    I had a cat ending up with a condition called stomatitis. This particular cat loved mackerel that is high in vitamin D. My vet said that this is a new decease that wasn't around 20 years ago. What they do is remove all the teeth. I did not want to do that. So I researched online and found that a major cause was to much vitamin D and that there has been foods recalled for containing to much. What I did was stopped feeding her any food with fish and the symptoms actually went away. Vets don't always know what is good for the pets. They recommend all this prescription foods and drastic treatments.

    After feeding only dry Iams cat food to my cat for about a year (ik dont come for me), I learned it wasn’t a great food (not the worst, but far from the best) and so now I feed whole hearted pate canned food mixed with a bit of water for extra hydration and freeze dried duck liver on top, I pay around 35 dollars a month for his food :) no stinky or soft stool, in fact I think the smell has gone down, best decision ive ever made for my cats health!

    I'm a major Wellness respecter. My cat has a ton more energy after eating it compared to the Hills we started with. Her coat is softer, she's friendlier and more playful, and she's lost some weight. She just seems healthier. It's my favorite brand, and the 12.5 ounce cans are easy to work through over the course of 4 or 5 days. Costs about $0.10 more per 3 ounces than your typical Fancy Feast.
    As someone not interested in a raw diet for my cat, it's amazing!
    Also, all of the 12.5 Oz cans are the same price now. This means you can easily buy a Turkey and Salmon can, or a Chicken and herring one, and you'll have a better source for fish oil.

He’s a loving sweet kitty, but carb addicted. I got him off dry & he’s now on fancy feast pate until I find a better wet food for him. He’s 12 pounds & has a belly. Since the raw food isn’t full prey but does include bone and organ meet my question is this: what are the specific supplements one MUST add for it to be complete? The company has a list of suggested supplements, but I hesitate to try it because it’s not defined by NRC as being complete.

    You ROCK Jess and Jericho! Thank you. Rescuer and foster here, lotso feed needs. I do raw and fresh and have researched this for decades, but my fosters are being adopted out to people who may be on a budget and don't know how to do fresh and raw. I have to feed them to prep them for this. Those of us who do rescue often have a great deal of experience and knowledge, but we're adopting out to people who usually don't. At the same time, these animals are going to homes and families where they'll be "⭐🌟The Staaaarrrr!!!🌟⭐" not just part of my pack - and this will be so good for them 💕 Many of our adopters are on a budget. So I have to feed on a budget. I appreciate this so much, thank you for sharing your amazing research and knowledge, along with your generous understanding of differing circumstances. I knew about some of these, Nulo is one of my budget go to's, but many I didn't know. I love your channel, this helps me very much. 💝💖💞

    In October 2020, I rescued a senior torbie I found living under a bush in my front yard. She had been abandoned and was about 12-13 years old at the time.I tried several higher-quality brands of wet food: Nulo, Authority, Nature Variety's Instinct and a brand called I and Love and You. She turned her nose up at each brand. Then she was diagnosed with IBD. The worst IBD my vet said she had seen in her 20 year practice. I now have my senior kitizen on Ziwi Peak wet lamb and the ZP air-dried lamb (which she loves) along with a high quality probiotic and monthly vitamin B12 shots. My cat is doing great on this regimen, which she'll have to be on for the rest of her life, and at times she starts feeling herself and zooms around the house like she's a kitten again.🐱🐈

    Great and informative video! I just came across your content today. I have a 4 y.o long hair tuxedo cat. Adopted him about 5 years ago and found her loves rabbit. I feed him Darwin's raw right now, but recently we were in a housing transition and needed to stay with friends. They were uncomfortable having raw cat food in their fridge and freezer so I had to find an alternative. I found Merrick brand wet cat food and my cat loved it. Although we're in our new home now, and feeding raw again i do keep a case of the canned rabbit around for a "treat" or if I forget to thaw the night before, i have a rescue. What are you thoughts on the Merrick brand wet cat food? He's had all the flavors except beef, but rabbit is his favorite.

  • @dystoniaify
    @dystoniaify 2 роки тому +4

    I have compared to cost of feeding these cheaper wet foods only per the recommended amount for my big cat vs Darwin's Pets raw only, and the cost is about the same. Just something to consider for those considering feeding canned only, the Darwin's Pets or some similar balanced raw might be around the same cost. Another idea is a combo of canned and raw. I'm on SSDI, so I'm poor but after my senior best friend passed away from kidney disease I really researched the cost of raw.

    • @jesscaticles
      @jesscaticles  2 роки тому +4

      Fish can be a great supplement for EPA/DHA. But it is not recommended as the sole protein source for a few reasons. Cats often develop an addiction to fish and this causes picky eating. Many fish also contain thiaminase which destroys b vitamins. The others on this list are better than that brand, and there are far better options than that. But variety is key so use whatever you can!

    • @jesscaticles
      @jesscaticles  2 роки тому +4

      This is a conflicting topic - save money but still want good quality. Unfortunately, you will always pay more for processed food. The cheapest will always be homemade because you control the ingredients and how it's made therefore you have more control over the cost. Homemade is certainly the best because you control the ingredients and how it's made. But it has to be done correctly. I have a full guide on homemade cat food here: ua-cam.com/video/2uM6smRI3A8/v-deo.html&t with cooked recipe options (:

    I currently feed 2 brands with 2 flavors from each. As an example (only can I have handy here lol) I feed Wild Freedom Chicken with Duck. Ingredients being 62% comprising chicken meat, chicken liver and chicken broth, 36% comprising duck meat, duck hearts and duck broth, 2% minerals. It comes out to 2.7% carbs. It costs me €0.74 per day for my tiny cat. (122.3 grams a day).
    I also have their rabbit/chicken flavor with a similar ingredient list and 1.6% carbs. I'm working on getting my other cat fully on that specifically because of the rabbit and low carb content. He's now on Hill's Urinary and that has 30% carbs... yes that's a wet food... I really want him off it, but I remain worried about his health.
    The other brand I have is Rosie's Farm, which is similar in ingredients, but includes salmon oil. Turkey/duck (3.5% carbs) and lamb/chicken (2% carbs) flavors. It is more expensive than Wild Freedom though.
    Cost was definitely a consideration when deciding on which foods we would use. Wet is more expensive than dry. Though Hill's wet is more expensive than these wet foods we picked lol.

