HOW TO: Introduce and Bond Guinea Pigs! | Squeak Dreams

  • Guinea pigs are best kept in pairs or small groups. This means people usually end up having to introduce and integrate new guinea pigs into an existing herd. This video covers the basics of introducing guinea pigs, plus what behaviours are okay and which ones are not so okay! With examples, as I introduce Willow and Lyra to Twiglet.
We are BACK on UA-cam in 2020!
MY LATEST VIDEO! 6 things you didn't know would happen before you got guinea pigs! Check it out here: • Guinea Pig Expectation...
Before adopting one or more new guinea pigs to join a single piggie or herd:
Be 100% confident of the sex. Keep to same sex groups or guinea pigs which have been spayed/neutered.
Quarantine new guinea pigs to eliminate the risk of spreading parasites or illnesses (unless from a rescue or responsible trusted breeder). For example, guinea pigs bought from pet shops are highly likely to have mites, and treated multiple piggies can be expensive!
If increasing numbers, extend the cage size to provide enough room for the herd.
    When introducing/bonding guinea pigs:
Set up a large pen on neutral territory with hay, open style beds/houses and veggies. Make sure there is no chance of a submissive piggie being trapped by a more dominant one (no hidey houses with just one small entrance/exit). Supervise them closely for the next few hours.
You can also bath the guinea pigs beforehand or try to rub their scent on each other.
Familiarise yourselves with dominance behaviours and which ones should concern you. In general, rumble strutting, quiet teeth chattering (not prolonged or too loud), head raising, sniffing, nipping (quick and not causing any injury) and ignoring each other are normal.
Watch carefully if you see any loud and prolonged teeth chattering, yawning, "huffing", wide open mouths (i.e getting ready to lunge), lunging, fighting. You may see these behaviours from the guinea pig that wants to be dominant, the other guinea pig/s should back down (run away). If they don't - fighting could be imminent! If they begin to fight throw a towel over them to break the fight up. Check for any injuries straight away.
Dominance behaviours, even if they don't lead to fighting, can be scary for us - but try and hold back intervening unless you are sure they are about to fight/hurt each other. It's very important to give them chance to set up the hierarchy. Unfortunately, not all introductions will be successful - make sure you have thought through the options if they cannot live together.

I introduced my two boys to two girls a few days ago and it went quite well. With all the naysayers wagging their fingers reproachfully I was pleasantly surprised at how well they're all getting a long. It's only been a few days, so I don't know whether it will last, but it's a promising start.

We currently have one guinea pig, and I know it's much better to have at least 2, but I'm scared to death that they're gonna fight, or end up fighting, or injuring each other while we're out, or something. Im really sad, because I don't want her to be unhappy, but I'm scared that if I get her a roommate, that it won't work out well.... 😥

Yumi Arigama don't worry, they should have one, and it's very rare if they won't get along, it's like someone is alone, and they can't understand what you say

I've had my one guinea pig (pebbles) for almost fours years. Over this past weekend I actually inherited two guinea pigs from a family member that moved and couldn't keep them. I took them in since they are both females and so is mine. The pair is very well bonded and I believe have been with each other since babies. Pebbles, has been with other pigs in the past. I originally bought pebbles with another baby an abyssinian named misty. Tragically she was killed by a cat that got into their cage. Pebbles survived and in the weeks that followed was very depressed. So I went out and got another pig. The pig I brought home was very dominant and often beat her up. After about three months I gave her away. Since then which has been over a year pebbles has lived alone and happy. Now I want my new pigs and her to get along. So I did what you did in the video. Started out great after the vegetables were gone it got really ugly pebbles went on the attack. I broke it up a few times once getting bit really bad. After 6 hours she still was on the attack. The other pigs were definitely submitted and frozen stiff in their corners. I feel so bad and I want them all to live together. Do you have any other methods or advice. I ordered a huge cnc cage and it's coming in the mail soon my wish is that they all can live together. Please any advice will help and is greatly appreciated!!

