I love the way you show the parts, part numbers, and price on the left of the screen. This attention to detail is what separates great mechanics videos from good mechanics videos. Very helpful.
Hello Paul. Thank you so very much for making this video. In late March, I had the water pump impeller shaft break and the timing belt jumped several teeth on my wife's 97 Toyota Rav4. I had her car put in the repair shop and was told the car had a blown head gasket and the engine would need to be replaced. I had the car towed back home and then I ran across your video. I have worked on her car for 2 1/2 months and finally finished it this weekend and it runs great! It did not have a blown head gasket! The biggest problem I had was removing the harmonic balancer bolt. I tried several impact wrenches and that bolt wouldn't budge. A friend of mine is a mobile mechanic and he brought over a diesel powered impact wrench and finally removed that bolt. I couldn't have done this work without your video. I even bought that special mountain rachet tool you had in your video and that was a lifesaver on getting to the hard to reach bolts. Thanks again for such a great and detailed video!
Z této poruchy pak vyplývá, že ani při prasknutí rozvodového řemene nedojde k destrukci motoru. Je to skutečně tak? Prosím o odpověď. Děkuji a zdravím.🤔🤩
Thank you for guiding me throughout this process. Im 5 minutes into the video and 1/4 on the way there. Took me 10 hours already so estimated 30 hours left. :)
Damn, Paul. Your videos are a cut above all others. Your attention to detail, showing each step very carefully, well lit, and according to spec is highly professional. Your knowledge in the areas of music mixing, repair to scooters and cars, computers, and others is amazing. Thank you for your videos. Thank you for the time you spend on them.
I need such motivation to replace my 99's timing belt. I hear flapping sound on cold start, but goes away when engine is already on operating temperature. Thanks Paul. You're great!
Wow idk what to even say your making this almost to easy, I mean you pretty much replaced my water pump, timing belt and my oil pump seal for me. I hope for every diy'er you dont stop what your doin, thank you for going the extra 10 miles for us.
This video is AWESOME! I am doing this job at the moment on my 1997 Rav4 and this is perfect walk through/talk through with images. All new parts that gets in with a different color (well I can't go wrong with this). The price of the parts on the side, all the torque measurement, all clean and clear. It is perfect! Thank you so much for this help.
I just bought a 99 RAV4 not running. Was told that just stopped running one day. Getting ready to tare to it down today. This video was very helpful to know what the Jo is going to consist of. I have worked on vehicles for last 20 years. However this is my first Toyota so thank you for the information. You have went into great detail on this clip. Very informative. Thank you
Thank you so much, l achieved all on my Rav in 3 days, a. bigger thank you and little kiss, for giving me the confidence to do this job with no mechanical aptitude, proving my husband wrong, he’s now hands solo for two months on loosing our loving bet👍
Tough job, had to blip the starter to get the balancer off. Definitely took longer than 7 hours by myself without air tools. Thanks for the walkthrough.
Fantastic video Paul, thanks for all the effort you put in to produce it! I had a Timing belt failure on my 98 Rav, and this video has been a real help in getting a new one fitted, cheers! Dan (Uk)
Great video. I'm half way through doing mine at the moment (water pump let go.) It's RHD so no battery tray but a brake servo ,that reduces available room, and I just moved the power steering reservoir out of the way without disconnecting.
Regarding the tensioner spring. According to the manual (10:20) it should measure 46mm. Inside to Inside, see the drawing. However you measure the outside and get 45mm. I got confused as I measured my spring according to your example and got 48mm. I concluded it was faulty and ordered a new one which measured 48mm again. Untill I found the same drawing, as you show in your video, in my Haynes manual and discovered it should be measured inside to inside. Now I have two servicable springs;-) The video was a great help though. Thanks!
Hey man I’m having trouble with my Rav I just had to do the timing belt/water pump but now I am having coolant leak from the return off of the backside of the water pump and in your video you didn’t mention what you did about those you just said it was done after attaching the front hoses @9:00 min in? I’m having the bottom of those two pipes leak :/ any help would be greatly appreciated!
