GO PRACTICE!
Let me shut and I go practice.
Sir -- it's snowing outside.
Ok
Can't wait for the good weather and go practice and attend some more courses. Thanks for the video!
Ay ay captain🧑✈️
My man is selflessly putting out life-saving exercises so that we ride for as long as we can. Easily the best content creator for the motorcycle community.
I practice yours and Superbike School’s advice EVERYTIME I go riding. I ride everyday for work or just enjoyment. Last week whilst riding here in Australia, I was coming into a 60km zone from an 80 zone on a dual carriageway (two lanes each way). I had two cars in the left lane and one behind me. As we slowed down, the car behind me didn’t. I had to fit between the car next to me in the left lane and the car going past me 20km/hr faster than I was going…she was on the phone and didn’t slow down until 6-7 car lengths in front of me. She apologised and said she didn’t see me. I ALWAYS check my mirrors when I’m slowing down. Saved my life. Cheers mate!
Very good reminder about the rear view mirror.
This channel, DanDanTheFireman, and Moto Control are my top 3 instructional motorcycling channels. No particular order, you're all just as passionate and spread amazing, life-saving knowledge.
If I pass my permit test tomorrow, it's because of this channel and the many others on the safe riding crusade.
Edit - I passed! Picking up my first bike next Monday. The start of a beautiful journey.
McRider is a pretty good channel, too. Canyon chasers as well.
congrats i passed mine today
@@vfwm4879 Very nice! Ride safely, and have fun! I've been at it almost one month now. Looking forward to the one year milestone.
I expect you do be able to do pretty much anything, but the mere repetition by your buddy demonstrates the immediate benefits of just a few minutes of practice.
Yes!
This is wild to hear myself say but I think I have probably been riding longer than you are old, and I am stunned at how much I have learned from your channel! I have ridden, literally across the U.S. and lived in several states with a motorcycle as my primary vehicle, I currently live in L.A. and commute most of the year on my bike. The fact that I have learned so much from your drills is scary/ surprising to me that I have gone this long without ever being in an accident with another vehicle. I chalk it up to experience in "reading" a situation, planning ahead, and just dumb luck. It is humbling and I really appreciate what you do! Thanks man.
That’s because years riding doesn’t mean more and more skill or knowledge. I’ve been through 24 different courses and used to teach 8 of them.
@@MotoJitsu Absolutely! It also means that you should always keep actively learning.
seek out more training and get into it MotoJitsu.com/courses
One of my biggest fears is getting rear ended after doing an emergency stop by someone following too close or not paying attention. Will definitely set this up and practice!
back on a bike after 25 years off. I was raising kids. Your lessons are life saving. I thought I could ride. I am humbled by my ignorance. But I am learning.
Thanks for this. I like to practice tight continuous circles, figure 8's, and emergency stops to warm up before each time I ride. The emergency stops - especially the swerve and stop - have always made me nervous. It is the one place where I feel most nervous to stretch my comfort zone, and yet I know that because if that, it is even more important that I practice them. This video is just another reminder to practice what scares me. I also see the value of this particular drill. Preparing myself for manuevers like this one could save my life, legs, head - me. It could save me.
Downshifting to 1st gear is very important on small bikes, because trying to take off in 2nd gear is quite slow (higher revvs, slipping the clutch), in 3rd is barely possible. But 1st gear will let you jump off the way quick enough. As a 300cc bike rider, I am learning too.
Love this drill! We do this with our students as well. My favorite most practical drill. I love yelling at the students pretending I am the truck about to rear end them and it gets their adrenaline up and they often stall. We also teach to slip the clutch more here than usual.
Another great reminder!! Great training video!
On a ride this past weekend I randomly got a friend in a big empty parking lot to do some quick u-turns and small circles. It was awesome.
Excellent. Reall world training/practice. Probably save your life someday.
i really love these videos that force me to practice certain skills.
i am not confidenteough to pot videos of myself doing tem to, but i still do them fr myself, and i think that`s all that matters
Good idea! Thanks man!
Outstanding drill! Set it up and practiced today.
Thanks for putting this out there! As a bonus I found a huge abandoned parking lot just a few miles from the house. I’ll be going there before and after most if not all of my rides.
Thanks for taking your time to share important information. I for one have learned so much from your videos. You are the reason I passed my test and got my certification. Please don't stop. The message you share is very important to keep riders alive.
Oh man, great stuff, Greg. Real world training by a real rider saving lives! Please keep it up!
Great tip! Thank you!
Totally awesome, thanks man!
Looks so cool! Gonna practice this.
