- Reverb is one of the most used audio effects for mixing. This highly informative tutorial by Dan Worrall teaches you the basic principles of reverb and shows you how to apply it effectively in your mixes.

Other companies: _"Here's a knob, here's another one. Oh look, there's a fader. Sweet! Doesn't this preset sound great?! Our plug-ins are really the best! You should give us more money."_
FabFilter and Dan Worral: _"Sound is really tricky, and making a recording sound natural even more. Here's how audio professionals deal with this problem. By the way, we're going to use our products to illustrate this."_
I'm just blown away how informative these tutorials are. Makes me feel good about every penny I spent on FabFilter plug-ins.
I don't care how much of a professional you think you are, Dan will always share something you never knew.
Talkin Music Production Agreed - I always learn something new with Dan and FabFilter videos and tutorials.
You know what a sycophant is "Talkin Music Production" ?! Here is a straw...
Yeah he's the audio god for sure
"And on the 1st day of the second week, Dan made the most fire, banger of a beat, and he saw that it was good, and so it was"
if this is the beginners guide, i cant wait for advanced
Please please make the advanced 😊
Holy shit
Right?!
Learned more here than with most other beginners guides. With the advanced guide I'll become a pro hahah
Probably costs money
I’m shocked at the quality of your videos. Usually when I look at UA-cam tutorials is usually people talking about topics they have rudimentary understanding of just for views, to build a platform or not really wanting to give away too much information. You my friend are a true teacher of the arts. That reverb automation is just crazy never thought of that. Simple yet extremely effective. Your explanation of things are so clear and precise. I don’t normally write comments but I had to for this.
Their tutorial are very inspirational. Brief and clear! I try to do that same way in my channel, because I hate the way your wrote ("people talking about topics they have rudimentary understanding of just for view"). But for small Czech market :-)
I totally agree. Brilliant stuff. And nary a talking head in sight. Praise the Lord (or deity of your choice) for the lack of badly-lit idiots in back-to-front hats who blah. With jump cuts. Oy vey! Or similar. Many thanks.
Dan's voice makes my knob bright and glossy
I'd never thought about what phenomenon pre-delay was simulating... Love these vids.
Love Dan's tutorials. They are awesome.
If I'm ever gonna learn about Quantum Physics, It better be from a video narrated by Dan Worrall! :)
Pro-R is my absolute favorite reverb:
-amazing sound!!!!!
-adjustable in REALTIME without annoying zipper artifacts!!
-Decay rate EQ...
-precision when needed, incredible lushness when turning that 'character' knob.
in a nutshell: it is pure brilliance from the plugin GODS of Fabfilter!!!
I LOVE FABFILTER PLUGINS!!!
I LOVE DAN WORRAL's TUTORIALS!!!
I agree with all of this.
14 mins of PURE GOLD. Kneel before professor Worrall, dude, seriously.
Thanks Renegade Brass and Gina for the sick tune. And thanks Dan, as always.
so amazing how Dan just casually explains concepts in a way I have never seen them explained before and they just make so much more sense in a realistic scenario. The predelay was the best example for that IMO. I always thought of it as a "don't wash up the initial transience" kinda tool which is what it does but doesn't really describe what that actually means but seeing the logic behind it with a big room but still close up sound source makes the concept so much clearer and more logical.
I didn’t realise Dan so many of the fabfilter videos…..looks like I got a new box set to get through
Blown away by this.. somehow through explaining the concepts of reverb, you also get introduced to the actual plugin's functionality. I wish all plugin "tutorials" were like this. This is the gold standard. A+
I am currently putting myself through “Danh World University”. 😀
I’m starting at the top and going through each and everyone of his videos, taking notes, practicing, improving !!!!!
Thanks Dan, (or as we like to call you “master sensei”).
I am still surprised by some things I already know. I think the fact that it can be explained so easily and how going over old knowledge keeps you aware of it is what makes Dan and his videos so god damn good.
Fab filter tutorials always step well beyond the "turn this for more/less". Dan IS the man.
the amount of extra knowledge you get from this series is insane.
if you truly appreciate mixing and mastering, you need a treated room with high quality studio monitoring speakers, and lots lots of free time. Something I never had unfortunately.
This is the best presentation of these kinds of mixing techniques I've ever seen on the internet.
The voice, the documentary-style cadence, the immediate visual and auditory examples. Powerful!
A little caveat to reverb making things sound like they're "towards the back":
What really makes sound sources appear closer or further away is the amount of *timbral detail* in their signal. Reverb can accomplish this, but only when its signal (with lessened timbral detail) begins to overshadow the direct source (with more timbral detail).
