FN 509 VS Glock G19 in a Defensive Battle
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 лип 2024
- The Glock 19 Gen 5 is a great pistol, that’s one of the reasons it was a top seller in 2020. The FN 509 is also an excellent polymer-framed handgun manufactured by one of the premier companies in this industry, FN Herstal. While the Glock 19 is a standard go-to for self-defense pistols the 509 is often overlooked. To find out why, we compared the two for concealed carry and personal defense.

Thank you for your honesty. My husband and I are considering purchasing the FN 509, for a defensive pistol for camping.
Thank you again.
Great detail video. Please keep them coming.
thx for trying to keep it honest, I like that you mention it some things differ from person to person.
I wanted to buy a fn509 but saw many people complaining about the trigger. Your video took away the fear of that for me and made my decision easier.
Bought the FN 509 compact MRD FDE. I shot it using only iron sights for approximately 2 months, then I put a Trijicon RMR Type 2 on it with 3.25 MOA. Both setups are amazing, and both were amazingly accurate. The FN 509 compact is my new everyday carry.
How’s the trigger on it?
@@methodman6725 I wasn’t amused at first, it was sort of gritty. But after several hundred rounds have been cycled through it, it has really smoothed out and feels really nice now. It’s obviously not as crisp as something like a top tier AR15 trigger, but it has a nice clean break and nice audible reset.
Hitchcock 45 said the FN509 feels like what you would expect a Glock to feel like.
“‘What is my relationship with FN, what is my relationship with Glock?’ I don’t have one, they won’t return my phone calls”
This guy Chase Welch has some of the best handgun assessments and reviews. Knowledgeable and well articulated, he gives valuable personal input for you to decide. Another great video! 👏🏼
I own and carry both a Glock 19 and FN 509C Tac. They are both awesome guns. I do carry my 509 more frequently.
First time I picked up a 509 & shot it, I was able to shoot it pretty well (for me at least) and I loved the grip texture - locks into place very nicely. Picked one up as soon as I was able to find a great deal (pre-Covid). Great gun & comes w 3 mags
neither my mid size or tactical came with 3 mags. Imo any gun over $500 should have a minimum of 3 mags especially the tactical.
@@fr8cture recently bought a FN 509 tactical and it came with only 2 mags, but in 17+1 and 24+1 capacity..
Great comparison video 👍. Very honest and fair. Take care and God bless 🙏🗽🦅👍
Went to buy a Glock and came home with an FN. The FN felt perfect in my hands, the Glock felt terrible.
Went to buy a Walther PPQ or CZ P07 and bought the FN 509. Just felt better all around.
It is a wonderful fit in both of my hands.
@@whiterangerrr P07 isn't that great. It should have impressed me but shooting it was just underwhelming, and if you ever have to work on they they are a nightmare.
Buying guns off of how they feel isnt always a good assessment on how u will shoot them
@@boomee78 Yeah, they are both very reliable, but the FN felt perfect in my big hands.
Terrific Job Marine!
THAT is the way a comparative review should be done...... BZ!
Thanks for your comparison between the Glock 19 and the FN 509. Enjoyed it. I have a few observations. Glock has without question a major share of the handgun market. That said, to say FN has been around for a fair amount of time is a bit of an understatement. FN Herstal was founded 130 years ago and is the world's largest manufacture of military small arms. Honestly, I'm a big fan of FN and especially the 509. For me, the trigger is fantastic. The slide stop/release is one of the few that works easily. It's one of the most accurate handguns I own and I have many of the more popular brands and models. For anyone looking for a new handgun, the FN 509 is well worth looking into. I'm equally fond of the FNX-40. It's a DA/SA hammer fired pistol.
I agree with your comments, but I wanted to chime in here. I watch these videos just to pass time and I think that’s what most people should use these videos for. You should never take someone else’s opinion and use it yourself. Test it and form your own opinion. Best thing about life today is that most of the popular modern firearms over $450 are just as reliable as Glock and since reliability is what most people use to justify carrying a Glock, you don’t have to worry about it when picking something else. The other major manufacturers (over about $450) are just as reliable. What it comes down to is training. Find what YOU like and buy it. Then send a shit load of rounds down range. Train on drawing and shooting. Reloading. That forms muscle memory and should you ever find yourself in a gun fight you’ll find muscle memory is extremely important when seconds matter. So find a pistol you like and train and carry it. Stick to it. It’s okay to own other firearms and shoot them but stick to one carry gun. One you’re most comfortable with and most proficient with. Because that’s what matters. And I think that’s where most complaints in these videos come from. These guys do that. And that’s okay. But because their muscle memory is used to one firearm it hinders them slightly in these videos. That isn’t a bad thing. It just means that maybe THEY shouldn’t carry that firearm. Or that if they want to carry it, they just need to train. But that doesn’t mean that because this guy has issues with the slide release that you will too. Or that it isn’t something you can’t train through. I know I rambled a little bit, but I’m hoping this comment reaches the targeted audience when they watch this video. All that’s important is finding what you like and prefer and training with it. Now everyone get out there and shoot!
