One thing to remember about Bird and his era is that they didn’t come up in the game shooting 3’s as there wasn’t a 3 point line in NCAA when they were coming through. Also, the original 3 point line in the NBA was further out than current line; and yes that does matter!

Larry is in the top 3 players. I grew up in Terre Haute Indiana, went to Indiana State University, and served Larry Bird lunch at the "new" Long John Silvers Seafood shop! He stood at 6' 10" when I saw his "weigh in". Magic said "There will never be another Larry Bird" and I know it's true from watching him since I was 20!! I'm 65 yrs old now and I see Larry's own shots being used by everyone else, TO THIS DAY!! Larry changed basketball for good!!
The Bird's incredibly generous team-play is why he's the GOAT. It took Jordan four years to figure that out.

Btw, Magic has always seemed to be Larry’s fan. Any time they are together you see how Magic lights up around Larry.
They have always been very good friends. I think Magic was really the only one he was ever "nice" too. On the court.

There’s a video that goes over their dynamic and eventual friendship. They’re two wildly different personalities but they’ve got that kind of friendship where they can not talk for a long while randomly see each other and be right back to the best of friends. One of the things that cemented it if I remember correctly was that when Bird heard about Magics HIV he stuck with him and called him where others dropped him. Bird is quiet and humble and not big on public affection but he really did come to care about Magic.

Agreed, but Magic seems to need Larry more than Larry needs Magic. Even way back in College, b4 the big NCAA game, Magic reached out to Larry, & Larry rebuffed Magic. It was Larry that needed to be won over not the other way around, and that commercial shoot at Larry’s mom’s house was the ice breaker.
In today's no defense game...Bird would be a stud. Slow? Yes. Awkward? Yes. But he is 10X smarter than anyone on the court today. Can shoot with anyone today, not even a contest. Anyone who says no never saw him play....talent is talent

His sprint speed was not great. His first steps and hand quickness were lethal and there was no such thing as an off balance shot for him.
Everyone says he was slow and unathletic, couldn't jump, etc. Funny how he always got the job done. In today's game? You are joking, he would destroy them. On top off everything he could do, he was above all else a team player. Put him in a team and he would bring them all up.

I don't know what Bird's greatest ability was, but I would say his ability to utilize his teammates has got to be up there. He flawlessly played to the strengths of guys like Parrish and McHale. He was able to make good players, play like great players. Bird seldom carried his teams to victory, he lead them to victory.

Bird wanted to win first and worry about personal stats later. He could easily have averaged another 6-8 points during his career if he wanted it. His idea of winning involved an unselfish team effort. He’d rather win a game with 26/11/8 instead of 35/5/2.

Michael Cooper was the best defensive player in the NBA. In one of the Celtics-Lakers finals, Bird was wearing him out. After one trip where Bird scored, Cooper looked over at Riley, palms up, and said something.

Jerry West said Bird was as close to perfect as anyone that had ever played the game. What West meant was well rounded. Pure shooter,passer,rebounder,free throws,long range,clutch and helping out on D.

Larry was very special, and I was 16 when he joined the Celtics as a rookie, and I also worked concessions at the Boston Garden.
There is no NBA without the 80's and then Jordan taking it into the 90's.
It was such a great time to really love basketball, and it was a rough game back then.

What's amazing is that all those greats sing the praises of Larry Bird. That should tell you something of his mystic. That man was a fortune teller. Who the fuck tells their opponent the play and then goes and does it? That type of action creates fear into the hearts of men...

Outside of Magic, Larry's toughest customer was definitely Dominique Wilkins! Today Bird would most likely have 33 ppg. 12 reb. 9 asst. And I believe Bird is number 1 all-time. He is only one of five players in history to average at least 20 pts. 10 reb. and 5 asst. per game for his career. He was what we called in baseball a " Five-Tool" player. He could shoot lights-out, he could pass at least as good as Magic, he was a top rebounder, he was a much better defensive player than given credit for, and he was the clutchest player of all-time. Honorable Mention: He was the team leader who made everyone on the team much better.
And he's the only forward to win three consecutive league MVP's. Plus he finished 2nd in MVP voting four times!
Bird says to this day that Michael Cooper was the best defender he played against. But Wilkins was definitely a thorn in his side.

