This is the most beautiful show I ever saw. I’ve seen 100 shows at least, but watching the audience sob through it was something. The orchestration, gorgeous singing, all of it so unforgettable!
I saw this live. My mom took me, just me and my mom. I think we were like four rows back, and it was one of those things where she'd gotten the tickets a few days before the performance. I'll never forget looking over at my mom at one point during the performance and seeing tears roll down her cheeks. One of the best times I've ever had with her.
I JUST left TOFT at the New York Public library. Thanks to the comments in this thread I finally (after 20 years) got to see the original Broadway cast with a great video recording. Many thanks to OP and all the comments. Amazing musical!
oh wow that's so amazing you went there and saw it!! I wish we had it here in Chicago. I saw it here in 1993, most of the original cast but not Daisy. If I'm ever in NYC again I totally want to try this! thanks for sharing how you saw it, to know it's really possible!
R.I.P Rebecca Luker 🙏🏽🌷 a beautiful soul taken to soon... Also NBC should do a live television event of this!!!! Like they did with the Sound of Music and JCS
I love it too it’s one of my favourite classics I love the classic children’s stories thank you for sharing love this musical I collect media of these things and stuff
I was born in 1984. Went to my 1st Broadway show in New York, on Broadway, when I was 8 or almost 9 years old. It was Phantom. Then Secret Garden, then Les Mis, then Phantom again. Then South Pacific. I grew up listening in my big bird taped nighttime friend, from the 1980s, listening to Mozart’s magic flute, or Vivaldi’s Ring of Mystery. I love being exposed to musicals at an early age. I can’t carry a tune in a bucket, but I can appreciate them. And the Secret Garden original Broadway cast, is my absolute fing favorite original Broadway soundtrack. Ever. Mandy Patinkin, Daisy Eagan, etc. 100%. And I have a first edition book of the secret garden. And my favorite movie adaptation is a 1993 version.
So BEAUTIFUL! I think I wept through almost every song in Act 2. Daisy was so perfect...every actor was lovely. I'm a huge Hedwig fan, and I loved seeing & hearing the young John Cameron Mitchell. This is one of the most gorgeous musicals I've ever heard. Thank you for posting this gem.
Thank you for posting this! I just recently fell in love with this musical having never heard about it before then. The music is gorgeous. The story keeps true to the book and even improves on some parts of it. (In my opinion.) The cast is perfect in absolutely every way. And I never would've thought to find a taping of the original cast. This has become one of my favorite musicals of all time, it's such a shame that it is a "forgotten musical". (Though everyone who knows it seems to love it). Watching this is like a dream come true for me and I really can't thank you enough.(I actually watched this when it was first uploaded but am just now commenting).
This is a treasure. Thank you. SECRET GARDEN along with WEST SIDE STORY will always be my two favorite Broadway Musicals. The score and songs for SECRET GARDEN are truly superb. Should have won the Tony for Best Score that year. The entire cast was brilliant with stand outs Daisy Egan, Mandy Patinkin, John Cameron Mitchell and Alison Fraser was amazing as Martha. Saw her in San Jose California on tour with WICKED years ago in the role of Madame Morrible. Such a brilliant performer she is. I am lucky to have been cast as Major Holmes in and upcoming Production of THE SECRET GARDEN April - May 2020. Can't wait to start rehearsals in February of the New Year! Thanks again for posting all of your wonderful SECRET GARDEN Videos! I really love and appreciate them so very much!
I can't think of any other show that uses ghostly chorus characters as effectively as this one. I mean, many musicals have ghosts of dead characters who appear at certain moments (like Into The Woods or Spring Awakening) and some others (like Anastasia) use them somewhat similarly to The Secret Garden, but I can't think of any that achieve a melancholic, whimsical effect as poignant as this. What an amazing show!
