It just keeps blowing me away that this tiny camera has so much potential. A cam you can take on every trip, but also use it on a 50k shoot and nobody is complaining. Insane. Good video man!
That smallrig v Mount bracket comes with an adapter you can put on your npf plate. I'm using a similar neewer unit. Works great. This video was awesome.
It’s so good to see you again. Your content inspires me to go out and film something, even this video when you’re sharing about your gear. Keep it coming!
For you battery situation you might want to get the smallrig V mount with the arca swiss quick release and mount the NPF charger to the V mount adapter that comes with it. it would work just the way you are wishing for.
Great little rig M8 I like npf power too but had considered all sorts of Heath Robinson ideas for mounting but then you nailed it with the L brkt great idea and cheap and low profile top...
highly recommend the 99wh smallrig v mount bat instead of the NP battery, gives great weight distribution with the 24-70 which tends to be front heavy. Loving your setup! have been going more minimal lately as well.
this looks really solid. When im going for an fx3 (or then fx3 mk2) as a B-cam in the future, im going with this build for sure. really minimalistic and still ergonomic and practical.
I've been "borrowing" your ideas since your BM rig days, thanks a ton, mate! I owe you one... Come shoot in Argentina, and you'll have a sidekick ready to go. 🙌
NOT using log profiles is so much easier to expose and focus - and probably saves a lot of time in the edit + no iso limitations / gotchas (speaking as a panasonic user where you get stuck with iso 640 minimum in bright daylight...) How much production value do you reckon log profiles give you over going for a look in camera? What cases would you promote for in an camera look.
Hey James go ahead and get that Smallrig plate that goes to V-mount and then you can get for a few bucks get the "Fomito V-Mount Base Station" which the "V" part can screw into your smallrig NPF base. So you get everything you are after with the now added benefit of using a V-mount battery should you ever choose to in the future.
Sick one, pretty much the same set-up here but S5IIX. I bought some neoprene padding for the back of my v-locks for the chest contact. On occasion I've also hooked a peak design strap round the set-up for a point of contact round the neck (or chin if you'd prefer ha). How come you're commiting to the NPF's and not bolting on a mini-v James?
Interesting an nice minimalistic rig. You show it on a gimbal but would it actually work on a normal gimbal (like RS or so) with the battery sticking out to the rear so much?
Dang. I used to watch your videos religiously years ago, especially re:b roll. I have been subbed but nothing came up past few years. Then this morning back in my feed with this beast build that i have been looking at finding similar setup with my fx3. Love the battery idea. Ive been struggling trying vmount route with sr99. Just too heavy, though works nice on tripod. I had a portkeys, still do, but the connection always seemeed fiddly with fx3. So went to atomos to also get onboard recording.... Which i nearly never use... Yet. Anyway thats one sexy setup i have to steal the battery idea because was looking for exact same ideal of putting on gimbal, but also pulling off for handheld. I do have a vintage lens addiction so also use the dji lidar system to get AF on them. But also use that lens as well, first one i got with fx3. Thanks for inspiration for rerigging mine some to tweak it to get what i need from it. Glad you showed back up because ive been searching for your channel and could only remember your first name.
Using a pretty similar setup just with the smallrig cage and v mount & an atomos ninja v, although it’s tempting to change to the portkeysbone as I hardly ever need to shoot raw and the camera control looks great
Nice mate, yeah the Porkeys is a dream to be fair. Mad bright and the controls are such a nice add just for confidence really. It gets bloody hot tho 😆 Thankfully its got fan control
Lol James I do the chin support move as well hahaha this had made me feel less weird about it! Been looking to put together a handheld rig for my A7S III and didn't know about a lot of these components so nice one for the recommendations!
Hate the top handle, the XLR's are great, but I only use it for interviews etc. Most of the things I'm shooting these days are without onboard audio then a separate interview
this looks beautiful - just the kind of thing i am looking for. thanks for the inspiration!! - bruuhhh multiple of the items you listed as being the ones on your rig there in the this video ARENT even the same item... got a handle thats similar but definately not the same one from your link. tf?
Its a definitely a lot brighter, would have to compare colours though as I'm unsure. There must be a comparison video on youtube somewhere I would have thought. I love the colours on the Portkeys, I run my LUT Through it for exposure.
No mate, If I'm going to shoot audio via a shotgun, I'll remove the top handle and Nato and add the XLR Handle. I'm rarely Running audio in camera if I'm not shooting Interviews.
Don't always need audio. But I use the DJI mic 2 for lav if needed, or the Sony top handle with M/S mic into XLR. So either onboard wired or wireless, or can actually run those 2 at same time into 4 channels and get it all. Or could also simply pop a cold shoe to side with shotgun into mic jack. So many options to quickly add onto something like this.
The ultimate compact rig! ... the chin contact is sleeper! Also just got this cage for the FX and why oh why of whyyyyyy did I not use Nato rails before. Rig, to gimbal in seconds!! Sweet video dude, always a sucker for Rig videos. I tried these Lexar cards in the FX (well the old ones) and they wouldn't record XAVC-S 50fps :( kept skipping and failing on some files so had to get the Sony ones :(
Thanks dude! Yeah I love the way the Rig is so compact. Mate Nato Rails are a must. Oh dang, sorry to hear you had that experience. I've been using the New Silver Plus Cards and they're working great on 4k60 XAVC-S. Even the Standard Silver is working great on it. Lets hang soon mate 🙌🏻
@@Jamesmatthews Lo vi, jajajajajaja por eso puse que mejor usen su celular, mas si tienen un sony o que tenga pantalla OLED, tienen lo mejor de lo mejor en las manos todos los dias.
It's always nice when it fits on a gimbal when you are done.
for real, right?! that doesn't happen often xD
It just keeps blowing me away that this tiny camera has so much potential. A cam you can take on every trip, but also use it on a 50k shoot and nobody is complaining. Insane. Good video man!
The best rig i've seen so far.
That smallrig v Mount bracket comes with an adapter you can put on your npf plate. I'm using a similar neewer unit. Works great. This video was awesome.
Would love to see a video on exposing and grading S-Log 3 and what you've learned on how to improve it
It’s definitely coming 👌🏻
That bit about exposing and grading slog sounded interesting, can you do a next Video about it?
Absolutely. Want to do a big in depth video on it.
@@Jamesmatthews amazing definitely going to watch and Like 🤗
James is so helpful and humble!!!
Glad this was helpful mate! The humility is questionable 🤣
That's a dope rig mate. If you add a tilta wrist strap on the right side, it starts to feel like an fx6
Or Smallrig
It’s so good to see you again. Your content inspires me to go out and film something, even this video when you’re sharing about your gear. Keep it coming!
So glad to hear it mate. Thanks boss 🫡
Right, Matthew’s meat! Always much of substance from you mate! Thanks, and cheers from the States! 🫡🇬🇧