My trio got introduced quite awkwardly because after I had quarantined my new piggy Luna we put my duo’s and her cage next to each other. About the 2nd day of having their cages next to each other I came down to check on them and Luna somehow was in my duo’s cage 😅 I checked with my family to make sure they didn’t put her in there ( they thought I was pranking them ). No one had put her in my duo’s cage so we got her out of their cage and put her back in her cage. We then saw her trying to squeeze through the c&c grids (she’s a baby) and we knew exactly how she had gotten in my duo’s cage. After that we just decided to slowly introduce them and now they are living in a massive cage together with very minor dominance issues. (I always watch them closely when I can)

I had 2 guinea pigs, both female, and unfortunately a couple weeks ago one of my guinea pigs got sick and passed away, now my guinea pig who he still here she has started biting everything and everyone, runs around her cage and cries for attention, so my mom and I have decided that would be our best option to help her stop feeling lonely, im just scared of the possibility of fighting

I have 2 female piggies who are about 1 and a half years old and I just got another piggie yesterday and she was just barley weaned from her mom one of my piggies is very chill and the other seems pretty dominant to the other but yesterday after I brought the new pig home I did let my new pig take a brief look at them and my older pigs seemed very excited so hopefully the bonding goes well and I will be bonding on spring break

I am glad things are getting better and I hope they can live together again. I have bonded several groups over the years and it has always gone well but that was probably luck. 😀 My current group of 5 girls consist of a sow, her 2 adult babies, her sister and an unrelated adult sow. The 4 were living as a family group and I added the single one with absolutely no drama and that did surprise me. Good luck!

Our pigs fought when we first put them together. One got a nasty cut on his lip too, but once it happened the one who got bit accepted that the other was dominant. They never fought again and were best friends until the end. :( We lost our beloved Vincent yesterday and are going piggy dating tomorrow for his younger brother Warren who is pining for his brother. :( I hope he finds a new friend.

We have a skinny pig that has been with us for about a month. Last night we brought home another piggy in the obvious hope that they will bond (they are both males, about 5 or 6 months old). We introduced them in a run that we made out of c&c pieces and lined with comfy fleece and put a nice pile of hay in the middle. It seemed to go great at first...Pip (skinny) was thrilled to have someone to hang out with a popcorned all over, they did the usual rear sniffing and chased each other around a little, even had some hay breaks. So we figured they were doing well and moved them to Pip's cage...it was like world war III! They tussled and scrapped until Pip ended up with a little blood from a scratch, then each took a side of the cage as their own. Pip seemed really scared, he stayed in the same exact place for a couple of hours, not wanting to move at all! As soon as Pop (new piggy) came near him they would scrap again. We ended up splitting the cage for now and each side has their own food, water, hidies, etc. I think tonight we will try them in the playpen again for a longer time and try it again in the cage. Maybe it will just take some time for them to be in the same smaller space? Any tips for us? If it doesn't work we will take Pop back and try a different piggy (which is tricky because we don't have a guinea pig rescue), but we want to give him a decent chance before we do!

My guinea pig has been living alone for a year, this is because when I bought her she was about 3 weeks old and very injured, she had cuts all over her and missing fur. I just never got around to getting her a sister. Now I'm looking to get another female but I don't know if my guinea will adjust to having another around. Even when I bought my guinea she was alone. She's very healthy and happy as a single guinea can be. How do I go about choosing her new friend and introducing them?

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  7 років тому +3

Awh well done for giving her a loving home! I would try and get a young female piggie, from a rescue if possible. Introduce them on neutral territory, monitor them for a good few hours, clean out the cage thoroughly and put them in together (make sure the cage is big enough for two pigs), with a young female there shouldn't be any dominance issues.

My piggie was a Craigslist rescue. The lady who had her didn't know what to feed her and she was feeding her fruits and veggies everyday and she had a salt wheel in her cage. The piggie is super supe sweet. I can tell she hasn't had any company because she'll try to groom your arm, but will bite way too hard. My mom's trying to learn how to introduce another piggie so this'll be really helpful :)

I have a female that is about 1 1/2 years old, she’s been in a cage alone pretty much her entire life, because the female I rescued to bond her with when she was a baby, was so aggressive with her. I was surprised because the rescue was a mother, she was about 3, and came from a large group of guineas of all ages. So, I figured they would be fine. Absolutely not. The rescue pig often attacked my little Minnie. However, I kept trying until the attack was so bad that blood was unfortunately drawn on Minnie. I housed them next to one another, so they wouldn’t be completely alone, but they even tried to fight through the cages often times. My sweet rescue piggy recently passed away from cancer. So, I got another little female. And I was hopeful Minnie wouldn’t have to live alone. The new little one is so lovable and so sweet, also wild and crazy. I’ve quarantined her, and tried to start the bonding with her and Minnie. However, it went awful right from the start. Minnie went right for the attack. Without warning, nothing! She just lunged at her. And she’s quite big now compared to a small little one. I had them in a large neutral open area, lots of food and hay, no closed hideys, and honestly they were fine until they found one another. I dont want to just give up. But I’m so scared now. She wasn’t teeth chattering, no noises were made. The little one just walked by her to check her out, and she was instantly aggressive, lunged at her in full on fight mode. I’m so thankful I had a blanket. Could it be because she’s never lived with another Guinea pig? I’m so bummed. And terrified to try again. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do, or what I could try. It’s very frustrating. And I don’t want my little one to end up alone, like Minnie did.

