For my designated home defense semi-auto handgun, I bought an FN509 Compact Tactical with 10 magazines (5 24-round mags, 2 17-round mags, 2 15-round mags, and 1 12-round mag) and am outfitting it with a Holosun HE507C-GR-X2 green dot/green circle (installed, love the feature set, works great, very pleased), an Olight Baldr Mini white light/green laser (installed, fits beautifully, perfectly flush with slide, love the feature set, works great, very pleased), and a suppressor (yet to be purchased, but going to go with FN's own recently released Rush 9Ti 9mm suppressor specifically designed for the 509). With the 12-round mag, the compact grip is a hair too small for my hand size but, even so, it isn't intolerable. However, the 15-round and 17-round mags turn the grip (and capacity) into a mid-size and full-size, respectively. So I decided on the compact model just because it is slightly more concealable if/when I wanted/needed to conceal it on my person (with its slightly shorter slide and its short 12-round magazine), but, otherwise, can effectively have the same grip and capacity as the mid-size (with the 15-round magazines) and the full-size (with the 17-round magazines). And, then, of course, I've got all those 24-round extended magazines at my disposal, too. So, to my way of thinking, the tactical in the compact size just seemed to offer the most versatility and options.
just wondering… why the compact for home defense and not full size ?
@@lifeof_cb As explained in my comment, the compact converts into all the other sizes- compact, mid, and full-with a change of magazine. If I’d gone full-size, I would only have full-size. Going compact and having all the different magazine options, I have every size FN509 in one.
@@NewTraditionalists kinda… i see what your saying that the grip gets extended but it still has the shorter barrel so it has more of a snap. that’s more so why i asked i personally like a longer barrel for a home defense pistol…
@@lifeof_cb Yes, the full-size has a 4.5” barrel but the compact tactical has 4.32” barrel. Though, honestly, if I had it to do all over again, I would not have gone with the 509 at all (though it is a nice gun); instead, I would’ve gone with a Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 45 with threaded barrel, as almost all 45 ammo (both target and defensive) is naturally subsonic, while 9mm ammo is naturally supersonic and the selection of subsonic 9mm defensive ammo is extremely limited. To rectify my oversight, I’m going to additionally get a Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 45 5.1” threaded barrel. I’ll train with both and keep them in different parts of the house. But, yes, I would’ve gone straight to the Smith 45 5.1” threaded barrel if I knew then (a few years ago) what I know now.
@@NewTraditionalists yeah i personally am thinking of getting a fnx 45t for home defense … and i’m trying to figure out what to get for my next ccw i can’t decide between a sig p3650 or fn 509 midsize or compact.
The standard 509 midsize non mrd worked great for me.
Apex trigger and striker made it even better.
I conceal carry (IWB) the 509 Tactical daily. Even with a t-shirt on. With the extended mag, you cannot CC without printing very bad though. I also have shoulder carried this and it was super comfortable. I have 2k rounds though this and it has Never malfunctioned on me! I would bet my life on this gun all day, everyday.
I’ve owned all three sizes and the full size shoots the best even if you have smaller hands.
That's usually the case.
Just stop.
Almost as if when there’s more mass to absorb the energy the better.
Just purchased a 509m MRD
I love the FN 509 Midsized 9mm great firearm
I own the FN509 Midsize that I had Danger Close Armament customize for me, Midsize MRD, Compact, Compact MRD, Tactical that Danger Close Armament also customized for me, LS Edge, FNX45 Tactical, FNX9, FNX40, FN15 TAC3 & TAC3 Duty. Greatly enjoy my FN collection. Will add a Midsize Tactical & FN High Power next. Interested in what they do will the LS Edge cc maybe in a midsize option with a regular barrel. Not sure about that new threaded barrel as it currently won’t work with a can that’s available right now. Looking to see what comes in 2023.
Great video!!
