The mother just wants to protect her child from dangerous people online. I don't blame her. There are so many creeps, predators, and scammers online. People should be socializing in person more anyway, communicating online is so draining and it can make people lazy and flaky in regards to living a proactive life. I rather communicate in person myself it is so much more rewarding and it's nice getting out of the house.
It’s better to teach kids how to be safe from things like that online, instead of just making them not talk at all, causing issues down the road. She was genuinely trying to help, but executed it poorly.
I understand where the mom was coming from and it actually made sense for her to punish him since he was obviously too young for social media anyway. But when it comes to doing that to a young adult, that's a whole different story because not only they already know right from wrong, but they can be also aware of the boundaries that they need to have in order to have a clean public image on the Internet.

Then she understood that playing online is still me being social, so she didn't intrude unless I was yelling at people lmao I used to play with this dude who was in his mid 20s and he was the coolest dude I've met online. We'd play COD Zombies all the time and shoot the shit while shooting shit. I was 13 when I first met him. We drifted apart because he has a family and I obviously still had some growing up to do. I hope he's doing well.
