- Milorganite fertilizer is a WAY over hyped fertilizer that people claim has some kind of miracle fertilizer properties. "Got a brown spot? Milorganite. Neighborhood kids won't stay off your lawn? Throw some Milo on them"...
It might be an organic fertilizer, but did you know it has TOXIC METALS in it?! We need to talk about all of the problems with this product and what to do about Milorganite instead.

✅ Did you know Milorganite has Lead and Arsenic in it?!
3.6mg/kg of arsenic is practically nothing. If that minimal amount concerns you than you should do a bit more research on 2,4-D (28% of SpeedZone). By far the most toxic herbicide we apply to our lawns on a regular basis.
Broccoli has Arsenic and Sweet Potatoes have Lead. I don't think that is a big reason to not use of it is in acceptable levels.
Lead and arsenic is in countless products. Milorganite has very small amounts compared to many products including food.
Did you know your meat has rat poop in it ? The FDA says there is a acceptable amount of rat poop in your food. I don’t think any amount is ok.
The fact that it is now like $22/bag which covers 2500 sqft is why I quit. Used to be about $8
I heard it still is in some local small mom and pop shops on Milwaukee, but you’re right. It’s WAY too expensive for what it is
Yeah it was my favorite based off price now it's just as much as the rest of these products
its 17 bucks at walmart
I just paid under $10 at Fleet Farm yesterday
It's been calculated many times that if you removed the top 6" of soil and filled it in with straight Milorganite, you would still be under the EPA limits for EVERY single heavy metal listed.
One thing to consider is the form of the metals. Any lead in the Milorganite is organically bound, plus lead soil binds easily.
By the same token, sodium is explosive and chlorine is extremely poisonous--but you don't think twice when you put salt on your food. The chemistry matters, and when bound together, they're not only harmless, you require them.
The one case where I wouldn't use it is where I had a known lead issue. In that case, I'd use the most lead-limited fertilizer possible to avoid adding any more (plus I'd be working on removing it as much as possible).
The highest levels of arsenic (in all forms) in foods can be found in seafood, rice, rice cereal (and other rice products), mushrooms, and poultry, although many other foods, including some fruit juices, can also contain arsenic.
I use Chick-n-Poo now which is aerobically treated chicken droppings. Not sure it is available everywhere but I believe in the midwest it should be.
Fresh content kyle!
lovin the garage studio! keep up the good work bro!
Thanks, George!!
This video needed to be made. Thanks for doing it.
Share it with your peoples! People go SO crazy over this stuff and I am not sure why to be honest. Thanks for your support as always, Ruben!
I wouldn’t compare Milo to actual fertilizers even though they consider it an organic fert. It’s more of a soil amendment. So for a soil amendment it is cheap. Most soil amendments are $65-125 a bag which covers anywhere between 4000-15000 square feet.
I’m sorry but I have to disagree with you. Even Milorganite calls it fertilizer. It doesn’t make these downside any better
Lead and arsenic are found natural in soil. I love milorginite but I use it in conjunction with other products.
Sneaky product drop in the background with the LUBA robomower 😂 thanks for the informative video!
👊🏻 oh you caught that eh? I wondered who would!!!
It's not hard to mislead people with statements like 'Milorganite contains Arsenic and Lead.' Many foods we eat also contain Arsenic and Lead. We should all understand that substances like Arsenic and Lead will only cause harm if consumed in large quantities (as determined by the FDA). I don't know why you won't share this detail with the audience but ignorance should never be an excuse.
This is a perfect example of why it pays to do your research, compare information, and learn about the ulterior motives that some content creators may have to scare you away from some products to offer you other alternatives (with financial incentives for the creators).
The levels of Arsenic and Lead in Milorganite have been analyzed by the FDA....
If somebody put a plate of food in front of me and said “this one has arsenic and lead, this one does not”….which would you choose?
@@TheLawnMentor that's not the question since everything we eat has some amount of substances considered toxic if ingested in large quantities. My question would be if this product does its job safely - Milorganite does the job safely.
