I haven't use this machine for ages but this video increased enormously my will to use this machine more as a sequential source. I deeply recommend this video for every user who is starting to get to known to the sequence programming with this machine. This is a pedagogigal masterpiece!
Wow thanks Cockoo! This tutorial was a real eye opener to me. Since time is always short, there is no time -at least I don't have- to spend hours with manual. And I have to say, videos work even better than written manual. This video sorted many things for me and I really appreciate this. Let me check that Patreon page now...
Marko Himanka Ooo, thanks Marko! That's great to hear! I agree, manuals tend to be heavy to read, and often with no connection to music at all. It's just a a list of stuff. This is partly why I want to help people get going with tutorials like this. You're very welcome to join my supporters at Patreon, if you feel like it. My biggest wish is to have many people supporting me with small amounts. I don't want it to be a burden to people to support me.
Hey mate, just wanted to say thank you so much for this tutorial. Im new to Elektron gear so coming to grips with my newly aquired Analog 4 has been difficult. In one day since starting working through your tutorial I have made huge leaps forward. Much appreciation- the way you communicate is fantastic!
Educational, plain and simple explained! Even I get it ;-) Thank you very much for you're great tutorial, it helps lot since I'm not really a manual diver....
I thank you very much for this tut. I just got the A4 and to me it’s a very different workflow machine than for example the Roland Airas. Because of your vid I now see how easy it’s to learn this machine.
Hi Andreas, this video helps me a lot to decide to choose the analog four for my setup i am building right know. christmastime was great and i get a very big present to step back into the music. thanx so far. hope we will met one time. ;)
One of the best tutorials you have done, makes sense and always delivered clearly ;) Thanks man well good. Would be an interesting part 2 to put this little song now into the octatrack fpr further production tips with Elektron. much appreciated :-)
Some useful tips in there! Thanks! I found Multi Mapping very helpful for playing drums. I divided the keyboard in two rhythm sections, so i can play more complex rhythms and record them on the fly using two tracks at the same time. As I find it a little bit tedious especially for live performance to dial in every drum sound with the big knob. Cheers
Hi Cuckoo, you're one of the very few Analog Four tutorials who really start at the fundamentals, thanks for that! One question, how do I loop my sequence?
I think what Arthur is trying to ask is how to do live recording looped. Press record and then play slightly after but at the same time. The record mode will start to blink. At that point it should record what you play into the loop.
***** If you ask me - yes. The keys is more fun. But that's because I'm playing keys. A lot of people who are making electronic music, don't know how to play keys - so for them the Four is a more natural choice. Because the programming aspect is the same. But deep down, you know wich one is for you ;-)
Really had a hard time to decide between the two. The final push into the Analog Four direction gave me the portability and the fact that I won't play any live stuff on the go. The fact that aftertouch and the joystick-movements aren't recorded anyway and me having a midikeyboard at the place I create stuff didn't justify the keyboard and the 400€ more to pay..
***** yeh the portability is a factor. i have an Octatrack and the A4 would sit so nicely next to it. i do like the four individual outputs on the Keys version, as i could route that into other gear.we shall see!
Thanks so much. Your videos inspired me to buy and explore the rytm and the analog keys. I already owned the sidstation. Any chance of a tutorial for that one day? Information is scarce!
Hey Cuckoo, thank you so much for this tutorial! you explain with as much calm, I love it. 2 Question i have: When i go from kit 1 to a second in the same Project and i change the sound in the second Kit in the same Track, the sound is also change in the first kit! I don't see in your video that you save the kits!? when i will play a different sound in different kits i have to save before i change the sound! Have you a idea? Do you now, how i can record the Transpose steps in a song? Thank you so much
really nice demonstration. Can anyone suggest a machine with very similar features? the interface and workflow, the way the LEDs on keys coordinate with the interface, song mode etc? Digitone keys doesnt seem to have these intuitive features, does it? is there an external keyboard that has the same interface features?