It sounds like you need new O-rings on the coolant pipe that runs along the front of the engine. The good news is you can remove that pipe without taking the timing belt or water pump off. Watch my cylinder head video at 44:21 ua-cam.com/video/Ksv98JvBqXs/v-deo.htmlsi=6cNGQmd99Gc6PDQd&t=2567
Great job, Paul. It's cool to see all the different colors you choose to paint the parts. However, as you measured the spring, I noticed that on the picture, the spring measurement was indicated from the inside of the hock. Thx
Thank you Lab Coat for making this video! I watched every minute, sometimes several times, as I worked through this job. You covered every detail, and I appreciated having the torque values as well. My car runs like new!
Your videos have been really helpful. At the 9:53 mark, you use a tool to help you torque the cam gear down. Could you give some information on that tool?
I made that tool. It's just a piece of metal with 2 bolts sticking out to hold the cam gear. If you have the valve cover off, you can hold the camshaft with a 15/16" or 24mm wrench
You'll have to thread some bolts into the crank pulley, just long enough to stick out 1 inch past the pulley. They're M8x1.25. Then use a pry bar to keep the crank pulley from turning. Or, use a big oil filter strap wrench on the pulley.
Thanks for the video Paul, doing this job now. Unfortunately it is a pain to remove and install the engine mount because the mounting bolts are stuffed under the bracket for the ABS pump...
I have a question. Would you rather have the Mountain brand wrench you used. or the Tekton brand wrench you have listed in the Description?? I have no problem spending more money on a wrench if it works better. I noticed that the Mountain brand has a bit deeper Socket end. Will this interfere with the Power steering pulling when trying to tighten the bolt.
That is the same technique for replacing the 1997-2001 4 cylinder camry. Always replace the oil pump two seals. Also replace the water pump, crankshaft and camshaft seals every 200K miles.
Hi Paul, Great video! Do you have the part number for the alternator front pivot bolt? ( the 12mm that is on the right side) I cant find it anywhere.... the head of my bolt is torn so its pretty tough to fasten or take out. thanks
It's at 15:11 in the video. Dorman 917-148 is an aftermarket replacement. It's lower quality than original. If you go to the junkyard you can get the good one.
hello-can i get top part of cover off without taking motor mount off, think the guy that put the belt in got it off a cog but he will not check it so i ave to work on it myself, i am old and not to agile anymore, thanks
Great Video! What is your next project you are planning to do on your Rav4? I can't wait to see more videos. May be you do a video on how to clean the throttle body and IACV together with the EGR valve on your Rav4. Thanks.
Hey Lab Coat Paul, are those colorful splashes in your engine bay regular split wire conduit looms, heat-shrink cable sleeves, or vinyl wraps-- Where did you buy it?
Co Vás k tomu vede, že uvažujete o výměně motoru 3S-FE za 3S-GTE. Myslím si, že čím jednodušší tím spolehlivêjší a lepší. Nebo se mýlím a proč? Děkuji za odpověď. 🤩👍
The hardest part is the motor mount bolts. Second hardest is installing the belt correctly. The good news is you won't break your engine if you do it wrong. It's a non-interference engine, meaning the valves will never hit the pistons, even if the timing belt is installed wrong.
Hi! Can you help? I was driving my rav4 on the highway then all of a sudden engine cut out, engine light came on. When I stopped water was leaking out for about 2 min the stopped. Engine still turns over but doesn't start. The car didn't overheat. water was leaking by the timing belt area
Lab Coat Paul, your engine bay is a Work of Art, so clean & colorful enough to eat off! 1/ What highest temperature °F does RAV4 Exhaust Manifold's Heat Shield reach? 2/ What paint brand/type did you use on your gorgeous engine? 3/ What cleaner is safest to use to de-grime engine bay w/out blowing up electronics? Thanks kindly!!!
