DIY Rabbit Hutch / Cage

  • Building a rabbit hutch was a project that was bound to happen at some point. I have been wanting rabbits of our own for various reasons for a while now. So when my neighbor asked me to build them some cages for their bunnies I thought, "perfect."

    Additional info about sore hocks:
    Rabbits can turn up with sore hocks on any type of flooring. The condition known as Ulcerative Pododermatitis has many known causes such as hard surfaces, exposure to constant moisture, compromised immune system, excessive thumping and bacterial infection.
    All wire bottom floors can cause problems IF the grid spacing of the wire is too wide and the gauge of wire used is too thin. I recommend no more than 1/2" spacing with 16 gauge wire. 1/4" spacing with 23 gauge wire may be used for smaller breeds of rabbits. I also recommend it be galvanized to prevent rusting.
    Additionally, the inclusion of something as simple as a piece of cardboard or a grass mat will provide entertainment as well as a place to lounge if they wish to get off the wire.
    In the summer time our rabbits lounge on the wire and in the winter they don't seem to care.

    This is by far the nicest laid out rabbit hutch plans on the internet and gorgeous to boot. And for anyone that is complaining about size, simply add on a foot or what ever you would like to the width, it's not hard.
    Thank you tremendously for this!

    Were these hutches for pet rabbits? Or did your neighbor get into the backyard rabbitry homesteading business? I'm starting up a small rabbitry and think these are the best outside hutches on the net! I went as far as ripping a few 2X4s in half and putting the frame together...at 30X36X18(at the lower in of the 15 degree angle) they seem like the perfect size to me so far!!! Did your neighbor run into any unforeseen problems that you care to share? If all goes to plan, I should have all 6 of mine built by around the end of the month!!! Thanks for sharing this design!!!

    Just like the cage you are building in the video but with a box on the back for each rabbit to go into for when it gets cold out. I live in Iowa and in the winter the weather can get to about -10 or so. I hopes this helps you understand what I meant in my first post.

    I agree wire flooring gives animals bumble foot and sore hocks

    • @simplyeasydiy
      @simplyeasydiy  8 років тому +1

      I give links on the "suspected" causes of sore hocks plus interviewed two local vets and a local breeder and they all agree that there is more to the condition than wire flooring. Some rabbits never develop the condition despite wire flooring while others develop it and never spent a day on wire flooring. Please look further into the issue as I have. Thanks.

      Buy wire that has tiny holes so the surface area pressure of the wire is spread out along the feet and have a small area un wired for resting. Really doesnt have to be complicated or a big deal. Also proper cleaning and management clears ALOT of problems

    • @justforfun4623
      @justforfun4623 5 років тому

      Wire flooring does not hurt a rabbits feet. I raise rabbits and have for awhile in all wire hanging cages, not one issue. From what i was told from a few breeders that have been raising rabbits for 30+ years is that sore hocks is genetic. Now using the hardware cloth he used is not a good choice in wire as it will be more costly in the long run and more cleaning as the poop may not fall through, now using 1/2×1 inch 16 gauge wire will get you alot longer floor life. But they are some nice looking hutches and what ever wire suits their needs.

She's not very big and want to make it not only a house but a play area for her also. and can they be just two big ones for two rabbits?

    So what is the actual dimensions for each of the three hutches? Not being rude. I’m young and wondering the size because I plan on building a few hutches outside and want to make sure I don’t have to change the dimensions depending on my Breed of rabbit. From what I understand they are 2ftx2ft am I wrong?

      lionbearcat You could although there are probably more efficient designs out there for that. If you have that much space to dedicate to a rabbit I recommend incorporating run space as opposed to a larger hutch design. JMHO

      Slowvannah Farms As far as the bedding is concerned I do not know. As far as the shared space is concerned I asked that same thing and even asked if they wanted them to at least see each other and they said, "NOOOO!!!" They know a whole lot more than I do on the subject and it's there hutches so I will yield to their knowledge and experience on the subject. They told me what they wanted and I built it. I had a lot of fun doing this project. I learned a lot and I'm glad they asked me. You are not alone in your thoughts and thanks for the kind words.

      And so all those little boys and girls with pet rabbits in their bedrooms are evil and cruel. Plus all those who do not have idea conditions or space are evil as well. Your comment looks at the world as black and white when really it is different shades of grey. so far I've heard 2x4, 4x4 8x8, 8x16 and rabbits should never be put in any size cage what so ever. I say work with what you've got and make the best of it.

    I have a 4 by 6 hutch divided into 3 sections. Can that hold 2 rabbits in each 4 by 2 section?

    • @simplyeasydiy
      @simplyeasydiy  8 років тому

      +connor wall That depends on the breed of rabbits you have. Some are larger than others and therefore need more space than others. It also depends on what you believe is enough space for each rabbit and for what reason you are raising them. You have 6x4=24 sqft total. Divided by 6 rabbits leaves each rabbit with 4 sqft of space. Some people would probably crucify you for that. However I'm a little more pragmatic about it and say if that is the space you have to work with then I guess it will have to do. Hard and fast rules are pointless and do not take into account each persons unique situation.

    • @connorwall6928
      @connorwall6928 8 років тому

      OK thanks i was just thinking about getting rabbits.what breeds do you recommend?

    • @simplyeasydiy
      @simplyeasydiy  8 років тому

      +connor wall This depends on why you will be raising them and if you will be keeping them inside or out. If raising meat rabbits then I recommend the New Zealand or California white breed. They are large and fairly docile. Plus they are very common. You can usually find them locally by doing a simple search on Craigslist. If you want pets and will be keeping them inside I recommend the Himalayan or Chinchilla breeds.

      @simplyeasydiy  8 років тому

      +Calvin Rock Not stupid, it's hard to tell if someone is joking sometimes. Whether or not rabbits get cold in terms of how you and I feel cold I do not know. However, they have fir which will insulate them to some degree. They need shelter obviously to protect them from the open elements. In the wild they dig burrows. Domesticated rabbits, we provide the shelter in the form of a hutch. I live in Florida where the temperatures stay between 50 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter. If it gets to cold where someone lives then obviously they will want to take extra precautions for their animals during extreme temps.

      +Shelbie Brazil This comment has already been addressed. All they need is the ability to get off the mesh. That is what grass mats are for. Also, cardboard, a piece of wood or Plexiglas works too. God bless.