Hi Cuckoo. Thanks for all your tutorial videos! I wanted to ask you, what is the best way to link Analog Rytm and Analog Keys? I have both of them and you link to link them...cheers
Thank you for all the video, great Cuckoo! Could you possibly do a follow up to this video, showing how to sequence external midi gear, with the A4? they have added this capability, but it's not super easy to figure out. Grazie
Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I had firstly bought the A4 box a few years back and being keyboard player, even with an external controller, made it seem disconnected from my creative workflow that works for me. I *just* acquired an Analog Keys a month ago based upon your clear and concise and human-friendly tutorials. I still own the A4 box and it's lived in it's orig. box for a while of non-use. Now I plan to use the A4 primarily for drums alongside the AK, as to my ears and uses, the A4/AK sounds better than the newest Elektron Rtym. Thanks again and hope to see more A4/AK tutorials in future from you and Elektron should be giving you a commission. Peace, Always.
Cuckoo, I know you are the one man on YT to ask. (Bought a Rytm and Keys Thanx to you). Is there a way to have keys let the note be played from Ableton and have the trigs do other stuff. Like in rytm. Let the sequencer of the keys do all the funky stuff but have note input from live? Many thanx
A note-on coming from MIDI, I think, tries to override the pattern parameters at the moment it is played, but the (trigless) trigs on the pattern will immediately take over after the initial note-on. So if it's a long note, it will still be affected by the pattern trigs.
Thanks. Well.. I sort of prefer the Analog Keys, since it's so similar. Just a different layout, basically, and some added functionality with the joystick and multimap. I think the same techniques can be used on the Analog Four. But the Octatrack, yes. I've definitely been thinking about that! Just be patient, my friend. He he.
thank you for this. Have you got any (or will you do) video tutorials of how to play A4 paraphonically or polyphonically? I have the rytm and just added the A4 love having individual control of the voices via the sequencer but i wondered whether i can plug in a keyboard and play triads etc? Any idea.. been looking about on web - you seem to be clued up!
The Analog Four and Keys are more or less identical in functionality. There are more dedicated buttons on the Keys, so it's esier to do stuff without going into menus. On the Analog Four the poly settings are in the Kit menu.
This all make sense after I read the manual. The only thing i didn't quite catch while reading the manual are chains. What are they for? I understood chains as containers for patters, but what for? What's the best use for? Or chains just for experimenting purpose only?
Hi Cuckoo I wonder if you could answer a question. The Keys has 4 tracks a FX track and a CV track and all can be sequenced with parameter locks. With all this power within this synth’s sequencer why didn’t Elektron add midi out for the sequencer and how do you record you sequences in you DAW? Am I missing something I should know?
I play keyboards, I need something where I can do line of drums, bass line, line of accompaniment and solo line, and that I can vary the chords. I do not want something that is repeating over and over again the same chord, I want to make live songs with taste techno vincen clark :) analog keys, analog four...or digitakt? What is my machine? Thanks!
Hi Cuckoo, thanks for another nice instructional video, I wonder if you've tried to record in a live mode over several chained patterns - that would theoretically extend a possibility for a longer then 64 step sequences... do you think it's doable?
+Vlado Mudrak yeah it's doable. The only thing is that you need to prepare the patterns before you record. A pattern with no trigs is regarded as empty and 16 trigs long. So for the first round, put a trig somewhere in each pattern, where it doesn't matter, (cv channel, or fx channel?) to let the patterns stay long.
+cuckoomusic thank you a lot Cuckoo! Will i need to pre-select sounds beforehand for those tracks in chained patterns? I mean - If i'd play for example with a lead sound on a specific track and the patter'd change- will that lead sound remain there?
I'm currently debating between an Analog Keys or a Novation Peak. I know each are different and you can't compare the two really, but your videos are highly informative about the Analog Keys! You may well be the deciding factor between my next synth purchase. Just out of curiosity, I've tried googling this and haven't found an answer just yet, but, how many waveforms does the Analog Keys have? Does it have any built in wavetables (like the Virus Ti or Novation Peak)? Or is it literally the "basic" waveforms (saw, sine, tri, square etc)? Any info would be appreciated :) Thanks for the great videos!
