As an Australian we did the same thing 25 years ago. Since then we have had zero mass shooting events. All of our crime rates went down including gun crime, gun murder/assault and so on. The only thing that has gone up statistically is confidence in public safety and the reality of public safety. Best thing we ever did 👍🏽

@@Boobasweat I hope you're not comparing that with USA, anecdotal examples don't really compare with statistical data. USA has had over 200 mass shootings this calendar year already - heavy handed policing doesn't really compare with that. I mean whilst we're talking about heavy handed policing, take a look at police homicide rates in EVERY Western country in comparison to USA.
Also, look at the end result of all of this, USA has the HIGHEST incarceration rate in the world. Higher than El Salvador, Turkmenistan, Rwanda, Cuba etc.
You absolutely did a half assed job of whatever you were failing to try to do here.

It's not so much courage as the profiteers who have a clamp on our system, and politicians getting paid good money to side with the interests of the NRA. Most Americans want something done abt this. In 20 years, we haven't been able to make a dent. It's not courage; it's failings in a compromised republic, in which a faction has the power to override the majority of the American voters. And a fallacy in the antiquated 2nd Amendment which leaves open interpretation for those who want to see in it only what they want.

I've been saying for years that I don't pay much attention to mass shootings in America. The American public don't wish to make it a priority so why should I? There are news stories of people dying in other countries that could use the spotlight more and where the people of that country do care about the problem.

Its only a matter of time and the general public in NZ will be at the mercy of the thugs and the ineffective government will still not have the will or the means to protect them. And by the way it was announced only a few days ago that the NZ police will also start being armed soon.

Do you seriously think you can magically make every criminal follow the law and not get or make their own gun, especially on a place like America which has more guns than people? You are very naive with no real world experience and just parrot whatever you hear on the media. We don't hide and pretend evil doesn't exist, we do something to prepare against it. Event year 30,000 lives are taken from gun violence, suicide and justified shootings included, on the LOWEST end estimate, 500,000 lives are saved every year directly due to firearms. It isn't even close. You aren't in the business in public safety, so don't lie to us, you are in the business of disarming your public. As heartening as that is, it is equally saddening to know what her popularity is becoming at home, because people don't appreciate or understand the decisions she has had to make and some view her as dictatorial or a "communist". Personally I am thankful of her leadership through this time and looking at the political landscape here in NZ at the start of Covid and even now, there is no one else I would have wanted in charge guiding us through these times.

Can you imagine if Bridges or Crusher was in charge? "Open up the border! Won't someone think of the corporations?" Like Stephen said, the US would have had less than a tenth of the deaths comparatively. I know it has been really stressful on business owners, esp. Hospitality and Tourism, but anyone who is ungrateful needs to look at the global response and measure our success against other countries. No contest.