@@PauloCX07 I hear you and I understand your point of view, but ingredients aside, there are way better options out there than this
@@TheLawnMentor that's something I can accept. If you find other products that work better for you, It makes sense to make a video like this. My only point is the assumption that because it has lead or arsenic, you should avoid it. Arsenic and Lead do absolutely nothing if the quantities are minimal. Thanks for the video, and thanks for responding. I think it makes it more informative when people discuss different points of view.
To each their own. Many people use this HEAVILY in their program, so that also increases the amounts of heavy metals going down. It’s just not for me 😀
I have never used Milorganite, but there are definitely milo diehards out there. Very informative video, well done Kyle 🤜💥🤛
Thanks Justin!
nice video buddy....I haven't put da poop on my lawn for years 🤣🤣
Well, not from Milwaukee anyways, right? I hear you have an extensive local supply! 💩
@@TheLawnMentor I'm full of it
So I’ve heard!!!
my thing with milorganite is im wondering if the pasteurization/heating process of the material destroys all the nutrients in the fertilizer
The milorganite bag label should also say it is made from Milwaukee sewage and contains bratwurst sausage cheese and beer.
LOL what’re the EPA regs on that one?!
@@TheLawnMentor Normally the EPA would shut down a company emitting even the smallest amounts of heavy metals into the environment. In this case they allow this product to be dispersed throughout the country on lawns which will end up in roads and waterways. How nice.
@@mrBDeye not the best scenario eh? Figured it was a good thing to discuss.
@@mrBDeye That's not true at all. Vegetables, chocolate and almost anything grown from soil has heavy metals in it... As long as it's not a whole lot of heavy metals it's safe. Milo is safe regardless of what you think about it as a product.
Local Walmart has Milo for $14.98
That’s cheaper but still not enough for me to consider it
Dollars per pound of Nitorgen:
Milorganite - $8.84
Greene Punch - $20.69
Lesco - $5
Thanks for doing the math! Important to weigh out your needs and all the ingredients too.
Milogarnite has been a No-Go for at least 3 or 4 years now. For that price per # and the results I just can't justify it. I have switched to mostly liquid applications and with the prices of granular products continuing to climb I dont think I am switching back.
That makes two of us my friend! Sounds like we’re both on the same wavelength
I'm surprised you don't spray DEF Fluid on the lawn for instant Nitrogen.
Rather use AMS!
That’s a trade secret 🤫.
Thanks for that awesome review, I used to buy this, not anymore. The Lesco fertilizer you recommend, is it like organic or is it lab made synthetic fertilizer?
It is synthetic
To THICKEN your yard use Milo heavy for one summer. It is amazing for that! The next year just use it one time, but mostly use Lesco.

What do you suggest for super high iron numbers in my soil test. I think normal range is somewhere in the 7-11 and I came back at a 113. Also appears my PH is a little low at a 5.08 so I’m trying to stay away from Ammonium sulfate. Is there a product you’d recommend that raises ph and another that lowers iron content in soil ? Great content Thanks in advance
What kind of soil test did you have done? Sometimes you have super high nutrient levels because it isn’t being used by the plant due to something like pH bring off.
@@TheLawnMentor just a standard yard mastery soil test/analysis. The test says powered by MySoil TM. I took samples from 7 or 8 spots of both my front and back lawns/mixed them up and sent it out.
You need to work on that pH with some Lime. Just make sure you get the correct type of lime per your nutrients. I would work on that and leave the iron numbers alone
Hi, as far as the lesco product from home depot, let me start off by saying I think lesco products are great! My question is, is that 24-0-11 a slow release fertilizer? And how often should it b put down and at what rate? Also, I interchange every 2 weeks between ammonia sulfate and 20-20-20, 1 pound per1k, do u recommend adding the 24-0-11 also?
The 24-0-11 has both straight Urea and poly coated Urea - it's a blend of quick and slow release. I prefer to use AMS as a quick release and spoon feed for my nitrogen source. Other nutrient levels in your soil might dictate you need different products/nutrients than what I need in mine. Frequency of application and rates all depend on your growth potential, turf type, desire for how often you want to be out in the lawn,... long story short, it's up to you what you want to do and how you want to do it 😀
@The Lawn Mentor I have cool season tttf, I mow every 2-3 days, grass is full and lush , weed free, good color,
Ever done a soil test?
