What the fail to understand that some of the richest people in britain are farmers and you have bank nanagers and other profesional people quiting their jobs rearing pigs chickens and goats and sheep and growing food .
There are also Jamaican women who are just dressing up and looking good, waiting for men to support them. There are working men and working women. There are lazy men and lazy women.
As Jamaicans we need to invest in our country. If an Austrian can do it with all his immigration challenges why can't us who are born Jamaicans do the same....even if we are overseas....we see this time and time again hardwork will payoff! While I'm happy for their investment in Jamaica, I hope they don't turn on us and start kicking us out of our own little island. Not saying that this is the case with this gentleman. This is about this guy from Austria, who went to Jamaica to work as a hotel manager at the foreign-owned Half Moon hotel, who then decided to become the owner of his own farm in St Elizabeth. After seeing the difficulties that his hotel was undergoing, in terms of getting supplied by local farmers - which caused tons of headache in getting meals prepared on time for the guests - he then decided to set up his own farm to fill the dire need. So, he leased lands from people in the surrounding areas and started his own farm to fill the supply gap. His farm has become a huge success as a result and is now a burgeoning agricultural supply corporation in Jamaica. In the interview, he explained about the hardships of getting it all done, especially due to the fact that he was a foreigner - even though he had then recently married a Jamaican woman. It was not all a ‘piece of cake’ - as they say. For he had to first, battle the customary prejudice that Jamaicans have against seemingly “privileges foreigners who come to take advantage”. Then, he had to learn how to go about leasing properties in the correct legal manner, and then know how to grow the right crops for the most suitable soil, and so on, and so forth. On top of that, he had to make sure that his immigration papers were always in good standing - in terms of his working visa and resident status. Now, after twenty years, he has finally completed his naturalization status and is now a full-fledged Jamaican citizen - along with being a highly successful entrepreneur. It is quite an interesting story. And I wonder if he would qualify as one of the non-hated Whites in Ja. As opposed to Ukrainian Irena. Who, some people hate - I think mainly because she runs a regular yet successful UA-cam channel and is hence more visible to Jamaicans.

Seems like one of the most overlooked comment from this interview is the "soon come" culture which is prominent among our people. People often make plans with time constraints and when your timing depends on another showing up on time and they pull the "soon come" ting on you, then all timing is off. I say that to say this Martin is successful for 2 simple reasons, he understand the importance of being on time and being consistent.

I come to Jamaica very often. I am from Clarendon, so my experience from that vantage point, Clarendon, was always a very fruitful and farm oriented parish. In my area, I could not help noticing that bush has replaced what was once quite fruitful. I thought that farming there died with the older generation. I got lost in Alligator Pond, trying to take a coastal route to Black River. En route, I was blown away by the amount of farmlands with acres upon acres of scallions/onions and carrots in St. Elizabeth. This is a very compelling and inspiring story. Farming is one thing that I would definitely do if I return to Jamaica or invest there. As a youth growing up, everyone around us plated something. Almost every kind of fruit and food was in abundance.
As one from a little island, who lived from my parents'farming, It was very inspiring listening to the farmer in this video. I really appreciated him elaboration of his background before he became the star farmer in Jamaica. His starting experience was very well laid out as a solid foundation; not only for farming, but also for anyone to accomplish or triumph in anything in life; especially to establish a sound career. To make it in life people, above other values, must be courageous, inspired, disciplined, patient, humble, trustworthy, willing to listen to learn and prepare to battle and to prevail against the unseen forces that come to test everyone sometimes in life. (Like the talk goes, we got to have real backbones!) So, yes! It was marvelous as well as very encouraging to learn of Mr. Martin's successful life story! Congratulations Mr. Martin on your bravery and success as a farmer. May you continue to be the valuable example you are to other farmers as well as everyone who is truly ready to succeed in life. Amen! If all Jamaicans would plant, it would reverse the great deficit within the economy; we need to stop or import less foods cause we are not supporting our local farmers. Planting helps to prevent mudslides. How about planting almond trees, pistachio trees, walnut trees, beachnut trees, grape trees .... the fruit of these trees are healthy to eat. We could supply factories, etc. & build our own economy.

