    For the technically-minded 1%, Rear Axle Steering does not affect over- or under-steer. Nor is it used like earlier designs to make parking easier. Porsche RAS is used to create the effect of a shorter wheelbase at low speeds making the car turn more quickly in tight curves, and then as you go faster it transitions into the effect of a longer wheelbase making the car much more stable at high speeds. So the new RS is bigger but turns in tight as if it were smaller than the original RS. Amazing!

    ... My Dad had a 1967 Porsche 912 (Guldens Mustard Yellow), the 911 body with a 4 cyl flat engine, not much off the line but buzzed on the thruway which was perfect for Frank as he was an airline pilot and it was only a mile or so to the interstate ';-) Thanks for helping me relive an Ol-Daddy memory Jay!!!

      I prefer the 912 over the 911 of that time, still as the 356 engine and was a lot more balanced and nibble compared to the 911 because of the smaller engine and weight.. often regarded as the "Purist Porsche".

    I am not disparaging Patrick in any way by saying this; as a long time fan of JLG, I always enjoy watching Jay's face as he drives something new, challenging and enjoyable. Jay has a very readable expression, and I would have have enjoyed seeing him drive the new Porsche with the rear wheel steering around Willow Springs. He needs not to compete with P.D. at all, just to see him experience the new RS model would be cool. As always, TY Jay and company for sharing this video with us. Is it possible to get the full JLG shows on UA-cam? I TY.

    • @veemacks7255
      @veemacks7255 8 років тому +3

      So a track with 20 turns that has a lap record of 60 seconds, in a GT3 RS will take 0 seconds. Wow. Nice going there Porsche.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 8 років тому +10

      What he said wasnt necessarily false. "Seconds" can also mean anything more than 1. And if you know race tracks and lap times, I dont think there is any track (aside from a kart track) that has 20+ turns with a driver able to lap it in 60 seconds or less. For reference, WSIR (the big track next to where this was filmed) only has 9 turns and a fast car (like the GT3RS) is anything that can lap under a 1:25-6-7. I doubt a classic 2.7 RS would get anywhere near a 1:35, likely more into the 1:45 range which is right in line with what was said.

    I suppose there is a new modern way they make back wheels turn, but still I wouldn't call it "new technology of back wheel turning" . It sounds like this Porsche is first to have it. I remember Honda in the 80s but I'm sure there are earlier cars that I don't know about. I agree that the price for the old race Beetle is too high but there must be something overly rich people can do to separate them from ordinary people. Jay though it's a true enthusiast with both feet on the ground that uses his money well imo.

    • @veemacks7255
      @veemacks7255 8 років тому +2

      The 991.2 GT3 is certainly rumoured to offer manual. On the Salomondrin channel he said that he thinks it might hurt the inflated prices the R is currently holding onto. It seems that manufacturers these days are realising there's more demand for manuals than they thought. From 2004 to 2014 or so, it really looked like a manual gearbox was going to become a thing of the past, but in the last two years they've really made a comeback.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 8 років тому

      I definitely think that 911R prices will fall a little if the next gen GT3 is equipped with a stick, but probably will still be quite valuable. Hopefully they stick around (no pun intended) even if it is on low volume or specialty vehicles only. I honestly wouldnt know what to do with my left foot if there wasnt a clutch to depress.

    • @zxtenn
      @zxtenn 8 років тому

      I think that Porsche and other manufacturers are going by the performance numbers/increased performance in lap times that the PDK offers compared to a manual regardless of how skilled the driver is and seems to forget all will not see track duty and purists or those 'old school' owners find lots of fun with the manual not caring about the PDK and faster lap times it offersI feel BOTH should be offered

    • @onepunchtyler

      yes! But only a little bit just to give you some extra support

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 8 років тому

      On these newer Porsches, the rear wheels can articulate (I believe) up to 1-1.5 degrees in either direction. At low speeds, they angle opposite the front to give better response and keep the front end tucked into a corner (or if you are just parking, to help reduce the turning radius). At higher speeds, they turn with the front wheels to provide stability.

    I do wish Jay's show was a but more stylized. The web show is awesome and nerdy - love it the way it is, the tv show looks ancient in the way its shot, (a 'hair' better than autoweek) when we're all use to top gear as the benchmark now. Jay's tv version isnt as nerdy, glazes over details, made for a non technical audience.
    Top gear & Fifth gear are the last best looking/ cinematography car review TV shows, but at least we have Drive, CICGC, MotorTrend, Jay, Cnet on Cars, Evo mag, and a bunch of other web shows that elevate the standard.

    If you wanna do a video of a hot lap, don't overdub the sound over some other footage, I mean this isn't 1980s, can't pull this off anymore. It just looks unnatural and stupid. It's obviously slow. By all means get those shots and splice them together while Jay and Patrick are bantering, but don't put those ridiculous corner shots when Jay says "wow that's really on the edge" when you can see the cameraman shadow on he car. Seriously? Just mount a camera low, POV style, and do it that way, get some drone footage of the exterior, you'll be fine.
    Not trying to be douchy, just a heads up. We've watched Chris Harris and others for years and years, we can see clearly what's going on. This BS can get a pass for a morning TV show but not on a car channel on YT. Waste of everybody's time.

      Mazda also. Around 1989 was the Honda Accord and 1990 the Toyota Carina and Mazda 626. Nissan Skyline R32 GTR and Mitsubishi 3000GT had it also for the sportscars.

    Jay leno your a great man we love ya keep coming with those classics im no Porsche 911 Carrara man even though Mr.Porsche the guy who was the inventor of the Volkswagen beetle was also the eventor of the Porsche even though the engine to me seems to be a glorified Volkswagen but thats just me lol im more of a mopar type of guy as far as Dempsey goes Richard Petty would Stomp him in the Roadrunner superbird anyday yea he might have a edge even i will admit that the Porsche Cararra does have him beat as far as handling the curves but the straight highways Richard would win anyday

    A million bucks for a '73 Porsche? I know they made (make) great cars, but the prices for these things is way out of control. Even this amatuer says they're not safe. This is what happens when a bunch of rich guys decide they want one, and drive the prices through the roof.

      I owned a '74 base model 911 back in the 80s. It was a blast to drive and I drove the bag off of it on a regular basis. It was quick and it stuck like glue in most situations, although I did experience the heavy understeer more than a few times. I think I paid around $12k for it used and sold it for about the same amount a few years later. Lots of fun but I can't imagine a '73 RS being 80 times more fun for the money. In fact, price not withstanding, I'd rather have a new 911 any day. Comfort, safety, speed, handling. No comparison.

      OMGWTFLOL I was thinking the same thing. Pay $175k and have $700k left to invest. I just don't get the price jump over just the past few years. Especially when new cars are light years better.

      Fred Garvin It's more of a car collectors item than anything. You could probably have a Porsche 918 for weekends plus a 911 (or a house) for that lol.

      ags911 I feel that rich guys will latch onto another car manufacturer, and the price of these things will drop like a stone.

      No one who owns a GT3RS cares. Why? Because they own a GT3RS.
