Boxed off SPQR earlier this year. All of these books, except Rubicon because I have that, now added to my wish list ready for a big ol history read. Strength and Honour sir! Greatly entertaining and informative as always mate!
I'd never been interested in roman history prior to watching your tiktoks , but have now bagged myself some of Tom Holland's work after listening to his podcast and your vids on roman history books, excited to get into them!
yes, thank you! I've barely touched it so this was kinda "let's just hope it works right", will hopefully dial everything to unleash the full potential
When I saw the title of the video I was wondering if you would include The Storm Before the Storm! Mike's work between his podcasts and his books has all been fantastic.
I am just about to finish the War That Made the Roman Empire--great stuff. I particularly love how Strauss pieces together Antony's history when his voice has been so silenced and/or tainted by Octavian's smear campaign. I agree with all these suggestions. Once addition I might make is The Assassination of Julius Caesar: A People's History of Ancient Rome by Michael Parenti. It been a while since I read it, but I remember it covering the time around the assassination of Caesar from a different perspective.
This is AMAZING!!!!! I would love to know if you have any book recs for reading about greek history in chronological order? Not necessarily like myths or epic poetry but a history of Greek civilization, the creation of city-states, etc! Thanks!
I love your video’s man! You have reignited my passion for reading history! I would buy them from Amazon but I’m from Belgium so you won’t get the attrition unfortunately.
Michael please check out the incredible Landmark Historical series of books. There is only few but they are doorsteps and take about 10 years for each one to be produced. They are written by Robert B, Strassler. Examples are Thucydides (Comprehensive guide to the Peloponnesian war) _ intro by Victor Davis Hanson and other books on Julius Caesar, Herodotus and one on the campaigns of Alexander. All the best
Oddly, I just started reading original historical sources, just for fun. It is quite a project, as some sources are really extensive; and a bit of a slog. I bought a bunch of books for my Kindle. I expect I will be at this for quite a while! It is somehow encouraging that there are other people out there who are doing a similar thing, as I sometimes can find nobody who seems to be interested in what I have found absorbing. I thought it would be good to go to the original historians (Dio Cassius, Polybius, Josephus, Arrian, Appian, etc.) before I read more modern examinations (although I have already done a bit of that, just in the course of a lifetime's reading). There are a whole bunch of ancient Roman and Greek Historians, and translations are readily available.
Hi just wondering is there a book that covers a similar period the the kathryn lomas the rise of rome? as it is not avalible on audibible, whilst all the other are. Would love to know if there is as I am unsure of a book to kickstart the roman journey which then leads into carthage must be destroyed.
If you don’t mind explaining a bit, what is it about Roman history that makes it your favorite compared to others? I’m totally new to history lit so would love to know your opinion of why I should start with Roman history
@Rawafication hard to boil down but it has everything, big battles, political intrigue, fascinating individuals, and contact with so many different civilizations.. and like I mentioned, they're such a messy and complicated bunch
@xr69z none of them tbh, historians usually specialize in certain periods (for ex: the Byzantines are Roman but it's a much different framework).. SPQR Mary Beard does cover nearly 1000 years though (stopping at the 3rd Century AD)
I’d say Livy isn’t a hard read, but it’s mostly legends. So, better to start with a modern historian who will sift through the available evidence and give a more realistic account.
So pumped you are on youtube now, I don't even have tik tok but used to google your tik tok page to watch your videos lol love the content

If you are looking for content ideas, I’d love to hear recommendations on biographies of important people in history around the globe for beginners

I’ve seen you talk about Rubicon here and on your instagram a few times. Just got it in a second-hand bookstore, really looking forward to reading it!
Hope you love it!
Excited to get to these once I finish my obsession with 20th century south east Asia😂

I like your slightly sarcastic comment. You got your big brain on you. We're proud of you.
haha just heading those comments off at the pass even though they feed the algo

Should’ve worn a Lazio jersey!
hi michael . which one book will cover entire history of roman empire ?
@xr69z none of them tbh, historians usually specialize in certain periods (for ex: the Byzantines are Roman but it's a much different framework).. SPQR Mary Beard does cover nearly 1000 years though (stopping at the 3rd Century AD)
Very off topic, but do you switch your watch from your right wrist to your left wrist? I feel like I’ve seen it on both. Maybe I’m crazy
@hughmann1703 only on the left but if you watch my IG/TT stuff, some of it may be inverted (so it looks like the right)
Just got a Roman history tattoo
what of?!
@@KistReadsBooks it’s the coliseum with a soldiers head above. I do not know what social media platform I can send a picture.

Agreed it's not mega-hard if a schlep like me can take it down