Thanks! Usually the exhaust manifold stays around 500 degrees fahrenheit. The heat shield will be much cooler. I used spray paint on everything, and I don't recommend it. The paint is very weak and dropping a wrench or sneezing near the car will make it fall off. For suspension components I used Rust-Oleum primer, then Rust-Oleum High Performance Enamel industrial strength paint. The primer is great, but I'm not sure what "industry" the paint is for. The pillow making industry perhaps? That paint is trash. For the engine paint I used VHT high temperature engine enamel from Autozone. It's rated for 550 F. Also trash. I had to touch paint my valve cover after dropping a wrench on it. For the exhaust I used Rust-Oleum high heat paint. It's rated for 2000 F and the can says "stops rust". The paint didn't burn off the exhaust but I did get rust spots showing through after just 2 months. For the fender wells I used Raptor 1k pro enamel. It has a picture of a truck on the can so it's tough. That paint is very thin and flakes off easily on flat surfaces, but did great on the textured surfaces by the wheels. Spray paint is cheap and easy, but not durable at all. You can get your parts powder coated, but it's expensive and can only be done to metal parts that can go in an oven. I use purple power engine degreaser. It's just strong soap, then I scrub anything I can reach with a brush, then pressure wash it. Hot water works better than cold water. Everything in the engine bay is waterproof, but be careful spraying near electrical connections. Avoid spraying directly into connectors, the alternator, and the distributor. Washing the battery won't damage it. To clean corroded battery terminals, boil a pot of hot water and dump baking soda in it. Pour the hot baking soda solution over the battery and terminals to neutralize any acid that leaked out of the battery.
When removing Spark Plug Tubes (to reseal the FIPG) what's your preferred method to clean out Spark Plug Wells (w/out debris falling into the block) & best method to remove hardened, old baked-on RTV from Spark Plug Tube threads?
Hi i have a question. I have 1996 toyota rav4. I did engine compression car engine was cold i can't start the vehicle anyway it does crank. Cylinder #1 had 135 psi. Cylinder #2 had 120 psi. Cylinder #3 had 145 and the last one had 135 psi. Do you think compression is ok ? Car does have high miles
Just got a 97 2d last week and I love it. I've been studying these videos and I've learned a lot thank you! Can you please tell me what kind of paint you're using on the engine parts?
I used VHT engine enamel from the auto parts store. It's a high temperature spray paint for engines. I don't recommend it. The paint is a bit runny and chips easily. I haven't found good spray paint in a can. POR 15 is the good paint, but I haven't tried it yet. por15.com/
I had a massive oil leak from the oil pump seal and got the timing belt (and related nearby parts) done at the same time. Has anyone else noticed a slight smell once the car is running again after the timing belt job? It sort of smells like a belt, but I’m curious if it’s just a temporary thing as all of the new parts and no longer leaking oil operate as they should be.
It's possible some oil spilled on the exhaust pipe and it's burning off now. Go to the car wash and pressure wash the engine and transmission, especially the under side. Be careful not to spray directly at wiring, the distributor, or spark plugs. Drive the car a bit, then check for leaks. New leaks will be easier to find if everything is clean.
Hello, Paul. My husband and I also own a Toyota RAV4 in 1999. We love watching your videos and we're a little jealous because you can fix your RAV4 so well. My husband would like to have our RAV4 armed, too. Unfortunately, we're too far away, Frankfurt a. M. Germany. Our Toyota has a gas engine with 19400km. How long do you think we can drive him if we treat him well? We're waiting for new videos of you and your RAV.
Just completed the job and my idle is very low almost 500rpm and wants to die out. Is it possible my timing is off and I didn’t align the crankshaft/camshaft correctly?
It's possible. Having the wrong valve timing often comes with backfiring through the intake manifold. You can check your timing belt with the upper timing cover off. Also make sure your vacuum hoses are attached properly. If the check engine light is on, read the codes and that might help you.
I degreased and pressure washed the wiring harness and removed all the old tape. Then I re-wrapped it in violet 3M super 33+ electrical tape, 1 section at a time so I wouldn't get the wires mixed up. It took 6 hours to do.
Impressive production, I will review this for specs when 4 door '99 is apart and I'm tackling the noise under the timing cover. Thank You....What's up with the parts paint....educational tool?
