For snares the Ludwig Supraphonic is the all time go to for studio recording and believe it or not the Pearl Sensitone sounds great.My last recording I did with a punk band I had to retune an entire Ludwig Cavern kit, Supraphonic,and used my own Cymbals.And got to witness Reel to reel tape splicing and editing 1st hand it was so cool.

I record drums in much the same way - Glyn Johns as well as conventional, and then I decide in the mix what works, sometimes a combination. You can use different setups for different parts of the song, like GJ for the verse and wide modern for the chorus, and perhaps just the front kick and overhead for a retro mono vibe in the bridge. Glyn Johns works great when the drummer plays with lots of dynamics, like jazz drummers often do, you get a better blend of how they hear the drums. Great video, thanks Manny!

Great info Manny. I'm gonna give the floor room mic technique a try with my pair of Oktava MK-012's with the omni capsules -- also, you mentioned Stager mics out of Nashville. I have a pair of their SR-2N ribbon mics and have been using them as overheads for a few sessions. Really great if you have lower ceiling in your room (like mine) to round off the highs from the cymbals and they just have a really nice smokey phatness to them. And if you need more topend they take eq really well. Thanks again for taking the time to impart your wealth of knowledge -- much appreciated.