Thank you!
Thanks for putting these drills out there. I just spent the last 2 hours doing this drill.
Outstanding practical way to practice this life saving maneuver. I'm going to practice now. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a great drill and fun to practice too. Thanks!
Can’t wait to practice this! Awesome drill Greg. 👌👌
Great drill, thanks for putting it together.
Always learn alot from you. Thanks for what you do. Your tips has made me a safer and better driver. Cheers
Fantastic exercise, thanks for sharing
Thanks Greg!
Thanks for this info Greg.Your Belgian fan.👌👌👌
Great vid! Thnx.
Thank you
Im from the netherlands and the first part is what we call the decel test, where you quickly get to 50km/h, break hard, shift down 1 gear and swerve. Your explanation is (to us) the stop test into leaving a parking spot. If you'd like to see our explanation (its in dutch but its also shown) look up "avb vertragingsoefening" and "avb stopproef"
Also we learn the evasive move as well, which is "avb uitwijkoefening"
Swerving around a bus!! 💯👍🏽 great skill to practice!!
great exercise. Thanx for sharing 😉
Thankyou!
20 feet = 6.096 metres, 20mph = 32.187km/h for those not on freedom units. Great exercise will definitely be practising this thanks
I intend on returning to riding tomorrow and thanks I think I will start with that breaking technique.
Excellent video! Thank you!
Share it!
Will give this a go at my next practice session 👍
Excellent drill, practice, practice, practice.....
Great channel! Nice bike
I know you're SD based...mapped out where this is b/c I recognize the coaster....We just got my 17yo daughter a Vstrom 650 XT for her first bike and I'm struggling to find a place in SD to go to for her training and a lot of refreshers for me. Glad I found your Channel through Doodles on a MC. We'll be out there in the coming weeks.
Seesh dude I don't even own a motorcycle but about to buy one. Yr channel really helps me build confidence.
" the idiot behind you is still on facebook" so true. I am a truck driver and the stuff I see people doing in their cars is amazing. They are doing everything but paying attention. We bikers have to out think everyone.
This sounds like a good fun challenge to play with :) will do next riding day! might throw in something extra
This is indeed very important skills to practice to get you out of this situation. Thanks for sharing! Would it be safer to prioritize the maneuver to be at the back of the car rather than in front of it? Reason I asked is that, there might be scenarios when the car driver would also take off after realizing you stopped and you taking the front might be more dangerous. Of course it’s on case by case basis and practicing quick judgement and decision making is key. Thanks brother!
You do a really great job! Thank You!
Now, could You pls elaborate a bit more why do You make a stop&start right before the car (obstacle) ?
PS. As I'm not a native speaker and I could have misunderstood something or just miss the section when You were clarifying this.
Very good video! In The Netherlands this is part of the exam, amongst other skills that you need to prove of exam and after that you can start with your ‘road exam’.
Thanks good buddy. I’ll practice it when it warms up in Vermont. Lol.
Love your channel. Three skills to practice. Make sure your tires are properly inflated! I am always looking in my mirrors when braking hard. Words to my students: “practice, practice and practice some more.” In an interview with BBKing I asked “ BB are you still practicing?” He replied “ I try to practice every day, but I don’t practice enough”. He had just celebrated his 80th birthday.
if you don't use it, you'll lose it.
Great exercise 👍I practice emergency stopping and swerving every time I ride. I practice stop/swerve once or twice a week in a safe parking lot. I’ve been preaching practicing these skills for years. Nice to see it done with cones.
Good stuff!
This is actually one of the 5 tests you have to pass on the track to get your motorcycle licence in Norway, probably same for other countries as well.
If you don't do the 5 tests properly there is a chance the driving instructor won't even take you out in actual traffic.
I struggled the most with this one, swerving and turning really slow in a small garage 🤓
Here too, but not all at the same time. Either way, without consistent practice you’ll loose all the skill
@@MotoJitsu For sure, got my lisence last year, and started feeling OK with the bike end of season.
For sure doing a refresher course when spring hits.
Thanks for keeping us safer ✌️
Excellent! I can’t wait to practice that exercise.
get to it!
Thanks for sharing your skills
:)
Thank you!!!
welcome
This is a great drill. One of the reasons why I sold my motorcycle and got a scooter was to avoid the "extra" steps. Clutch in, down to first, clutch out and go (without stalling). With the automatic scooter, less things to think about. That's my 2 cents.
either way, without practice....you're screwed
Car blowing an intersection and me locking up my rear brake is how I wrecked in 2015.