I have a Glock 45 and an FN 509 , I liked the 509 so well I purchased another 509 and all 3 pistols came with 3 magazines.
good deal, goddamn FN mags are hella expensive
Same here bro I’m in law enforcement and I loved the Glock 45 Gen 5 but I just bought the FN 509 MRD LE. I really hope is a good gun
Great vid. Those inforce wild 1 lights available?!
FN 509 for sure. What a cool pistol.
Cool won't save your ass in the middle of the night. But Glock 17 will.
@@hldvoyeur4709 🤣🤣🤣 . We'd hate for that cool firing pin to break during an home invasion
You'll change. I just bought my first gun ever (I've had experience with many firearms over the years but never legally owned my own) which was the FN 509 Tactical FDE. My first range day right after I bought the gun, I hit two 4" groupings on the chest and head area with both 24 and 17-round magazines at 35 yards on a standing target. No issues and very well placed shots. I went to the same range the very next day and my groupings were horrible and I could barely hit the broad side of a barn. The FN requires FAR more variety in terms of of you handle the weapon, grip the weapon, angle your sight amongst other variables. The FN feels so well built compared to other handguns I've used in the past in terms of quality in every aspect. But like you said, you'll change almost certainly in time. I've noticed so far within 2 weeks of owning it that grip technique on the FN is CRUCIAL. It is a very natural 18-degree grip angle and you have to handle it as such. You cannot lean into it as much as other handguns it seems. The gun does not like to be manhandled, I guess you could say. Maybe that's just me. I don't know. But I absolutely love it so far. The price tag is a bit much, but with the 509 Tactical out of the box? You'll be spending MORE trying to get your Glock 19 built to the same caliber of quality. I hope you enjoy it and post a follow-up review showing your technique and how far you've come with it. Enjoy your show!
I’ve carried the Glock 22 for 20 years. My department just recently approved the FN 509 MRD LE and I wanted to try out a MRD. I am SOLD!!!! I absolutely love the FN 509 MRD paired with a Trijicon RMR!! I also just purchased the FN509 compact MRD and can’t wait to get it!! I’m officially a FN FANBOY!!
As a lefty I prefer the 509 I’m use to the controls and the trigger. I never shot glocks well or liked the grip angle that’s me. Doesn’t make the Glock bad just doesn’t fit me
Great job my friend!
Thanks so much bro
I have a 509 mid size and my friend has a glock19 5th gen. and we have been going to the shooting range for about 2 years. We put a little over 3000 rounds through the both of them. We shot steel casing brass and aluminum casing . The 509 did not have one problem but the glock jammed with the steel casing and failed to lock back slide when empty.
I've shot every kind of ammo there is through my FN509 Midsize never a malfunction of any kind. Glock is just not for me. I've shot my FN so long if I picked up a glock I'm not going to get a group as if I did with my 509. It's the person not the gun... lol
Did you use anything in the Marines for lubricant other than the standard issued CLP?
Exceptional Analysis 😎
Nice review, but remember that FN also has a 509 Midsize (15 round mag) that is very close to the size of the Glock 19.
I have a 509M, for me it's a bit more ergonomical than a G19, also a little heavier, my G45 is lighter and only about a quarter inch longer in the grip. Trouble with the 509 is aftermarket support and expensive as fuck mags. Also I've heard of FN firing pins breaking.
@@NYG5 if you want to alleviate the idea of the firing pin breaking grab the apex tactical firing pin it’s a lot better than the factory fn striker
Yes I just purchased one i love it
@@harmansmith84 if u have to change the striker to get a reliable gun i dont thinknits worth it u shouldnt have to replace internals for a gun to run reliably
@@boomee78 yeah it’s disappointing, but I imagined they fixed it by now however it’s nothing uncommon in the gun world to have issues when new models come out even for higher end companies. Hell the same thing happens in anything mass produced from guns to electronics to cars etc. but at least with the fn 509 it’s only a fifty dollar fix and I love everything about the gun
My EDC is the FN 509T, totally reliable and trust (obviously)…. Great Review.. 🇺🇸
Might be on to somethin there Gunz
Got it topped off with anything? If so whatcha got
The 509 is just a BOSS. I'm in the process of switching virtual all of my pistols to FN. I have become an FN Fanboy.
