Got rid of the sofa, got two Lazyboy recliners. Decluttered much unwanted items not being used, incl closets and garage.
Good idea if you never have guests, but if you do have them, where do they sit? I've had dinners where, even with a dining set for 4, a couch, and two armchairs, there wasn't room for everyone. Luckily, the young folks didn't mind grabbing a cushion and sitting on the floor (supper was a simple soup and cornbread). Downsizing is all well and good, but you do have to consider your lifestyle as well.
I fractured my back and ruptured some discs. Prior, I had a serious hip injury. I have used an office chair to wheel around for cleaning tasks. I have reaching sticks in every room so I don't have to bend. I have also found it very helpful to have a little three tier craft cart on wheels. I use it to carry items from place to place. For example, clearing dishes from the dining area to the kitchen. Any items that are too heavy, or so numerous that I would have to make several trips, I load onto my little cart and roll them to where they belong.
I don’t understand, karenbaldwin. I tried that office chair and fell out of it. 😂 Thankfully, wasn’t hurt too badly. Do you use some kind of seat belt?
I used to use my Mom's walking chair to haul in the groceries, even tho' I was in my 50's. I bought a cart that I use now, great to use to make one trip from the car to the house.
I've had MS for 20+ years and can't do many of the cleaning chores I did in the past. Thank you this video because it gave me a number ideas of how to taker care of my chores!
5 (or 10) item start. When I'm facing chaos, I remove five or ten items at a time and put them away. My ten-item is for dishes piled in the sink! It makes such a difference in my attitude. I go from room to room and do that at least once. I either repeat another time in the day or the next. Sometimes counting the 5 items jump starts my clearing a space. Hope in seeing a little spurs me on to another 5.
Great video, I bought 2 double air fryers so I dont have to bend to remove things from the oven and having 4 drawers in the air fryers allows me to cook up to 4 things at once. I use disposable liners to keep them clean and minimize washing up. I also use a slow cooker, just put everything and leave it to cook itself. Lots of spares to put in the fridge or freeze for more meals.
thank you for your lovely message. I had meant to mention that there are disposable liners for slow cookers, but I doubt that they would appeal to us golden oldies. I have the same problem with counter space too, take care.
I like this video thank you for this. I suffer from chronic pains a lower back injury from working. I also have Fibromyalgia. Insomnia, and all the many symptoms that Fibromyalgia give. It is so frustrating and hard to do simple tasks. I clean every day and it’s hard not to not do it I like the way you said to break the days up to clean each part of the house. ❤👍🏾
Who are they kidding!!!! I'm 88! I am agile for my age--I'm able to walk without any support! The reason I don't clean my house is because "I JUST DON"T FEEL LIKE IT". I have air cleaners and I still have dust! Dust never goes away! Vacuuming the carpeting is nice but not easy! Making the bed is not difficult--but it kills my back! So I don't need any more objects to clean with!!!!
I admire your attitude. I don't clean my house when I don't feel like it either. That is why it looks like a bomb has gone off. I have a mess in every room. You must have a low level of clutter to make this work. I know I have too much stuff. I need to declutter to make it work.
It's good to have contrary opinions here also for a dose of reality. And if you make your bed too soon after getting up, the tiny bit of moisture generated during sleep will help the dust mites and ( I hope not but it happens) bedbugs make it through the day. YOu should leave the covers off for an hour for it to dry. Only a tiny bit of moisture most nights but that is all they need to thrive. And then cause you problems. Some days I just sort of gently fold the comforter and sheet at the foot of the bed and call it done.
I have chronic pain from Fibromyalgia, Osteoporosis, Arthritis.. walking from room to room tires me out and creates more pain.. there are some good ideas in this video which I will definitely do. Thankyou for sharing. 😊
We have flat ones, for in the house and shoe cleaners outside. I put double sided tape on the bottom of the ones, in our house. We never trip over them. I also have a cushion mat in front of my kitchen sink that is made of rubber. It does slide some times, which I don't like, but it keeps me from standing on the hard floor.
My mother (who died 30 years ago) used to be a cleaning freak & ironed everything in sight, it was almost like her life’s work - I didn’t inherit her cleaning gene!! Her cousin, who passed in 1998, used to say “the dust will still be here when I’m gone”! As a 60 something with some back & knee issues I’ve adopted the same mantra!
@@16EllessWhen you take your T-shirts out of the washer, instead of putting them in the dryer, lay them out on a towel on your bed smoothing them with your hands. When they’re dry they look like they’ve been ironed.
Many good ideas in this video. Also, narrated as though by an actual human who understands punctuation, pronunciation, and grammar. However, I have to say that floor mats are a tripping hasard. I have to put one at the front door, but that's it.
Also setting up your coffeemaker just before you eat supper for morning! In the morning hit the button then go wash up while its brewing, set out your cup as well! Its also considerate while guests are sleeping if your an early riser!😊
My husband sets up the coffee maker the night before and we tell our guests, “Whoever gets up first, push the on switch.” If the guest is the early bird, they don’t have to root around for anything!🙌🏻
I switched to instant coffee because it was easier to just make a cup. I put all kinds of things in it so what's the difference? Chocolate protein powder, mushroom powder, etc
Great video, I'm not yet senior or disabled, but I just am overwhelmed with a large house with 7 dogs. i like the suggestion, to break down areas per week, I should be able to do that!
@@sjbutler2330 I'm not getting rid of my dogs, a schedule will help and I need to be more disciplined about it. Eventually, the dogs will pass on, they will not be replaced.
Another tip is to do part bed change on alternate weeks, so have a top and bottom sheet an pillowcases that can be taken off and replaced with similar, it means the duvet can stay on and be changed less often.
I used to take care of my Mother and I would put at least 3 bed sheets on the bottom, because she was bed bound. I would move her to one side and start pulling the top off, then have her scoot to the other side and remove the remainder of the sheet and she'd be on a clean sheet. But, every sheet had a protection cover under it (this was for incontinence).
I use a flat sheet under my duvet between it and my skin so when I change my bed the duvet cover is clean and I just then wash flat sheet, fitted sheet and pillowcases .This makes life alot easier especially if you have shoulder problems as really reduces the frequency of changing the duvet cover.

