Build a Rabbit Hutch Design #2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 лип 2015
- A DIY rabbit hutch that adds privacy for all furry creatures that inhabit it. The installation of a solid bottom would make this hutch good enough to keep your rabbit(s) inside as well.
We place a grass mat inside so that our bunny has the option of getting off the hardware cloth if she so desires.

Additional info about sore hocks:
Rabbits can turn up with sore hocks on any type of flooring. The condition known as Ulcerative Pododermatitis has many known causes such as hard surfaces, exposure to constant moisture, compromised immune system, excessive thumping and bacterial infection.
All wire bottom floors can cause problems IF the grid spacing of the wire is too wide and the gauge of wire used is too thin. I recommend no more than 1/2" spacing with 16 gauge wire. 1/4" spacing with 23 gauge wire may be used for smaller breeds of rabbits. I also recommend it be galvanized to prevent rusting.
Additionally, the inclusion of something as simple as a piece of cardboard or a grass mat will provide entertainment as well as a place to lounge if they wish to get off the wire.
In the summer time our rabbits lounge on the wire and in the winter they don't seem to care.

I have 5 rabbits and i am busy making my hutch too, almost finish, but it took me almost a week to build it. bommer only now i saw this video. I love this hutch, you make it so easy to make it.Thanks for sharing this video Stan.
CAN EVERYONE STOP WITH HATE COMMENTS!!!! He can do what he wants! If u make it, modify it with your needs.
+Strawberry Bunny Very sensible comment. I like.
Awesome! It looks great 👍🏻
Stan, something I started doing to save time and money on a project is that I take a box of countersink screws over to my bench grinder and I will grind of one side of the threads about 1/4 of the length of the screw from the tip. This essentially turns a regular screw into a self tapping screw like you see with Kreg Screws. It's tedious while doing the grinding, but so worth it come project time.
Well done sir love it.
but nice job your rabbit hut looks AWESOME:)
Good job I would highly recommend that you should make it a bit bigger
Great work as always, thx for sharing
Reflecting is always good.. hey did u ever figure anything out for the zero clearance insert? Thanks for sharing stan.my daughrer has a pet rabbit nothing special fluffy with floppy ears ..maybe ill hook her up with 1..have a good one man!
What size wire do you use for the cage bottom? I used 1" X 1/2" wire and got sore hocks and thinking about using 1/2" hardware cloth. Maybe the smaller wire will be less irritating on their feet. And yes I made foot savers out of plastic laundry baskets and that didn't help.
this is great and I am sure this rabbit would love it but I am also a rabbit owner and if you have wire flooring it will most likely give the rabbit sore hocks. they really just need that little cozy house part of the hutch to be lined with cardboard since there feet are very sensitive
+BREE WELLS All they need is an option to get off the wire. We add a grass mat for that and to give her something to chew on.
+Stan Sullivan oh OK I thought it was all wire base sorry
I was actually thinking about replace the flooring with something else
Wire flooring doesn't give them sore hocks. That's a myth
We have rubber liners for the wire the stuff you use for pigs
Nice vid, I like the design of the ones you made for your neighbor better for breeding meat rabbits. And I wanted to share a tip I found when working with hardware cloth. I recently made a 12'x12' chicken run all enclosed with 1/2" hardware cloth, and an angle grinder is by far the best way to cut that stuff down. Takes only seconds.
+Charles Hanson Nice tip, thanks.
Great video. this helped a lot. im stuck at the doors! any resources on how to build those? thanks!
Okay, I see you used 1/2" hardware cloth, how has it worked for you? Any wire clogging with poop?
how much did it cost to build this whole hutch and could i substitute wood floors for the wire bottom?
My dad and I are going to build a modified version of this hutch for my pet rabbit for the backyard sense my brothers dog isn't too good with rabbits. Your design was really good but my dad is the guy who doesn't want to copy people but make his own design out of it so... Yeah, thanks again! :D
Thanks!
I think it's very well built I'm trying to build a rabbit hutch of my own I thought it was best to have a sliding tray for the floor and wood beneath that. all together I think that hutch is brill
Insight from what I have learned - we get a lot of rain, and at some point you will realize it would be nice to have a gravity feeder. I built a hutch recently, and wished I would have made my roof cover the gravity feeder too. I just use a scrap piece of tin and lay it over it for time being.
Nice one dude
Thank you for providing this, I built it and I'm very pleased. What are you using for wood protection?
+Eric Aker It's a Flood product. If you find the link to the design plans in the description of this video and head to my website. Their will be a Materials list. I provide a link to the exact product I use. Plus a few others as well. If you use it or a similar product, I wouldn't apply it to the inside of the hutch and allow it to dry for at least 48 hrs before use. Hope this helps.
did u change camera between this one and the other hutch video?
+dirtpatcheaven No, I changed the settings. I think I started recording at 60 fps as opposed to 24fps.
love the build. your exact material list? and please can you send dimensions?
thank you
I so love this hutch! I am better with duct tape than screws though...
+dirtpatcheaven Magyver built a name on duct tape. Whatever works.
do you have design plans for the hucth?
What model Ryobi nailer are you using?
Looks like an A-1 quality job you did Stan, have you had many request to build any for friends and how much would you charge?
you are awesome
I'm curious what metal type wood clamp you were using in this video. I looked around today and didn't find anything like that. Would you mind sharing the specifics of yours? I really like it. Thanks for the video. I'm going to try building one tomorrow.
+onebadboy2 If you look in the description for the link to the design plans on my website and then scroll down to just below the materials list you will find a link to the exact tool I think you are referring too. Hope it helps. Thanks.