FN is a long time manufacturer of military firearms. They've made the FN FAL, the right arm if thr free world, one if thr best 7.62x51 battle rifles in the world, they made the FN High Power, one if the best handguns in the world, and they manufacturer the M4, M204 for rhe US military. They also make the SCAR rifles, used by Navy SEALS and other top tier units along with thr HK 416. They have a deoth of institutional knowledge to make a military grade pistol.
Thr 509 just got approved to be LAPD's issued pistol. High praise indeed.
Me to man. It started with my home defense gun the FNX 45 Tactical. I love that so much I bought the 509 C Tactical... I love the way they shoot, feel, look, and function. Great firearms
The 509 just feels better.
I am very happy that they got into the pistol game.
Dude, how about the FNS-9 release in 2011?
Happy about that pistol too...just more happy about the 509...
I have to agree with the personal shooting difference. I love my FN 509 Tactical, yet I definitely shoot my Glocks better. Yet I’ve been shooting Glocks for over 32yrs now.
I own both. My 509 is the midsize, it shoots great. I also love the G19gen5 and i struggle to hold that the one is better than the other in any aspect.
Which do you prefer in terms of grip angle, and do you notice that the 509 recoils more?
@@cattalkbmx that is a hard one to answer. For grip angle and recoil I feel the 509 MDs wins the sweepstakes for a better grip angle and less felt recoil by a thick hair. I customarily shoot 124 grain ammo.
Hard to take a winner . Thank you for your honesty
You mentioned the ambidextrous controls on the FN but not the G19. The Gen 5 has the ambi slide release and reversible mag release
So your saying it took 5 generations for them to figure that out ?
Saludo de 🇵🇷 Puerto Rico buena comparacion
Good video. I agree that the g19 and FN 509 are probably a tie. Where I have found FN definitely wins out is when you put the 509 compact vs the Glock 26. I also think the FN red dot mounting system is way better than the Glock MOS. I switched from a g26 edc to an FNS9C (previous generation FN striker fired pistol) about five years ago and recently switched to the 509c with a holosun.
Glock is sub par, I’ve only been using Glock 17,19 for the longest time and bought a FN and never looked back
@@desertwolfarmory the Gen 5 Glocks are much better than the older ones. But I’m with you, I switched a g26 for an FNS9c then a 509 compact mrd and a Gen 5 g17 to the 509 midsized mrd.
LAPD just chose the FN 509 MRD as their duty weapon! I love my 509C tactical
@Richard Mancl that is debatable lol
I find these videos informative but at the same time indirectly biased. The majority of the time when I see vids comparing handguns to glock, I get the feeling that they’re going to be favorable to Glock. Not because glock pays them or anything of the sort. Most of the youtube channels have guys who started with glock, their service pistol was glock, they’re range pistol is glock, home defense is glock, thousands of rounds with glock. You give them a new pistol to try out and while they praise the new pistol, they shoot better, feel better, overall GLOCK. Shooting is something that when you consistently train, That pistol becomes an extension of your arm. Weight, grip, trigger pull etc etc. its only natural that you’re going to do best with the pistol that you have spent countless ammo on. I’d love to see someone who has never shot a glock or barely shot one, put that person to the test with a glock and another pistol. That is how you’ll get an unbiased answer.
He liked the overall features of the 509 better, and he also likes the trigger, the sights, and the barrel more than the Glock. I don’t think his biasses have anything to do w favoring a manufacturer for no reason other than that’s all he’s ever shot, and everything to do with the statistics he mentioned at the beginning of the video.
Glock fanboys
Which one do you like best, and why?
Perceived recoil is influenced by not only bore axis but also by grip angle of the handgun.
Yup
He says the 509 only comes with two mags; bought mine brand new and it came with three 17 rd mags, three backstraps, and a soft case 🤷♂️ got mine about a year and a half ago. Definitely my favorite 9mm pistol out of the box. It's a little big, but still comfortable to carry. Tritium night sights make it the perfect edc in my opinion. VERY predictable and smooth trigger straight out of the box. Using many different rounds after nearly a thousand rounds, I've literally never had a jam or failure. I absolutely trust my life to this gun. Bravo FN
I have slightly large hands, and with the interchangeable backstraps, it literally feels like it was custom made for my hands
Seems to me that both go bang every time so their both good.