My mom is a farmer my dad was a farmer I was raised eating organic food I'm drinking organic bush what teas a natural healing remedies for I'm from St Ann's and I believe 100% in forming I know lift in the US but I believe in farming different motivate young people in Jamaica instant instead of standing on the street corner rubbing out their hand especially the young young men men off today take an example from this 4 minutes good.

Love this interview Throp. It is very helpful for us to see the good things that are happening. I agree with Martin regarding having a young minister of Agriculture, someone with energy to engage and excite young people to get involved in the business of agriculture. The most successful and scalable business are the ones that identify a market need and take steps to fill the gap. That is what he did. Most small business just seek to copy what others are doing.

I'm coming back home and I intend to plant my own food. The other side of this is the GMO seeds that the government has embraced now leaving the farmers in a tail spin. Africa rejected GMO seeds! I'm watching young farmers in Jamaica on youtube struggling with this because, this means they have to buy seeds again and again!
Very informative thank you for this segment. I think this farmer missed a question about GMO vs Non-GMO crops. Since food is our business, I need to know if the crops he produces are organic or GMO. I'm so proud of his efforts in creating a farming business and contributing to the development of Jamaica.
If you noticed the gentleman said that the first thing you need is to have a market. This gentleman was manager in a hotel so he had influence in the hotel industry hence a place where he could sell his produce. I was born in St Elizabeth and I'm still here in the heart of the farming community and most of the time people produce spoil right in the garden because they have no market. Sometimes a hotel supplier order the produce or tell you to plant a product and never comes back for it. My husband and I returned from the USA to farm and most of the time we just look a our produce rotting in the field and no one to buy it. It's not as easy as this gentleman is saying. He's making money cause the hotels are giving him the preference of buying his products. In Jamaica there's a lot of favouritism and the saying goes like this: "is not who you know, is who know you" Don't watch these interviews and think it's as easy as it sounds
What is the solution Can the small farmers come together and form a cooperative have a farmers market shop, as well as supply your local restaurant etc. Connect on social media. Chickonomy is a good one it's also fast turn over if need be tap into the diaspora partner with then and sell to local people. Jamaicans need to take back their business.

This is about this guy from Austria, who went to Jamaica to work as a hotel manager at the foreign-owned Half Moon hotel, who then decided to become the owner of his own farm in St Elizabeth.
After seeing the difficulties that his hotel was undergoing, in terms of getting supplied by local farmers - which caused tons of headache in getting meals prepared on time for the guests - he then decided to set up his own farm to fill the dire need.
So, he leased lands from people in the surrounding areas and started his own farm to fill the supply gap.
His farm has become a huge success as a result and is now a burgeoning agricultural supply corporation in Jamaica.
In the interview, he explained about the hardships of getting it all done, especially due to the fact that he was a foreigner - even though he had then recently married a Jamaican woman.
It was not all a ‘piece of cake’ - as they say. For he had to first, battle the customary prejudice that Jamaicans have against seemingly “privileges foreigners who come to take advantage”.
Then, he had to learn how to go about leasing properties in the correct legal manner, and then know how to grow the right crops for the most suitable soil, and so on, and so forth.
On top of that, he had to make sure that his immigration papers were always in good standing - in terms of his working visa and resident status. Now, after twenty years, he has finally completed his naturalization status and is now a full-fledged Jamaican citizen - along with being a highly successful entrepreneur.
It is quite an interesting story. And I wonder if he would qualify as one of the non-hated Whites in Ja. As opposed to Ukrainian Irena. Who, some people hate - I think mainly because she runs a regular yet successful UA-cam channel and is hence more visible to Jamaicans.

Seems like one of the most overlooked comment from this interview is the "soon come" culture which is prominent among our people. People often make plans with time constraints and when your timing depends on another showing up on time and they pull the "soon come" ting on you, then all timing is off. I say that to say this Martin is successful for 2 simple reasons, he understand the importance of being on time and being consistent.

