    Fantastic videos, I will be attempting this on my own. Please upload a video of changing piston # 1 rod and rings without removing the engine AND a video of removing the rest of the engine if other pistons need to be worked on.

    I recently replaced the head gasket on my 2012 Prius after it failed the leak down test. When I started it idles rough while in gear and is misfiring. I think I am off on timing somewhere but I have had a hard time finding information on the timing marks.

    My Prius 2012 with 140,000 miles on it stopped me on the road. The car engine nolonger starts but it can move or drive on HV battery only. The scan says P3147, P0335 and P0A0F. But later the P3147 stopped showing. I have changed the crankshaft position sensor, its good but I changed it. checked the reluctor plate inside the engine and its in its position and in good shape and I changed the ECU or brainbox. The crankshaft position sensor wire harness is good. Still the car can't start.
    Before this issue I have been having rattling and knocking sound in the engine at idle or low speed only when the hybrid battery is charging. If it's not charging the rattling noise doesn't come on.
    No error codes on that.
    I cleaned egr valve, nozzles, pc valve, inlet manifold, throttle body and changed plugs still the noise didn't stop.
    I beginning to think the problem is my transaxle. The MG1 motor that starts and charges the HV battery. Remember I said my car only rattles when the car is charging the HV battery on idle or low speed. Now the car cannot start.
    I am thinking of changing the whole engine including the transaxle.
    What do you think the issue is?
    My location is Lagos Nigeria

      If it was me, Id be getting rid of/parting out the car. You are throwing good money and time after bad. You arent even remembering all the other stuff like hybrid batter, power inverter, electric motors which can also have issues and cost big $$ and time. For me, once a old Prius starts having big engine or electronic problems with the main battery, you really gotta think if its even worth it, its still a old/high mileage car, so many other things are worn or wearing out rapidly.

    Well, that went sideways. I'm not missing my 10mm socket and I wasn't short any nuts or bolts but bigger than snot that thing broke apart. Angry, big parts eating little parts noise. I took our shop boroscope and ran it down #1 cylinder (the one with the new rod) and a pie shaped section bigger than my thumb is missing from the piston. I'll take it apart this weekend to verify what happened but evil happened. I reckon I may try to do a single piston and rings or just buy a JDM motor and plug it in.

    Great video, I have a 2010 Prius that I just took the head off of tonight after it failed a leakdown test and had the typical po301 missfire and rough run on cold start. The car ran well prior to removing the head. I noticed that #1 cylinder piston is lower in the cylinder than the other three but it is very slight, it has 226k miles and ran well after cold start missfire cleared up. Do I dare reassemble with a new head gasket and just solve the coolant issue?

    • @gasketmasters
      @gasketmasters  3 роки тому +1

      DEFINITELY NOT. the higher compression with the new head gasket will cause your rod to snap within just a few days then the block is toast.

      @@amymaxwell815 Did you pull the engine and check the cylinder walls maybe honing and or replace the connecting rod? I'm planning for if I need to. Almost want to somewhat to update the pistons and rings. Then again, thinking B12 chemtool before I start to disassemble and wondering why not when I have apart since there is play and will most likely do a coolant and a cheap oil change rinse after everything is back together. .

  • @amymaxwell815
    @amymaxwell815 3 роки тому

    well, I replaced the bent rod on #1 and everything seemed to go fine. I wasn't a big fan of how the timing chain tensioner set up works having to blindly mount it against the tensioner rail. I followed Identifix's procedure on rotating the motor to engage the tension and it extended. when I started the car it made angry noise and had a missfire. I shut it right off and shucked off the valve cover. The lubriplate I put in each lifter hole was still in the head where it squished out and the timing chain has slack between the cams I can't figure what I missed?

    • @gasketmasters
      @gasketmasters  3 роки тому +1

      It will have a rattle sound for 5-10 secs then is common to have a misfire until the lifters settle

    • @charlesmaxwell1911
      @charlesmaxwell1911 3 роки тому

      @@gasketmasters I chickened out and shut it right off. I had installed the timing chain tensioner and miss read the instructions on Identifix and turned the engine clockwise to release the tensioner plunger instead of counter clockwise. Do you suggest I do anything (after I verify timing marks) to build oil pressure before starting? I had the oil pump off and lifters out. I'm going to replace the timing chain tensioner to satisfy my OCD.

      Lucky that it's piston rod #1 and not piston #2-#4! Only piston rod that's readily reachable/removable in prius 3rd gen with engine still in the car is piston #1. I don't think there is a way to replace piston rod on pistons #2-#4 with engine in the car.

    • @jafinch78

      Ah, you did replace the connecting rod. Riviera Auto does a mechanics wire method that seems like a more sure fire way to stress less.

      pistons on corolla and 3rd gen prius are same diameter but different shape. But corolla 2010 and 3rd gen prius have same piston rod, so that's interchangeable in case prius piston rod is bent and needs replacement. Removing piston head from rod is very easy as it's not pressure fit.
