      Thank you, I’m glad you think so! Barranquilla is a cool city, very laid back in comparison to other big colombian cities. and yes people have a bad perception of Colombia, but that being said, many tourists need to smarten up - especially in Medellin.

    Santorini island, in Greece, was the main inspiration for the architecture of La Aldea Doradal. This Colombian village is part of the township of Doradal, in the municipality of Puerto Triunfo, Antioquia. ‘Colombia’s Santorini’ is located 4 hours away from Bogota, Colombia and three hours from Medellín. It was built in 1980. Pablo Escobar, the famous drug lord, owned at least one house in the village. There are even rumors of Escobar sending an architect scout to Santorini to pick up on some local Greek elements to replicate in Doradal. Doradal is mostly known for Pablo Escobar's luxurious estate, Hacienda Napoles which is located 1 kilometer away from Santorini. The estate included a Spanish colonial house, a sculpture park, and a complete zoo that included many kinds of animals from different continents such as antelope, elephants, exotic birds, giraffes, hippopotamuses, ostriches, and ponies. The ranch also boasted a large collection of old and luxury cars and bikes, a private airport, a bullring, and even a kart-racing track. 40 years ago Colombia's Santorini was in full bloom. Large parties and concerts were held in the square. Most of the cabins were summer homes for families from Medellín and Bogotá. Later, the region was hit by drug trafficking and was abandoned for many years. It wasn’t until 2005 that things started to get back on track, with people moving back to La Aldea and rejuvenating the village.

    • @jonathanells
      @jonathanells  7 місяців тому

      It really is- and this is Airbnb prices, which are much higher. If you get a VISA to live here and rent a place you have to furnish, you can find places much much cheaper than $850. But FYI prices are going up here due to the influx of tourists leaving Medellin for here.

I did visit Panama to last December to scout it as a potential retirement destination. I plan to visit a few locations in Colombia this year. Overall I am scouting potential retirement destinations in Panama, Colombia, and Brazil. The United States is becoming cost prohibitive to retire in.

    • @jonathanells
      @jonathanells  Місяць тому

      I get it about the prices - Canada is even worse! Colombia is WAY cheaper than Panama. I won’t consider Panama because I don’t think it’s as beautiful and because it’s the 2nd or 3rd most costly Latin country and that tanks the value for me 🤷🏻‍♂️

    A very good friend went to Barranquilla 2 months ago .. was a victim of armed robbery , they followed him after he left the airport , drove the taxi off the street and put a gun to his face ,.stole his passport, cash , ect. Be very careful

      Wow that is crazy, sorry to hear for your friend. I had fear of that happening but not from another car, from the taxi himself. I had an Uber from the airport charge me 220,000 COP for the trip when it was supposed to be 45,000 COP. I disputed it with Uber and got my money back. I haven’t been robbed yet and maybe I’m lucky but I do feel Barranquilla in general is a bit better than other areas and cities in colombia for this.

      Never have been robbed. Other than these videos I’m super cautious and live a generally simple lifestyle and rarely go out at night. If you go out at night your chance go wayyyy up

    Which colmian cities have beautiful colorful homes and buildings? Any?
    Don't like bland blah colorless architecture.

      @jonathanells  Місяць тому

      You’re looking in the wrong country. Barranquilla has *some* colorful architecture, but not much. Medellín is beautiful, but if you specifically want colorful homes and buildings, you should be looking at the Carribean islands.

    you’re paying too much for your gym membership, I pay 12 usd in a really good gym

    • @jonathanells
      @jonathanells  7 місяців тому +1

      That’s the price now in Bodytech. It was basically the same in Peru, too. And I got my girlfriend who is Colombian to call and ask prices to make sure I wasn’t getting gringo priced- and it was actually MORE expensive because the prices have gone up. I’m okay with paying more for the gym because it’s close, convenient and not busy like SmartFit. But what I’m not okay paying more on is food, Uber/taxi, and rent. That often happens when they see you’re a tourist. One Uber charged me 200,000 COP for a ride from the airport with my girlfriend that was quoted in the App at 52,000. I of course disputed it and got it refunded - but that’s the shit I hate