I come to Jamaica very often. I am from Clarendon, so my experience from that vantage point, Clarendon, was always a very fruitful and farm oriented parish. In my area, I could not help noticing that bush has replaced what was once quite fruitful.
I thought that farming there died with the older generation. I got lost in Alligator Pond, trying to take a coastal route to Black River. En route, I was blown away by the amount of farmlands with acres upon acres of scallions/onions and carrots in St. Elizabeth.
This is a very compelling and inspiring story. Farming is one thing that I would definitely do if I return to Jamaica or invest there. As a youth growing up, everyone around us plated something. Almost every kind of fruit and food was in abundance.
I am super proud to listen to that Austrian talking about what Jamaicans can do to make a living from farming.
As one from a little island, who lived from my parents'farming, It was very inspiring listening to the farmer in this video. I really appreciated him elaboration of his background before he became the star farmer in Jamaica. His starting experience was very well laid out as a solid foundation; not only for farming, but also for anyone to accomplish or triumph in anything in life; especially to establish a sound career. To make it in life people, above other values, must be courageous, inspired, disciplined, patient, humble, trustworthy, willing to listen to learn and prepare to battle and to prevail against the unseen forces that come to test everyone sometimes in life. (Like the talk goes, we got to have real backbones!) So, yes! It was marvelous as well as very encouraging to learn of Mr. Martin's successful life story!
Congratulations Mr. Martin on your bravery and success as a farmer. May you continue to be the valuable example you are to other farmers as well as everyone who is truly ready to succeed in life.

Amen! If all Jamaicans would plant, it would reverse the great deficit within the economy; we need to stop or import less foods cause we are not supporting our local farmers. Planting helps to prevent mudslides. How about planting almond trees, pistachio trees, walnut trees, beachnut trees, grape trees .... the fruit of these trees are healthy to eat. We could supply factories, etc. & build our own economy.
Me really admire Martin's energy & the love he has for his dream! I wish all Jamaican's would take pride in farming. A country that cannot feed their nation is not good so we all need to get with the program.

Seems pretty feasible from the quick google search I did. You’d more than likely have to learn German though. But if that’s your dream I support you. Stay focused. Don’t let anybody discourage you. I agree with Martin regarding having a young minister of Agriculture, someone with energy to engage and excite young people to get involved in the business of agriculture. The most successful and scalable business are the ones that identify a market need and take steps to fill the gap. That is what he did. Most small business just seek to copy what others are doing.

I love farming when I lived and worked in Jamaica 🇯🇲 and worked at D and G I used to plant the stem off and plant and reaped a lot I love farming
I'm coming back home and I intend to plant my own food.
The other side of this is the GMO seeds that the government has embraced now leaving the farmers in a tail spin. Africa rejected GMO seeds! I'm watching young farmers in Jamaica on youtube struggling with this because, this means they have to buy seeds again and again!

If you noticed the gentleman said that the first thing you need is to have a market.
This gentleman was manager in a hotel so he had influence in the hotel industry hence a place where he could sell his produce.
I was born in St Elizabeth and I'm still here in the heart of the farming community and most of the time people produce spoil right in the garden because they have no market. Sometimes a hotel supplier order the produce or tell you to plant a product and never comes back for it. My husband and I returned from the USA to farm and most of the time we just look a our produce rotting in the field and no one to buy it.
It's not as easy as this gentleman is saying. He's making money cause the hotels are giving him the preference of buying his products.
In Jamaica there's a lot of favouritism and the saying goes like this: "is not who you know, is who know you"
Don't watch these interviews and think it's as easy as it sounds
What is the solution
Can the small farmers come together and form a cooperative have a farmers market shop, as well as supply your local restaurant etc. Connect on social media.
Chickonomy is a good one it's also fast turn over if need be tap into the diaspora partner with then and sell to local people.
Jamaicans need to take back their business.
