Jakob A. Smith alias The White Buffalo reiht sich mit seinen berührenden Country- und Folk-Songs in die lange Tradition des ureigenen US-amerikanischen Songwritings ein. Dabei braucht er sich nicht hinter seinen Vorbildern zu verstecken.
Smith wurde Mitte der 70er in Oregon geboren und zog mit seiner Familie als Kind nach Kalifornien. Seine Eltern hören viel Countrymusik, was ihn früh prägt. Lange beschäftigt er sich mit Musik nur als Konsument. Im College beginnt er schließlich, Gitarre zu spielen. Nach einem kurzen Ausflug ins Punkgenre besinnt Smith sich auf seine Wurzeln und beschäftigt sich mit Fingerpicking und klassischem Akustik-Songwriting. 2002 erscheint sein erstes Album, das direkt für Aufsehen sorgt.
Nicht nur durch seinen ungewöhnlichen Künstlernamen und seine fantastische Stimme fällt Smith auf, sondern auch durch sein Aussehen: Er ist groß und kräftig, trägt eine lange Mähne und Rauschebart - kurzum: Smith ist eine beeindruckende Erscheinung. Durch zahlreiche Tourneen erspielt er sich ein immer größeres Publikum, den Durchbruch in seiner Heimat bringt seine 2010er-EP "Prepare For Black & Blue".
Mit seinem fünften Album wagt er 2012 auch den Schritt nach Europa. Einem größeren, internationalen Publikum bekannt wurde The White Buffalo jedoch vor allem durch die Biker-Serie "Sons Of Anarchy", in deren Soundtrack viele seiner Songs vorkommen. Jakob Smith fühlt sich zur dunkleren Seite des Lebens hingezogen und behandelt Themen wie traumatisierte Veteranen, Menschen auf der Schattenseite der Gesellschaft, Verlustangst und die Schattenseiten der US-amerikanischen Geschichte.