To make things sound further away, I usually will usually use a subtractive parametric EQ to cut frequencies that contain timbral detail detail. Typically high-mid frequencies between 2-5kHz
There is complex of things that makes sound more distant - eq, dynamic range and transients, width of source and width of early reflections/reverb tail, and very important is contrast with other elements of the mix.
Finally somebody clearly explained Reverb
Wow, what a brilliant tutorial. It cleared up so many half-understandings I had. Thank you so much!!
I keep coming back to these videos every year or so, and I'm always amazed at how in depth and well done they are, as well as how much more nuance my ears pick up over the years. Anyway I always end up learning something new or gaining a new perspective.
I've been following Dan since the days of Camel Audio. If Dan can't explain it to you, you're not breathing.
I'm no where near a beginner yet I know I will learn something listening to Dan :-)
I'm about to binge watch this entire mixing and mastering playlist...I've watched a lot of tutorials about music production some better than others, but this guy knows his stuff and knows how to explain it...it's not over my head, but I'm still learning something new in every video
It feels so good to listen to a wise man! You are like a wizard with long white beard and starry blue hat. Thank You for sharing lots of great knowledge!
Mannnnn I love the way you break all your videos down... You take your time... Salute Bro
The song and the vocals are next level...her voice is very attractive
Fab filter guys - you’re absolutely amazing!!! I can’t even imagine exactly HOW you’re doing that stuff in real-time !! I feel like I just watched a super informative masterclass with tons of useful info. Everything is explained and showed not only in a cool way, but also very clearly !
Bravo guys!
this guy makes the best audio tutorials on youtube, hands down
I've learnt more here than I have with experiments! 🙌🙌
This is the most excellent tutorial I have ever watched, great job!
This video should have a million views by now. Hope more people find it...
i can only imagine how great a classic spring reverb would sound if it was made by fabfilter.
please???
Very informative, thank you very much for the tips. That's a great song! I love Gina's vocals in particular. Gives a very good example for demonstrating the reverb techniques.
Always impressed by these tutorials. Thanks so much :)
These are such wonderful and inspiring tutorials!
Thank you FabFilter - always enjoy your videos and learn a thing or two!
These video's are freaking amazing! Fabfilter are one of the best plugin creators out there. And Dan with the amazing tutorial's LOVE IT
I have just discovered this channel, i really appreciate how straight forward and uncomplicated you present your knowledge. Thank you!.
Simply awesome! Reverb is one the hardest things to get right but this tutorial really shows how it can manipulate the acoustic space of the recording and totally change the emotional response of the listener. Massive thanks to Dan and Fabfilter
reverb is the hardest? low cut and sidechain helps for me. mixing piano for mono is the hard challenge
@@tylerdurden6992 I hear you. I meant getting the reverb to sound acoustically natural and not like a "effect" is not always easy. But the video demonstrates that in a cool way.
These videos are always so well made. And convince me to buy FabFilter products aha. Never seen a better ad than these tutorials.
what strikes me in almost every video od Dan's is that all of the things he talks about makes a difference but it all still sounds great if the music is good.
So what I think I need to do as a musician is focus mainly on the music, lets say 70% of the way and try to get the arrangement and the parts all right. Then I do the best I can with mixing. Where I have a couple jobs to do which include:
1. deciding on where I want each part to be placed/perceived. Depth and width can be played with using pan, reverb and phase trickery using EQ plugins.
2. Balancing the levels for all the different sections of the piece
3. Eq the parts slightly if they seem to fight for space
4. Compression (im not sure what this is exactly gonna achieve except make everything louder) need to learn more
Then I mix all the parts down into one Track and do a master eq such that it sounds decent in the car, from the phone speaker, earbuds, what have you, and not just my monitors. Oops should have checked for Mono compatibility before i mixed it down.
And lastly slap a limiter on it and make sure the loudness is not too far away from other tracks in the same style on Spotify
Hey Dan, many thanks from out here in Radioland. We’re all trying to get things right, and your videos are a genuine help in a world of So so attempts.
Very inspirational! I always say great teachers not only explain information, but inspire creativity.
Her vocals are awesome... But the true golden voice here is DAN!!!
Wow the verse to chorus example blew my mind.
Best tutorials on whole youtube audio community so far. All the beast for FabFilter and Dan!!!
This was a super amazing tutorial, and the quality of the content is phenomenal
This whole series of videos is incredible - I've learned so much. And I love the FabFilter plugins. Thank you!
Dan’s tutorials are always super inspiring and informative! Thank you!
I love these videos. Amazing content for producers or audiophiles or anyone wanting to understand sound.
