Today, producer Manny Nieto is joining us to share one of his most unique mixing tricks with us!
The trick uses analog techniques in digital form to create HUGE kick sound.
Add low end to a kick drum without any synthesized low end, such as Pro Tools. This technique doesn't work all the time, but if the tempo, drum kick, and drummer is right, then is sounds AMAZING.
In any program such as Pro Tools, you get the kick drum mic and send it to the AUX. In that AUX you use EQ and boost the frequency around 35-40 hertz, and then cut everything above that. So basically, that kick drum is unusable.
Then, you duplicate that AUX with the same EQ with the original kick drum, so that it is now going out of 2 Auxiliaries. Then, send the second AUX back into the first. This essentially sends a feedback loop on the EQ, and if you raise it loud enough it will have a loud "hum" sound.
As the driving force of the group Distortion Felix, Manny Nieto got bit by the recording bug after working with recordist Steve Albini on their I'm An Athlete album in 1999. Manny quickly built a studio in East Los Angeles, Manny's Estudio International, and soon bands like Chokebore, The Breeders, Vaz, Health, Trash Talk, and even Los Lobos, were tracking records there.
But a decade on, something snapped in the head of Manny Nieto, and soon he was off on a recording odyssey that took him to China and Southeast Asia, including the cities of Singapore, Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau, Chengdu - even venturing into New Zealand for sessions.
Along the way he recorded some of the best acts that you may have never heard, like Pairs, Poubelle International, Reign Lee, UNiXX, Boys Climbing Ropes, Snapline, Forget the G, Proximity Butterfly, Hedgehog, Chui Wan, Cheating Sons, In Each hand a Cutlass, and Obedient Wives Club.

Well, that definitely worked. I followed along in Reaper with a random kick and it works flawlessly. I use multiple plugins on a kick sometimes. This is an awesome trick!

just tried this and it worked a treat. pretty interesting how the shape/Q of the boost affects the tone of the self oscillation. sounds really weird and woofy when you solo it but mixed in behind the original kick it sounds absolutely massive, especially going to tape. thanks manny for sharing!

If I've understood this technique correctly I think you can achieve something similar with fab filters Saturn using the feedback on that. Really cool technique - those drums sound beautiful!

Interesting technique. I learned a similar technique using a gate and a low frequency sine wave way back in the day when DAWs were in their infancy and drum sample replacement was not as prevalent as it is now. I imagine a gate could be used with this technique as well if needed. I’ll have to play with it a bit. Thanks!

That is a good trick! Manny references Steve Albini a lot . Kinda demands for a special with Manny and Steve, doesn't it? One day maybe .. Btw. This is pretty much in the same vein what Mark Rubel did with his Bottle Trick . Cutting the High-end with a resonant Filter and than feed that channel into itself for self-oscillation. Just nice . The Cats spilling the beans on this channel.

This is a wild trick! Two sends off the kick, each got the same 40hz bump and a LPF, 2nd send feeds back into the 1st send. Definitely thumps, will save as a channel strip preset. Thanks!

Manny, could you please say Hi to Mark Loya and Ric Reyes from the band Califas (1983/84). I used to jam with them in Commerce, Ca. '83. I learned a lot from them and other musicians who used to jam at the Reyes jam room back then. Maybe you were one of them. They all used to talk about the Music Academy Ric went to. They would probably remember me as the "Australian Guy" who pronounced 'weird' "Really weird!". (P.S. this msg is an accidental repeat from my comment on the "punk Mixing" video I watched after. Im having a hard time following the signal flow. We following the Bus17 signal, coming from the Kick Send, right? Bus17 is going into Aux1 and Aux2. Aux1 also gets a send to Bus17, which is on the input for Aux1 and Aux2, feeding the signal to Aux2 ánd back into Aux1, creating a feedback loop to itself? And then from Aux2 feeding back into Aux1. So there are 2 feedback loops going on for Aux1?
Sorry in advance for what may be a dumb question, but what is the signal path for this? Is it running both the original kick and aux. 2 through Aux. 1 and then to the master bus? I just really want to understand the flow, it sounds amazing. Thank you!