Thanks for this mate - I just went on Amazon to get a bunch of this gear, good timing with Prime Day!

Finally a rig that suits me 🤩
Is the cage essential ? It looks like I can fix the L bracket on my nude FX3, isn't it ?

Can't swap to a smaller NPF then for gimbal shots. A lot of v mount batteries are much bigger than the battery he used in the vid.
Thanks Evan, I can actuallys screw the NPF Plate onto the Smallrig mount. Its just a bit bigger than it needs to be for me sadly.

Cool rig! How do you record and sync audio?
Im looking to upgrade and not sure where to pivot. What would you prefer. The s5iix , the fx3 , a7iv , s1h ?
nice video about your setup! $o, one last thing..the overall Ka-Ching?
Realistically, probably around $700 with the monitor

Weirdo's us 😆 Yeah I actually tested out this rig with the A7siii (Just without the cage as I dont have one for it yet), works great
When is FX3 ii coming out
Great video, which HDMI cable are you using? Cheers
Thanks mate, this is the one I'm using: amzn.to/3zPKr8y
What happens if the battery disconnected mid clip. I would think V mount is a more secure connection agains your chest? I do like this idea otherwise
What's your set up with audio ? Do you not recommend the FX3 XLR handle ?
Hate the top handle, the XLR's are great, but I only use it for interviews etc. Most of the things I'm shooting these days are without onboard audio then a separate interview
What’s your personal approach to properly exposing for S-Log 3?
Going to make a full video on it 👌🏻
Hey James, what is that very slim and neat right angled hdmi cable you have into the side of you FX3?
Its the Alvin Cables HDMI, this one to be exact: amzn.to/3YnW9lp