Young people, pay attention. You will be old one day and perhaps all alone. Live with less and live below your means and save money. I can barely do anything anymore and dont have ability to declutter. A little at a time but too little to make a dent. Clutter is dangerous. And then we feel guilty because we cant clean. Wish i could wake up and find that my fairy godmother has decluttered and cleaned everything. What joy!
oops. This would be me.....I'm going to try using my phone so I will know where the list is. Now I just have to keep track of where I put my phone two minutes ago.....
I'm 77 and lived in a one room apt for abt 18 yrs Get rid of what you don't need Be merciless You can hang a drape over the Table to store things behind it Also hide a corner with furniture and place things in That corner But cleaning took hardly any time or effort ! Keep on truckin' !
Divide into SECTORS. Kitchen today and tomorrow. Main room next day and day after. That's how they had to do it at Mount Vernon when preparing it to be the tourist draw that it is today. Second the "Get rid of what you don't need" although that is not an easy decision. That's why I bought a 2 bedroom condo, I wanted an extra room which occasionally is a true junk room though occasionally I battle through the clutter, like when I had to telework but couldn't use the living room because of some repair work going on. Took me a year to restore my "office" to the dining table. Just was not motivated.
Why do these seniors need such a big house ?? I have a Small house and it's hard to Keep it nice and clean I would kill myself trying to Clean it !! When i pass a big house i say to Myself " who cleans it?" - they Must have a maid
You would be surprised. A lot of them don't. My brother works for the electric company and used to go into a lot of those big houses. He said that most of them were a mess.
People have what they have, and it can seem to be an insurmountable task to go through everything involved with downsizing. My husband and I had a house.when we moved we purchased a double wide mobile home. It is more than enough for me, and, at 81, I still pay someone to clean. My back simply won’t take it anymore.
Selling up and moving is just such a HUGE project though. You don't know that you will be able to find an affordable place that you will like. A friend moved into one of those senior complexes, but it was totally wrong for her--she's very social and people pretty much kept to themselves, she had a LONG walk to the cafeteria, it cost more than the mortgage of the house she moved out of (two stories, too much for her to handle).
My parents bought my great grandparents house. And as Mom had spent so much time there as a child it just felt right. When she got older and sick. She had to move to town. Took about 3 months to get her moved.
When cleaning the window, do not do it.On a sunny day you will have streaks and do not spray the window directly but rather spray the paper or the towel instead
To prevent smell from garbage can in restroom. Put your favorite dryer sheet inside can. To keep floors clean in restroom, use swiffer mop with wet pads.
I use furniture sliders, and their great, but how do you get them under the furniture if you can't move anything? I still can lift up the furniture to place the sliders under, but after one or two are under, I have problems because the furniture starts sliding before I can get the others under.
3 adu.ts live here. 1 77 yr o.d, depressed, wo t leave house or drive. Me 57 disabled. Siand for 3 mins max, dont drive, most days pain is 7-8, cant to anything. 37 yr old with med issues, does everything but my mom wont alow him to clean out 2 hoarded bedrooms. Its dirty, a mess and depressing as hell. She will not allow strangers in house if we offer to pay. It sucks.
Oh, that's hard. I'm glad you have a 37-yr-old who can pitch in. I hope the hoarded bedrooms aren't sheltering vermin which would be a disease hazard--the 77yr old will likely not hear of it even though those spaces could be a health hazard to all. We, many of us anyway, hate giving up control of "our space" even if we are sharing it with others.
Start by tidying everything away, chucking out rubbish. Wipe things with a clean damp cloth including sofas and armchairs Dust surfaces. Vacuum everywhere. Repeat every 6/7 days. Keep kitchen and bathroom clean every day. Easy peasy!
These are great tips if your house is already clean, you have lots of money to spend on tools, and superman to do all the heavy lifting. What a load of garbage.