      We can hope.
Humans need to stop infighting long enough to topple our oppressors
      Mitch McConnell is Emperor Palpatine
Some of you will die, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make! - Lord Trump
@Justin Y. Trump is evil. He ignored this virus until he couldn't ignore it...the steps taken have been deliberately slow to contain this virus, as the government has made huge financial gains in allowing particularly older, retired people to die...no more pay outs each month...voting, if still valid in this country...is our only peaceful, legal recourse...voting 3rd party is the ONLY WAY to get real humans in power, rather than dynasty families and career politicians. When we realize the 2 parties we are divided over LOVE the division among us...then and only then may America be great again...
@Justin Y. Lack of knowledge of the deep state? I just accused our government of mass murder...I understand deep state...fact that you refuse to listen, only attack, says too much about you...clearly you haven't known hardship. Clearly none of this has impacted you negatively...you are part of the problem, offering zero solutions.
@Justin Y. Calling me stupid really helps your case...Trump has very limited brain power, as evidenced by his rambling, generally repetitive, toddler talks...although most of us are sorely undereducated, Trump really amazes me every time i listen to his banter. Trump did not close the borders in time, many flights to the USA brought sick folk here. Action wasn't taken until very late February, and by then 15 confirmed cases were more than enough to basically allow what amounts to airborn, quickly lethal AIDS《why this? (Because this virus mutates too fast to create an effective vaccine, which may never get made), upon the world. This is dangerous because common behaviors of common folk, such as shoulder to shoulder events, shopping and sardine packed working conditions, helped this virus along...even as people died in China daily...America went forward 2 full months wothout any concerns...then...rather than force the hands of state officials, and put the population through a 2 month quarantine, we've been seeing states react, rather than prepare...and all at the natural stages this virus thrives on...complacency among enough of us to allow the spread to continue. You refusing to see this logic isn't a blight on my mental capacity, just proves you are as simple as our Lord Trump...and likely among those very few, who like many elites, don't even understand the plight of the masses, whom I speak for, in this contrived crisis...Trump is calm about the virus because he exists outside the bounds of common folk...Trump and other powerful people would never have to take the risk of infection seriously as they are all well protected by expendable servants or can at the least afford to continue living lavishly and distanced from peons such as myself. 9/11 was an inside job and this proves what I've feared since then...that the government can perform mass murder and the people will always just accept it, hire the next sociopath in line, whichever of the 2 evil divisionary parties they aspire to dwell in...
Our educational system is archaic. We could be educating everyone from home...there are no valid excuses for our current broken schooling, and no teachers need lose jobs...as the internet is an amazing communication device...
Taxes are broken. Your dollar earned gets hit so many times...and we all just accept that blindly.
Medicine is broken. My grandmother died because her selfish daughter needed cable tv more than grandma needed diabetes medicine...and millions suffer from the inability to afford insulin, despite that drug initially starting out as a gift to humanity from a generous genius, privatized by evil and greed, priced beyond reality for most.
Our 2 party system is designed to keep us bickering...division keeps us docile enough to accept our own government conspiring to murder us, with our acceptance. 3rd party candidates are generally real humans...that care about other humans, even, gasp, total strangers and foreigners...
We are all on the same damn spaceship...Earth. I judge character...not race, not whatever religion folks are born into. I am old...I am tired of seeing disaster after disaster get slow attention from government, as poor people die in thousands due to delayed or nonexistent help.
It's about time the many take control, with votes, to dethrone the sociopaths that control us, play games with our very lives...
When there are only voluntary homeless, when the janitor is paid living wage, when a high school graduate can earn enough in food service, or retail, to support a modest home and essentials, while creating a nest egg...when veterans are given the same care as Congress, Senate and other positions of highest power, rather than left to suffer and die, when the lowest paying jobs are enough to survive on, then and only then, can America boast of being great...
As it stands...I feel most of us are born into lies we have no control over...It's well orchestrated, as my points are made clear in every satirical broadcast about the plight of the expendable masses, world wide...
Do I want peace, equity and kumbaya? Yeah...I do...are there sociopaths in power oppressing the common folk...yeah...there are...have good Democrats and Republicans existed? Yes...they get blocked by evil at every turn, often resigning due to unbeatable corruption. Do I pity the very people I label simple? You bet I do...I want this planet to be a better place for most...not some...for all...if ever possible...
This covid virus isn't done. It mutates too fast to pin it down with a vaccine...and we haven't seen the end of it because we, as a planet, would have to agree on a few ground rules to consider being a functional society.
That's my 2 cents...some of it...take it or leave it. Most of us just exist and watch, lazily, rather than get directly involved in change. @soaringvulture We don't seem to take note...we, the expendable masses, are being told to push through life ignoring this virus...it took ONE infection to start a Planet Wide Pandemic...and because we didn't quarantine from January 1st to February, we get to watch innocent and otherwise lives lost, daily...who are "we", in "we're in it together"? Certainly not the elite...they step on us to avoid harm...I'm furious with humanity as a whole...I'm furious we accept all this death and Trump's toddler talks...like a Ted talk without useful insight...
Those of us suffering are many...while the privileged watch the show They created...when...when will the common folk unite against tyranny, through the only peaceful means we have...vote out career politicians and dynasty families in favor of fellow human beings, with consciousness and compassion for the lowest among us.
We won't stop the cycle of abuse by trading Democrats and Republicans, two sides of the same evil, corrupt coin.
Vote 3rd party...vote for real people, with flaws, that understand what struggle is...that have put time behind any of these so called essential, yet minimum wage jobs...
This economy is screwed...always has been. The vast majority of work available is menial labor...food service, retail, janitors, grocers...a great many take their wages in government...which is far too big, complex and unsustainable...
Until any job can offer a modest secure household, until the only homeless are those who volunteer to live "free"...until the pill giants are mandated to make life saving medicine reasonably priced...we are a selfish, horrid nation, divided by the very people that oppress us, yet too busy fighting amongst ourselves to take any useful action towards a better tomorrow for the MANY, not the FEW

Why I think America is such a divided and messed up country is that you bang on about your rights and freedom, but don’t seem to understand that they come with responsibilities and obligations. Her fiance was caught in a huge drug bust and was out in solitary confinement. She paid to get him out and then gave the Mongrel Mob, NZ biggest gang that distributes meth, $3million. Let's not even talk about her pledge to build 50k houses but after 5 years in power, she has gotten 2000 made. Let's not even mention the insane housing crisis and the amount of homeless people that is increasing monthly in this country. There were people peacefully protesting for anti mandates of the vaccinations and jacinda decided to pay the media $69mill of tax payers money to cover the protesters in a bad light. Believe me when the entire country tells you that they are sick of her and want her gone. The crime rates are at an all time high, as a matter of fact, the day she did this interview there were 10 shootings in Auckland alone. In the U.K. we did the same thing following the massacre in Dunblane, Scotland in 1996, when a man walked into a primary school and shot and killed 16 five- and six-year-old children and their teacher. That horror was enough for the private ownership of handguns to be almost entirely banned and I can’t remember anyone even objecting - small children being shot like fish in a barrel was simply too appalling for the whole nation. Since then we have had ONE mass shooting (in Cumbria, England in 2010 that left 12 dead) and ZERO mass school shootings. That’s one mass shooting in 26 YEARS.
It CAN be done. No-one expects the US to ban firearms to that extent, but so many common sense measures can be taken to mitigate mass shooting atrocities, like banning semi-automatic weapons (as the U.K. did in the 1980s after a massacre in the town of Hungerford) and enforcing background checks. As Joe Biden said, “there are no deer in Kevlar vests” - that semi-automatic weapons are readily available is just madness, and that you can legally buy a semi-automatic weapon aged 18 when in some States you can’t even buy a beer until aged 21 is fucking INSANITY.

