- I discuss and do some shooting with the FN 509 9mm pistol which was submitted to the Army's MHS program along with the Glock 19X and P320 which eventually became the Army's new service pistol. While the pistol takes it's lineage from the FNS 9 it's certainly a much improved version in many ways.

I'm with you on the triggers. I stopped measuring pull weight in my videos because really weight isn't as important as travel/feel to me.

I have both the 509 and the G45.
Although I really do like the 509 I have had 1 FTF when gun was dirty and 2 FTE with a total round count on 509 of about 1500 rounds.
The 509 has weak extraction In my opinion. My G45 has 3500-4000 rounds thru it without any issues whatsoever.
I tend to carry and trust the G45.
3 Failures in 1500 rounds with Federal factory ammo is a problem to me for an EDC gun.
The G45 is my go to EDC pistol for the past year!
Never have any issues with any of my Glocks.
And I am really not a Glock fan at all But I just cannot deny their reliability

I love my 509, been carrying it for a few months now. I bought an FNS 9 as a gift for my father and found that the 509 mags do work in the FNS but not vice versa.

You have to change the baseplates out from the fns and then install the 509 baseplates . The baseplates are 10 bucks maybe less

I'm seriously in love with this firearm, and have been since I got my hands on it for the first time. There are lots of great options out there right now, but this one just feels right in my hand. I'm thinking it needs to home with me.

The mag release is a deal breaker for me.Great review like always.
This item showed up in the shop and I was thoroughly surprised. It is much more ergonomic and better looking than appears so online. One of those things that you kind of have to see in person. It also is much slimmer than I had assumed.
Enjoyed your presentation. The FN 509 fits my hand perfectly and for me the grip texture is less than the FNX 40. I have more felt recoil on my Ruger LC9s than on the 509. It's a great shooter.

M&P, the most overhyped GARBAGE since the last version of the M&P... Buy a CZ P-07, better gun, lower price, doesn't need a complete trigger replacement just to be mediocre.

Hickok 45 liked this weapon so much that he did 2 videos of it and bought one for himself. I've fired over 1500 flawless rounds.. I've only had one problem. One of the defensive rounds I use is Lehigh Extreme Defense. For some reason if I want to take apart the weapon I'm unable to eject the chambered round. This is the only round I have this problem with. I solved it by making sure the first round in the magazine is either the Liberty Civil Defense or the all new Hydrashok Deep. I'm guessing it's the unusual design of the Extreme Defense round that gives me this problem. Apex announced that a trigger for this weapon is coming out sometime this summer. If the reviews are favorable I'm probably going to go for it. But I'm not in a hurry. I plan on getting new sights as well, but luckily the color on my front sight is still in tact..lol. Gr8 vid as usual. Laters. 🔫
IMO the FN is going to trail the pack due to cost, aftermarket support, and some kinks in the durability, namely the firing pin. definitely the best looking
I have the FN 509 mid size and have over 4000 rounds through it with no problems at all . Not one problem love this gun.
I’m definitely getting one of these. The only FN I have is the FN Vest Pocket from 1911~. It’s an old German police issue/marked gun. FN makes good stuff. Thanks for the video.
I mirror your opinion on the trigger. The talk around the shop was how it was awful for its weight. I like that everything happens in a short amount of travel.

I have this firearm as well as the midsize & Tactical versions. Midsize is my EDC. Love this line up of firearms especially being a lefty. The triggers improve over time and usage. There is a single mag release available for those who don’t want it ambidextrous. Best overall outta the box firearm in my opinion. Great video
I just bought one today with part of that sweet stimulus money. I've considered buying one for some time now because I own a FN M4 so I know the quality that goes into them.

