Good to see young folks like Karl keeping the passion for classic Mercedes alive! My first experience with a Mercedes was in a W116 280 S. It was in silver green (I think colour code was 881), but I don't remember what the interior was like. I hope to find an immaculate W116 280 S in the same silver green colour one day.
Thank god for part 4!! Been waiting for this!! Please make more of these videos about other Mercedes Benz models. Love these! Maybe the W114 or W123. I am a massive Mercedes Benz collector and fan of yours!!
Thank you for a well researched series. Just a comment on the bullet proof model that was offered, known as the Armourlite! Discovered this info in a British book on the series. I had the pleasure of a 1973 Signal red 350SE with white leather and Webasto electric roof. Always felt very very small driving the car as it was like a rugby field inside. I was also fascinated by the Frigidaire a/c compressor the car had, and which worked extremely well. Sadly sold the car many years ago, but have now fallen for the w123s ( have a CE and sedan) so my next question is rhetorical!! Thanks for your great channel.
When I lived in Durban I had a Blue with Tan leather 79 116 280S. The best riding car I've ever owned. Closest description I could give of it would be rather like flying a jet just above the ground, or perhaps floating along like Luke's Landspeeder in Star Wars. It was a fantastic car to do insane speeds in on the N1 between Durban and Jhb.
I own a burgundy red W116 1980 Mercedes 300SD that I got 2 years ago from a farmer in Northern California. He had it stored in his separate garage from 1985 when he parked it with only 67k miles on it. It was not running since it had been parked for so long but it had no rust or major problems basically mint condition. Got it running and now it’s been my daily driver. Feels weird being in it around Tesla’s and new cars but I love it and go everywhere in it. Only thing I don’t like about the car is the paints hard to keep up with as it gets dull without constantly polishing it.
What a great series thank you so much for giving us a lot of detailed information on the w116. I am looking to buy and old mercedes, I am torn between w116 and w123. I love the w116 and it looks like it's still affordable in South Africa but I need a daily driver at the moment, the w116 might be too much...
Great series, thanks for uploading. My father owned two of them between 1974 and 1985 and I loved those cars. Mostly you see these with the curved inner door upholstery, but we had the straight, like all of the cars in your series have. Is this something relating to export, in other words did some countries only get the straight upholstery?
Thanks for your kind comment! We've gathered that all 280 models had the straight door trim while 300 / 350 and up featured the rounder, more curved design. Our (South African assembled) models were 280S, 280SE and 350SE which all had the straight design.
Yes, that trim was usually reserved for the V8 models but all 280's (like the blue one) and South African 350's (like the red one) didn't have that curved trim.
Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. :-((((((///
While that is absolutely sad, it won't affect us in southern Africa; or other developing countries like India, etc. Quite the opposite, actually, we will probably get all the old combustion cars from Europe!
@@GalimotoMedia Oh yes I see, China tries to force all countries to finish with combustion related traffic, here in EU they paid millions to politicians and the greens for bannin combustion cars from 2030 on.
@@bogdanbosoi1483 Yes the EU is the dead of any individualism and souverantiy, but dont forget China, PRC also dictates the end of use of all combustion cars worldwide. Chinas boss Darth Xi told all politicians that they wont do any business with underdeveloped countries that still allow CO2 emitting traffic, airplanes or combustion based industry after 2030...I am sure USA and UK also will be forced by China to 100% electric traffic because today no industrialized country can afford sanctions by China.... China also decided that their people wont become older than 65 years to to stop their over aging community....what that means you can imagine. We face a new silent mass murder over there. Lets hope that wont come over too.
I've got a chance to buy a low mile 78k red w116 black interior with rotted rockers and rotted inner tubs broken hyddalic suspension and use my crash w116 300sd to donate spring suspension rockers and possabley the inner fender tubs rewelded in and have a non hydralic 6.9 ca

Indeed, thank you for your comment! 881 is Thistle Green, a stunning colour for the W116 and we hope that you will find that 280S real soon. :)

Thanks for your comment, what a beautiful colour combination for a 116!
I just gave my Dad a 450SEL as a retirement gift. Your videos definitely helped me getting to it.
Wow, what a wonderful gift! Glad we could help. 😊

Looking forward to a series on the W123
First chapter is already taking shape, it's quite a big task!
Nice!

Hi Andile, we're glad you enjoyed our series. 😊 As a daily driver we'd also recommend the W123 and will probably do a series on it later in the year!
Amazing video! Cannot wait for future videos like these, big fan of your videos!
Thank you kindly!
Great Series, Kudos for a wonderful job. Please do one on the W123.
Thanks for your kind comments, glad you enjoyed it. Yes, we will do the W123 soon!
It seems to me a series on the W126 would be a logical next step. Go on you know you want to.
Great suggestion, we'll certainly put the W126 on our list!
Very well researched information,👍👍👍👍👍👍🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Many thanks for your kind comment! 😊
Thank you for this video. I’m driving 280se ‘78 after restoration and I can shoot he video, but I’m talking on Russian)
Please try doing a presentation on the W123 range.

Me llama la atención el w116 azul y el bordó que en la ventanilla trasera fija no termine curvo el embellecedor del marco , ¿ Se entiende ?

W116 becomes a Vintage this year.
Indeed!
W123 is the 1 4 me!
We hope to make a W123 documentary soon, it's such a legend!
I own a 1972 280s with no headrest and seatbelts