One reason that “mass stabbings”, whatever those are, don’t worry me as a Brit is that (a) it’s much harder to kill someone with a knife than a gun, and (b) it’s much easier to flee from someone with a knife than a gun. If someone pulls a knife and starts attacking people, everyone scatters and they probably injure 2-3 people before either the police or a couple of bigger guys take them down with a bar stool and a pool cue (or a narwhal tusk).

Is that too complicated for you to understand?

New Zealand hasn't rid itself of a gun problem, a mass shooting is still very much possible with illegally acquired firearms. Don't act like illegal semi-auto AR-15's don't exist in New Zealand.
You're lying to yourself if you think that Jacinda burning millions of our tax payer money in guns did anything that making the licensing process more stringent and adding a new class of license for semi-auto weapons wouldn't have done without wasting millions of dollars of materials and labour spent making those firearms.
Whether you like guns or not, they were worth money. Money that ended up coming out of all New Zealanders pockets in the end to cover for the fact that she just destroyed them to make her point, instead of doing the grown up thing and selling them to a country that could use them if she didn't want them here.
It's essentially the difference between the kid that goes and puts all his old clothes in the clothing bins or gives them to his poor friend or the hospice shop to resell, versus the kid that has a poor friend with ripped clothes and still throws his old clothes straight in the bin. Ignorant and selfish.

Say that to the insane inflation we are seeing with dairy products and produce that is GROWN in NZ and taxxed. A block of 1kg cheese can cost us up to $20nzd which is about $15usd. That's just for edam cheese. Petrol tax is at 52%. She is pledging to spend 500 million on getting people electric vehicles and is planning on increasing tax on fuel more as her "green new deal". Her fiance was caught in a huge drug bust and was put in solitary confinement. In NZ, Canada, and Australia, it's a different can of worms. You guys still live under a monarchy with an unelected queen dictator as your head of state, so you basically have no rights, only privileges granted by the government that can be taken away at any time. We overthrew all that crap and have a bill of rights, and the right to own guns is one of those rights. The reason we have gun rights is because under the Monarchy we didn't have any gun rights. The kings and queens kept everyone disarmed to prevent them from rising up and overthrowing their tyranny. Whether banning guns would stop mass shootings or not is irrelevant. We're not going to forfeit our rights and freedoms to fight crime. We have a judicial system that punishes only those people who abuse their rights and use a gun to commit murder, while the rest of us continue living with the freedom to own guns. We could stop school shootings if Biden would simply replace the glass doors on schools with metal ones, and keep them locked. We should also have an armed security guard at each school guarding the children like we have in banks guarding money. The schools need to be secured from anyone entering with any weapon to harm them. In Sweden a lunatic entered a school with a sword and attacked children. In other countries there have been knife attacks on school children, bomb attacks etc.

Not that I go around insulting Muslims, because I like Muslims, but I like to have the freedom of speech to do so if one of them pisses me off. I also want them to have the freedom of speech to curse my God if I piss them off. Why should anyone be imprisoned and punished for what they say? The puppet governments in these Monarchy satellites say the people have freedom of speech, but if they say something that the government decides is offensive, they get 2 years in prison. The reason they have these offensive speech laws is not because they are concerned about someone getting insulted and having their feelings hurt, they have these laws to imprison and silence people like Tommy Robinson that protests against the rule of the government. If they get caught with a gun in these countries, it's 10 years or more in prison. Considering how the Monarchy starved the Irish people, I'm surprised you are so supportive of their Monarchy puppet regimes. People can say what they want about our guns, but our guns are the reason we don't bow to queens or lick the boots of dictators. When the King of England sent his army to take our guns, things didn't go so well for him. His soldiers were hanging from trees when the dust settled. As for your socialized medicine, no thanks we don't want it, because we are not commie rats. Come back and talk to me in 20 years when your economy has collapsed like Venezuela, Cuba, the former USSR, N Korea etc. When you take from the rich and give their money to the poor, eventually you no longer have any rich people creating jobs, and everyone is poor. Why would anyone want to copy socialist system that has been proven to fail for the past 100 years. Insanity is trying the same thing over and over, and expecting to get different results.