Love the trigger reset and break are very crisp. Yes crisp auable trigger prefered over light trigger
I used to think xd's and Glocks was the best until I bought one of the 509s.. Seems like all around better shooter... Very accurate and fast

I really love this gun, my gripe with the trigger is that the reset feels sluggish. Almost like the return spring is too weak, other than that I love shooting this and carrying it. Hopefully FN will release a stronger return spring.
Yeah. I just bought the Apex trigger for it and I just ordered some new customs springs to lesson the pressure pull as well. I will say the trigger is one of the best purchases I've made. For me the FN 509 was a 8.5/10 when I bought it. With the new trigger. Its a 9.5. Near perfect.

I honestly think if FN cut the grip down by 1/2 an inch, it would be real competition for the G19. It would be an awesome all-around pistol. It would certainly look better IMO. As configured, the 509 is a full-sized duty pistol with a short barrel.
F n 509, 510 and 545 are the only pistols i actually prefere to my glocks . Better grip texture, better triggers. The certaily cost more but they are fantastic pistols.

I wasn't fond of the FNS when I shot it, but I really like the 509. I think the felt recoil is snappier on the 509 than other guns because the recoil spring is around 21lbs

Big fan of the fn pistols. I have a fnx 9 and keep going back to it cause it has so many features i like.
But with the 2.0 you can have both 4" with a 15 rd or make it the same like the FNS. All you have do is buy the 17rd mags because the m2.0 comes with 2 extensions so you could also run it like the 19x and the FNS, ya get both for the price of the same gun.
I threw Xray3 sights on mine! My favorite all condition sights to date. Big dot front and black back during the day... and large glow in the front and small precise glow on the back at night.
Jonathan Moore So what’s your point of aim with the X-ray sights on there? Did it change compared to the factory sights? I’ve been looking at the Sig X-Ray #8’s cause I know they’ll fit on the 509
Great review. I had a chance to meet an engineer from FN a short time ago. Our discussion eventually got to the 509. Now i own an fns 40 and an fns 9c. Excellent firearms to say the least. I commented about the similarities the internals of the 9c and the 509 share. He stated the the 509 was born from the design of the 9c not the fns 9. Just wanted to pass that along. That said, I always enjoy your videos.

I just did for my first love it
My experience was that it shot high and to the left, but basically shot the same hole group-wise. My thought was that it does not shoot to point of aim.
That's what adjustable sights are for.

You should do a video or 2 about AR-10s such as profiles, what is reliable, what to know before attempting a build, solutions to problems, gimmicks, meme builds, and so on. Only because you have reviewed more Ar10s than anyone.
I dig ambi mag release. I have no problem as you atate. Put them on the triggerguard as the paddels now those are super cool. Hk and walther use them on some of their models
I loved my FNS9. It was a brilliant piece of machinery that operated without flaw. The problem I had is one that wouldn’t show up for Mr. GnG, if you have M or smaller hands there is no point buying the gun. That grip is fat and it’s a hell of a long reach to the trigger. I picked up a 509 when they first came out but the “slimming” features, like the horizontal thumb groove, are cosmetic only; the 509 is still problematic for us smaller guys. Such a bummer.
Is it true that shoot low left? I wanted to buy it, but read a forum of a lot of people complaining about the sights and low left. Any advice?

Shorter slide & full size grip - ala the G19X. I haven't heard anyone complaining about the FN 509's dimensions, but everyone and their cousin is whining about the G19X.

David Giles It isn't really as much whining about the G19X as it is mocking the Glockists that claim they're innovative...
FN is probably the best overall gun maker in the world, or tied with Beretta, for experience and offerings. Hard to go "wrong" with an FN. They make a big variety of high quality firearms from pistols, shotguns, machine guns, barrels, rifles, etc... I really like their FNS, FNX, and 509 pistols, their (discontinued) SLP shotguns, and their barrels are legendary....

However, after watching numerous videos as well as holding the pistol at my local gun shop recently, I truly found that this pistol ( FN 509 )HAS NOTHING over the RUGER American 9mm ....It is a BEAST- extremely well made !! Therefore, I purchased one. Needless to say that my Ruger American 9mm cost me $300. I don't think I can justify nor do I feel like I sacrificed anything ,... I mean anything ... in buying the Ruger!