Prime Bird is definitely better than today's LeBron. Matter of fact so was Magic and of course Jordan. Bird was shooting 1.8 threes a game. Almost never.

Larry Bird was a legitimate 6'10" small forward that could eat up smaller defenders in the post or big defenders on the floor. His trash talk was backed up by his play. As James Worthy said "Michael would make you look slow, Bird would make you look stupid."
I was fortunate as a fan to witness the era of Bird/Majic from start to finish and no doubt in my mind that Bird would flourish in today's NBA but the truth is that when it came to rivalries, although they were forever connected since college that was more of a healthy competition while the rivalry was the two teams Lakers and Celtics. And I don't think he ever went into a game focused on one player, he played to beat the whole team. He could absolutely own today's game and he would be able to average as many pts rbs stls assists as he thought his team needed
He took a team that won 29 games, and was a huge part of their 61 wins in his rookie year!
A defensive win share is an attempt to give credit for a win from a defensive standpoint, I’m not sure how it’s calculated but it’s basically a way to give credit for being able to keep the other team from scoring.

Philly and Boston were both in the Atlantic Division. Boston and Philly faced each other in the 80, 81, 82 and 85 ECF. Boston and Philly faced each other 6 times in the regular season. Philly won the 80 ECF 4-1, Boston won 81 4-3, Philly won 82 4-3 and Boston won 85 4-1. In 79-80 Boston won 61 games, Philly won 59 (regular season 3-3), 80-81 both Boston and Philly won 62 games (Regular season 3-3). In 81-82, Boston won 63 and Philly 58 (Boston 4-2 regular season) and in 84-85 Boston won 63 and Philly 58 (Regular season 3-3).

Bird was a great defender he was just so good offensively everyone overlooked it. Jordan gets that treatment sometimes as well.
The 3pt line came into the NBA Larrys rookie season, he learned as he went and ended with a career 37.6% average. I mean the dude could shoot from anywhere he founded the 50/40/90 club.

I think Larry & Dominique had some major battles
Bird would be a monstrous force if he was playing in his prime in the present day NBA. He didn't need to be the most athletic player on the court to dominate games in his heyday and certainly wouldn't need to be one today. His basketball IQ, unselfish play, offensive and defensive skills, and ruthlessly competitive heart to win won him MVPs and championships in the 1980's during one of the most talent-rich eras of NBA history. Bird is the same guy who Jordan couldn't get one over even toward the very end of Bird's career and debilitated back because Bird put in the work to make sure he took those wins. You don't need to have natural athleticism to win... it definitely helps but Bird's basketball IQ ensured he was at the right place and right time on the court to make the right decisions that won games, and he had the skills to pull it off.
Larry's numbers wouldn't change. He'd put up the same no matter what era he played. People need to understand something. In the 70's NCAA basketball was dominated by a select few teams. Such as Michigan St., North Carolina, Kentucky, and UCLA. For a team like Indiana St. to even make the tournament back then, let alone the finals was unheard of. Bird single handedly paved the way for the smaller schools to succeed as the do today. What he did before he even reached the NBA was already legend.

The 2nd biggest challenge to Bird and the Celtics was Dr J and the 76’ers. Some might even say the biggest challenge. Andrew Toney was known as the “Boston Strangler”, in addition to that there was Bobby Jones, Maurice Cheeks and Moses Malone.
If Larry Bird would have been drafted to the Lakers instead of Magic. They would have had a run to rival the 60's Celtics.

One night in the salt palace he had a terrible shooting night in the first half. However he did everything else : passes, rebounds, assists, he made his team better adv they took the lead into halftime.
2nd half he came out and his shot came back and he killed us.
He played the way he did in the first half to get his game back in the second. He understood that his game would come back to him if he just played the game.

