up the good work.

I’d secretly like to see SACD be a thing, but news like this is so encouraging anyway! Predominantly stream and download, but certainly would buy a lot more if CDs were more prominent on the High Street. Daughter and I (collectors both) haven’t yet caught the vinyl bug, but this could well change in 2024!

You are correct, Sir. There is a demand for both vinyl and CD. We decide what to go with depending on how much the artist or group means to us. Both are selling well whether it be one or the other, or both. I find the vinyl more personabl, but I love the CD for its convenience and as a cheaper way to preview or to check out new music. Both sound amazing, and both hold a place for music fans everywhere. Thank you.

Physical media all the way- I do tend to buy vinyl because prefer the interaction I have with the format: you put it on, you listen, you turn it over, you listen- no shuffling/playlist option- you read the lyrics and liner notes and look at the artwork/pics etc. whilst you do experience the music. ( As a kid I would most likely do the latter bit first on the bus on the way home, because of the sheer excitement of the 'event'.) I never had that relationship or connection with CD-everything: seemed so much smaller and the 'ritual' never felt as exciting- the same thing with cassette. However I would take CD 100% over this Spotify/streaming delivery method.

My music of choice is extreme metal. I buy all of that on cd. I buy used vinyl filling in gaps in the album collection from my album buying days (1970’s-1980’s hard rock and metal). I use Spotify to listen to new music and then buy what I like.

Lately I developed this theory: if the MP3 revolution of the 2000s didn't happen that got fueled with Napster and P2P softwares, the next generation of digital upgraded formats such as SACD, DVD Audio, HDCD and others that were better and surpassed the technological limitations of the compact disc red book audio format by the late 90s would ended up being adopted, and thus CDs would've ended up discontinued in the following years in favor of those enhanced formats (like cassettes in the 2000s and shellac records in the 60s), other features as well such as multi channel sound systems at home would have become the norm like stereo did by the 70s (quadrophonic in the 70s flopped because there were multiple standards that weren't compatible to each other at hardware level) and the vinyl revival wouldn't happened at all.
And if vinyl revival didn't happened, neither all those failed attempts to revive cassettes.

    • @jimmycampbell78
      @jimmycampbell78 7 місяців тому +1

I think the cost of CDs turned people toward Napster and P2P, and SACD/DVD Audio HDCD was set to become even more expensive, that's why your scenario did not happen. People became attracted to accessing and listening to music more cheaply or expecting to obtain it for free.
Slowly there has been a vinyl/CD comeback because of collectors wanting physical stuff, nostalgia and the cost of CDs dropping. But I noticed that lately the cost of vinyl records is rising again and the price of new CDs is rising again. They have to be careful they don't kill off the golden goose again. Physical media is great but...corporate greed means it can end up being hugely overpriced. I can see it heading in that direction yet again, or it being fenced off and appreciated only by an older generation who have an affinity for physical media and have the disposable income that younger generations do not. I have encountered young people happy to have music on their phone and they play it through a little speaker in their home.
      It's a fine balance.

    • @diegorivas1991
      @diegorivas1991 7 місяців тому

@@jimmycampbell78 Let's not forget when CDs came out and all the way through the 80s they could cost 2 or even 3 times the price of an album on vinyl or cassette, it's more likely that after a short format wars whatever that could've won amongs HDCD/SACD and other that were meant to retire CD would've drop in price too, the same as the players for those, just like it happened with the video format wars.
I was a teen during the MP3 frenzy of the 2000s and it was all about getting single selected songs rather than whole albums, and if it sounded good enough on 3/4 mb sized files who cared about lossless files that weight 6/7 times more, that was due to low speed internet connections and low storage capacity such as pendrives back then, that's why when the first iPod came out felt like you could spend a lifetime trying to fill it with MP3 files. Many adults got into this trend too, so the consumer market that the enhanced markets could target literally whane, that's why CDs or even DVDs haven't been discontinued despite being several decades old as formats and their technological limitations.
Back then the only physical media that I bought (and I bet that many dudes did it too) were things that I couldn't download from the internet unless it was on potato quality or weight several GB that could took weeks such as movies, video games, live albums, DVD concerts and studio albums that I really care.

It’s funny how if you speak kindly on CDs people take as putting down Vinyl.
I feel CDs are way undervalued, especially in the used market. Probably in the New market as well when you consider how expensive vinyl records have become.