I bought the ruger american. 45 and I love it but I also have the fn 509 tactical and I love them both so much!

10:50 ROFLMAO! That was hilarious. I sold my FNS9 to buy a 509. I liked the 509 but the magazine release sucked. Even with my hand out of the way the left side mag release was hard to actuate to get the mag to drop. I wish I hadn't sold my FNS9 as a like it more. I just wish the FNS9 had those 509 sights. I love that large rear sight ledge for one handed manipulations. If you go to sell that stainless FNS9 I'd be interested. I live in the Piedmont Triad area of NC.
Call me a heretic, but I think that g19x was the best of the military fails. I like it better than the sig, too.
That 509 seemed like a good option for the price.
Preference: Hammer or Striker for EDC?

Bert Shackleford I’ve been carrying a CZ 75B hammer fired model for quite awhile & love it. I can go either way though & I go back & forth between the two sometimes. They each will have their own advantages. Striker fired will only have one trigger pull, making it easier for some to master shooting. Hammer fired usually have a better single action trigger pull but, shooting that first shot in double action can be hard for newer shooters to master.
For me, a 1911. Hammer.
Mr FNH & Friends FNH I always find it hilarious how they bring up "same trigger pull every time" like do they think hammer guns have to be carried unloaded too. 😆
iDeagles Haha. I know but, having the two different trigger pulls seems to confuse the crap out of some newer shooters since they have to learn two trigger pulls instead of one consistent pull. I’ve had people try to explain what they thought DA/SA was & were way the hell off. I remember sucking quite badly when I was a noob back in the day with striker fired guns. Now, I would rather carry a hammer fired pistol with the hammer decocked in double action. I feel the long double action pull gives me the same comfort that a safety does for others. In the end, it all comes down to practicing with your particular firearm, having a good holster that covers the trigger guard while utilizing proper trigger finger control & discipline. You can’t buy experience when it comes to shooting. Especially when you’re first starting out.
I prefer my m&p shield 9mm with trigger job for edc. I don’t notice it when its on.

I am more of a rifle guy , and never owned a pistol and I justed put the 19x on layaway. I liked the look and the way it felt in my hand but I will find out for next week.

So you never stated if the 509 is better than a Glock or M&P. I’m looking to buy into a 9mm platform/family but it must be optics ready, g19 sized, decent night sights, quality parts that don’t need replacing immediately, and have parts available for repair as needed.
I like the new 509 Compact, but know optic. The Tactical is really nice, but to big for carry.
So I’m torn between the FN 509, CZ P-series, M&P 2.0, or Glocks ( which I really don’t care for)
What do you think of STIs 2011 tactical guns? They feel amazing to shoot, but how good for home defense as opposed to just ruling competition shooting?
I'm currently shopping for my first gun. I'm interested in the Fn 509 and the M&P 2.0 compact, between the two, which one would you recommend for a first time gun owner?

It`s a combination between a Clock and a Heckler & Koch.
Looks cool, reliable and affordable and is from Turky.
i'd agree with some other comments, i have pistols with so-called heavier triggers like the XDS, but it doesn't effect accuracy, comes down to feel and whether you train with it. good vid, think about adding to the shopping list :-)

Chamber probably wasn't cut deep enough for the minuteman ammo. Easy to check by taking the barrel out and dropping a round in the chamber.
rlovell383 That seems unlikely since it runs the 124gr version of the same ammo but who knows.

It's a very nice consistent crisp trigger - to me the 320 had a spongy trigger to it.

Here's a question for ya'll. Looking at the direction the country is moving, why are you unsatisfied with that picture? In the future, the only people with guns will be right of center gun enthusiasts and thugs. And then the military, which is primarily composed of people from those two groups as well. If it reaches a point where some demographics are armed, and other demographics completely disarmed, your individual power and influence will be maximized.