+Samuel Round thanks mate. Yeah they're two sick different instruments. The Keys does not have wave tables. Only basic waveforms that can be messed with and filtered. I will make a new video with the Peak soon'ish. The last software update enhanced the FM greatly.
Thanks for the reply dude! That's a great help! I look forward to your next video! Out of interest, which synth between the two do you prefer, and why? Hard question I'm sure!
+Samuel Round I prefer the Keys. I both like the sound and the flexible and deep sequencer. The Peak is growing on me though. It has its sweet spots for sure.
cuckoomusic yeah, that's what I'm debating between. I already have a Virus TI2 Desktop and I'm selling a Virus Ti Keyboard to raise funds for either the Peak or Keys. The Peak had hands on control with lots of knobs which appeals, much like the Virus. The Peak strikes me as a better sounding (in terms of aliasing) synthesiser, with similarities to the Virus. Obviously the Virus has no Analog parts, but does a great job at emulating classic sounds. The Keys on the other hand will offer me something different that the Virus and Peak cannot offer me, with regards to the Keys powerful sequencer. The ability to change the parameters per step of the sequencer has me convinced that this is the synth for me if I already own a hands on synth such as a Virus. I also plan to start buying eurorack modular gear in the future, the Keys extra CV control over the Peak also appeals, as does using the sequencer to control the eurorack gear. I think I'll be getting a Keys. It's sound has a more appealing nature than that of the Peak, to my ears anyway! Keep up the good videos and thanks for your help! Ps. If you're after a Virus Ti Keyboard, let me know 😋👍
maybe a stupid question.. when playing a lead melody on a certain track..the sound is cut-off. You went into an expiation for the poly/rotate options for chords. But how can you play lead melody over a sequence without the pages cutting off the sound mid-way? Not sure if my question makes sense - I am new to this :x
If you plan it out a bit, the way you program the tracks, it might be a good idea to leave one track completely free. Then, when you're on that track, set it to mono, you'll know that you won't interrupt anything. Or when you play the lead melody on that track, you can mute whatever is on that track while you're playing, if it makes sense musically.
good stuff yet again. THANKS cuckoo. my only issue with electron's OS (and there is probably a good reason why they do it) is the concept of sound pools and having to move sounds around. This is supremely annoying with the Analog Rytm as well. Why isn't the entire memory storage structure available to a project without having to take the steps of sifting thru sounds and making decisions about which ones will be used in the project? But I guess we must get used to it.
Eric Davis Yeah, I think it's to ensure speedy playback, and make advanced functions possible. Everything in the pool is probably loaded into a RAM memory, which has got much faster access than the +drive. For straight up sample playback, streaming from the +drive would probably be fast enough. But when doing crazy stuff I have a feeling the RAM memory is much more flexible.
Hi CUCKOO and Guys... So I’ve got my first Elektron keys this week and loving it, but i cant get it to work with Logic X when i press record i get this droning sound and i cant record my own stuff into it? any help would be great, thanks, I’m now to this..
+Touched Music is this with Overbridge? Droning sound? Pleasantly droning or digitally static? When a computer is involved there are many things that can go wrong.. I'm recording all my things through an audio interface. I haven't really tried Overbridge yet.
hey @cuckoomusic i'm trying to deal with an issue on the Keys and wonder if you know a solution for it.... how to untie the octave shift from pattern change? When I change the octave range from the octave up/down buttons, the sequencer obviously saves it to the active pattern (and track). Now if I change to another pattern, the octave range will jump to the position I played in when the pattern was last active. If for example I have a chain of patterns playing and want to jam on one track using octave shift, the range will jump up and down once the chain loops. Do you know how to change this? cheers!
I feel you on this, mate. It's very unfortunate that it works this way. I have also been pretty upset about it. I don't think there's a setting for it, but I haven't searched for it in recent years. It's good when you want to prepare for playing a certain bass line, and then later in another pattern, prepare for playing some higher chords. Then the keyboard can be saved to always be in the right octave. But as you say, when you wanna improvise over several patterns (which is probably the majority of what many people will use the keys for anyways??) it ties the octave to the pattern, as you noticed.. Send a report to Elektron about stuff like this. They're listening to suggestions, even if they make the calls.
