My grandfather died and he has the black face version of this radio. My father said it was a very nice radio so I'm hooking it up in the Freightliner. He also had a President John Q, I think? This one looks nice. Can't wait to try her out.
I had one . Audio was weak out of the factory so I had mine adjusted. I loved this radio! It was stolen out of my car and I never replaced it. Wish I had.
I think about Jackson is the best radio cb on the world every times.. sensivity ..selective ... loud .. Is best legend radio forever ... Radio .. no computer .. resistors transistors capacotors coil ..
I just featured a Jackson on my UA-cam channel that I received in a box of radios this past Friday night. It was so beaten up that you cannot make out what it is. The "Jackson" stamp is gone, you can barely see the President logo and the plexiglass panel over the push buttons is gone. But, much to my surprise, this radio screams. It has a forward swing of 40 watts, has more modulation on tap than you can imagine, the SSB works, the clarifier is unlocked on AM and it has very clear audio. On the downside, the meter and meter light are dead and the squelch knob does nothing, but I'm looking into having a faceplate graphic made for it and fixing those issues.
I bought a Jackson back in the early 90s. I still remember the brown and white box it came in. Great memories talking around Houston with the Jackson and a Radio Shack ground plane antenna. I talked all over the world on that setup.
Because it can slip into any frequency down and up from the citizens band radio 80 channel's is amazing! Sometimes i transmit there, sometimes i listen!
I have this radio. You are right about AM. These things are not much for am. But SSB is great. I had it peaked and still not much on am. I have a Superstar 3900 built in mexico. Had it since 1989. It was kept in a box until i hooked it up in 2006. Great am radio too. It is so loud on modulation. But i still like the Jackson.
I have one of these. Been using it for 25 years. Ps the 10 kc button will fill in the chip gaps on the frequency. I love how I can slide through Every frequency from 80 channels below cb to 80 channels above cb!
Nice review you`ve got everything spot on with the radio they do work exactly as you described, i still have my 5 band black fronted jackson, the badge on the rear says "made in the phillipines" on mine. Although its been in its original black n white box for a few years now. The later 6 band versions (auto squelch ect) where not as good. 73`s
worked and confirmed direct mail over 150 countries with that radio and a homebrew 4 element yagi in the 80's /90s on 11 metres, lost it to a flash thunderstorm when I went to town for an hour , replaced with a RCI 2950, the Jackson was a better radio.
thank you very much for providing us radio"fans" with this page and your excellent reviews. outstanding job. much respect and happy Dxing and modulating!!!!! 73,KB3YJO david
Great to see the Jackson again. fordbroncodave I feel the same way, but I want one radio the silver face Jackson and I'll be set. thanks again for the review.
they are nice radios but i would never pay that kinda price for an older radio. i had a similar radio with a very very rare extra channels modification and frequency counter. look through my videos for the president vid. cbradiomagazine, keep up the good vids and website! you are awesome and do great reviews
The AMC control is for that carrier not the modulation the best way to get modulation out of any AM radio is you find out what is the total power it can do with that output stage then if you want to do a hundred percent modulation you use 10% of power just on the carrier alone so when the radio Peaks forward a hundred percent modulation it will do four times its power you never crank the carrier up because the more carrier you give it the less modulation
I just today bought one at an estate sale for $20. came with an unknown make/model/wattage linear amplifier. Was going to ask $100 for all on Craigslist but now, after reading/hearing what a desirable radio it is, I'm going to ask $200 for everything. Even has anti-theft lock WITH key! Radio is in mint condition. Haven't tested it, though.
Yamaha SR650 you're going to go ahead and ask $200 for everything but yet you haven't tested it? After you posted that you bought everything for twenty bucks, really? Are you even into the radio hobby at all either ham radio or CB?
After first reading your response, I thought: "Oh, no. Another 'troll'." But, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt with this: "My time is worth $65 an hour. Am I to add that to the price of the equipment?" No, I'll pass. Besides, there's a guy on ebay with a "Buy it Now" price of $179.00 plus $20 shipping and he states something like: "Not tested. Face lights up." See, in today's world, items are generally sold "as is-where is. Remember also, I'm selling local. If someone's interested, they're welcome to borrow some of my jumper wires and "power up" on any of my three 12VDC vehicles. Am I "into the hobby"? You talkin' 11 meters? Well, back in olden times, "yes", I was right along side everybody else with the exception of "T Hunts" which I found too childish. I started off in 1976 with a 200 milliwatt Radio Shack "handy talkie" and went "mobile" from there in some of my 18 International light trucks. I even went so far as to bungee cord an American-made Pace onto my American made Harley-Davidson. "ham"? No. My late father was N6AMQ (silent key) and I ended up with among other things, his Yaesu FTDX560 (I believe) and his Kenwood 2 meter FM hand held. I used to run my Cobra 148GTL (with "extra freqs") up in his "Ham Shack" running on his 10 meter antenna. Worked fine! I believe his tower was 50 feet. One guy wire was an antenna as I remember. Am I in the hobby today? No. Can't put a radio in a 2017 Silverado. I do run an old 23 with a 100W "heater" with a 9 foot steel whip in my 1967 International 1 ton dually Rat Rod. I still have my Uniden 40 SSB with "extra freqs". No, I've long since outgrown 11 meter as a "hobby". I've "shot my skip" to Japan, Australia, Great Britain, East L.A; Pacoima and points beyond. I use it today as a "long distance radar" for "smokey reports". I'm long past the days of meeting wierdo CB'er chicks to get laid and arguing with spoiled kids. If I was serious about getting into the hobby, it would be Amateur but now, I believe you don't even have to know Morse Code to be licensed meaning, there's probably stupid kids on ham picking fights and cussing up a storm. If it helps, the lady was asking $40 so I really got a killer deal. Even if it doesn't work, anybody who knows how to plug in a soldering iron and read a multimeter should get it going. Why? You wanna buy it, kid?
Yamaha SR650 yeah I still enjoy the hobby very much and now 11 meters that sounds pretty good here locally and when the skip roles in it's kind of cool also to me it's very nostalgic and I enjoy the ham radio hobby also myself and I like to hang out on 3885 a.m. I always encourage people to get into the hobby it's very cool I recently started doing the satellites and I wish I felt like a kid with a new toy LOL
You forgot to mention this radio had a AGC issue on Side Band making some stations sound really bad. Issue was fixable, I had this radio back in 1991. Best mic was the Sedelta Echo Master for this radio. Frequency range was 26.065 MHz through 28.305 MHz.
I don’t know that mic, in Italy n the 80's /90s the Zetagi MB+ (4/5) was considered the best for the Jackson. A little curiosity: without changing anything, using a trick, it's possible to descend till 25MHz.
@@yokupokumayoku8544 There were mods to make it go down to 25.615 MHz but you will lose the top end & it will end at 27.855 MHz. You need to change one of the crystals & Band A will be your 25 MHz part.
@@drsysop Without changing anything: suffice move the band selector between A and B, connect a frequency meter and press the mic button to verify this. You will have available 10/15 channels on 25 Mhz (I don't remember exactly, it's been a long time).

I just nabbed a bone stock 'virgin' Uniden Grant that looks a lot like this rig, but I'll bet this board is more like a Galaxy than the 148GTL/Grant board. What chaps my ass is these companies never added a 5Kc drop for SSB between channels on the 0.000 freq. I don't believe the 8719 even has a provision for it, but please correct me if I'm wrong!

This was the first "bigboy" radio I cut my teeth on when I was a kid. Awesome radio and awesome memories. The 10kc slider blew my mind back then.
