    In this little video I'm showing how to add pedals to the Elektron Analog Keys, using the Softstep 2 foot pedals by Keith McMillen. Once you know what to do, you can set it up in no-time.

    Thanks, Cuckoo! Another thing you can do (especially for the Analog 4 since it doesn't already have a keyboard) is use a MIDI controller with the sustain pedal connected. It will send CC64 to performance knob F. All you have to do then is map F to the amp release and viola! Sustain using a normal sustain pedal. If your controller sends 0 and 64 (my Moog Sub 37 does this) instead of 0 and 127, you can you set the knob to bipolar, apply -127 to the depth, and then invert the pedal to get full release. I posted a bit more about this here www.elektronauts.com/topics/view/3444/

      Yeah good one. Definitely worth considering in a lot of situations. I've started to make extensive use of the performances though ;-)

      Me too. They're really good! Being able to change so many things at once is bonkers! If you don't have Perf F to spare your Softstep solution is best. If you do and already have a controller/sustain pedal it works great.

      @@JohnKeston i think you answered my question above? Unfortunately that Elektronauts page is gone, and with it the details. Is it only performance macro F or any of the macros? Is there a particular CC or NRPN that it responds to?

    Man, you cut your hair!!! WTH. Jk, but seriously dude your hair was looking awesome. How long was it before you cut it? Back tracking your older vids it looks like you were about 2 years in? Anyway, cool seeing more from you. Music is progressing so much. Love what I see on this channel.

      Thanks a million, mate!! Yeah, the hair went through a grinder.. I cut my hair like once a year or something :) economical cutting this time, he he. Time for a fresh start. But it sort of grows pretty fast. While at the hair dresser's I was thinking like "wooot, isn't that a tad too short?" But then she'd always started cutting so.. Meh. I like it short and fuzzy too :)

      cuckoomusic It looks good either way man. ;-) I was pretty inspired by that mane you were rocking in those collaborations with Dataline. Is music your main focus these days? Are you still animating anything? Ive been a fan of your work on vimeo for a while now. If you ever start making a new cartoon, you should aim a camera at the screen and just let us viewers watch and pick up the process second hand. I used to toy around with toon boom but never fully understood the workflow.

    thanks, first of all, for this tutorial, Cuckoo.
    Question: I can def feel the desire for some pedals. i think what I'd like, instead of replacing/duplicating the controls already offered by the aftertouch or even the joystick, is a CC to access one or more of the *performance macros* without having to use my hand (especially my right hand), without having to render those other physical controls (AT, mod, breath) redundant. I haven't found in the manual whether the 10 performance macros can respond to CC or NRPNs or whatever. I'm thinking it might be possible through the Overbridge plugin within Ableton, mapping the macro knob to the plug-in and then an external/foot controller like the one you're using here to the plugin? But that seems overly--complicated and worse necessitates the computer (which I don't want to have to bring along). But maybe there's a CC or NRPN that the footpedal can communicate to the macroknob through, more directly?
    Have you thought about this? Is it possible? Do you ever still use the AK or A4? Sorry hope this q is clear, not convoluted.
    thanks again!

    say you wanted to push on a key and affect 2 parameters. like i use pressure and it affects a filter and the pitch at the same time. is that possible or is it just one parameter per message?

      @@truecuckoo I spoke with a Keith McMillen rep yesterday. He said that you can do what I’m trying to do with the soft step but he said that the 12 step would be more suited for what I’m trying to do.
      Among other things, you can program up to five note chords, per button, and then those cords will correspond with the sound you have on whatever keyboard or synth you’re connecting it to. I’m going to buy a 12 step.

    Hello Man! First, happy new year!!! Awesome tutorial!!
    I've been thinking a lot about getting softstep2 , Ive worked with fcb1010 UnO a lot of time, but sometimes it¨s not enough... The thing is I got a midi guitar (tripleplay, kickass!!) and I'm playing some brass sections in my band, but I'd would like to control a few parameters in kontakt, there's where my old fcb1010 fails.
    My questions on softstep2 are:
    Can I send a PC and several CC's to one "key"... the thing is I need to change patch (PC) and inside the patch I want to control Volume (cc7) Expression, vibrato and god know what else comes to my mind!
    Maybe the navpad could help me with the expression stuff?
    I live in Chile, so I simple can't try this device I have to buy it blindfolded and I'm kinda deseperado!!!
    thanks in advance!

      Hey man, happy new year to you too! I don't have it here now, so I can't double check. But bou can download the editor from Keith McMillen and see what options you have. I think you can send a lot of messages from one key. Separate over USB Midi and expansion midi.

    Does it work only with the MIDI Expander or you can use it with other midi devices like Kenton MIDI Usb host?

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  9 років тому

      I still haven't used the Softstep 2 thoroughly enough to answer your question properly. I was using hosted mode because the editor had some options that were missing in standalone mode. Hosted mode only works through the app on the computer though. But once they're finished with developing K-Mix later this summer they will have time to implement it properly. I'll try to remind them again when they're done with K-Mix :) however it works fine without a computer if you don't need the extra functions. If suspect a Kenton could work, but I haven't tried it. I have one though, so I could try it in the end of July.

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  9 років тому

      It's not a full USB-midi host. This is a USB MIDI expander from Keith McMillen themselves, designed to work with many of their controllers.

    Hey cuckoo-- thanks for the demo.
    I've thought about getting a Softstep for similar use, but is there any way to send clock thru the Softstep, along with the midi cc?
    Obviously you could use a router or a merge box, but just curious if theres a way to do it using just the Softstep & expander. . . to me, there's not much use adding pedals if you have to sacrifice midi clock sync to get it.
    I didn't see anything in manual on this so I'd really value your insight & experience.
    Thanks again!

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  9 років тому

      monstrous lutes Hey there. By sending clock "thru the Softstep", do you mean the clock is coming from another source, passing it through the Softstep? The manual says that MIDI coming in is sent to the USB connection (but not through to the MIDI OUT. So I guess we're out of luck there.
      And I had a check into the manual and I don't think you can generate the clock from the within the Softstep. Nothing that I found anyways. Ask Keith McMillen directly. They're very friendly, and have all the top tech people to answer this correctly.

    • @dddccc14
      @dddccc14 9 років тому

      cuckoomusic Thanks a ton for the reply & your thoughts-- yes, I did check the manual too and wasn't looking to use it as a clock source. . . just hate having to use a merge box to get clock + some extra control to synths like this.
      Still, I don't think there's a better foot controller out there than Softstep 2. . .
      Thanks again.

    i guess it could work on the KMM 12 steps as well you reckon? I use to have a softstep1 and it was very tricky to use... to small buttons i needed to think about special shoes ;( may be the 12step is easier to use? did you see them side by side or tried both?

    • @truecuckoo

      +mamakuproject I haven't tried the 12-step. Can you prepare each trigger to do separate things, like on the softstep 2? I've got the impression that the 12-step is not as advanced as the Softstep. But I might be wrong. Be sure to read the feature specs before getting one.