Thanks! I'm glad the video is useful for you. The different colored paint makes it much easier to see all the parts. I was filming most of my videos with an old gopro hero 5, and that camera can see car parts about as well as a grandma with cataracts. It was very hard to make out black parts that are near silver parts. The colors help the camera a lot. Now I'm using my iPhone 12 pro, and the video quality looks awesome.
I peeked into the lower timing belt cover and my belt has some kind gummy substance throughout, water pump has coolant stalactites, and the belt is loose with a 'water mark' line on the smooth side. My plan was to remove timing cover, and run engine to observe where noises/leaks are coming from. That motor mounting bracket has been my road block, because the upper timing cover won't come out with it attached....it is really a pain. I drained the P.Steer pump via vacuum switch & long funnel, b/c it has a leak and thought it would make space for wrenching on the upper bracket bolt.....but it is proving difficult to extract as well....soaking two motor mount bracket bolts, etc. in WD-40 over night, and I may gather a square drive socket cap so I can pull on my 1/2in drive 6 point 14mm impact socket tomorrow.
I'm in Salt Lake City. The video should have all the information you need. Unfortunately I don't have enough free time to take on more projects at the moment.
Would you recommend this autozone kit over the aisin kit? I’m pretty lost with ordering parts, but I’m confident I can do the work. I’ve been told to do the aisin kit but your advice seems reliable as well… help a guy out please.
If you plan on driving the car a long time, go for the Aisin kit. Original quality has been proven to last over 20 years. Autozone? who knows, probably not that long.
@@LabCoatPaul also, this RAV is gonna have one rust spot hole on the rear gate. If you wanna put a pickaxe through yours and show me how to fix it I wouldn’t mind at all! Haha
Hey Paul, great vid as always! I noticed you put power steering fluid in the power steering system instead of the ATF that the manual asks for? Would that be a problem or who cares? thanks!
@@brockturner3112 I've found that switching the type of fluid in an old car like this is generally a bad idea. The old seals can't handle stuff like that. I have a new power steering pump and hoses, so I just hope the rack doesn't start leaking.
@@LabCoatPaul idk, I know you know what your doing. But with our 00 ES300, 04 GX470, 98 camry, and 02 Solara switching to atf rejuvenated the ps pumps. They were whining and/or leaking, because of previous owners going to quick lube and having the systems flushed with Universal powersteering fluid. Putting atf back in the system helped all of them. However, none of our Toyotas have been as unreliable and annoying as that rav4.... So your probably right 🤗
Paul - Thank you for this video ... our '99 is loving its new Aisin water pump, thermostat, timing belt, tensioner, idler, and oil pump seal! If I may comment, this video skipped over removing the whole water pump housing, which is a lil tricky, so I ended up leaving the orig. housing in ... no biggie. I wanted to send you a donation via your patreon, but it only has monthly memberships ?? Is there a way to just send money? You saved me a ton doing it myself, and this video is WAY better than the Haynes manual I have!
I'm glad it was helpful! UA-cam has a $Thanks button just under the video where you can throw me a couple bucks one time. I replaced the water pump housing and many other things in my cylinder head video here: ua-cam.com/video/Ksv98JvBqXs/v-deo.html
I probably will do some bolt on accessories soon. Not sure if I want the bull bar or not. The first generation comes stock with a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine with about 120 horsepower. The name for that engine is 3S-FE. The 3S-GTE is a popular swap because it shares the same 3S engine block, so it fits in the car just fine and mostly bolts up. The 3S-GTE is also a 2.0 liter, but it has a turbo and puts out 260 horsepower. That's much better. It's an expensive swap because you have to get the engine from Japan and the transmission needs to be replaced to handle the extra power.
I’ve always been told that if a timing belt brakes the engine is screwed. You mentioned a broken timing belt won’t bust the engine on this engine. Why is that?