Not a load of garbage if in fact your house DOES meet those conditions. Sounds like you may need to move some stuff out. You might be able to just focus on the most important spaces to you. That happens to a lot of people, big house stuff but they really only live in 2 rooms and the nearest bathroom.
I have been slowly buying helpful daily living assistance items. Like most of your suggestions. Not the one on mats & rugs. I trip on them. They also require cleaning so not really help. Better to wasj floors than use a rug. I am 78, bad arthritis in knees, hips and hands. Timer for tasks is good. I cannot stand for long. Also have been overestimating time required to do larger tasks.
I haven't found a stick or handheld vacuum that actually sucks up dirt! Very disappointing to kerp buying stuff that doesn't work and causes more clutter until i take stuff to donate.
Pacing and doing different tasks/areas of the house on different days isn’t a bad idea…however- this only spreads the dirt & dust/animal hair all over again over the days that you don’t clean on that specific area. It would be like spinning on your bike in one spot not going anywhere! If you can’t get all the areas done at the same time. Very very frustrating
I had a friend, years ago, that had a pristine home. I asked her how she did that. She shared how she would do something in every room while she was in it. I found that to be very helpful.
Some are good ideas, however, some of the equipment to help( steam cleaner, mop buckets....) are quite heavy, not easy to use, need storage space, too expensive.
Those furniture covers he shows are too loose and a trip hazard. If you haven't started using coasters by the time you are 25, you're never going to use them. Plus, rings are unsightly, but they aren't something that require cleaning attention.
Some people TRULY care. Especially if they have antique furniture from their grandparents that neither their kids nor grandkids want and they consider too valuable for Goodwill. Plus, they already own it so why go for the extra expense.
@@1234cheerful , Yeah, but I have had coasters since I was married, and I grew up with them. Also, a ring would be something that has to be fixed, not cleaned. Maybe this should have been titled, "How to keep your home company ready even if you can't move so well". Though I suppose it doesn't have the same cache as Cleaning Hacks.
My mom used to iron everything. Towels, sheets, daddy's underwear, lol, dishtowels, probably because we hung clothes out to dry and they were a little stiff. Me, I'm not even sure where my iron is.
Also people should come to visit You....not the state if your home! If that bothers them they can stay home or come over and set a day an time to give you a hand!,❤
The only way you can keep your house clean and organized is: Do not have your grand children, do not cook , and don’t host any event!79 years with lots of pain and ache!
I noticed that too, and it reminded me of an advice columnist ages ago who said that she ironed her towels, but when called on it she admitted she had a maid and had no idea if they were ironed or not (!), then sentenced herself to 20 lashes with a wet noodle. 😂
I laughed. Grandma may have dementia so granddaughter is humoring her while grandma talks about the old times that she remembers well. Or I guess the prop department didn't find any pillowcases in time for the shoot.
I am 75. I remember ironing all our sheets and pillow cases when I was a girl. My Mom made sure I ironed everything. Today I do not even own an iron. When I made baby quilts for my grandchildren I heated up a very clean pan on the stove and that worked fine on a towel on my kitchen counter when I needed to press open seams and such.
I bought a room a but didn't like it. It needed to be emptied often. It doesn't get close enough to edges or clean baseboards. I find just using a broom on the tike us better clean, faster and quicker than the bother of a roomba.
@@emmsue1053 Use furniture sliders only under a bed which is in a corner. Had to have granddaughter put them in place this time. Without them I could not make the bed. Also have a romba, dust mop is faster. Still can block off a room and have it cleaned while I sleep. Main draw back is I'm a bit compulsive about cleaning the romba and that increases the time to the point I no longer use very much.
Maybe don’t bother ironing your towels like the girl helping in this video is doing. Cut down on the amount of work you need to get done. I have never ironed my towels and my home is clean.
would have been nice to hear from seniors or disabled themselves - sounds like a paid professional and not someone experienced and knows of what they are speaking - sorry - guess my expectations were to high - will listen again when not so stiff and sore 🇨🇦🙏

