Always take the minimum year requirement offered for the MOS that you want. Your time is the most valuable commodity you will ever possess. If you like the military, reenlist later. If you hate it, you will be thankful that you took the minimum obligation.

Thanks, I’ll try to see what I want. I’m recently 19, don’t really know what to do with my life.

WOCS is the best of both worlds in my opinion. You don't need the degree, you get a significant pay bump, though not as much as a commissioned officer, and you get to fly.

I'm thinking of serving 4 years in the army and 4 years in the navy. if the career path I want doesn't work out, I could always just serve out my 20 years as an officer in either the army or the navy and get retirement. I don't want to serve for 5 or 6 years, because in case I don't like it that much, I don't want to be in the military longer than I have to. but if I do end up liking it, i,Il definitely re enlist.

  • @campagnollo

A two year contract is a rip-off. When you sign up for a two year, it's two years of service PLUS additional training time (BCT, AIT). They are also for MOSs that have very minimal amount of time in training, usually combat arms (11B, 13B, 13F etc). If you sign up for 3 years or more, BCT and AIT is baked in. So on a three year contract, you only serve 6 months longer than a two year and you get better benefits if you decide to leave after your first term.

@@dkroll92 : I am sure that is very possible. Back when I went in, the total service obligation was six years. The national guard here in Michigan offers at minimum a one year contract for a prior service enlistee. I joined the army as a 96R10 back in 1988. At the time my recruiter insisted that 4 years was my only option. After I was in, I met people who had signed up at a similar time to me and they got 2 or 3 year deals. I feel that it's in the recruiters' best interest to get people in for as long as possible. The Army first started doing the 6 year contracts around the mid to late 1980s, and I got a roommate who was one of those first 6 year contracts. When he was a private in basic training the drill sergeant asked how long was his enlistment contract, and he told the him 6 years. The drill sergeant told him there was no such thing as a 6 year contract, but the private insisted. So, the drill sergeant tells the private to show him his Military ID Card, and sure enough it says 6 years. Then the drill sergeant threw the private's Id card into a ditch and made the private do a bunch of push ups.

Yes, I am talking about Push-Ups; Push-Ups are notorious for tearing your Shoulder Blade Ligaments, Rotator Cuff Ligaments, and rarely: Collarbone Ligaments.
Source: My dad was a Billing Claims Clerk in a Level 1 Trauma Center, and before then he was a Medic during the Cold War.

*Excellent!* I could use more excuses to perform PULHES practice maneuvers!
Otherwise, I'd just busy myself with running laps around the external perimeter of the Base; subsequently reporting any holes in the fence which I find to the Gate Guard on duty upon returning to the gate from which I exited, as per the UCMJ rules.
      Short-term problem, Long-term solution.
The UCMJ additionally cites that damaging military property is grounds for punishment, I'd need to go read a copy of the UCMJ to find out specifically which citation, though I know full-well that rule is in there; also the US Army prides itself on the virtues of Reputation & Quality; so they might train hard, but they also don't want to do things that make them look bad; don't want to anger a General, or Congressman, without a top-quality reason.

One question: if you sign up for 4 years and you re-enlist for another 4 years would you get the same benefits as if you were to have signed up for 8 years in the beginning?

    • @MattWard89
      @MattWard89  5 років тому +34

You don't get extra benefits for re-enlisting. But as I say in the video you have a chance at a re-enlistment bonus if you re-enlist as well as having that make your first contract a little shorter too, which is good. So you don't get more "benefits" but you can possible get a lot more money.

Abbie Frankell As yamaha 1996 said, if you are active duty,"sign the shortest contract you can get" Please listen. *DO NOT* sign a long contract (5-6 years) *regardless of how much extra bonus money* they might offer you to. Not only would you have to stay in the military and Army for all that time (the military is a hard life especially for active duty, but most people in the Army have an even harder life for no reason than most people in other branches), *but if you get a MOS that sucks, you are forced to remain in the MOS for all that time until you are a year away from your contract (if you want to reenlist for more time). You CAN'T change your MOS* So please listen when you are told to sign the shortest contract possible, say 3, or even if available, 2 years.

