Not saying my method is the best, and embarrassed to say how long it took me to figure my lawn out... but now I do Scotts 3-way for southern lawns weed/feed/ant (just did this last week). and then late may/early June spread milorganite. I find if I do that I am not chasing my tail the rest of the year. Scotts is expensive, but saves me SO MUCH time...

Absolutely love the videos, my question is i live in Pennsylvania near Philly, (i know I’m a transplant from the NY area GO YANKEES, GIANTS) but on the serious side i had sod put down early last year. What can i put down now to make sure it grows strong and green.

Hey Mark! Thanks for checking out the video! Glad you liked it! & thanks for the question! I'd say you're still a little early to do anything that far north. You don't usually get rocking and rolling until like late April. However, I just checked your soil temperatures and you look a tad unseasonably warm right now. I would still just put down a preemergent in about two weeks and hang off on a fertilizer until probably about a month from now. You really don't want to stimulate a lot of growth while you're still getting a good bit of colder weather ahead. If I were you and you were wanting green now. I'd put down Southern Ag's Chelated Liquid Iron. This should be mixed with a backpack sprayer or hose end sprayer. Granular iron won't do much right now because it's so cold.

Literally about to go scalp my lawn and put down the pre emergent!

    • @cakekomo

After raking all the live oak leaves, afurther examination has revealed it is still too early to scalp. Pre emergent time! Same one you used

@@cakekomoI was gonna say...scalping at these temps probably not need. The granulars will work there way down onto the soil without you have to scalp.
Mow to about 3in and you're fine.

@@fargnbastagethanks for the info! I’m in the south. We are in the low 50s to mid 80s in temps already. Just FYI if that changes anything.
The reason I skipped it was I don’t have a green haze everywhere just yet. I may have been just a little late on the pre emergent.

@@cakekomo I'm in the south as well. We're going to hit the 70s for one day this coming week. I don't know what grass you have, but I have TTTF and have never scalped it. I just cut it down to 3in, and put down the pre-emergent and insecticide.
This week I'm going to hit it with some fert and iron. It already looks pretty green, but I think it can be a bit darker. Got a few spots where the tips are yellowed from the bit of snow we got, so the fert should push the growth so I can cut those off.
      Good luck this season!

      Dont scalp Tall fescue. TALL.
Scalping Bermuda or spreading grasses at beginning of season keeps the stolons, where the leaf blades attach, low.
Have you ever mowed green grass short and turns brownish a few days?
Thats the stolons showing. So it helps that if yo mow lower.
Milorganite is best fertilizer imo. its compost, cheap, has every macro & micro nutrient. Cant overuse it. limproves soil health & tilth.
Organic, safe for kids & dogs.
      Most important, it works.

Weedstop by Spectracide, 2,4-D also works well. I've used tenacity in previous videos.

I bought the Andersons Barricade that you suggested. It says to apply it around May 10th for my zone, which is the same zone as you i believe. USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6. That's a month and a half away, yet, you made this video 3 weeks ago putting it down already. Is it because we've had a very mild end of winter? Is it too early?

    • @TheLawnReview
      @TheLawnReview  3 місяці тому +1

Hey man! Thanks for the question! No, definitely not too early. Do you happen to know what your soil temperature is? You can check it online or with a temp probe like I did. 40-50 degrees is fine.

@@TheLawnReview thanks for responding! And yes, I do have a soil thermometer but it's buried in my Carolina Reaper planters in my garage. However, the Internet says it's currently 42.5°F. But it was 55°F a week ago, and 56°F 2 weeks ago. And the air temp is going into the high 50s, low 60s during the day over the next 10 days. Nights in theid 30s. My grass has been growing for a while. If it was June, I would be embarrassed at how tall my grass is. I'm in the PGH, PA area by the way.

I find it alarming that the the place where you sent your soil test to is recommending a fertilizer with potassium and yours is already really high. You should be using something with no phosphorus or potassium according to your results.

    • @TheLawnReview

The Grass Genie organic version is a 10-0-6 which has no phosphorous

@@Sir_Mackthe point is to take the guesswork out of what you apply by getting a soil test. If you don’t like the one he mentioned, use a different service-like state Universities.

@@brianguzman8195 to me, it just puts the legitimacy of these soil test companies into question as it seems they're just trying to sell you a product. Who even knows if that really is his soil sample and not some generic computer generated soil test.