It's starting to look a little better here.I've got rid of 60% and I'm still working on getting rid of more.I can see the floor I can see the wall.I can see a lot of things where before my coach was always full of stuff. My clothes were always all over the place. Freedom comes with less. Besides you don't want to Be remembered as the Grandpa or the Grandma that all she did or all he did was clean and sort and organize stuff. And then when you die , you've got a ton of unnecessary things set your family doesn't even want.
Think of all the stuff that you have been hanging on to for last 5 years. Are you using them?
If you were to die in six months what good is any of the stuff that is in front of you right now. Live for today for tomorrow.May not come and forget about the past.
Life is short.Do not live with regret
I'm back. I thought of a hack. About 15 years ago, I stopped pretending that I did not need paper towels in the bathroom, and installed a paper towel holder on the wall. Now, any visitors don't have to worry about using my towels, and I wipe down the sink and toilet a lot more often.
Got rid of the sofa, got two Lazyboy recliners. Decluttered much unwanted items not being used, incl closets and garage.
Decluttering makes everything feel so much lighter.
Bravo!

Week one... Let the man of the house clean 1\2 of the time!!!
That’s so clever! I bet that little cart makes a huge difference.
@@goldenyears101 It really does. I can load it up instead of making 10 trips from room to room. And it takes the weight of items I just can't carry.
I used to use my Mom's walking chair to haul in the groceries, even tho' I was in my 50's. I bought a cart that I use now, great to use to make one trip from the car to the house.
@@vannieloumarshall7232 My friend uses her rollator now that she is graduated to canes (hip surgery, knee surgery). She calls it her "wheelbarrow."
I've had MS for 20+ years and can't do many of the cleaning chores I did in the past. Thank you this video because it gave me a number ideas of how to taker care of my chores!
You are so welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful.
God bless you and take care.
May God give you extra strength
5 (or 10) item start. When I'm facing chaos, I remove five or ten items at a time and put them away. My ten-item is for dishes piled in the sink! It makes such a difference in my attitude. I go from room to room and do that at least once. I either repeat another time in the day or the next. Sometimes counting the 5 items jump starts my clearing a space. Hope in seeing a little spurs me on to another 5.
I do that too!
Sounds great!
Genius! I have 2 but only use 1 right now due to counter space. I do use the liners too.
thank you for your lovely message.
I have fibromyalgia too,as well as osteoarthritis & osteoporosis.
Same. I hear ya. 🙁
Who are they kidding!!!! I'm 88! I am agile for my age--I'm able to walk without any support! The reason I don't clean my house is because "I JUST DON"T FEEL LIKE IT". I have air cleaners and I still have dust! Dust never goes away! Vacuuming the carpeting
is nice but not easy!
@@thatswhatisaid8908 sorry if a gave a false impression. Talk about clutter!!! I took all my downsizing with me
It's good to have contrary opinions here also for a dose of reality.
My back's stuffed, I'm in constant pain. I'm not particularly an older senior but this video is very halpful.
That’s great to hear. I hope you find some relief!
Today is the youngest we'll ever be, and the oldest we've ever been 😮
I have chronic pain from Fibromyalgia, Osteoporosis, Arthritis.. walking from room to room tires me out and creates more pain.. there are some good ideas in this video which I will definitely do. Thankyou for sharing. 😊
I, too, have the same problems. I have good days where I’m able to get a few things done. Other days, not so much.
Good tips except the rugs and mats, especially layered mats. Extreme fall risk. Falls are greatest danger to seniors. No rugs!
Absolutely! I can't even tell you the number of patients I've worked with who've broken hips from tripping on rugs! Retired nurse
I find cleaning as you go along very helpful.

