Viewers request - how to play the wonderful "Voodoo Ray" by A Guy Called Gerald, classic hit song from the heyday of House music in the late '80s - NOTE: I'm using THIS version as reference here: • Video
Apologies - I rendered the audio in this video at 8-bit by mistake. Will post a better version with full resolution soon
I kind of like the bitcrush effect. And it's probably authentically 80s for some of the samples or synths.
Are you still going to post a 16-bit version?? Thanks! 😊
Drived my parents mad with this track. I finally stopped playing it when my dad appeared at my bedroom door dad-dancing. Killed it for me.
dads like eckies too ...
your dad is a genius :)
Your dad CJ 🤣.
I'm 55 years old, what is dad-dancing? 😀🤣😭
My daughter shames my dancing also.

I think it said "Voodoo Ray" rather than "Rage" was because he had no memory left in the sampler. More of a happy accident than by design. Think I've read that somewhere.
Right. I remember seeing an interview with him where he said that it was truncated because his sampler ran out of memory.
@@mitchelldunaway Those were the days. Out of memory after one second of audio.
i remember me and my mate going to A1 music in Manchester (under the arches) to buy an Akai S950 mono sampler (we couldn`t afford the stereo S1000) ..we paid £1500 cash and got about 5-6 seconds of mono sampling !! happy dayz tho esp round manchester at the time ...
@@2000stephenellis Think A1 was where Reni answered the advert to join the Roses.
@@grizcuz Yeah i can believe it .. it was not unusual to stand next to Johnny Marr .. Mick Hucknall or Gerald himself or the 808 State lads back then and maybe a young Noel G ? .. the shop was always buzzing esp on a Saturday when we used to go !! happy times ... now sadly a wine bar i think :-( ..
Nailed it. Amazing recreation. Totally got the crucial parts and feel. Thanks for this!
Awesome! Thank you!
Vocal Samples are from the track BO DUDDLEY by Derek & Clive, aka Peter Cook & Dudley Moore
Didn't know it was Derick and Clive!!
ua-cam.com/video/Vj3U1DQurew/v-deo.html&feature=emb_title it's on this live version 7:09 and 7:33
And as great as this track is Gerald Simpson has never been paid a penny in royalties which is a very nasty payback after creating one of the most iconic tracks us Mancs loved it for
Being a Manc, this tune holds a special place in my heart. You did a fine job especially the 101 sound
Quel est signifiqe du manc??

A guy called Gerald who produced this track is from Manchester 👍
@@paulk3150 ah, I was born late 80s. I am amazed by some of the old synth tracks. Love this one. Good to know he was from Manchester.
What a track ! Happy days when this was out esp round Manchester at the time ....
Released and promoted by a Merseyside label....you're welcome our kid.
I like this "how to" very much and Gerald Simpson is really great .I begging you Paolo to recreate PACIFIC STATE on of my all-time favorite track of my childhood from the early 90's (it's a 808 state and Gerald track)
Mine too- it's on the to-do list for sure :D
Point Blank Music School already did reconstruction of "Pacific State": ua-cam.com/video/pKAst6LQCrs/v-deo.html
@@SynthManiaDotCom Can you add LFO - LFO to that please sir?
And I see they used my video in it. Not that it's a big deal, but it would have been nice of them to mention my channel, no? ua-cam.com/video/nAV9il4ewFA/v-deo.html
For sure. That's another classic track of my youth - I used to play LFO at high volume in my car going to the parties back in the days :-D
let see what Gerald Thinks of this ,ill show him
What did Gerald think?
And of course, a young lady singing 'Hey ahhhhh ahhhh yeah' over the top of it :-)
Other than that . . . you seem to have nailed it 100% - Nice work!
????? I think you misunderstood me - I was not talking about you singing.
I was talking about . . . the only thing the song now lacks is a lady singing the high vocals.
My comment was only intended as a compliment.
Sorry if I was not clear.
@@SynthManiaDotCom You made my day!
No worries- but I think you misunderstood me. There was no need for you to point out something like that, because it is obvious that it's missing the female vox and other components. It's what on the Internet they call a "Captain Obvious" statement. Hence I poked a little fun at your comment. Do you understand now? www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Captain%20Obvious
SynthMania i don’t think he was criticising, i think he was just saying with the vocal it would sound like the original. i’d take that as a compliment
I don't think he was criticizing either, boxy. I clearly stated what I think he was doing: I think he posted a captain obvious statement.
Damn that SH-101 is CLEAN! Are you transmitting from 1982? Looks like you just took it out of the box!
exnihilo415 - Same with the 303 & 808 😬
Just run them under the tap for a few minutes. Cleans them right up every time.
Yes does the job ... 707 flavor with I recall doing. thank you ...had a blue one .sh..miss it😎
I was at the New Order G-Mex concert in December 1988 the first time I heard Voodoo Ray. Mike Pickering DJing. The one and only time I've heard a crowd react to a record played by a DJ at a gig like it was the main act playing on stage, the entire place erupted.
I remember the same thing happening when the DJ dropped Deeply Dippy at a Cure gig.
@@danpreston564 What did you expect from ridiculous goths paying good money to see Fat Bob moaning on in his fright wig? Doesn't surprise me in the slightest.
grizcuz he was just 'slightly tubby' Bob in those days.