Thank You Brother God guns and family
what are talking about those are different back straps to help you fit the gun to your hand
Thought gen 5 glocks got rid of polygonal rifling
The polymer is why there’s more recoil with the 509. The fn is a stiffer frame. Gaston is still tops in my book…and I own a 509 tactical and a 509 tactical compact.
I have not fired the 509 and I don't need to; my Glock 17 is the best duty pistol there is. And this comes from a guy who owns two Sigs 226. One in 9mm and one .40 caliber.
How do you like the compact? I have the full size tactical and the full size LE 509. I was thinking of getting the compact.
@@hldvoyeur4709 how do you judge something without even shooting it?
@@fearnonebutone4977 the compact is nice. I bought a 17 round mag to have a full length/size grip. But its small enough to conceal comfortably but not too small where its uncomfortable
@@ChickenNuggetDino You have a good point, sir.
I have and like both!!!
Fn > Glock
I have owned both and think both are great pistols. I prefer the Glock over the 509 but the 509 pistols are good.
I have been carrying a G19 since 2008, but I am FN curious. I rented a tactical and liked it, it fits my big monkey hands and has that weird FN accuracy that you get with their rifles, it just always seems to hit where you need it to. It is not cheap, because FN, but I am curiour what made you choose the Glock over the FN?
I seen a few people say the FN wont fire if dropped in water. May sound silly or whatever but was that issue ever fixed ?
@@mattmurphy7030 lol I mean sig fixed the primer striker on the later p365 models
"I'm in a gunfight and I'm worried about my tactile and audible trigger reset."
It helps when you need to be accurate…..
Good review. G19 all the way. Also, it was hard to get past the constant reference of the slide stop as the slide release. #RLTW
FN 509 FTW
Have a 509 midsize and a glock 19 (and others) but truth be told, I can't say one is better than the other. The 509 seems to have much easier to manipulate controls for me, the slide is smoother to run, the mrd system is second to none. The slide is chunky though, it feels slightly top heavy, is a bit oversprung, and the triggers seem to be a bit inconsistent, though mine is great. A couple big gripes for me is the whole gun is overengineered and a bit overly complicated. Lots of smaller parts and the pin for the locking block is basically not user serviceable. The glock is nearly stupid proof. It's simple and you can strip it to individual parts in less than 5 minutes. It's ugly. The grip feels like a brick. The trigger guard is a bit tight, the mos plates are trash,
and I have to swap a part or 2 to get it where I want it.
That said, I like 'em both and can shoot 'em both just fine.
The best gun for self defense is the one you can shoot the best. But if you’re a gun guy just buy both to make sure you’re not missing out!
The FN is more comparable to the Glock 45 than just a G 19. I don’t think this a good comparison.
I disagree, I think the 509M is only a smidge longer in the grip than a G19 (which I prefer for my fat palm), the G45 is a quarter/one half longer in the grip, but maybe still lighter.
@@NYG5 no the guy is right the midsize should be compared to a glock 19 and the fullsize to a 19x 17 or 45 the same gap difference in the 509s is there for the fullsize glocks vs the 19
Good video. As I own a couple of each, I'm kinda on the fence as they are both great guns. The Glock gets a nod due to far, far more holster and aftermarket extras available, though, imho
Yup, now trying looking for a holster for an fn509t with a reddot and light, you'll get like five options...five, glock has probably 20-30
I have both also. The 2 things I don’t like about the FN is you cannot dry fire them without a snap cap. and the hinged trigger.
@@Jeff-xn1ew yup exactly, mines runnin an apex trigger and I don't know how many times I've forgotten NOT to dry fire my FN but I can't help it sometimes lol
@@Jeff-xn1ew the hinged trigger, for me, is more comfortable on my finger than the thinner glock
I have a 509 and a G45 and an Arex Delta that I'm going to shoot head to head, if you want a report afterwards I could let you know.
Yea I have my Glock 19 with a tungsten guide rod, true-precision match grade barrel, and the double Diamond 3.5 trigger connector. Its just perfect little to no recoil very accurate follow up shots.
What light is that you got on em
Inforce brand
Inforce Wild 1 and Wild 2
I can't even get 2 fingers on the grip of the G19, let alone my pinky. Way too small for me. I love the size of the G17 frame, or the G45, same thing. The 509 has a better sized frame for me.
Who are you, Andre the Giant?
@Papa Bleach I don’t think he means Glock 19 I think he’s holding a 26 or 34
I'm 64 255 lbs and can get a grip on a 19 barely but I can. I have to use pinky extensions but......
Try the 19X. 17 frame/19 slide.
Why are we not comparing the 509 Midsize to the 19? The original 509 and 19 aren't very comparable in size.