@16Elless
If ANYTHING requires ironing, I do not have it in my apartment!!!😌
@ Good call! I used to iron quite a lot but barely anything now. I’ve made peace with unironed T Shirts!
I have a programmable coffee pot, so I make it the night before.
I switched to instant coffee because it was easier to just make a cup. I put all kinds of things in it so what's the difference? Chocolate protein powder, mushroom powder, etc
I bought 5" risers under the legs of my bed and couch. My car is higher also. Yes, I'm tall, so this saves my knees!
Thank you! ❤
Why, in the first part of this video, was the girl ironing terry towels? Who does that?
Exactly, I was in shock about that also
Great video, I'm not yet senior or disabled, but I just am overwhelmed with a large house with 7 dogs. i like the suggestion, to break down areas per week, I should be able to do that!
And you love them ALL and they love you back! But still shed.....
Reduce the number of dogs! Less work!
@@sjbutler2330 I'm not getting rid of my dogs, a schedule will help and I need to be more disciplined about it. Eventually, the dogs will pass on, they will not be replaced.
This video has some of the best practical tips I have seen. It was very informative.
Thank you so much for your video.

What joy!

Get rid of what you don't need
Be merciless
You can hang a drape over the
Table to store things behind it
Also hide a corner with furniture and place things in
That corner
But cleaning took hardly any time or effort !
Thank you for addressing the problem of pain.
Why do these seniors need such a big house ?? I have a
Small house and it's hard to
Keep it nice and clean
I would kill myself trying to
Clean it !!
When i pass a big house i say to
Myself " who cleans it?" - they
Must have a maid
Um conjunto de instruções que são uma boa ferramenta para todas as idades. 😍👏👏👏🖐🇵🇹

What kind of sliders for carpets If your furniture is on carpet?
Plastic sliders work well on carpets
@doreenterry7026 Thank you beautiful Doreenterry for your kind reply.
The way I do it is one corner at a time, some things are tricky so I’ve used a wedge to stop movement.

Mental issues going on there, possibly dementia?
Start by tidying everything away, chucking out rubbish.
Wipe things with a clean damp cloth including sofas and armchairs Dust surfaces. Vacuum everywhere.
Repeat every 6/7 days.
Keep kitchen and bathroom clean every day. Easy peasy!
You can fashion your own reusable cloths for a Swiffer using old towels, flannel or cotton knit from discarded clothing.
Be careful about tripping over pets. My black cat sleeps in the hall at night so I always turn on a light when I’m up during the night.
So, 2 days a week, 3 days apart? Or, is the animal agreeable to being vacuumed? Some are. Depends on their size and hearing and general attitude.
I had a friend, years ago, that had a pristine home. I asked her how she did that. She shared how she would do something in every room while she was in it. I found that to be very helpful.
Good tips 😊
You are welcome! 😊
Tips are very helpful. Thanking everyone for pitching in.
Anyone believe that the people he quotes from are real? Good luck to all of you. I have to go clean now.
Some are good ideas, however, some of the equipment to help( steam cleaner, mop buckets....) are quite heavy, not easy to use, need storage space, too expensive.
I do Not Use a dustpan instand use my Vakuum to pick up what I Sweet up
Excellent idea. Saves time. I have one of those cheap light wand vacuums that does very well for this.
This is a great idea.
Rug one is dangerous as even slip resistant are big trip hazards if you are older or have a disability.
@@1234cheerful ,
Yeah, but I have had coasters since I was married, and I grew up with them. Also, a ring would be something that has to be fixed, not cleaned. Maybe this should have been titled, "How to keep your home company ready even if you can't move so well". Though I suppose it doesn't have the same cache as Cleaning Hacks.
I live in a single room with kitchenette and a small bathroom. A small living area is less area to keep clean - and it's less expensive to rent.

My mom used to iron everything. Towels, sheets, daddy's underwear, lol, dishtowels, probably because we hung clothes out to dry and they were a little stiff. Me, I'm not even sure where my iron is.

Those moving robots are dangerous for the elderly
Not at all, it can be contained in a separate room.. I would argue furniture sliders are a risk.
I bought a room a but didn't like it. It needed to be emptied often. It doesn't get close enough to edges or clean baseboards. I find just using a broom on the tike us better clean, faster and quicker than the bother of a roomba.
mine is on order- it programs for each room at a time
@@emmsue1053 Use furniture sliders only under a bed which is in a corner.
