    I felt nostalgic tonight and fired up the trusty old W-30... for the younger viewers, here's a breakdown of how a typical Techno / Rave piece of the early '90s would have come to light. Riffs all played live as we used to do at rave parties. Questions are welcome, this is the sound of my youth and I love making this music and talking about the gear and techniques of the day.

      VSTs are just soooo 5 years ago now ...... which is great cos now I have all hardware again due to the abundance of hands on Synths released these days ! ............ the Kontakt vst remains important though especially for Orchestral and acoustic style stuff

    I was already in the synth scene in school in 1983, a friend was making music like this at home BUT THIS takes me straight back to the early 90's, trippn' dancn' and leaving as the sun rises..... ears ringing and still buzzing... The breakdowns ... took me straight to the dance floor ... keep it up , so appreciated.... music is hardly made like this anymore!!!

    Jesus Christ! What amazing sound, rhythm and melodies! 1980-1996 was truly the golden age of music - dance, in particular! I can compare this to any era in time and nothing even comes close to making you feel this much adrenaline shooting throughout your whole body! Don't confuse nostalgia with a good ear, man! I KNOW this stuff is awesome and still way ahead of even THIS cringy new era we have to endure!

      I went to raves through the late 90s and experienced the power of the music through huge speakers that were much bigger than me, and you could feel vibrations through your body based on where you stood in the warehouse. This music would have made everybody go crazy and the repetition only putting us more and more in the trance state even without being on any substances. Timeless dancing all throughout the night and leaving in the morning in broad daylight blinking feeling great, and looking at the appearance of a new day. And then driving to a friends house so we could all crash and wake up whenever.

    Always wondered how they produced those crazy jungle bangers. A lot but not all used trackers or computers to sequence. The trackers probably allowed them to do some crazier sample tricks at the expense of lower bit depth and sample rate. What I always pondered about is how much of a pain in the ass it must have been to get a good breakbeat chop.
    You have to synchronize the tempo of the break sample you have by calculating the amount of pitch to apply, and then slicing the breaks up into equal pieces and applying the pitch changes to that to so you didn't have any clicks from the sample gaps. If you wanted to change the project's tempo you'd probably have to reapply and recalculate the pitch again. I believe a lot of it was software assisted if you had the Amiga for instance. There were probably tools for that. But if you had to do that sort of editing purely on a sampler, holy crap. I think there were some people that did lazy hacks with chopping by just transposing the break to approximate the tempo and only selectively cut out the part you wanted to chop. But that wouldn't fly with some of the more crazier jungle stuff.
    All that stuff with no automated tempo synchronization. (At least not to my knowledge)
    I'd actually like to see SynthMania attempt to try making some jungle-esque improvised music.

    • @SynthManiaDotCom
      @SynthManiaDotCom  9 років тому +3

      +sticksquash Hehe.... yes, kids have it easy today. Yeah, Jungle was all samplers, Akai, Roland, etc., chopping done by ear. While I listened to it, I never really got into making it. A bit later there was the ReCycle software that made it easier, which I bought at the time but seldom used it (I should rediscover that, now that you mention it). Trackers came later

I was googling some info on how to make electronic music because I got a bunch of analogue gear and it seems nobody uses hardware to perform anymore. I'm good with my video game music and my 90s rave music thanks! My 2 analogue synths and my Emu Proteus 2000 can do great music just fine with a drum machine or two and a sequencer. Laptops just crash and kill the vibe.