I enjoy my 509 mrd compact with a RMR……she’s sweet! 👍🏻
I just picked up a slightly used 509 tactical, I'm a little paranoid about stories of firing pins breaking, and trigger troubles. What's your thoughts?
The issues have been addressed by FN since they 1st came out. I bought mine slightly used too and have personally put roughly 10k rounds through it with no issues. Only thing I put on is a Trijicon rmr type 2 and a Streamlight tlr7. Bought a Apex trigger thinking I needed it but the stock trigger broke in nicely. Fantastic and reliable gun.
I own the 509 and 545 and I have never had a problem with either one. They eat everything.
@rickycooper8269 Ya bud, I sold it but turned around and got the 509c and the 509 tactical with the updated flat trigger I carry the c very happy with both!!! 👍
The FN509 was adopted by LAPD - 10,000 officers. Can you get this on the CA Roster if LAPD can have it the average citizen should too. I was in a tactical course and we ran Glocks 19, Sig M18, and the 509 few others. The 509 is a beast hands down dead nuts accuracy. It comes with all the plates, co-wit sights tons of value out of the box.
I just picked up the FN509 MRD LE. It is available for the average layman not just LAPD...
I'm a bit confused on if the 509c tactical is the same gun as the 509 compact tactical. Can someone let mr know?
It is, 509c is the compact, 509m is the midsize.
How do they perform after dunking in a 5gal pail of water ?
That’s going to be “ Eenie Meenie Miney Moe” 🤷🏼♂️
Haha me every week 😅
No kidding, I would go crazy.
A good friend of mine is a walther rep after selling his own gun company.
Sometimes it ain’t fair
@@tomorrowsdesign lol it's a fun job for sure!
What is FN 509 CC Reflex?
Very good
Are the slides interchangeable between the 509 midsize and the 509 midsize tactical??
They are, they’re the same slide. Barrel is what is different.
The green finish wares a little too fast
If im correct, all of the OR variants have the same MOS. Does anyone know the cowitness of the irons in relation to the Holosun 507C X2? Trying to get 1/3 or 1/5 cowitness
They are suppressor height so they co-witness.
Which one can pass the water test?
What red sight is that on the 509 midsize tactical?
Trijicon RMR
@@JJM0 Thank you!
I guess you don't want anyone to buy the standard full size 509. You didn't even bring one with you or even say anything about it. huh You really work for FN
Please, do not point the gun at him. I know its not loaded but don't make it a habit.
Over 1000$😲
This is not for the poor 😌
Don’t be like me. Don’t get compact… a gun this size (tactical) and heavy and wide as it is should not be compact with a half grip that odd similar to a g26. Fn509 is a great gun but the compact is his plain stupid. I bought it because all these videos claiming it was the best and most versatile… BS
You got some big hands man? End of the day, what fits your hands ✋️ is most important, and then finding what gun fits YOUR needs the best. The compact could absolutely be the best gun.. for someone else. Guns are like shoes, doesn't matter how cool it looks if it doesn't fit.
I agree with Carters Country...Find a gun that fits comfortably in your hand...when buying guns I normally don't go for compact right off the jump only because i do have bigger hands..just a personal opinion
Yeah that’s why I’ve been researching which fn509 to buy as my first fn gun simply because I have big hands lol
@@joshuawarner1534 the 509 is great. But I don’t think the 509 compact is really a good move. The mid size and full size are great. I wish I did not the compact tactical for 1K. I do not have big hands. And the midsize was perfect. The full size is better for duty or big hands.
It just doesn’t make sense to have a 509 compact tactical at all. Unless your main concern is conceal ability, there are still better alternatives for that.
@@SnD340 and the full size that would be what they advertise as the midsize or the reg tactical 509?
LOL 1:03
Worst,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Trigger,, on the market........................................................
Someone needs to show that you how to hold a firearm. Pathetic grip.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed. They don't look like shooters.
I'm about to get rid of my compact tactical. It was my first gun and now that I own and I've shot the walther pdp pro I realize how much the 509 trigger sucks.