Your grass only needs 1-3 lbs of nitrogen a growing season. Put down no more than 1 lb of nitrogen per application up to 3 times a year or .5 lb up to 6 times a year.
I've got good P and K slightly alkaline soil and a bunch of Poa Triv. Gonna work the liquid fert and Tenacity until it comes back around. Who's got Velocity?
Velocity?
$24.99 at my local farm store

Bro are you even aware that groundwater has about the same amount of arsenic as Milorganite? Like literally if you buy any soil it has arsenic. You clearly don’t know much about this topic just stop it’s embarrassing.
That’s not the point. The point is people treat this stuff like gold and like it fixes all problems when in reality it’s flawed
Also please learn the reason to use immediate release iron vs slow release iron like you find in organic fertilizers. Go apply that immediate release on your lawn in summer - I’ll wait. 😂
That actually wasn’t your point - you make quite a big deal out of the arsenic in it which is silly since arsenic is all over in nature and is a very organic material that is irrelevant within safe limits. That’s not a “flaw” it’s just nature. And organic vs synthetic fertilizers yes one works faster, that one can also burn your lawn which milorganite does not even when applied heavily during a heat wave and drought.
If you’re worried about burning your lawn with synthetic fertilizer, then you’re lazy enough to not care about learning how to make proper application. Burning happens because of the applicator. I’m proper application. And at that rate, you shouldn’t be messing with stuff in your lawn anyways
Great info my friend. That Mili crap is so overrated.
Thanks for the support bro!!!!
I agree on Milo except why add synthetic fertilizers that poison the soil too? Better using organic fertilizers and soil ammendment. I use MicroLife products.

Milo is human waste biproducts. So you are putting human poop on your lawn.
“It’s poop again!!!”
Chocolate and plenty vegetables have heavy metals in them too. Almost anything that's natural has heavy metals and the tiny amounts in milo is safe. Fertilizing with nothing but fast release isn't ideal. You need some slow release unless you're spoon feeding the lawn / fertilizing frequently in small amounts. But I agree there's too much phosphorous in Milo. People need to get soil tests to make sure they can even handle the phosphorous in it. It's also very expensive as others have pointed out. Most "organic" - though not sure milo is still entirely organic - sources of fertilizer are pretty costly these days. As for humic... meh. I haven't seen any studies not sponsored by the companies that make the products that show humic does much of anything compared to what you'll see from fertilizers. Agricultural studies did not find greater yield from humic compared to modest yield increases from fertilizers. There's a whole lot of unsubstantiated hype around humic though. Here's one article I've read about the topic: aggie-hort.tamu.edu/newsletters/hortupdate/hortupdate_archives/2002/jun02/art4jun.html. Here's probably the best one: forages.tamu.edu/PDF/Alternative.pdf. Maybe it helps a 98 score yard reach a 100 or maybe it does nothing. You certainly don't need humic and it's not cheap.
As for iron, it depends a whole lot on soil PH. Cheap products with iron oxide like Ironite don't work well on high PH soils. There's lots of iron in soil already that's been locked up and rendered useless in forms like iron oxide. No need to add more unless your lawn has a PH around 6 or lower. Above a ph of 6 iron oxide is completely unavailable to lawn grasses. Foliar applications are best for most people. I have no position on the granular vs liquid fertilizer argument other than to say most liquid fertilizers are actually more expensive. I buy what's cheapest and apply it appropriately. For me that's fast release granular sold by Walmart which I apply in moderate amounts more frequently than most given the fast release. Get whatever meets your yards needs and is affordable. I think we can both agree people don't need these golf course fertilizers or [enter name brand product here] these other channels are pushing to get a nice lawn, just keep the yard maintained, watered and healthy and it showed be fine. The Lesco product you mention is fine though the iron sucrate in it suffers from the same problem as the iron oxide in ironite, it requires low PH soil to really work. Most of the green people are seeing is from the nitrogen in those products.
Just leave the grass alone put nothing and it will still grow lol
See, but that’s no fun for me lol
