Hi Kayla. I'm a new subscriber. I want you to know that you are a youtube gem when it comes to career advice and even deciding on a major. My daughter is a student in Florida like you were. She's going into her junior year in high school as a full time dual enrollment student so we are narrowing down her majors so she can complete her prerequisites for her major and graduate with her AA so that she can save 2 years of college tuition. She will also be going in state so bright futures can handle the next 2 years which hopefully will be in a 3/2 program so that part of her masters is also covered. We've narrowed down to industrial engineering undergrad, finance masters or accounting undergrad finance or information systems masters, CPA path. She has the brilliance and natural ability for the engineering path but may find her self lonely and isolated in the major and extremely male dominated environments. I think accounting path will possibly put her in environments that fit her personality and needs as a human being. She's a very methodical and rule abiding type but she needs lots of social interaction. Your work is what you mainly do with your life so it needs to satisfy other needs besides prestige. Do you have any thoughts you can share?
Thank you for subscribing and another wonderful compliment. If she is a very methodical and rule abiding type I could imagine her loving accounting. Depending on what accounting role she were to take and the company, there could be varying levels of social interaction. Same could be said about various engineering opportunities. A lot of times in professional settings, you are in meetings 50% of the work day and doing actual work the other 50%. But yes engineering is very male dominated, so is finance. Accounting definitely has more ladies in it, if she would feel more comfortable in a setting with more females.... I think at the end of the day she should go after whatever she is most passionate about, learn as much as possible, and than try her hardest to find a work environment that meets her needs as a person.