DAMN SHAME the orginal Broadyway cast w/ Daisy Egan was never relesed on VHS or DVD! Probably one of the best musicals of all time. Tony Awarded, but no...instead we get on DVD "Sharknado" pts. 1, II. and III !!! Someone really dropped the ball on this one...
japonaliya TELL ME ABOUT IT. So much hard work got put into this show and you can definitely see it and it's so miserable how forgotten it is (there's barely a fanbase, I'm not even fucking kidding). Apparently, PBS was going to air the pro-shot version of the OBC in 1994, but they cancelled for some reason. Maybe I could get a petition going for them to do that now, but I don't know if it would be that simple or if I'd get enough people.
Well, unless someone did shoot a pro video at one of the performances, or the cast did a show just for vido like they usually do, anything now done would have to be with a completely new cast. Daisy et al deserves better!
japonaliya Oh, a pro-shot version does exist. It's currently at the New York Public Library, but you have to be studying it to check it out, I'm pretty sure (and you cannot take it home with you - you have to watch it there in privacy). If they have the means to release it and there's enough demand (my friend who's more into theatre outside of TSG told me there has to be enough people who would want it, so it can sell), I don't see why they shouldn't. I think I read somewhere that Marsha Norman wasn't satisfied with how different it was from the book and maybe that's why it's been buried in the earth and forgotten. I understand feeling insecure about one's work and it is her work, not mine, so she has the right to do whatever she wants with it, but there's a lot of beauty in the very original, very fresh way it tells the story. I like it better than the book and the 1993 film, to be honest. It really saved my life. As far as new casts, apparently, there's going to be a concert with an all-star cast in 2016, but no news on the casting yet (I keep updated though). Maybe there will be a revival too. The original cast is without a doubt the best I've seen and Daisy is my favorite Mary forever. She loved the book, so she plays her with a lot of passion and accuracy, but she also gives her character a life of her own. I've always connected with musicalverse Mary as played by Daisy Eagan better than Mary in any of the other adaptations. She's such an inspiration to me (the actress and the character).
Mary Lennox Well, I think the movie version with Kate Maberly is the best non musical version and the song, Winter Light, sung by Linda Ronstadt, was great too, but the musical beats all. I don't know what you mean about Masha not liking the pro-shot production unless it differed from the actual Broadway musical. The adaption was pretty faithful to Burnett's book, except for the lack of Mrs. Medlock, as a central character, and the extra character of Mr. Craven's brother..But hey, that is the way the play was written! Unless the pro performance was sub par, I can't see any objection to it being released. The play won Tonys and it was highly touted in the 90's, being performed numerous times (mostly non-professional) up to the present. As far as popularity goes, how can one gauge that considering it never even had a VHS release. Producing DVDs/Blurays are pretty cheap so it would not be such a risk to release it. Maybe since the 25th anniversary of the 1991 production is coming up in 2016, they will reconsider...if not they are really doing a new generation of fans the opportunity to see this masterpiece!!
japonaliya There are a lot of other changes, but I agree that it's beautifully-written and if not faithful to every little detail in the text, faithful to the spirit of it wholly. I definitely think the lack of a professional release is a contributing factor to why it's not very popular because so many people haven't had the chance to even see it. A 25th anniversary release would be fantastic! It seems unlikely, but who knows? The Garden was much the same. It's been shut up and left to wither and rot for years and years, but it ended up growing and growing until it was alive again.
WOW! Been trying to track this down for years! I have a Broadway recording but it was after the original cast and is about the same quality. Saw this when it was first on Broadway so it's great to see it again!
+Kelly Wenarsky Does your recording feature Lydia Ooghe as Mary? If so, would you be interested in trading it (online - I can't do snail mail trades, unfortunately)? I have this video, one of the replacement cast (with Lee Alison Marino as Mary), and the US tour (which I also have up on UA-cam). I understand entirely if not. Have a great day.
Just curious, does anyone know when the end of "I Heard Someone Crying" (18:30 or so) changed from this version to what's currently in the licensed version, which kind of goes into a loud crescendo after the 2nd verse and ends more abruptly?
You can actually see this production filmed professionally at the Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts. It is a later version. This has to be my favorite Broadway Show ever. Saw the last preview before opening, it was simply magical and grown men were sobbing when Mary opened that door at the end of Act I! This version is so hard to see - we miss all of the beautiful lighting, so painterly. And I loved the part when Rebecca Luker as Lily descends to Colin in the cameo frame, which is missing here. What a masterpiece. Lucy Simon, where are you?
