Kurt was a very troubled soul, and honestly did feel that way about himself. He had bipolar disorder (manic depression), and this is basically his song about it - lithium is used to treat the disorder. Another one who checked out before his time. The nearest you'll get to see Nirvana now is Foo Fighters, who are excellent in their own right.
So so grateful I got to see them live 6 times including their famous 1992 Reading Festival performance. They were just so mental live. I remember being on stage with them very briefly before stage diving when they played in Bristol, England too. And I always thought I was jealous of my Mum and her generation growing up with the Beatles and the Stones, but now I get to enjoy my kids reactions to who I got to go see live. Thankfully they love music too and they’ve come with me to some awesome concerts too. But hey get yourself to new artists. There are so many great new artists that could do with your support too and they just might be the next Nirvana. If you want great live bands, Foals and the OSees are currently fantastic bands to go see.
Lithium used to be the go to drug for bipolar disorder, or manic depression as it used to be called. So the mental break/contradictionary statements in the song have always reflected that to me.
My favorite Nirvana song. Isn’t it wild to see David Grohl (now Foo Fighters) doing the drums? He looks so young. I guess because he was. His band is insanely more popular. Foo Fighters have been around now for over 30 years, and still super relevant.
Kurt died when I was 11, and it broke my heart because they were my favorite band at the time. But the wonderful thing that came out of that tragedy is that drummer Dave Grohl went on to form the Foo Fighters, and their shows are legendary too. And when this pandemic is over, if they come to L.A., go see them live. They will blow your mind. :)
Im 44 and missed nirvana live i miss kurt all the time i imagine him now being alive and just doing lo fi folk, blues stuff. I read about his death in the paper on my paper route and man i had to stop!
i'm 52 years old. i was in my early 20's when Nirvana got big. Huge in fact. I was newly married and money was tight so couldnt afford to see them in concert (but no regrets as myself and my wife come up to our 31st anniversary). I love all kinds of music from classical to rap. But this is, for me, THE most powerful song ever recorded. It fires me up, makes me think, makes me feel alive!! The only way i can come close to describing it is it's like a tuning fork for my soul and makes it resonate in unison.
Nirvana was my favourite band as a teen in the 90s, I lived for them and had one wall of my bedroom dedicated to posters of kurt lol! I haven't listened to this song in a while, but hearing it now brings me right back to that time in a way that sends goosebumps down my arm. It's interesting that you say the song feels like it's about someone breaking down but trying to keep it together, because that's what I felt for the majority of my teen years, Nirvana helped with that, it was an outlet for all the rage, pain and angst listening to those songs. Love you and your reactions by the way! xo
Hello and Happy New Year! I'm new here, but I love your reactions! The word yeah never sounded so good (except maybe during "She Loves You" by The Beatles)! I'm a huge fan of Nirvana. This takes me back to when I was in high school and these guys were the big rock band of the day. I remember watching this concert on MTV's Live & Loud on New Year's Eve 1993 just before midnight turned into '94...it was so exciting and exhilarating! To me, the best songs in history are the ones that stick to your memory instantly and leave an opening for interpretation, so you can get your own meaning from it!
There were almost three Foo Fighters on that stage. Krist seriously considered joining Dave's "solo" project after Nirvana. As it is, it's only Dave and Pat that are Foo Fighters but the three have all played together since this. Interestingly, on the odd occasion that Dave plays a Nirvana song since the sad passing of Kurt he will only do it if Krist and Pat are both playing with him and he will NEVER sing himself, it's only ever a guest vocalist. RIP Kurt, you beautiful soul.
The sheer relief when this music broke big still echoes in my mind. Up until then it felt you had to be happy and successful, no matter what. Kurt found a way to express the other side of it that made you throw yourself around the room. I suppose it's not for nothing that he identified their music as essentially 'The Beatles playing Black Sabbath'. And then, just when you thought he could capitalize on it, he went away...

I was fortunate enough that my sister took me to see Nirvana when I was a freshman in hs and they were as amazing as you think live. The energy in that place was phenomenal. 26 years later and I can still remember exactly how that feels. When the world starts up again, I hope you do go to a concert. Amazing experiences.
Kurt Cobain was the voice of our generation (X). He was uncomfortable with the burden. He said so brilliantly how invisible and lost we were. His death was a loss on so many levels. It exemplifies the struggles we dealt with in that time. Drugs, lack of parental caring, Aids, the threat of nuclear annihilation. We were angry and Nirvana came along and was the fuse that changed music. I miss his voice and always wonder what he would have become if he had lived.
Oh no...this is from the Live and Loud concert for New Years Eve... you need to buy this DVD and this has to be on a LARGE screen and LOUD love. Or buy "Live Tonight Sold Out" if you want to experience more of the band.

Let's point out Pat Smear here (the second guitarist with the red pants) Pat came into the public view thanks to the LA Punk band the Germs, who released an album which became an underground classic but never really got anywhere. The Band ended when lead singer Darby Crash took his own life. Pat had been down on his luck, working at a record store on LA and basically having no pot to piss in. Until one day Kurt Cobain walked into that said store and went "Hey wait a minute, aren't you Pat Smear from the Germs?" They struck a conversation and Kurt basically told him "If you need a job, I can give you one, join my band!" So Pat, having no cash, pawned his guitars to buy a plane ticket to fly to Seattle, Kurt Picked him up and pushed two things into his hands: a credit card and a guitar. Bass player Krist Novoselic and Drummer Dave Grohl took to Pat straight away as he brought back the fun of being in the band. Look up the interviews from that time period, everybody was always laughing, including Kurt. And after the Band ended, Pat joined the Foo Fighters and stayed there. The story of Pat Smear shows a side of Kurt Cobain, nobody mentions: he would help people out when they needed it.
The worst thing to happen to Kurt was they got big and famous. His mentality was that he wanted people to like him for his music, and not to treat him like a rock star God.
tbh you got your interpretation pretty spot on to what the song is about. The song is basically addressing Kurt's bipolar disorder, he used a range of contradictory sentences to elaborate this. The song is called "Lithium" as Kurt was prescribed Lithium tablets as a way of dealing with bipolar
I've read, watched, heard, studied most of what is possible too and never have i came across a article, interview, etc that kurt was prescribed lithium... this song is about basic rejection... as kurt put it, someone that looses everything and turns to god before committing suicide... except kurt did not say anything about the suicide part, that's just my opinion about the suicide part 🤣🤣 but cheers, maybe i've just haven't come across that information yet about him taking lithium!