You can really hear Albini’s influence, very similar drum sound to Nirvana’s “In Utero”
Well hard to get away from those tough tones ;) he did show me how to record personally so yeah his influence very noticeable. His love of mics did rub off.. thanks for sharing .

The kick sounded more natural and clean with out the feedback loop “boost” (Clean, natural, punchy vs muddy, distorted, dirty) it’s all personal preference however. The kick sounds like it was recorded very well at the source! 😎
Oh yeah, he's very talented. But absolutely, it's for taste (I loved the original sound too) and works well with this music for sure. It just opens up a lot more creative ideas to bring over an analog trick as a digital hack.

Weird. I'm in bed, so I'm just listening on my little bedroom stereo. It does have a subwoofer, though. When he put the 35hz auxes in, I actually lost a little low end, as though there was some phase cancellation. Maybe it's the position of the sub relative to my ears. 🤔

it may sound like a big boost in relative isolation but when this is used in a dense mix with lots of tracks using the 30 hz area it's gonna lose impact and create some masking. there are better ways to make a kick pop out, such as change pitch, add samples, side-chain competing frequencies and these are just a few off the top of my head.

@@Producelikeapro not sure how often you work with sampled kicks, but do you find them bass heavy? Most the kicks I have from sample packs always feel too much. I end up cutting and low shelving a lot.

Didn't work for me. As soon as I tried to raise the level of the send the first aux channel shot up to 755 db. I'm not sure how the routing goes because I'm only really familiar with Logic.
You it’s a crazy gag and that happens to me . Using AUx I have super low and muted . As I raise it then u adjust. Ore the aux fader not send

this guy is the SHIT. so this also kinda delays the sub build up with the feedback loop, right? Something so satisfying about the sub following the attack, also saves headroom.

You know that was on playback of a massive mix and sometimes HD rig video slightly off so yeah looks worse then it is delayed vibe visual.

Sounds like a good little trick to use in the studio on some slow kick drum parts, but I wouldn't want to use it throughout an entire song. I wonder how this would translate to a live concert mix?

I’m not really clear on why you’re duplicating the aux, when the first one has Bus 17 set as an input, and you are sending that signal post eq again to Bus 17, thus already creating a feedback loop that will make the EQ oscillate.. what am I missing?

Alessandro, in theory Raw Kick sent Aux1w/ EQ bump all highs cut then sent to Aux2 ditto eq then Aux2 is sent back to Aux 1 for a party of Low end BYOB ;)

the problem with this is you are putting a lot of energy into a frequency so low that so many people can't even hear. I had trouble hearing it on earbuds. You can't boost every frequency at the same time and if everything is loud, nothing is loud. many people can't even hear below 30 hz even on expensive speakers but it does soak up energy like a sponge you could put elsewhere.
This froze my Pro Tools. Think I did something wrong...

it didnt sound good at all. its too much.. i dont have the best monitors but my adam t5v are very good for my mixing and shit, that was too much, its annoying. the point in having good monitors is to make mixes that sound good on anything. nothing sounds good on little cheap stereos or laptop speakers but still, a good normal hifi or studio monitors should do the job in having a good listen to a song.
How could you possibly judge low-end by using 5 inches speakers?
How's your room? You can't take just judge something as subjective as mixing as "wrong" if you are using budget monitors in what is likely not an acoustically treated room. I mix in a small sub 150sqft room with a null around 60hz so I used both my reference headphones when checking this out. I use jbl 5 inch monitors myself so headphones are essential in this space for detailed listening. This isn't squeaky clean stuff the aesthetic of this music calls for a fat bombastic crunchy drum set. Work on understanding context and aesthetic of mixes and don't just use your monitors.

Everybody has their own taste. This totally sounded like a band that can use some wrongness and make it sound great. Heck, I listened to this vid on Skullcandy earbuds and I could hear the effect. It's easy to see how some people might not like it.. but that's why we all do things differently. One man's muddy garbage is another man's life changing moment.
This is the beauty of recording! There is no real wrong way or right regarding sounds. Good Luck and i do wish you all the success making killer records ;)

It was literally on Steve Albini's Mix With The Masters lecture and documented elsewhere.... Albini has never recorded and mixed a band with Samples unless the band actually used a drum machine as part of their sound. You can take your humble opinion and do what you suggested to Manny :)