    • @jesscaticles
      @jesscaticles  2 роки тому +1

      Oof 30% carbs! I have a page dedicated to urinary care here : www.caticles.com/urinary-care/ - along with veterinary resources on the topic. The most important thing is moisture! So at least he is eating wet food already (:
      Just think about cost like this, if you feed dry food only, he is at a higher risk of becoming blocked. And a urinary blockage is life-threatening. Read through Dr. Lisa Pierson - included in that urinary care link.

    • @Siferiax
      @Siferiax 2 роки тому +1

      @@jesscaticles yes we don't really feel up to raw feeding at this point. It would add unnecessary stress to our family. Considering the ingredient list I find these foods good enough and at an appropriate cost.
      I just find it ridiculous how poor quality and expensive Hill's is lol. The first thing we did after finding your resources is getting our cats on wet food.
      The only thing we still have to figure out is how to handle going on vacation. We would normally bring them somewhere, but we have no control over their diet then. Leaving them at home is frankly not an option. Sky will be in hiding as long as someone else is at our home. So they will not be able to give her food. Just placing down food is also not an option as then Rox will simply eat it instead. We are still thinking on how best do this.

      I cover wellness in this video. But I'd suggest not using the fish flavors (from any brand). Fish can be a great supplement for EPA/DHA. But it is not recommended as the sole protein source for a few reasons. Cats often develop an addiction to fish and this causes picky eating. Many fish also contain thiaminase which destroys b vitamins.

    Hey, I have a couple of questions. How do you feel about grinding up our cat's dry kibbles and adding water to it to make our own homemade wetfood? It's really cost effective for me, and I was curious if this would help my cats similarly to a real wetfood. I know it's going to still have high carbs and because of that it is not as good, but because kibble is cost effective for me, I really don't know if I can get into proper canned wet foods.
    However, I might be able to do this next method. If I bought canned wet food and combined it with my homemade wet, do you think it would add enough nutritional benefits to be worth the cost? Say 75% homemade wet to 25% real canned? It's not much but because moneys not good, it might be the only option I can really do. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
    I have begun grinding up my one cat's kibble and adding water to it, and she has surprisingly really taken to the food so far. She's on about 25% homemade wet to 75% kibbles so far. My other cat not so much but, one out of two is far better than I expected.

    • @jesscaticles
      @jesscaticles  2 роки тому +4

      As long as you aren't leaving the kibble/water mixture out longer than 20 minutes that's fine! The longer it sits out, the higher the risk of bacteria and mold growing. Mixing with some wet food is better than none! So do what you can. You can also add fresh food toppers from the grocery store at around 10% of the total daily intake. Again, some fresh food is better than none (: watch this video for instructions: ua-cam.com/video/zc1eCxKSPjk/v-deo.html
      I'd also suggest thinking about long-term savings when you switch to a low carb food. High carbs can lead to obesity which on its own increases the risk of certain cancers, respiratory issues, diabetes, etc.

      @jesscaticles  2 роки тому

      the wet foods in this video and other videos I have are better. they include liver and also only have meat in the product name, all under the “dinner” rule. it looks like half of canidae’s wet foods are under the “with” rule which would mean less than 25% of the named ingredients. the wet foods that are under “dinner” rule include non meat ingredients. for example chicken and pumpkin recipe woukd mean at least 25% chicken and pumpkin combined. ideally you want meat only in the product name and avoid “with” and “flavor” product names.

I fed him rabbit only wet food from Rawz and Koha for about a month and half and it worked. Now he can eat other proteins. But only wet and raw I feed, no dry food. According to my vet- cats in general have a shorter intestine than other animals but Bengals have an even shorter digestive tract due to their dna lineage and therefore have a sensitive GI system. In the grand scheme of things, maybe not a huge deal. Natural flavor isn't specific because it's kind of "food science product". Take the flavor of beef, say, and find the that make beef taste like beef and come up with something. Sometimes derived from real meat, say, but not necessarily. Doesn't take much, I'd consider it in a flavor enhancer. It's not great--but then again--not horrendous either. There are actual "natural flavors" like nutmeg or vanilla. But wouldn't be in cat food.

  • @whatwouldhousedo5136

    Why is fish oil recommended? Cats do not eat fish in nature. They're not standing on the riverbank snatching fish out of the water. And one of my cats is allergic to fish. Cats in nature would get long-chain fatty acids from the organs (liver, kidneys, heart) of prey, and maybe smaller amounts from the stomach contents, eg mice or birds eating grains that are then already partially digested when the cat eats the viscera.

    I rescued a kitten and she has cost me a small fortune already. I feed her the whole hearted chicken recipe for kittens. I mix it with more expensive kitten food by Wellness Core. The chicken and chicken liver recipe. No carrageenan that I can see. I’ve read it is a carcinogen. She is about 14 weeks old. Out vet doesn’t want her on raw. I asked. This little animal eats like a hog!
