    Reminds me of what my PSG told me when he was in Iraq back in 05. They had two soldiers (support MOS, they didn’t go out on missions with the rest of them so they didn’t see any combat) stay in a watch tower. They took contact and reported that they were under fire and what they should do, since they weren’t specifically trained to take aggression. The higher ups simply radioed back, “return fire”.

      More to the story. I was @Fob Falcon 04-05. 2nd rotation from initial push. ROE shifted from kill everything to hearts and minds and you better be justified or we will fry you. Insurgents road up and down highway shooting at the towers. Finally, Base CO had mass formation stating, you feel in danger, handle your business. After that, we started f#$% them up.

      The issue is that the marines pride them selves on being the shittiest branch to be in. That’s not even a joke or taking a shot at them, they essentially take pride in the fact that their Basic Training is the most intense (to a very unnecessary degree), they see the worst combat zones when they deploy ( I imagine this is depends on the person, since I’ve meant marines who have never seen combat and have been in a “combat zone”) and overall have the most toxic people. The kind of people who never got over high school and feel like they have something to prove to everyone around them.
      Although to be fair, once you get through the trash, you’ll find some extremely effective soldiers. Like legitimately the best there are at what they do, to the point that they basically carry the good name of the marines on their back. But don’t join the Marines if you can’t handle the typical “jock” stereotype person, because while they are all over the military, they seem to sadly gather in the Marine Corps Infantry.
      Edit: I just reread my comment and realized I said “effective soldiers” and cringed. Yes, I know lol

      Ok, sure you’re right....but this isn’t WW2 and a massive scale war that would require more numbers than we have isn’t likely to happen anytime soon.
      There is less than 1% chance someone who isn’t in a combat MOS will be asked or told to pick up a weapon and told to fight...
      Hell, a lot of infantry units go on “combat” deployments but don’t see one firefight for that 9-12 months. It’s not uncommon for that to happen this day and age.
      So for all you non combat MOS folks, don’t even think about being in combat, it will do you no good. Just focus on your MOS and worry about being proficient in that. .

The Casualty rate was relatively low compared to say, 11B/19D, But high for 31B...it's all relative to how many troops are in a given MOS and what their actual Missions were. Kicking in doors , patrolling dismounted in Baghdad, getting shot at, having people you know get killed and wounded, I experienced all of it. I know CAV scouts who were at one point kicking down doors in Iraq and doing similar missions as infantry guys.
    Cav scouts and infantry both hate to say it but scouts are very similar to infantry, they just focus primarily on reconnaissance, but combat is definitely something to think about when deciding if you want to be a scout.

    An easier way to view the military is use the term "branches" in a more literal way, the army for instance. Instead of just a branch, think of it as a tree, a tree has dozens of roots that ultimately serve to bolster and feed the tree. Each root has it's own responsibility when it comes to holding up the tree and nourishing it. :)

    Hey Matt, first off love your videos as I’m about to be joining and getting all the info from you has been great! I was told though that if I started off in reserves and then in my second contract went active duty I could have some say in where I get stationed? I’m looking at the CBRN mos and didn’t know how true this was? Insight from the pro?

    • @MattWard89
      @MattWard89  4 роки тому

      So in your re-enlistment contract, you would basically pick a top few duty stations you want, however none of them are guaranteed as it's a "needs of the Army" kind of decision. I would bank on probably not getting your top pick but like 50/50 for getting top 3. Basically just don't hold all your reasons for going active at a particular duty station.

    Matt... My son and I watched a ton of your videos before he enlisted and before he shipped - the most helpful info for new soldiers on UA-cam by far. Thanks! He's a 19 D Cavalry Scout and had just arrived at his duty station before everything locked down. Question... Why do the Infantry guys hate the Scouts so much? His temporary room mate was a 11 B and couldn't stop talking crap about his MOS. I get some of the rivalry stuff, but this guy was over the top. Is this normal within the Army?

    • @MattWard89
      @MattWard89  4 роки тому +11

      It's normal but I'm sure some privates go over the top... Kinda annoys me. Also, Cav Scouts have a motto, "If you ain't Cav you ain't sh*t". So, it goes both ways. Just remind him to not let it get to him. Infantry always has a big head. It's drilled into them during training.

    • @YouReallyDontKnow
      @YouReallyDontKnow 4 роки тому +8

      Everything Matt said is true.
      I’m a CAV scout and the scouts and infantry guys take the whole rivalry thing to heart...I’m one of the few scouts who don’t care for the rivalry and name calling thing and once both sides see that in someone they eventually just leave you alone with that Bs.
      It’s not personal, it’s just guys being idiots, your boy will be just fine

      Tracked Vehicle Repairers do everything Wheeled Vehicle Mechanics do. They may be specifically trained to repair tracked vehicles, but just like any Field MOS, they may be asked to work on wheeled vehicles if there is a shortage of such. Keep that in the back of your head..you will hear that again. Hours depends on whether you are forward deployed or in some kind of facility doing Depot Level Maintenance. There are Tracks Overseas. If a Unit goes to Kuwait without Vehicles, it's because there are Pre-Deployed vehicles there.....you will work long hours getting them ready.
      BTW, I'm not a Tracked Vehicle Repaired, but everything I have written, I have seen with my own eyeballs. Good luck and I hope this helps you.

      It's not hard. I had an op4, but not 40 on my 11x contract. Fact of the matter is, poachers come to each graduation. They look for PT scores that qualify for rasp or airborne. The reality is, if you have an op 4, op 40, or both in your contract, you're actually more fucked than if you dont, because if you fail either school, your bonus is forfeit, and they just place you 11x anyway.
      if you take 11x normal, but excel at bct, you've still got the chance to go op 4/40 upon graduation. You just need to be the best. AND you're still guaranteed your sign on bonus even if you don't qualify, and/or you don't take the op4/40 positions.
      Much better to NOT have op4/40 on contract.

More than likely when you come under fire if you’re a 88M or 92F it’ll be on Convoys delivering supplies such as Food, Water, Ammo, and Fuel. You’ll do a lot of Convoy Security too. It won’t be much dismounted action like the 11B’s go through. Nevertheless, combat is combat. If you experience it, you’ll experience it.