As someone who was a young kid growing up during Larry Bird's time with the Celtics, BY FAR the earliest/strongest rivalry (before the Lakers/Magic became the best rivalry) was Dr. J and the Sixers...and it wasn't even close. Milwaukee Bucks were tough, but not the traditional/regional rival that Philly was vs. Boston.
But it wasn't necessarily Dr. J who made Celtics' fans (like myself) VERY nervous; it was guys like Andrew "The Boston Strangler" Toney, who was a terror when he got hot, and got his nickname because of HOW good he was against Boston. Then if those two players weren't scary enough, then there were guys like Moses Malone, Bobby Jones, etc., so those early-to-mid-80s Philly teams were NO JOKE!!

defensive win share takes into account all stats related to defense and how they contributed to a game won through defensive action, so for example in analytics if they say you need 4.8 steals per game to win and 9 defensive rebounds etc and a player is coming up with a larger than average amount of each of those for their team then they get a defensive win share

Bird he just had the higher IQ when it came to the game, if he knew he was having an off night he could motivate the team enough to get the win. He kept the entire team on their toes because you never knew if he was going to shoot it or get some crazy wild pass either at a slow lob or 100 mile an hour fast ball to you.
Points today is kind of a tough question but the reason it’s tough is because of what we know about LB back THEN. An NBA historian is going to point out that Bird had to run a TEAM. He had to make sure everyone was getting their touches. He had friggin prime McHALE he had to feed, too. The 86 team is widely considered one of the greatest TEAMS in NBA history. Bird did that. He had to. He was taking on Magic’s Lakers. If you take out the floor general equation and just make him a post up shooter or a small ball center? He’d tear people apart. But that’s not how Bird played. Bird was a COMPLETE player and mark my words (and everyone else’s): that Celtics team belonged to Bird and Bird alone. With that came responsibilities. He shouldered them. Would he do that in today’s game? I don’t know. Would he HAVE to? Ask THAT question before you make a guess about his scoring in today’s game.

Larry Bird would be #1…….PERIOD. He would be so bored in today’s era, he’d play with his left hand.
Remember that you can’t touch the players today, and if can’t touch him you can’t stop him. The way he plays, you only need a few players that can distract the other team for a moment. He would demoralize the other team, and give the defense fits. They would have to focus so much on him, the other players could just walk to the hoop. He could get 50 anytime, but he would be focusing on breaking the other team’s will. He pioneered the dagger three, breaking hearts was his thing, just ask MJ

One big difference is if you look at4 a guy you get a foul .. back in the day you had to get an elbow in the eye before they'd call a foul. With bird getting as many 'modern' fauls as he got back in the day he'd be taking like 20 free shots a game.. and making them all. Also with the new rules he'd be even more open for easy shots.

Thanks for sharing this and FYI Dr J. was incorrect about Bird's rookie season. Bird went to a 29 win team and with a new coach in Bill Fitch and 1 roster change in ML Carr, Boston won 61 games = the biggest single season improvement in NBA history. Also note the 1996 Spurs with Duncan had a 36 game improvement BUT David Robinson only played in 6 games due to an injury the previous season and Sean Elliott only played in 39 games in the previous season due to injury = so Bird's impact was more of a true measurement. Where does Bird rank all time? It is hard to say because there are so many good players! Where ever you rank Bird, I do believe he should be 1 spot higher than Magic because he was a more complete player. Bird was on 3 all defense teams ( 2nd team) and in 1983 finished tied for 3rd place for the DPOY award. Magic was never on an all defense team. Bird created the 50-40-90 club, did it 2 seasons back to back and if you look at the stats, Bird for 4 seasons = 85,86,87,and 88 averaged 50-40-90 shooting. Magic never had a 50-40-90 season. In their first 9 seasons, Bird finished significantly ahead of Magic in the MVP voting for 8 of those 9 years. Keep up your good work!