Will practice this tomorrow
Did this drill about 12 times. Getting on the gas after the stop is the challenge.
On the plus side I found a massive closed CITI bank parking 3 miles from my house. Super excited about that!
My buddy filming me did it on his Gold wing. The DCT in auto mode didn’t react fast enough so he was stuck in 2 gear and the bike died! That was a learning experience!
Thanks for the great drill!
Just to add to the comment for any DCT owners- I was the guy on the DCT and it freaked me out. The bike never stalled on me before , but I really never did such a hard stop as I did in the drill. The good news is that the Goldwing can stop on a dime, the bad news is it might stall and then you could be smashed potatoes. Also since it never happened I just tried to start it again but instead of coming up in N it was stuck in 1st gear. I tried shutting down and tried restarting and it just stayed in gear. The simple (now obvious fix) was just move the bike forward or back a bit for the gear to disengage. As soon as I did that, it went back into N.
Great stuff as always, man
Thanks, share it!!
Thanks!
thank you!
Making that GS look like a dirt bike. Nice!
Awesome 😎
Love this! Will be practicing it tomorrow at the LA Zoo parking lot if anyone wants to join. I have cones. Also if youre ever there and want to join. Im on the black XG750A
I have done this in my MSF course, and it was very fun to do
Very nice GS!
It is amazingly common for a driver to turn left in front of you, realizing it’s bad, they panic and stop right in your path.
Had it happen to me.
Totaled a 80’s Comaro.
All he had to do was keep going and I would have gone behind him. But nope. I was fine, he was walking home.
yup, so practice....a lot
Good video. You need to add a shoulder patch on both sides that would have the Star Wars Empire logo. Then that black outfit makes sense…like a fighter pilot 😂.
What about adding a car on the left of the car a few feet back as that other oncoming driver might be on another social media platform😂.
That’s one of the things that would concern me that a left turning car is in front and you swerve left to go behind that car and there is another inattentive car behind that one coming at the rider head on. So a double swerving if you will.
Nice, id also try a headcheck before that swerve.
Hahaha! Yeeehaaw! I’m gonna have lotta fun with this!
🤘🏻😎
Great tips Greg. I might add the rider must also be prepared for the stopped car to panic and move as you swerve to go around them.
Obviously
@@MotoJitsu My comment was more for the inexperienced riders watching your channel. I Learned the hard way when I was a young rider in the Navy full of myself (as a former Marine you know what I mean). Had a car pull out in front of me from of a blind driveway. I braked hard and swerved to go around the backside of her. She put her car in reverse and backed up. It did not go well for me....
Love your videos really help out new rider. You mention here on braking with front brake on anything bar cruiser. Why surely the same applies ? I ride a triumph speedmaster cruiser.
That’s not what I said
Sorry I do not mean to offend and obviously got confused as a new rider I was just trying to understand does the cruiser not stop as effective as a stand up bike when applying smooth front brake pressure ?
Again, you didn’t listen to what I said. Front brake is always the same on any bike.
thank you for the clarification.
I have to practice in quite a different way, I can use a parking lot, but it's always full of people and traffic so I wouldn't be able to set up cones or spend that much time in one place. But I can swing in, practice for a minute on the move, and then leave before anyone at the store gets annoyed with me. It works, I just adapt. Naturally it's closed up outside business hours. Now this is something I never thought about practicing before.
Obviously go when it’s not busy then
Oh that beautiful San Diego weather built for riding
exactly
Counter steering and brraking
Gonna set this up tomorrow arvo
Hey Sensei! This is undoubtedly a must have skill for any rider. The problem that I have is when I come to my emergency stop, I hesitate to check my left mirror if I am swerving left and visa versa. Shouldn't we be concerned to check that left lane for a car if we are looking to swerve left? Maybe I am just overthinking it, but if you manage to avoid one incident by emergency stopping and another incident from behind, it still seems like the lane next to the side you swerve ought to be figured into the picture and drill. Any thoughts? Always great content, Honorable Sensei!
You should always be aware of who's behind you before you even have to stop or swerve
I've saved a lot of your videos on my one note in a section called motor cycle. I have cones and I set them up. I don't a large parking lot (not the size you use in your video) I am afraid I don't have the proper room to do the drill. In reality how big of a space do I need?
Thanks for teaching us to arrive alive. Cars are getting more and more aggressive.
How much bend do you want in your elbow? I ask this because I want to know if I need to replace my handlebar because I feel like I am doing the elbow in and lean to turn wrong.