@@truecuckoo I see your point, the setting is convenient for planned playing. Other than that it is a bit difficult to understand contructively, feels like an exvitation to go wild :D It's good to know tho that you came to the same point, thanks for the answer. Ticket time!
Hmm... A wild and stupid idea could be to use the “midi ext” mode, and loop back the midi out into midi in. I don’t think the external midi mode saves the octave? Another even more stupid solution could be to use an external keyboard altogether and get an Analog Four...
@@truecuckoo maybe you are right and this will finally convince the ministry of finance to get me the mark 2! tho i would hesitate because a proper keyboard included in the box is a valuable thing to have... i will therefore think about the midi out and in again - thing, i like the idea! until then i will play basslines, leads or chords according to what the sequencer tells me to do :D
Sorry to bother, cuckoo. At 5:35, nothing happened when you pressed the play button(before you record any sound). But the thing is, weird music played when I pressed the play button on MY analog keys(which is NOT my recording), and i couldn't record any patterns. I bought it in Taiwan, Taipei. Does it happen to other analog keys? could i delete the music?
Hello, very good video, please keep em coming about Elektron Analog! I noticed you have sounds in every bank. Now, I have sounds only in a and b banks, I updated 1.12B Operating System. Is that normal?
Thanks Cuckoo, 9 year later. My second hand AK arrived this morning, and you've helped me understand the workflow and how it differs from my Digitakt.
Almost six years later and still a great tutorial. Cheers, Sir Cuckoo.
thank sequencer gods for this guy. within five minutes of watching this i understand way more than i did previous to those 5 minutes.
Hey circle! Here's a sequencer tutorial for the #analogkeys ( #analogfour ) by WeAre Elektron. Perhaps some will find it useful? :) Cheers.
Good also for owners of the Analog 4 methinks. :)
LEGEND....sitting here with the quick start guide and pdf reference manual for hours and have got further with five minutes of this video...Thank you!
Thanks mate! Then it's worth all the effort! I wish I could do more!
I have been referring to this video quite often. thank you! don't ever delete this video!
Wiped the dust off my old AK this is a great refresher to get going again with it. TY.
I haven't use this machine for ages but this video increased enormously my will to use this machine more as a sequential source. I deeply recommend this video for every user who is starting to get to known to the sequence programming with this machine. This is a pedagogigal masterpiece!
Your a great teacher. Workflow looks much better with the keyboard and the lights. Im think this week arrive a keys at my home.
The most useful tutorial on Analog 4 on the web. Thanks!
Thanks for making this vid. I watched it 10 times then finally got the analog keys. I love this machine.
Wow thanks Cockoo! This tutorial was a real eye opener to me. Since time is always short, there is no time -at least I don't have- to spend hours with manual. Hey mate, just wanted to say thank you so much for this tutorial. Im new to Elektron gear so coming to grips with my newly aquired Analog 4 has been difficult. In one day since starting working through your tutorial I have made huge leaps forward. Much appreciation- the way you communicate is fantastic!
this is what I needed for buy the marvelous analog four.
thank you so much Cuckoo!!!, greetings from Spain.
Cukkoo well done, this was a fantastic introduction for me, it really got me up and running very quickly. Thanks and all the best!
Mate if you're ever in the uk, drop me a line and we will have drinks, food, and smokes. Keep up the amazing work x
Thanks so much for making this video, I'm a new AK owner and it was a HUGE help. I supported you on Patreon- feel free to make more AK/A4 videos!
Educational, plain and simple explained! Even I get it ;-) Thank you very much for you're great tutorial, it helps lot since I'm not really a manual diver....
About bloody time someone did this! Think I love you!
Thanx a lot!
thanks for helping me with your videos ... always very clear and funny!
Thanks a lot for your tutorial videos Cuckoo. I just bought an A4 so your well explained tips will come in handy.
cuckoo you are a keyboard magician... soothing sounds!
