Bolens Sub-compact Tractor Review

  • In this video, I give a review of my Bolens G152 sub-compact tractor. This tractor was actually made by Iseki and sold by Bolens.
    I've found this tractor to be a very capable machine. The 3-cylinder Mitsubishi diesel engine has plenty of power. I also show it in action pulling out some small trees.

    I know this video is a few years old but I just came acrossed it and enjoyed it very much. Thanks for making it.
    I have a Bolens G154 with front end loader and backhoe. It's not the most ergonomic machine for my large frame but it is built like tank! I've used it to dig out stumps up to 10".
    I usually work alone so for small saplings up to about 3" I find it easier and much quieter to use my 60" Hi-Lift jack.
    About 6 years ago we bought a 200yo house that was all overgrown with english ivy and forsythia. The little backhoe on the Bolens made quick work of it.
    I also used it for regarding around my house. The previous owner used it for cutting a small tractor path into solid stone on the side of a hill. He was pretty hard on it but it took the punishment.
    No it lives an easy life in my garage. I only use it when I can't reasonably do certain jobs by hand, which I prefer.
    One nice thing about not having electronics is that tractor can sit for a couple months without a battery tender and still fire right up.
    I'm hoping to someday restore it but with the old house needing my attention I will probably never take the time. So for now "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
    Do you still have the tractor??
    Thanks again.

      Going to use it this week moving mulch and a pile of soil.
      It is so handy. I never thought I would use it
      as much as I do. The small size is perfect for maneuvering through trees and gates. It fits in my relatively shallow garage witch is really an old equipment shed. Anything larger with a back hoe would be too long.

    I have a G154 ,with a 2 cyl Mitsubishi. Have a boom, tiller, blower and front blade. I installed my own boom and it runs of the 3 pt hitch hydraulics. Works well, but would like a little more power to run the blower. Only has 14hp at the pto. Good little worker

    The only ( so called Bolens) that had 4 wheel drive was the Isekai Which was an Asian tractor badged Bolens. Too bad you didn't get the 4 wheel drive version. Or the factory front loader bucket. I would go crazy if I found one. Have seen several listed in Northern Idaho. I'm in NE. Washington state. Snow and mountains so need the 4x4 😢😢😢 Dandahermit

    I just bought a G152 with a Woods front bucket. It is pretty powerful for its size. Only thing is it is showing 287 hours but only has 3 digit spaces on the meter so it probably tripped the meter. Other than that, I love it. Just have to get used to it.

    I love little tractors. So cute and so strong. I guess the Massey Ferguson GC1705, or something like that is the modern version of this tractor.
    They could have been built in the same Japanese factory. I have an Iseki SF333. It’s a 4wd mower that is basically a tractor in reverse with the mower deck out front powered by the PTO, the driver facing the mower deck and the engine behind. Big wheels at the front, small wheels at the rear which steer the mower.
    It’s a good machine too.

    • @CountryFamily
      @CountryFamily  4 роки тому

      Thanks for the comment Karl. That Iseki you have sounds neat. There are some Iseki's that are almost identical to the Bolens. Only the paint scheme was different. Is yours a diesel or gas?

    Great video, I have the Kobota equivalent with a tiller on the back. The tiller works great but does make it easier to lift the front wheels. I also have a Massey 2925 with 3pt and loader. Both are great tractors but I would consider selling one to get a 4 wheel drive version with tiller, blade and loader.

    I've been thinking about getting a sub-compact tractors, but a new one appears out of my price range. One of these very similar to yours is for sale near me though, so I'm tempted. It's a 1991 model. Looks good, so I've texted the owner for more info. Price is about 50% higher than what you paid though.

    • @CountryFamily
      @CountryFamily  3 роки тому +1

      The way everything seems to going up in price, I'm not surprised tractor prices have gone up too. I still think it's probably worth it if in good shape. I've gotten a lot of use outta mine and it's still going strong. If you can find a 4-wheel drive model that would be even better. I'm just about to build a front snow plow for mine from a couple of garden tractor plows that I'm going to weld together. I better get going on that project cause winter will be here before you know it.