The 3S-FE engine in the RAV4 is a non-interference engine. That means the intake and exhaust valves don't open far enough to be able to hit the piston. They will never reach the piston, even if the belt is installed wrong or broken. Some engines are interference engines, and the valves can hit the pistons if something goes wrong with the belt. A lot of engines with variable valve timing are interference engines. With newer cars, manufacturers got a bit smarter and started using timing chains instead of belts with the interference engines. Chains last much longer than belts, and you don't run into a situation where you accidentally destroy your engine trying to do some maintenance.
I love the way you show the parts, part numbers, and price on the left of the screen. This attention to detail is what separates great mechanics videos from good mechanics videos. Very helpful.

Best video of all time
Big help! Following this guide on our Toyota Corona which has the same engine, 3S-FE 🫡
Anybody know the part number for the cranshaft pulley washer? I damaged mine badly and I can't find it anywhere.
thank u op, excellent reference video, great job, thanks again!
POR 15 is the good paint, but I haven't tried it yet. por15.com/
@@LabCoatPaul awesome thanks so much I'm glad I know now!
Just a mention that first gear makes the engine harder to turn than Fifth Gear that's why you don't use first gear to bump start
New leaks will be easier to find if everything is clean.
you ever thought about doing a video on upgrading the 5th gear?
I had that done on the 2001 Celica a couple years ago. $700 in north San Francisco Bay area. Just getting in there makes it too difficult for me.
We're waiting for new videos of you and your RAV.
great breakdown .
Su trabajo es exelente felicitaciones 👏 muchas gracias por compartir tus conocimientos 😊 saludos desde Argentina 👍 😉
How did you do the pink wrap on the loom? Is it just electrical tape?
I degreased and pressure washed the wiring harness and removed all the old tape. Then I re-wrapped it in violet 3M super 33+ electrical tape, 1 section at a time so I wouldn't get the wires mixed up. It took 6 hours to do.
Ahhh so good saying the sockets is L33T
So you don't have to drop oil?
Nope. The entire timing belt job can be done without changing the oil.
❤
hey man, where in utah are you at? can you help me with mine? 😢
I'm in Salt Lake City. The video should have all the information you need. Unfortunately I don't have enough free time to take on more projects at the moment.
Are those honda accord wheels?
They are 2003 Nissan Altima wheels. Good guess.
@@LabCoatPaul Thanks dude! You’re the man!
@@LabCoatPaul also, this RAV is gonna have one rust spot hole on the rear gate. If you wanna put a pickaxe through yours and show me how to fix it I wouldn’t mind at all! Haha
Thank you very much for the video👍
Please can you give me toyota vitz 1999 , gdi engine ecm pin out diagram
Simply excellent!
Can someone please tell me if the timing belt and serpentine belt is the same thing in the rav??
No. A serpentine belt is outside the timing cover and drives accessories like the alternator, power steering pump, and A/C compressor.
Hey Paul, great vid as always! I noticed you put power steering fluid in the power steering system instead of the ATF that the manual asks for? Would that be a problem or who cares? thanks!
Yes, it slowly destroys Toyota pumps.
So your probably right 🤗
@@brockturner3112 That's good advice. Yeah, I might have found the worst RAV4. I'm almost done fixing all the problems, after 26 videos.
hey Paul, can you suggest me a good OBD 1 scanner for my 98 rav4?
Every car in the United States 1996 and newer has OBD 2. It might be different in other countries. This is my favorite OBD 2 scanner: amzn.to/39yWszK
1998 RAV4 Upper Timing Cover has the opposite-- 3 x Short Bolts + 1-Long Bolt
Idky but I can not wrap my head arounf the cam gear alignments. Why skip teeth? There is something im just not understanding.
Paul please help me fix my Rva4 1994
Great vdo ,, thanks so much for sharing,, really appreciate it..
Finally! Thanks man
Would you do a video on installing a bullbar? Also, what is a 3SGTE swap, see a lot of people talking about it. Thanks for the great videos!
@@LabCoatPaul Sounds like a cool swap, but I don't got the money haha! Thanks for the reply.
Very reliable engine. Just do the recomended maintenance
Close. 2003 Nissan Altima wheels.
