Having complex and combined meshes imported as a single mesh into unreal can create light artifacts, but having a large amount of smaller pieces, specially for walls, can also create a different kind of visual artifact, because the engine automatically unloads meshes that are occluded by other meshes, so when you are moving in game, and you quickly turn to look back, you'll see in real time how the engine loads up some of those meshes into memory..
On some of the unreal live streams, they recommended to combine those smaller meshes into large sections so that the engine keeps them loaded..
Personally, I would generate the collisions outside of the unreal engine, combine the meshes in maya into manageable pieces, like wall sections, set of stairs, whole roof of a section, etc.. and then recreate the scene in unreal from those pieces.. that would reduce the draw calls from the cpu and also prevent the visual artifacts you get from the engine automatic unloading assets that are occluded.. I'm guessing the only problem that would come up could be those light artifacts when using lumen with complex geometry, but tweaking the directional light settings can reduce that a lot too.
Love the content btw, great video.
