He did it because he needed the challenge and his favorite thing was to tell an opponent what he was going to do and then do it. He said that out loud in an interview once, he said “he gets a charge out of it”
Favorite Bird story? Probably when I went to a Knicks game in 1986. He had a 40 point triple double in about 34 or 35 minutes and the Celtics won by 23 points. In the next day's newspaper, Knicks payers were telling reporters that before the game Bird came into their locker room and told them he was going to drop 40 on them and take himself out of the game in the third quarter. And that's exactly what I remembered happening. LOL.
#1 Larry, #2 Wilt, #3 Bill Russell, and #4 Elgin Baylor. I think he told people for the challenge and because he could. Danny was open and he was a good shooter. If he didn't pick him up is was an easy shot for maybe the best athlete on the Celtics at the time. Don't hate on Worthy, he made his choice and his reasoning is sound. I can't hate on him for being confident in his abilities when that is one of the things I admire in Bird. Call it trash talking or whatever, it was psychological warfare. And it must be an unbelievable high to tell them and follow through. Favorite story? Maybe during the Dream Team when Larry was sitting with Magic and Jordan eating, someone (Sir Charles?) came up to sit with them and Larry said that table was for people with rings. Great reaction.
This explains exactly why Bird was just different and on another level. He told the other team what the play was and where he was going shoot from time and time again, even in big situations. He dared them to try and stop him even though they knew what was coming. By the way, I disagree that Bird was slow, couldn't jump and was unathletic. Watching all these video's it looks like he runs the court pretty well. He could rebound with the best of them and the moves he made looked pretty good to me. How many other NBA players have so many stories about the times they told the other team what they were going to do and then went out and did it? MT. Rushmore - Bird, Magic, Jordan, Wilt
Such a good thing to have people do a mount Rushmore. Would be interesting to see if they are realistic about it or if they will include their favorite player. My favorite player of all time is Bird. Huge Celtics Fan as well here. However, My Mount Rushmore is Magic, Jordan, Kobe, and LeBron.
Onestly in Worthy defense: ball go to Danny Ainge and Danny was another lethal shooter. Defense is in complete rotation so i can understand why he go to Danny. But personally I wouldn't have: if Danny makes the 2, game is tied possession is mine. But "if" Bird hit a 3 (if??)... we are in trouble! Well, not so many trouble if you have Magic in your team.
You said you might be overthinking it, but I think that's why he did it. Those Lakers weren't just athletic, those are Hall of Famers, they had basketball knowledge and wisdom too. He made them overthink it. They knew he was telling them the truth, he always did. People over thought it when they should have been running on their instincts. He took their athleticism out of it and when that happened, they were always just a little too late.
😊😊😊😊 *BIRD, MAGIC, JORDON, & WILT CHAMBERLAIN* 😊😊😊😊 I have always believed his "trash talking" was a self motivation tactic, along with knowing, he could !!!
If Worthy doesn't rotate to Ainge, then Ainge has a clear path to the basket or an easy twelve-to-fifteen footer. He has to rotate to Ainge and hope that Cooper, Magic, and/or Thompson rotates to Bird.
If you look before Larry had the ball it went to Ainge who was also a great shooter. He left him because Ainge could’ve also taken the shot. But instead Ainge sent it to Larry. Either way the shot could’ve been made. Not saying Worthy made the right decision but I understand why he did it.
It's a shame that a "Mt. Rushmore" only has 4 spots, because there are several more players who deserve to be on it. That being said, if I HAVE to narrow it down to 4... Wilt, Larry, Magic, and Jordan.

Bird wasn't greedy alot of players are for themselves bird passed the ball so much he wanted everyone on the team to make it to the hall of fame not just him
I think maybe his choice was to try denying him the ball at all. 🤷🏻♀️. Maybe he thought, as the play developed, that Bird had lied to him? Maybe the person Bird was really testing by telling them the play was himself. The extra pressure amplified his concentration and skill? 🤷🏻♀️ ☘️ Larry Legend game is complex 🙂
Mount Rushmore for me it’s easy Magic & Bird not only because there mentioned in the goat conversations all the time, but because they saved the NBA and I got MJ because he is the goat and took the torch and made the NBA a world sport. You guys can fight over the last spot lol
I feel the "IT" factor is talent, consistancy, gifted beyond belief, and lived the game. It is a different conversation than the GOAT, because the end results may not show up as MoF or trophies. And you can't list them. It's just a list. MJ, Bird, Kobe, Magic, Kareem, and probably others are on this list. It is hard to judge current players to be on the list for I feel it must cover the player's whole body of work. Again, the early players it is hard to judge because I don't have info on them. But it is just a list, so it can be added to at any time.
Mount Rushmore should be both legendary AND historic, not simply the four best ever. It begins with Bill Russell, Magic, Bird, MJ. You can’t find a more comprehensive/complete Mount Rushmore. Less to argue about. Commissioned for a fifth face? Lebron. I have Bird #5. And Russell Top 10. I think this is as objective a view as one can have with something so subjective.
Bird, Kareem, Kobe, and I guess MJ. I'd rather be Magic but we are not talking a team but a Rushmore. I don't like Mike but acknowledge is one of the best. Bill Russell may be one but I am not as familiar with him as the others. But Bird Kobe and Kareem are permanent.
@@HenDawgTV It's like a overplayed song "MJ MJ MJ MJ MJ MJMMJMJJMJ" That was all I heard. I liked Pippin more but I will acknowledge that MJ was a better basketball player. No. But MJ is a great player and did magical things. Hell of a defender. It just something that sets him off with me. I dunno, not as honest. But that's a feeling I have and not facts. All this stuff is kinda subjective at the end. The stats only go so far and people like Bill Russell and Wilt have even less stats (because the didn't collect them) and very little footage so they are often overlooked. I saw a reaction of a Bill Russell dunk and in the grainy image you would have thought it was MJ or Clyde dunking. Maybe this is why I am reacting to reactions, not just Bird but other players that get overlooked because everyone seems to stop at Jordan. Or how everyone thinks Labron is the greatest not realising his stat are so high because he has played for so long. I mean Bird, McHale, Magic and others would have played longer in a heartbeat if they had access to modern medical technology and no touch defense. Sorry, off tangent but this a main reason I am here watching your reactions. I want to see the younger generation that we are not crying and boo hooing but we want you to see it for yourself. Will Bird be better than MJ or Kobe or Durant or whoever in your eyes? Maybe not, but if you place him in your top5/10 I am happy. You saw him, you recognise his talents, and you did not dismiss him. Thanks for the response.
Who’s on your Mt. Rushmore??
Wilt, MJ, Larry, Kareem.
Russell, Wilt, Bird, Michael
Bird, Magic, Kareem, Stockton,
MJ, Larry Joe Bird, Wilt, a lot of dudes possibly 4th (Oscar, Russel, Kobe etc.)
Bird, MJ, Hakeem, Kareem
He did it because he needed the challenge and his favorite thing was to tell an opponent what he was going to do and then do it. He said that out loud in an interview once, he said “he gets a charge out of it”
I might add it was psychologically devastating to opponents. I don’t know how many games he won because he was all up in their heads rent free
Makes sense 💯💯💯
My best guess is Worthy's thinking was "if he gets it, he'll kick it in. My best chance is to get the steal and keep the ball out of his hands."
Rushmore.... Jordan, Wilt, Bird, Magic
Larry said he got a charge (thrill) out of telling the other team what he would do and then pulling it off

I’d live with that from Ainge rather than leaving Bird wide open