I thank you very much for this tut. I just got the A4 and to me it’s a very different workflow machine than for example the Roland Airas. Because of your vid I now see how easy it’s to learn this machine.
Hi Andreas, this video helps me a lot to decide to choose the analog four for my setup i am building right know. christmastime was great and i get a very big present to step back into the music. thanx so far. hope we will met one time. ;)
Brilliant tutorial man! Had this machine three days and no idea - I loathe to turn to the manual :P
One of the best tutorials you have done, makes sense and always delivered clearly ;) Thanks man well good. Would be an interesting part 2 to put this little song now into the octatrack fpr further production tips with Elektron. much appreciated :-)
You are my hero Cuckoo!
Great tutorial Cuckoo, thanks!
Many thanks Cuckoo for the tutorial, very helpful. Will try this on my A4 sometime.
This really helped me get into operating the sequencer quickly. Thanks for making this :-)
Thanks for the vid. I keep coming back to it again and again for reference. Wish I could download it into my brain.
I don´t own an AK. But this tutorial is really professional. And this sequenced melody you created is amazing!
This is an amazing tutorial.
Thank you very much for this video / tutorial.
Helps a lot to understand the potential of this amazing machine.
God bless
Gaby
cheers very much mate!!....this tutorial made my music life more easier.
your voice is so calming and smart :)
really enjoyable mate

awesome video mr. Cuckoo!!! thx for that
Love this quirky tune, great sounds and rhythms +1
thx man made it a whole lot clearer!
revelatory for both keys and A4... and pleasant listening as well
You are a gentleman and a scholar:) Thanks a mil!!
Thanks! I learned loads.
Thats an awesome tutorial for the AK users like me. Thank you for this tutorial
Very informative, Thanks Cukoo :)
Hi Cuckoo, you're one of the very few Analog Four tutorials who really start at the fundamentals, thanks for that! One question, how do I loop my sequence?
If it doesn't loop, maybe you're in "song" mode. Just unselect it and it will loop automatically...
I think what Arthur is trying to ask is how to do live recording looped. Press record and then play slightly after but at the same time. The record mode will start to blink. At that point it should record what you play into the loop.

hello geez, great tutorial! please will you do one on the arpeggiator on the analogue keys?
thank you man! so helpfull!
At 46:52, I seriously stood up and looked out my window because I heard somebody! And then it freaked me out because you heard it too! Ha!
I love my Analog Keys ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks, man.
I hope in future you will make more tutorial about electron stuff :)
maN Œuvre, it clicks a bit, but it's also due to the placement of the mic. You should try it.
thnx for this video,
Thanks Cuckoo! The best tutorial around, save me months of headfucking
Cool! Great, this is why I keep doing these things!

maybe a stupid question.. when playing a lead melody on a certain track..the sound is cut-off.
Thank fuck for this tutorial!
you are amazing than you
Please add time/section jumps to your videos!
good stuff yet again.
I think you're probably right regarding p-locking and sample manipulation in real time. It's a lot of overhead. Thanks again!
The joystick has to get stuck upside and downside? Or it has to bounce like it does sideways?
We all store our sounds on AK on bank E :D
Sorry to bother, cuckoo. At 5:35, nothing happened when you pressed the play button(before you record any sound). But the thing is, weird music played when I pressed the play button on MY analog keys(which is NOT my recording), and i couldn't record any patterns. I bought it in Taiwan, Taipei. Does it happen to other analog keys? could i delete the music?
Hello, very good video, please keep em coming about Elektron Analog! I noticed you have sounds in every bank. Now, I have sounds only in a and b banks, I updated 1.12B Operating System. Is that normal?
Gizmoriderful Ye Thanks! I've saved my own sounds in banks C, D, E.. The stock presets are in bank A and B. You can copy and save patches as you wish.
can you load samples onto this?
Just one question: I keep getting the wrong sounds in my patterns how do I make sure that the sounds I use get saved with the patterns?
markus zovic kits, sounds and patterns are all different and contain different data, learn them. Manual covers all the details you need , good luck.