My two boys Zorro and Diego go through stages of fighting, to being somewhat okay with each other. They are separated right now as they had quite a big fight a couple of hours ago resulting in one of diegos nails being ripped off (didnt check Zorro for injuries as he seemed okay and Diego had visible blood marks left on the blankets I was more focussed on helping him out in the moment). Zorro tends to be the more dominant piggy, and Diego likes to challenge that I think as it’s typically Diego who rumblestruts and teethchatters first. I’m not sure what to do- they seem okay when they’re in their pen in the garden, but I’m not really sure what goes down out there as I leave them out there for a while (secure playpen). They are separated with a wired playpen in the middle just cutting off the 6x2.5 inch enclosure into 2. I really don’t want to keep them separated as them looking through the bars makes me sad, but quite clearly me letting them go near each other during the aggression caused the fight. This is the first time blood has been drawn. They can still see each other through the bars which makes me feel better about their mental health but I just want to do what’s right for them

Such a helpful and hopeful video. We have 2 boys that we’re doing fine. We thought we properly introduced our new boy but soon after, our oldest piggie started attacking his “friend” and the newbie picked on the same piggie. Now we have them all separated as the bullied piggie is missing part of his ear 😣😢 Not sure if we can eventually, slowly do what you’ve done and have better results. Will be rewatching this many times.

You can introduce a baby to an adult.it all depends on the piggie and thier personality.as long as you don't put him in the others cage.. you have to do it on nutral common ground

    • @eldritchm3ow
      @eldritchm3ow 5 років тому

Mm introducing adults to babies honestly depends on your piggies personality. My nans guinea pig used to be with two other ones but they started fighting. So my nan bought a baby piggy and introduced it to the other one and he pretty much adopted the baby as his kid. He's super sweet and they get along really well. (The baby is an adult now and they're still best friends)

I have 2 males. Teddy, I have had for over 3 yrs. I also had a semi long haired male, but that died 10 months after I had got them both. I waited to get a another friend for Teddy, then. Last year I got a baby male. I named Nicky, they were okay together for. about 3 months, then started fighting and biting each other. So now they set side by side. I tried to put them together one other time, and Nicky bit Teddy for no reason. So I keep them separate.

Would it be ok to keep 2 guinea pigs (both females) not neutered, and that one would be older( I'm just confused, whether I should buy my guinea pig a friend or not, same to my bunny, he's a male, he's not neutered, I don't like neutering my pets, I don't think that two male bunnies would be friends, tho)

Panda Games make sure their both neutered and spaded if they don’t you’ll have babies for sure. Over all it should be fine but be careful males get territorial over females. Do your research before just in case!😊

Panda Games then don’t get them neutered, you’ll have to do research I’ve never breed guinea pigs before. They can have 1-3 guinea pigs normally just keep that in mind. :)

Thank you so much for the video! I have two female guinea pigs. My mom brought her female guinea pig over to visit and since then our two have fought. We’ve found 4 scars on one of the Guinea pigs, so we’ve separated them. When we put them together on a neutral place they chatter and we have to break them up. Do we just keep doing what we’re doing? Would bringing in a third be better? Help!

i have 2 old boars (about 5 or 6 yrs old) and they are well bonded (hans and christoff). one of them is the dominant one but he cant be bothered showing off all the time. i also have 2 boars that are 6 months and they haven't figured out yet who is top dog (gingy and mister nilson). usually gingy is submissive but tries to be boss too sometimes. i would like to introduce the two pairs to each other but am afraid that the young boars might cause trouble. at the moment the old boars are free range in the lounge (on a cage liner but do not walk of it) and the young boars are in a cage of which on side is close to the old boars. when the old boars come to the cage to say hello both young ones get upset with each other (teeth clattering, strutting, mounting etc) and the old ones go back minding their own business. any advise? keep the 2 pairs seperated and wait till the young ones passed their puberty? thnx