+Stan Sullivan Wow man, now that is a fast response. Appreciate it sir!!
+Stan Sullivan .....and subbed sir.
Salute sir
Stan Sullivan what is the dimension of the rabbit hutch
Great work, looks absolutely amazing. It is way too small for a rabbit though....
ਕੀ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਕੋਲ ਹੁਣ ਵੀ rabbit ਹਨ
What tools did you use?
Very nice💪💪
How long did this take?
Skillzzz :)
Not sure if u said it in the video but how much did u spend on material?? Thank u
It depends on how much of the material you have on hand already. I think I spent around $30 but I already had most of the lumber in the shop. I had to buy the hardware, roofing material and a box of screws. So I would estimate around $50 to $60.
you didn't show how you made the doors
I also raise rabbits, I am also expanding the barn.
what would best 18v /20v system cause I wont to start to get a line up and I was wondering what would be the best brand to go with thanks
mitchell hamlin I can't answer that question. It depends on what your looking for and what is important to you in a tool. I have a blog post that talks touches on this subject. www.simplyeasydiy.com/2014/06/the-mail-slot-letter-1.html
ok thanks
I've been looking up facts about rabbits and they say that wired floor is bad for the rabbit. One more thing can your rabbit hop four times? and can your rabbit lay down with no problem? Also can your rabbit stand up with no problem?
+Minecraft girl Yes, it can do all those things. We add a grass matt to give her the option to get off the wire. People like to make this comment without realizing their are options available beyond a permanent solid bottom.
Hello, can someone please help me?I literally know nothing about hardware tools and stuff like that.So I wondering what that tool is called at 4:20
Pneumatic brad gun. If that brad hits a knot the brad will often curl back out of the stock penetrating nearby fingers. Great tool but it should be respected. cheers
The tool at 4:20 is called a bong or a pipe. Papers are acceptable.
What our the measurements to this frame?
can you make a video on a bigger rabbit hutch plz and also your rabbit hutch is the best
+Houzaifah Huz I have two videos on rabbit hutches. Did you see the second one? I think I have a link to it in the description. Thanks.
Do you have any idea how much this cost (the wood, wiring, hinges, etc.)?
+Emily Munsell Materials list on my website. You can price things out according to your area. $50 maybe. Just a guess.
Stan Sullivan thanks! :)
how long you take to make this hutch?
Hi Stan, Do you have a cut list for the rabbit hutch #2 in this video ?
+Product Fusion Yes check the description.
Where is the material and cut lengths? The back is lower than the front
JillDuane Richards yes that is the design
Can you send me the blueprint to that hutch pls
Would this design work for guinea pigs?
I wouldn't use the wire flooring for guinea pigs but otherwise sure. I don't see why not.
Ok thank you, my daughter will be very happy for her guinea pigs due to our hutch being broken
how much did all the wood cost
I don't know. I built a different hutch for my neighbor and they bought all the materials. Payment was enough materials to build one of my own. That design can be found on my channel as well if you haven't seen it. I'd guess less than $50 depending on the type of materials. The cut list on my website can be used to tally board feet and you can go from their.
no I need a bigger one can you make a video plz
yes I see the second one but it is small I need a bigger one plz can you do a cidea for me
+Houzaifah Huz You'll have to leave a link to what a "cidea" is.
Stan are you a Australian woodworker
mitchell hamlin No
ok cause I have a friend and his dad does wood working and his name is Stan Sullivan as well
How much did it cost toy to make this?
I think 30 dollars? in the netherlands cost it 20 euro 😂
Wow, I thought it was like $50
Loraine Oudman thanks for letting me know
My dad is making me one and we went to the store and budgeted everything and ours was like $70
Are rabbits good for their meat or pets only?
Adam R It depends on the breed. New Zealand and Californian breeds are often times raised for meat production due to their relatively large size. Depending on your purpose for raising them I would recommend different housing methods. Pet rabbits would need not just a hutch but also a run to stretch their legs. Doesn't need to be attached.
Stan Sullivan Around here, people only eat wild rabbits, and those are just the outdoors/hunter type. It's kind of game-y tasting.
Bruce A. Ulrich You are correct. Wild rabbit is very gamey tasting. Domestically raised rabbit is less so. I find the animals diet is a huge factor. I also add rendered lard or grass fed beef tallow because rabbit is too lean. That cuts the taste to a more domestic flavor.
Is this hutch good for meat rabbits or is a rabbit run better?
A lot of people that raise rabbits for meat don't let their rabbits loose in a run too often because they say it makes the meat tough. I can not confirm or dispel this notion. I can say that how ever you choose to raise your rabbits and for what purpose you raise them for is your business and it is best to research the pros and cons of any particular method. You would have to define what "better" means to you in order for your question to be properly answered.
+Stan Sullivan oh ok it was just because I was planning to start to raise rabbits for meat soon. Thanks for your opinion!
I have a rabbit and I made it with my dad
How old should the rabbit be before killing it?
12 weeks old before slaughter.
I know what the answers to them are
Awesome.
Ignore those 2 questions
Now show how to do it with minimal tools...
Nice. Do u raise pets or meat? Just a question. I personally don't believe in eating rabbits but it's your choice
+Strawberry Bunny I don't personally like rabbit enough to go through the trouble of dispatching them. We raise them for the help they provide in the garden. Agree with your sentiments. Let people do what they do. No one has to follow suit.
+Stan Sullivan ok
this hutch is ways too small...
+beingwithme So tell people why you believe this along with supporting evidence. Also give what size you believe to be appropriate along with further evidence. Generic comments like this help no one.
