  • Black mini pebble pool plaster is definitely in our top 3 of pool interiors. Being a pool contractor is a lot of fun but can also be a challenge! Choosing materials is one of the challenges, they need to both look good and perform well! My name is Matthew Rhoades and I’m the contractor and designer behind Sierra Build Co. - thank you for watching!

Thank you for showing the finished pool, the FamBam wants a dark quartz plaster and now that know what it'll look like.... I really like it.

It sets quickly because they add calcium as they mix it. If they dont add calcium it could potentially take hours before its time to expose the aggregate.
It IS a Portland cement based product. NPT Pool Plaster (and all other plasters) are a mixture of Portland cement, aggregate (pebble, glass bead, quartz, marble), color pigments. It came out very "wet" because they probably mixed in a plasticizer that makes the plaster use the water more efficiently and makes it easier to work with a trowel and most importantly makes it easier to pump without adding additional water. The more water you mix into portland cement the weaker it becomes.
Just a few more bits of knowledge. The only difference in pool plaster brands is the quality of the aggregate. Pebbletec is a "Premium" brand because there pebbles are very old and dense, they measure this through a scale called MOH hardness, that measures porosity. The more dense the stone and less porous, the better it is for a waterproof environment. That being sad, who cares if the pebble will last 1,000 years or 100 years. The portland cement between the pebbles is the REAL failure point. Swimming pool water is very aggressive and will slowly eat away the cement that binds the pebble together. You get about 15-25 years out of any pool finish if you treat water correctly over the life of the pool.

Little bit of both-darker plaster is more likely to have a “blotchier” appearance, many people still choose it knowing that though, it can even give it a more natural look with a little unevenness to the color. Definitely makes the water warmer too

Thanks for the video. How do they get out of the deep end when they are finished? Can they just walk over what they just did?
