Worked on these for 8 yrs. and finally owned a late production V8 model. What a fine automobile from the dear, gone, mostly pre-electronics days. Absurdly expensive, sometimes un-diagnosable electronic issues are why I left the automotive industry.
No the 70 were the years of oil crisis and economical recession, so the car were made cheap and rusted really fast. I think the best quality of most cars was in the late 80’s and early 90’s. The 90’s there was the best compromise of quality and modern technology at cars.
Not true. If you are really into high performance cars we are at the zenith of ICE technology and all the other advances in material science, vehicle dynamics all come together.
As a young person, I never really understood what was so special about these Mercedes & BMW vehicles. Looking back today, you really have to say that series like the W116 or SLR107 show more than just engineering at the highest level, at a time when other vehicles were pure tin cans. They reflect the time of a Germany & a world in which certain values still applied. For your money you got a vehicle that was carefully designed down to the last detail and everyone looked up with full respect. This solidity, the reliable quality of the old Bonn republic is reflected in every corner of this S-class. I can remember an experience in the middle of the 90s, it was the air show of the US base, open house and at the same time the last service of a friend there. He had fulfilled his childhood dream, a 450SEL 6.9. We drove to the site in the afternoon. An old US general saw us in the car and sat next to us on the stage. He said to my friend: If I had to explain to someone in America how Germany works and how its people think - I would show your Mercedes. Nothing impressed him more than this car in the mid-1970s.
This should be mandatory viewing for every Mercedes executive today. Even if it doesn't change their ways at least they know how things were supposed to be made.
I started collecting W116 S class 15 years ago, Phenomenal cars from the 280 S, 350 SE to the 450 SE and SEL. I dont have a 6.9 thought, its a bit beyond my capabilities but I have an early C107 to make up for it :-)
I have a W116 1975 450SEL and a R107 1980 450SL. So I got to see mainly the SEL/W116 being made and a few clips of the R107 being made. It’s neat how they put together components and tested them right away. Like the transmission valve body being assembled at 9:30.

Brings back memories of my late fathers 1976 350se he loved that car having it from new, it was always me that cleaned it I would take ages doing it. God I really wish I had kept it. Even now 30years later I still miss it.
I worked as a worker at Toyota and VW in Japan as a winter job. The Benz of this time was wonderful because it was built with time and effort that cannot be done now that productivity is required ...
Beautiful combination! German car and Brazilian music! (Music: Quincas Moreira is an improvisor, composer, producer, engineer and synth builder from Brazil, educated in the US and currently living in Mexico City).
No matter how many times I’ve seen this video it always makes me smile. The cheesy music is just the icing on the cake. The W116 will always be my first MB love.
These highly trained specialized employees make these positins look simple while in reality they are exhausting repetitive jobs that are burdened with heavy auto parts and dangerous paints and other chemicals. In the time when Engineers dictated what was good for a car, not the financial manager like these days.....then Mercedes was really the best car by far in those days, not any other car manufactor could stand in there shadow, but those days are long gone.....very very nice video!!
The last of the truly gorgeous MB line. Big sedans, big grills, big hood ornament, defined lines. You knew when a Benz was coming up behind you, and you knew it was a Benz when you were behind it. Nothing compared to the power, luxury and status of owning one of these amazing machines. How sad they all look like a Corolla now. I wouldn't own one if they gave it to me. A 4-cylinder engine in a Benz just seems beneath the line. I'll be looking for a W-116 450 SEL when the time comes. It will be worth the $$ to restore it and make a statement.
There was welding robots in this video too, didn't you see them? Cars are still at the assembly line very much assembled by hand today. Many tools to help the workers are better nowadays tough.
Almost brought a tear to my eye. Where are these type Mercedes today? They were so classy looking. The raised hood emblem should have never been replaced.
Fascinating. Compared to modern production videos it seems like total madness how much is by hand and how un-precise some of the production techniques look!
What an amazing ballet of machines, humans, and technology car building is. Far fewer humans needed today. Probably only 20% of what it took when this was filmed. And gosh, I don't think I could install seats all day, probably a couple and my back would be out.
When the German car was a German car and the United States was actually USA, when the women were beautiful and the men were real men and no tattoos. When the intellectuals were not Communists and when you got exactly what you were paying for. When a Mercedes was a Mercedes.

I love so much the MERCEDES 190!❤️
Truly looks like "The Olden Day", so much labor!!
Great footage! Wonderful to see an S class with manual. Think W140 was the last series with this option for the six cilinders
Brings me to tears watching those beauties come out fresh and knowing I have one rotting away
Thank you for this people. Hard working. Changed. The world
W116 was most impressive car for me at that time. Look at clearance on body shell, never experience door shouting like that in any car ever.
Interior quality, design, and solidity of construction everywhere is unsurpassed.
Sometimes catch myself how I think they build them as replacement for tanks in case of WW III!
Man this is some good quality film for the time. Top notch, mad detail
very interesting, thank you for posting. I visited one of the factories as a child around this same timeframe.

In my country (SERBIA) say: Wife can be from anywhere, but car must be from Germany!
Serbian word is correct ! :)
My wife is from Japan and she says that both the wife and car must be from Japan.
don Dzon getting your priorities right!
don Dzon in Russia say too
Dobro
Si es cierto
This type Mercedes is one of the best models ever build by Mercedes.