I actually had a question about this squeaky dreams. I lost one of my elder piggies a few months back (she was 6) and that left me with 2 piggies. I recently got another Piggie and tried to introduce them. Ive been successful in the past but this time all 3 of my piggies started fighting really bad. They were lunging at each other, even throwing a blanket over them didn't help. It took me a few minutes just to get control of everything. when I removed the new Piggie the 2 I've had and has been together for a few years now were so aggravated they started fighting. well I got them back together a few hours later and they are fine now, but now I'm scared to even try to introduce them all again. right now I have them side by side with a divider separating the cages, and even that doesn't work. they will start teeth chattering at each other and jumping around. so I have a blanket over the divider separating them just to keep them calm. it is working for now but do you have any suggestions bc this is the worst I've seen piggies fight and really scared to try again. and it's crazy bc my new Piggie who I named "princess Leia" is such a sweet and tame Piggie. she loves to be petted and will nudge her head up just for you to pet her. I swear she is part dog bc she is the tamest Piggie I've seen. lol. anyways can you help? love your videos btw. they help me so much with my piggies:)

Does anyone have any tips for how I might introduce two bonded pairs of boars to one another? I’m adopting another bonded pair and buying another c&c cage for them, separate, but I’d love to make it so they have two levels for four boars instead and have them all live together… BUT I don’t know how I could introduce two pairs of boys, should I do it individually or together? I’m lost on this… or should I skip it all together and keep them separate?

    HELP!
So in september i got two guinea pigs both females and they got along great together. In january one of the guinea pigs, nutmeg, injured her eye and had to be separated. they would regularly have breakfast together since i didnt want them to feel lonely or forget each other. But nutmeg had continuous follow up appointments on her eye and caused her to become very aggravated to the other guinea pig, paprika, and even with me. i had to stop the breakfast times together because nutmeg would get into fights with paprika. Paprika was originally the submissive one but it has been 2 months since they've lived together and she has gained her down sense of dominance. It's like neither is willing to be the submissive one. Nutmeg is doing better now, although she will never regain her full eye sight again. Your video was the only video that was semi-related to mine and i just really dont know what to do. should i try the bath? should i just keep them separate? i have them in C&C Cages but i would build a 6x2 and add grids right in the middle so in a sense they are sharing a cage but living separately. please help :(

hey!! I know this is really late to when the video was posted, but I have a question if anyone knows what to do. I got a skinny pig yesterday, and he has no hair. I already had 2, rooster and Warbucks. Warbucks is super spunky, and he was the dominate one. I have had them for about a year, and it only took rooster and warbucks a little time because rooster is very submissive. Our new pig, I have learned, is smaller than our other ones but he doesnt back down from a fight at all, which resulted in a cut on his nose the first time they met. They are separated with a cage wall right now, so they can still sniff and talk. Rooster and Warbucks are on the same side, while our new one is separated from them. Am i doing the right thing? What’s the next step? I need help!!
thanks for reading btw Ik it was super long lol

i had to separate my guinea pigs for 7 days, their cages were next to each other and they saw each other during ground times but when i put them in the same cage, they had a crazy figjt which ended the non-dominit guinea pig shake in fear. they had horrible fights whenever i tried to introduce them again and again. they were never best friends but they could live together. now they can't so i separated them. after a couple of days, i'll try again but i'm sad my boys just can't get along

I am attempting to bond an older female piggy (Jewels) with a young female (Tottie) everything looks great when they are both in a neutral area (lots of licking from the older piggy, sniffing bums, and happy squeaking while eating together) the same goes for when they are in the common area of the cage but the bummer part is when Tottie tries to go inside the pigloo with Jewels. Jewels chatters her teeth and chases Tottie out, at one point she pulled out a small tuft of Tot's hair out. Now Tot seems frightened of Jewels and wont allow her to come close. I have set up separate pigloos for them both but the fear still continues on Tot's part. Is this just because she is a baby? has anyone else experienced this?

I have their cages beside each other and last night when the baby smelled my adult she started popcorning and wheeking. My adult came out of her hidey hole and listened but went back to bed. So should I try and bond them? Also is a cage 48in×24in big enough for them. I plan to get another cage the same size and put them together. So they can have more room to run. I also make my bathroom up as a run for them so they can have a few hours of out of the cage exercise a day.
