They really shouldn't have gotten rid of that addition. Even a crappy addition would have added way more value to the house because someone could have turned that into a rental/mother in law and fixed it themselves if they wanted it upgraded. Should have let the buyer decide to tear down or not.
Its because you're not only paying for the house, but also the location. There's a lot of things to do in Cali, lots of popular establishments, and its a popular tourist place. Its also really beautiful, but other places are too. That's where most of the price comes from though.