I think the best option is to turn right to exit the intersection, no? You don't know if the stopped car is going to continue forward or reverse.... Good practice drill either way.
all depends on the situation
We are fans of also practicing looking in your mirrors after the quick stop. If you don't practice, you're not going to do it in real life. Also, continue practice with the rear brake as well as IT DOES HELP WITHIN THE FIRST 3' OR SO, so why wouldn't you use it?
Would dipping too much out you at risk of hitting your shoulder or handle bars on the obstacle?
I got lucky, I had to brake hard on the Highway just out of Anchorage. The guy in the truck behind me couldn't stop but chose to go off the road instead of hit me. I didn't even see him until he was beside me.
Very usefull for lanesplitting too, and running from the cops, blowing through redlights if that's your thing..
Got kicked out of both parking lots I practice at for "Disturbing the Peace" and "Going above 5mph"🙃☠️
Find a different spot
This might be ok on wide roads in other countries but if in UK you " swerve to avoid, chances are there's another vehicle coming or a side kerb to hit, the roads are far narrower also full of pot holes.
Good in theory but likely to still cause injuries and or responsibility for UK based biker when THEY hit something else.
This scenario just happened in my home town. The outcome the truck behind the motorcycle didn’t stop. Both riders on the bike were pushed into the vehicle they avoided only to be thrown off their bike. Causing the death of the bike passenger, and the driver of the truck that hit them. Motorcycle driver in the hospital recovering.
Thats a great drill to improve riding skills in general. Skills that I believe many riders lack, and all should have. OK so I'm not knocking the drill. Its great. However.... its not the correct drill for the scenario you described. If you want to use that scenario as an example, fine. But I think you should have at least pointed out the proper technique for that situation.. Which is swerve, not brake. (I know you know this, but for anybody reading my comment who does not know) Swerving to avoid an obstacle is quicker, hence more effective, then braking, as well as safer because it removes the risk of being rear ended. To prove what I'm saying... Don't react until the second gate. If you attempt to brake at the second gate, you will hit the obstacle. If you swerve at the second gate, you will avoid the obstacle.
I think it is a cool exercise but realistically I would just slow then swerv behind the car. I wouldn't come to a complete stop if there is a car behind me because they are slow to react and you can slow faster than they can react. Also, they might not stop well if they do react. They could slide or abs kicks off and they panic. Who knows. it isn't like people practice emergency braking in cars.
Cars vs bikes emergency braking is no where near the same
Rear brake: at least on my old 125 dt, applying the rear brake lowered the whole bike closer to the ground (compressing the rear monoshock due to rear wheel "moving backward" thereby "stretching" the bike).
Wouldn't this make a difference on overall braking efficiency? I.e. combined front and rear brake lowering center of gravity visavis front brake only?
To try to do that is a waste of time, just worry about the front brake
Hi dutch rider here great to know. Its standard part of our motorcycle classes
Here too, so what? Doesn’t mean you’ve mastered it. If you don’t continually practice your skills, you’ll lose them
You forgot to add, while stopping you need to honk the horn, and while stopped you need to one finger salute the car. Otherwise very thorough.
I bought 20 cones... now I need to find good spot to measure and setup all this
BOOYAH! Greg handling the GS like a duke200 😅😅😅😅 jesus man. #ShutUpAndPractice
Definitely could save life.
In real life situation might have to press that imaginary jet eject button and forget about your bike. Need those instinct sentelal reflexes or dead.
I wish my ex biker knew about this stuff after travelling from Greece to Scotland and Portugal and all over Europe and Greece. So maybe we were lucky. Now am 66 don't miss ex but miss the bike 😅.
I’ve found dollar stores have little cones for cheap.
If your bike has a split brake system you have to use the rear break, if you don't you're only using one caliber on your front brakes.
Not true
@@MotoJitsu how is this not true? Honda goldwing gl110's, gl1200's, and gl1500's are all set up as I described. A plot braking system is different than a linked braking system. A split system splits the front two calibers and one is controlled by the rear pedal, a linked system if you you pull the front break a little pressure goes to the rear and if you step on the rear a little goes to the front. You can check out robot's garage video titled "Honda gl1500 goldwing, "full brake fluid change"!" If you don't believe me. Its only about 7 minutes long, sorry about the extra quotation marks , he has them in his title. Great technique though I've been practice the swerving take off for years and need to add in the run up stop to it. I'm being long winded here, but it boils down to know the bike you're riding and how it functions.
Because no matter what the bike's technology is or the bike itself, it doesn't change the technique of how to stop as fast as possible.
If you are only activating one caliber you're reducing your stopping ability by close to half
And all of you enter intersection 20 mph ? Good job!