If s#!t hits the fan and it gets harder to get gun parts, what pistol will you have better luck finding parts for?
That's the one I go with.
Where did you get the wild one?
FN is the way to go, simply the smoothest shooting pistol next to the Canik TTI combat. CZ P10 C is up there but all three better than glock all triggers are shorter reset small travel, compared to glock.
Glock #1.
I also shoot my G19 better than my 509 both are fantastic pistols
Glocks ship with plastic sights… AND ALSO WITH METAL GLOCK NIGHT SIGHTS, or AMERIGLO NIGHT SIGHTS. Three different options, it just depends on your FFL what he carries from the factory.
The FN is all around better then the Glock!!
There is an FN 509 midsize that is more similar (size wise) to the Glock 19
509 is a true 1st responder
I had a FN 509 MRD compact and regret selling it to this day
That is legitimately insane
@@ATSGM well I’ve redeemed myself. I just picked up the FN 509C tactical brand new for only $725…It’s not going anywhere
If I had to choose one and had no budget I'm taking the 509 all day every day.
But the price of the Glock and accessory options alone make it worth it . You can buy a g19 and add a few bells & whistles for the same price as a stock 509.
I’m sure it’s a stellar pistol, but the polymer on the FN looks so cheap to me.
glock is like call of duty. selling you the same exact thing with tiny changes... WHY?
No need to reinvent the wheel
FN produced their first pistol in 1910 compared to Glock in 1980. He sound bias af imo!
Also if you shoot with the Glock better why switch. This comparison is a waist of time. Don’t they say go with what you shoot better with. What happened to stick with what you know, interms of efficiency ?
Got the little brothers of these guns and the FN is better in my opinion.
Gen5 Glocks don’t have polygonal barrel.
Semper Fi 0331
G 19
509 M feels better to me than the Glock.
👍🏻👍🏻🍺
Spain is different.
I believe the Glock 19 is overrated I do own one and here is my two cents number one I am not a very big man I am 5'3 which means I don't have very big hands but yet this gun feels too small in my hands I could imagine a bigger man number two I hate the way Glock just throws the gun in that box no presentation just here you go.... If we're praying $600 to $700 you could do a little better which is why I love my CZ P10F.... She's a Beauty and yes she is a full size 9 mm but everything about that gun is perfect it comes with trinium night sights factory unlike Glock..... And the way they present the firearm tells me that they care about their consumer it has a little cut out for the gun so the gun sit nice and snug and it's little spot... With the extra mag right next to it nice and lovely... Don't get me wrong the.... I could bet my life on that Glock that every time I pull that trigger it will go bang same said for the CZ... But if there is a bump in the night I will grab my CZ before the Glock just saying....
Does the 509 identify as a .45? It looks microagressed...
509 does not have a harder barrel than glock.
I own a 509 and Glock 20 but shot my friends Glock 45 the other day and was way more proficient with it
Abybody think glock better is a brand fan boy
FN fatal flaw. The firing pin.
Maybe early models but the LAPD put them through 20k round test and the pins did not break. And if you're still unsure get an Apex one for $50. You spend more than that to upgrade Glock sights
Old news. FN has LONG fixed that problem after the 1st batch was released.
The fn wins in looks, the glock wins in reliability.
I have used both guns and in my opinion I go with Glock hands down for multiple reasons. I shoot both guns well but I do shoot the Glock better and have way faster follow up shots which is very important in a gun fight. Of my one sample of a 509 I was very disappointed with the lack of durability of the slide and magazines to resist rust. I live in Florida and sweat buckets in the brutal humidity. My Glocks don't care!
I live in Miami and I carry my g19 to walk/run and it’s getting rust on the slide. I aiwb carry.
do you have a gen 5 glock, or an older one with the tennifer finish?
Sound like fanboyism
FN wins for me tbh better then glock.
Doesn't matter, the FN costs twice as much
I’m finding 509s all day for $540, glock 19s cheapest are around $480, if those $60 dollars aren’t worth the benefits in your opinion don’t buy it, both are a good option.
Not true 🤣🤣
Glock all day! But hey you tried to make enough excuses to keep the FN in it!!!!
FN is the better all around gun. thanks but no thanks I'll stick with the superior product
I’m more accurate with my fn 509 the. My Glock 19
Glocks are so fucking boring.
I have and FN, it's beater ,than the Glock !
Instead of been on camera most of the time , delete your self completely and show firearms only, from close distance, making visible every scratch and dent on them, only that way you can compare them …. So far Big Disappointment and Dislike 👎