      @@CountryFamily I wound up buying the 91 g152. Came with a belly mower deck and 4 three-point attachments - a hitch receiver, single plow, disks, and (I guess) a cultivator. Seems to be in pretty good shape. Will try to post a vid once I get my act together with it. Seller included a DR leaf vacuum in the deal.

  • @pusabum
    @pusabum 5 років тому +1

    You might consider getting a clevis to use with the drawbar and hitching the pull chain to or through it. Much safer. It's not good to hitch higher than the rear axle since it promotes lifting the front end. Hitching at or below rear axle level (drawbar height) prevents front end lift. Even a small tractor like that wouldn't be good to have resting on top of you. I'd like to have one like it though!

  • @RyanTreks

    Only classic Bolens owners would understand and appreciate Bolens mowers or tractors. I merely have medium frame 1973 QT16 and the reissued 1992 1669 models (same exact model mowers, just different years of release). They have the forward and reverse foot pedal, thus no shifting, along with the standard attachments (snowblower...don't need that in Georgia, front push blade, and rear tiller), I only have the push blade. They TRULY do not make things like they used to.

    • @CountryFamily
      @CountryFamily  4 роки тому

      So true Ryan. I used to have a Bolens garden tractor with a snow blower, tiller, single-bottom plow, and a front blade (don't remember the model). I kick myself for ever selling that. It was so darn handy and well-built.

    Try pulling out stumps by lifting them straight up with the 3 point hitch. If its the same as my Satoh Beaver S370D it lifts 1274lbs. What category 3 point does yours have?

    • @CountryFamily
      @CountryFamily  6 років тому +1

      It's a category 1 hitch, but my trouble is with it only 2WD the front end is so light that it teeters the tractor so much if I try pulling straight up. I did pick up a cast iron weight but I'll have to build a bracket to attached it to the front end. I noticed on TractorData.com it gives the lift capacity for the Beaver, but it doesn't list it for my Bolens, but I imagine it's about the same. Thanks for watching.

    • @HomesteadOC
      @HomesteadOC 6 років тому +1

      Country Family The closer you can lift it to the tractor the better, if you try with that back blade youre too far out and guaranteed to teeter. Mines 4WD so a little heavier, but not by much. You could have one of your buddies stand on the front axle. My 370D says its a cat 0, but it looks an awful lot like yours with a blue paint job.

    • @CountryFamily
      @CountryFamily  6 років тому +1

      HomesteadOC yeah I need to get just a draw bar so I can get closer. TractorData lists it as category 0/1 and the backblade is a cat 1 so I'm thinking you can use both. Although I don't have much other experience with implements other than the backblade.

    Got a new (old) Bolens HT23 for the lawn and the small works around the house. I just completed a restoration and have videos on my channel. What matters on a tractor is not only the power, but also the traction. The G152 seems to have a very good pulling capacity. How much does it weighs?

    • @CountryFamily
      @CountryFamily  6 років тому +1

      The G152 weighs 1078 lbs according to TractoData.com. Having the locking rear differential helps immensely when pulling or pushing snow or dirt. It is very light in the front end though and one if these days I'm going to add some weights to the front. I was just using it yesterday to pull the topsoil away from where I'm putting a patio. I tilled the sod first and suprisingly it pulled that heavy dirt really well. Thanks for watching. I'll check out some of your videos too. 😀

    Truth be told about this tractor is that it's cramped quarters from an operator's stand point. If you're 6 feet or taller this tractor isn't for you. My knees hit the steering wheel when driving it and it's nothing but awkward trying to attempt to engage the diff. lock when seated. I have the exact same model with a factory front end loader and a weight box containing over 275 pounds out back on the 3 point hitch. This tractor is dangerous and it will upset on slightly uneven terrain with a load in the bucket if you 're not cautious. This tractor is top heavy for a sub-compact and the seating position puts you up to high causing more unbalance. On a positive note the tractor is reliable and fuel efficient. It was made in Japan for small Asian people.

    • @CountryFamily
      @CountryFamily  7 років тому +1

      I agree it can be a bit cramped. The worst part for me is climbing on and off, but the smaller size does allow it to get into places a bigger tractor can't. You're not kidding about fuel efficient, I can run it all day and not go thru a full tank. Thanks for watching and commenting.