Another masterpiece from Mr. Worrall! Pro-R is the only reverb that doesn't make me feel like I'm compromising something. There's always some unpleasant tone or character to even the best, most iconic reverbs, but Pro-R gives us total control of everything you could ever want in a reverb. The only time I use anything else anymore is if I'm running something live through my Apollo and am stuck with UAD verbs. Mastering Pro-R and a good variety of saturation FX (Klanghelm's SDRR is about 12 in 1) limits the need for compression and EQ, which are usually the first two tools that most people grab first. Got to hand it to FF and Dan. Pro-DS was the best de-esser available, but now I use Airwindows DeEss, which blows it away. I put it at the top of the FX receive for any track with vocals or cymbals with FX that cause problematic sibilance. I set it to its highest setting, which you can do because it's not just a targeted MB compressor. It actually smooths out the sibilant waveforms without affecting the rest of the signal in the frequency range. Then, when I mix back in the raw track, it ads just enough of a natural sounding sibilant that doesn't linger. FabFilter, Klanghelm, and Airwindows make a beautiful team!
I feel the same thing - level and reverb (and right amount of saturation/preamp gain) is much more important than eq and compression!
Very cool with that Sends tip pertaining to helping to highlight the various vocal sections of the track. That tiled room was driving me batty but i know you kept these examples a bit Wet to get the points across. Thanks for this one!
Beautiful warm vox by the way. I loved the sound example
These videos packed with so much sauce! You hand out so much information in an entertaining way with great examples. Thanks so much for all the work on these! Some of the best tutorials I've seen on the internet in any form.
This is great with all the examples. Thank you.
The emotional dynamic range... damn well said
The narration sounds like that of a nature programme! Very nice :)
These videos are sooooo helpful! And starting to love my fabfilter plug-ins now I’m starting to get to grips with them…they just sound so good 😊 thanks for posting
Probably the best tutorials out there.
i love the snare at the end
I freaking love FabFilter so much. Hands down my favorite plugin company!
We love that rich warm, warm blue
That song is really great!
Outstanding presentation Dan!
This tutorial is SO good!! I also really appreciate the music used and how it helped express the points.... and so thankful the music was enjoyable. I turn off so many youtube tutorials becuase I can't stand the music they use, or just can't focus on if things sound "better" because I think the song sounds terrible either way haha
Would love another one of these!
These videos are amazing. Thank you so much
Another treasure from Dan
You're such a great teacher. Thanks
This just made my day.
cracking tutorial from Dan! And another banging Renegades tune
Another winner from Dan. Congrats on the recent releases for iOS btw, much appreciated by the mobile musician community.
TheVimFuego Yup, which app are you using for the iOS? I’ve checked out Auria and I’m pretty sure I’ll be getting Auria and all the FabFilter plugins for iOS in the near future! It is really amazing that we can do the same in an iOS device as in a bigger system.
@@JorgeSilvestriniI have Auria and the FF plug ins but to be honest I don't use it much and prefer the workflow of Cubasis and freeform jamming in AUM or Apematrix. It's worth the investment if you are serious about music making, I'm more a casual jammer these days due to other priorities (family, etc). It is amazing what we can do on iOS.
TheVimFuego Completely agree and understand. To me, just the fact that I could edit and mix an entire song is the selling point. All inside of the iPad and take it anywhere. Now, if Ableton decides to come to the iPadOS then I’m done and won’t need a laptop.
Wait! A DW fab filter verb video. I suspect it’s time to wake up soon! 🙌👊👍❤️🤘
amazing Beginner's Guide 🙏❤
Finally learned how to effectively use predelay! Thank you, Dan!
Dan's tutorial is the best
Dan nails it, as usual
Man, killer vid on Reverb. Thank you
as always, Dan is super professional! very well explained.
Dan is awesome. I swear to God.
You Guys make great videos, God Bless!
That song is beautiful ❤️
Amazing video. Thanks
Dan is amazing!
nice. i read about a full 3d positional raytracing system, which was applied to a FPS game. i could imagine reverb for music being done same way, where the size/shape and materials of room are fully specified in 3D space, including auditory characteristics for the materials.
Excellent tutorial as always!
Beautiful reverb!
#FabFilterRocks!
This guy is ridiculous...🤯💨 Amazing explanation and test 👏
i cant believe these videos are free
Such a great explanation!
phenomenal tutorial, thanks!
Thanks for an awesome guide!
Really learned from this one. Thanks!
It would be great another tutorial explaining how to mix with reverb; panning the send signals, stereo vs mono, EQing low end sounds, etc
Dan, I love your brain, and your channel.. That is all
Brilliant video... Really helpfull.
I actually really liked how the dry vocals sounded on that song... couldn't quite feel the "disconnected" vibe that he described. one of the hang-ups I have in my own production ear I guess!
does anyone know the artist? i really dig the song.