@@GNeuman yes because it's about that genuine quality, genuine equiment. It's more than just making sound, it's about honouring legacy. To genuine collectors and those that can do so with recreating music like this I certainly applaud.
It's like car restoration for music.
@@nostalgiaof98fair point👍👍👍
Hearing this recreated so accurately just highlights to me how important the vocal hook is to this song. Always dug the acid sound, but having that human touch from the vocal line just brings everything together and brings the track to life. Excellent work by the way!

When that beat kicked in, I was immediately back in the nightclub in '89. Good job, by the way.
Great! What a classic track!

Best days dancing in house clubs in D.C..... Club Red
So do you step in the pitches of the sh101 sequencer, but step in the rhythm on the tr808? So the tr808 triggers the notes of the SH101, but plays the rhythm of the tr808 step sequence?
Timeless tune with a flawless rendition.

I think the woman’s vocal on this makes the whole track. Great reproduction of the main elements though!
I have found about this song via Gta Sa while being in a club. Idk if it was a popular track in the 90's or whatever year.
Such a great track, uncanny version! Sounds exactly like that!
Could you show the 303 pattern please? I'm trying to program it on the tb03 but cant quite replicate the spacing properly? Many thanks.

I had all these synths and more, produced as SleepyC, Stephen Cinch, Serotonin Project, 2DJ's and many more names. I sold most of my keyboards and drum machines for $100 or less back in the late 90's. It's killing me to see the prices now. At one time I had (6) 303's and (4) 101's... and multiple 909's, 808's all of it.. I feel sick.. I wish I could go back.
Hey Paulo hope you’re keeping safe mate. Would you be so kind as to share the pattern for the 101?I have the 303 and 808 patterns already. Cheers
shame you couldnt get the soul singer nicola(i think her name was) to do the vocals over the phone on loud speaker!

NICE! My SH-01a is arriving in a week and I'm going to totally do this.

@@SynthManiaDotCom As a side note i live about 40km away from Manchester England and at the time the "scene" was buzzing... with dance acts starting to chart here in the U.K. i.e. 808 state (of which Gerald was a part of at one time) .. i remember going with my friend to A1 Music store in Manchester to purchase an Akai S950 sampler (we couldn`t afford the stereo S1000!).. we paid £1500 for about 5-6 seconds worth of sample time (at the highest Hz) ... back then it was not unusual to rub shoulders with Gerald himself or the 808 State crew or even Johnny Marr of the Smiths it seemed like no matter who you were at A1 you left your ego at the door ... Very happy days indeed !! the shop was stacked (and i mean STACKED!!) with vintage traded in synths etc..if you were lucky you could grab a bargain .bearing in mind dance / electronic stuff was just coming to the forefront of music having had it`s 80`s heyday .. so i paid £50 for a 303 ... £100 for a SH101 and £100 for a pro one .. all sadly sold on afterwards of course for massive prophets (see what i did there?) because i need the cash back then.. but i`ve managed to mostly re-buy them back.. as i became a financially secure middle aged man ...
Hehe, yup, same here, exactly same experience in Italy at the time. Got a used W-30 because I couldn't afford the S1000. Plenty of mom & pop stores with (now) vintage synths, see the popular DJs at records stores in Rome, rave party every weekend. All that of course doesn't exist anymore, especially the musical instruments stores, unfortunately...

Very, very well done.
The female 'oooo' vocals were done by session singer Nicola Collier. She sang something and the sound was reversed back on itself, apparently.

wow, this is close!
Not necessarily my preferred genre from that era but still really well done Paolo! Very interesting!!

Yeah the song should of been called voodoo rage but he didn't have enough memory so it became Ray
No. This is a minimum level effort, by reciting Wikipedia and not doing any extra work to research. They actually didn't know how to use the samplers (which had plenty of memory to catch the whole word) but they liked the effect and left it. ---> "He found this vocal sample from a Pete and Dud record that said “Voodoo Rage,” which sounded pretty cool so we sampled that up. We had two samplers, and neither me nor Lee the engineer really knew how the bloody things worked. Lee chopped off the end of “rage” by mistake, and it became “Voodoo Ray.” We thought: actually, that sounds even cooler. The whole record is a series of experiments. You know: “Ooh, how does that work?” - source: daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2017/02/guy-called-gerald-voodoo-ray-feature