Being a very sheltered child in Oklahoma, I don't have the means to see it. :( I didn't know about the later version. Is it one of the replacement casts? I know there is one of a workshop from 1990 at the New York Public Library and I don't know how different that is from the finalized version, but I hope not very because I want to see the original cast in the version I know and love, maybe even have it released on DVD someday. If it's just a little different like the previews/opening version is, before Marsha and Lucy made the little changes that they did to shorten it, I don't really mind, but apparently, the earlier workshops were /very/ different from the show we know (Ben sang Lily's Eyes and it was supposed to be sung about/to Colin). I don't blame them. That's such a beautiful scene and I hope I can find my garden door someday. Yeah, for lack of a better word, the quality of this recording sucks and I have sensory issues, so the washed out, distorted colors really bother me. I only sat through it and uploaded it because it's the only one available. Apparently, there's another bootleg in better quality and I almost made my mom pay $35 for it, but it's super rare and I found out that it might have not even had Mandy Patinkin in it! Rebecca Luker was perfection as Lily and so was the staging. I owe Lucy Simon (and Marsha, Heidi, Susan, and Daisy) so much.
@@marylennox841 The video at Lincoln Center is with the original Broadway cast, but it was filmed before the creatives made changes which they were incorporating into the national tour. The changes were not incorporated into the Broadway production until after Patinkin left the show, as he would have had to learn more/different material. There is a much better bootleg video of the show that was shot from the front row of the mezzanine, so there are no heads in the way. It does not feature the original cast; Luker, Ton Toner (Ben), Alison Fraser (Martha), Barbara Rosenblat (Medlock) and many ensemble members are original cast members, but Mary, Dr. Craven, Archie, Dickon, and Colin are all replacements. There is also a video of much of Act 2 of the final performance on Broadway that is very well shot. There is also a boot of the show shot from the back of the balcony which, although it has heads along the bottom, the recorder went in for some close ups. There is also a video of the national tour, though the cast for that was not very good.
Such a beautiful show, lovely score and talented cast. I have loved it for so long. I would adore for my company to do the show, but was told it was "boring." BORING! It is a dark, quiet and lovely show. It needs to be done well again.
Jennifer Wagner Different people have different opinions, but I don't understand how anyone can think of this show as boring! There's so much to take in - Mary and her backstory, the ghosts, the dynamics of the Craven family, Mary and Colin's journey to spiritual wellness, the relationships between the living and the dead (particularly Archie and Lily). It does beauty, drama, and magic better than a lot of overblown shows, in my honest opinion, especially with the way it was staged on Broadway. I hope you have the opportunity to be in it or work on it or whatever you'd like someday!
Mary Lennox I agree. It has so much substance that is missing from the more recent "spectacular" shows. I think it needs a new retelling pronto. I hope I can be in it, though I suspect I would more likely be a vocal director, at this point. :)
Mary Lennox Considering it was adapted from one of the great children's books of all time, how could one find this boring? Maybe in this day and age of CG 3D in your face action films, a simple beloved story is not enough to engage the brain dead viewers of today.
Who is the Mary Lennox in this production? I directed Melody Kaye who replaced Daisy Egan in the Sound of Music. Would love to find a dvd of her performance.
+Art R I'm pretty sure this is Daisy Egan. I think this is a preview performance--there's some material in this performance that wasn't in the final version.
Oh, definitely! I can't say whether I like this version from the previews/on the soundtrack better or the finalized version that's in the licensed book better. I like the idea of Ben having more of a solo and it seems a lot less cluttered and messy without so many people singing at the same time, but I also think Martha's parts in the finalized version are very pretty (especially sung by Alison Fraser *heart eyes*) and I like how there's more of a sense of progression of time with Mary learning the ropes (haha, get it...) of the garden grounds.

"Lily's Eyes" is one of the most phenomenal male duets of all time and Mandy P. and Robert W. absolutely knock it out of the park.
Mandy P. is also Inigo Montoya.