If a place is low on manning which is 90% of the time Korea...guess where you are going. Loved Korea but I’m currently stuck at Campbell in my re enlistment windows and can’t re enlist for what I want, only can re up for Campbell. Long story short, enlist for 3-4 years at minimum so if you decide you want to re enlist, you can get what you want. Your experience will differ, but just my two cents.

The last four years of your 8-year obligation are spent in the IRR which is if they ever need you they call you back to service. For example, my contract for active duty is 2 years and 22 weeks. Advice that I was given by both my Dad and Recruiter (Dad’s been in for 25 years now.)
Take the shorter contract. I had an option for 25P at 4 years with $25,000 or 6 years with 40,000. I knew I wanted to make the military my career. So I was all set for the 6, and make that extra cash. At least one immediate family member ancestor has served. My family has participated in EVERY conflict since the Revolutionary War. Before that my family is Scottish (Clan Shaw). So fightings in my blood.
But my Dad and Recruiter both said “just because it’s in your blood doesn’t mean you’re gonna like it. Take the 4, if you like it you can re up with another bonus, different job, or some hooah hooah schools.
Best decision I ever made. Because at this point, I’m on the fence of re uping. Some days I love it and I can’t imagine doing anything else. Other days your CSP paperwork gets messed up for a second time, and you’re going on 14 months without living with your wife and you’re ready to rage.
My advice. Take the shorter one, even if it’s a little less money. You can make it up with future bonuses, and if you hate it, you don’t have to wait that extra two years.

The Coast Guard gets picked on a LOT, but they have a system I find pretty cool. I think the Navy does it as well: a "Non-Rate". That means that they get to see what other MOSs do before they choose. Which is great. But it wouldn't work in the Army, which is larger than the Navy. The Army has more MOSs as well. Probably because you are specialized unlike other Services. Except the Marines. They have Specialized MOSs to. It's better to do something you love. I am reminded of that One NCO who had FOUR MOSs during his career. He didn't like one, he tried something different. I know Grunts and Engineers who became MPs. MPs who went into Aviation, Transportation, Infantry. I knew an ADA guy who became a PAC Clerk. So get the smallest contract possible. But do whatever you think is right. This is just my opinion.

So I joined a little over a year ago and they do have 2 year Active Duty contracts and I had 6 months with basic and AIT. No bonus at 2 or 4 years so I chose the shorter one for reenlistment bonuses i.e military schools or money. You have the chance to re-enlist within 15 months of the end of your contract.

Also if you hate your base when you re-enlist you have a change to PCS somewhere else. My husband did that when he re-enlisted, we got to choose our base and he also got a bonus. I do know you can’t always get both, he almost didn’t. He’s in a medical MOS

@@mrs.nesbitt5301 2 years active duty - the training time that it takes to complete basic training and AIT is not included in the 2 year contract meaning your two years on active duty shows on your initial contract at MEPS as 2 years and “whatever number” of weeks. My contract is 2 years and 22 weeks for active duty. Keep in mind that the 22 weeks is just for my contract and that’s MOS dependent. It could be less or more for you depending on the job you choose in the Army. It could be the same if you took the same MOS as I did or an MOS with the same training length. If I make the decision to ETS (get out) I must serve two years in either the Army Reserves or National Guard. The last four years out of the 8 year obligation I must fulfill are spent in the Inactive Reserve (IRR). The IRR requires no drilling it’s just there so if they need you they can call you back in

Don’t forget you need 3 years of active duty time (training not included) to qualify for the college dollars. I have a buddy that did 6 years reserve as a Medic then became an LPN. He got out and was told when he went to apply for the funds he did not qualify as he did not have the time. My son is 19d and he got 3 years plus osut time. He gets the gi bill. His roommate is on a 2 year enlistment. No gi bill. The devil is in the details... especially for the reserves.

From my understanding is that, the longer your AIT the longer the contract. If your AIT is 10 weeks than the minimum contract will be a minimum of 2 years. If your AIT is anywhere from half a year to a year than the minimum contract will be 4-6 years. The Army will not pay to train you for a year than expected you to do a 2 years contract. My MOS is 15C which is about 35 weeks in AIT and it came with a minimum 6 year contract.
