As an American the definition of soul food for me is food that came from African American ancestry, cooked from the soul with love. It's not just a type of food from anyone. It has an endearing ancestry coming from slaves who used what they were allowed to make a meal - as in cheap cuts and undesirable ingredients. They made it an American icon. ❤
Yep this is exactly it and it’s called Soul Food because Soul was used heavily in African American culture in the 50s thru 70s, Soul Music, Soul Man, etc.

How do they go back to the UK and eat their food after eating all this stuff, its going to be so depressing for them…lol. I have been to New Orleans many times and have eaten there. I live in Virginia and I have to admit I cant find food here as good as it is in New Orleans or the South in general. The food is so good there. Some of the places seem like a mom and pop shop and you get misled at first by the look of the place but these places are the best. You feel like your eating at your mother’s house with home cooking. But remember this, once you leave and go home from a week there, dont get on the scale for awhile because you will be heavier and will notice your clothes dont fit the same….lol….the food is just so good but as expected high in calories :)
It's different when you grow up eating certain foods your whole life. They will always be home for you, and taste good to you even if you go out in the world and find better tasting foods. My dad has lived here forever, but he will go back home overseas and eat some things I can barely tolerate the smell, but it reminds him of family and growing up.
Great reaction you guys, we vacationed in New Orleans twice, the first time was didn't know what we were doing but we ventured off on a few tours and along the way we tried food we never had before especially the oysters, gator meat, everything we could get our hands on when we were there in New Orleans, LA. The food we tried there was so new to us, flavorful, rich, and delicious. We visited the second time for the food mainly. I enjoyed your video reaction! Peace. ☮
The South is where it’s at for their spiced Creole goodness is off the chain. Their dessert pastries are next level unique and divine. There’s many more they haven’t found yet in the Great Southern States.
Born and raised in Louisiana and it’s like it’s own country. Very Spanish and French influenced. The accent, the food, the history It’s definitely a very unique place
Texas guy here. When you come to American and Texas and do your BBQ, Tex-Mex, and Buc-ee's thing, you can drive next door to Louisiana and go into a whole different world of food, culture, and accents. Just saying you get more bang for your buck when here.
I second that. I'm like, LA is the only thing you can get to from Texas by car when you visit in less than a day....well, unless you're from West Texas.
Lil Dizzy's is an excellent place, I love their food. Y'all would love some chargrilled oysters from Drago's. They come with a pond of melted butter in each shell with melted parmesan cheese on each chargrilled oyster. They are spectacular.

Cajun food is a great example why American food is so good. It's a fusion of foods brought here from different cultures (sometimes by horrible means..) and made into something new and amazing. And literally everything here aside from Native American cuisine was brought here from another culture.
My gumbo is andoiulli sausage, chicken thighs, and shrimp. Cooked on holy trinity of bell peppers, onion, and celery. Good amount of Cajon seasoning. Add in some rice as a thickener. The only thing that isn't traditional is I also add in 1 jalepeno...extra heat
You two would fit right in here in the States...people would love you guys.😊 Just be prepared for people to ask you questions....because we tend to love to find out where you are from, how long you are here for, or if you are enjoying your time in the USA. 😊
Soul food refers to food that was adapted by the descendants of the US slave trade. You don’t have soul food because it is distinctly tied to African American Southern culture. Some people have tried to say that soul food is good good for the soul but “Soul” in America specifically refers to the black revolution period in the 70s that originated from after civil rights.
What’s good about catfish is it is now farm raised. It is a good tasting fish for a low price thanks to farming. Won’t say it’s on the level of tuna, salmon, or other flavorful fish, but it is good for the price. Gumbo can be had with chicken and sausage or seafood. Know some hunters who make a gumbo with duck they hunted.
When I was a kid in GA, we would pull up beside the lake and tie a line to a tree branch, have a hook on the other end and put chicken gizzard on the hook. Throw it in the water and get the fire going. Then, after a couple hours we check the line and almost always get a giant catfish. Great eatin for everyone and super easy to clean.
Soul food is african american based food. You don't put hot sauce on your rice lol that's crazy and gross. It normally goes on our fried cat fish or red snapper. We fry it in a special seasoned batter. You can put a little on fried chicken and something we make called greens. Very sour and an acquired taste with bacon bits or ham hawks.
If you ever take a visit to New Orleans, I could give a dozen restaurants you need to try. These are just a few, Mother’s, Mr. B’s, Acme Oyster House, Brennan’s, Commander’s Palace,Antoine”s and Frankie and Johnny’s. Hundreds more, but can’t list them all. I’ve eaten at least once at each one of these.
Soul food came out of slavery and hard times afterwards, now it’s a southern staple. Similar story with southern food and BBQ in general. Or if you have something like Mac and cheese, it wasn’t invented here but the way it’s done here is usually different. My family does gumbo cook offs between like 5 or more of us annually 😂 I’m in Houston Tx, I’ll bet money a proper gumbo over rice will be her fav, describing it as soup doesn’t do it Justice
its not that the uk has bad food. america is just more versitile because we are known for immigrants from all around coming here...and of course they all bring thier food. thats my logic anyways
I am from Louisiana born in New Orleans. You would love Gumbo. I am not a big soup person but Gumbo is excellent. Also, if you happen to make it down to the Mississippi Gulf Coast / New Orleans area try BBQ shrimp. Mr. Bs in New Orleans is the best but they do have some places that make a delicious one. Also, don't sleep on PoBoys and Muffulettas. So much good food here, can go all day talking about it
You will love the Gumbo and you can always put it over rice. They are experiencing Cajun spices and the red pepper. Lots of Caribbean as well as Cajun influence in New Orleans. Wonderful to see our British "cousins" enjoying America's diversity of flavors. Come on over and enjoy the good life in your second home! You can get dual British and American passports.
I wanna reiterate what you guys just said. And this is what I tell a lot of my friends that are not from the states whenever they come to the states. I always tell him when you're eating. Try to go to the local eateries. Don't just go to the main big franchises. That maybe your what country doesn't have. Go to the local eateries, cause you're gonna get up more bang for your buck
Soul food is largely African influenced. Africa didn't have most of the ingredients, but Cajun is also Spanish, French, and American based on the available products
Can y'all please react to the rest of the New Orleans food videos that Jolly made ? The others are them trying crawfish, Po' -Boys, the best fried chicken in America, Louisiana BBQ, shrimp & grits, & southern desserts.
Awhile back I searched national and popular food in England and it listed: Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding(sounds good) , Fish and Chips(sounds good), Shepherds Pie(sounds good minus the onions),Black Pudding (sounds odd, but if the onions weren't in it i'd try it), Trifle(very good), English Pancakes(soundsgood), Full English Breakfast(sounds great), Toad In The Hole(sounds good), Steak and Kidney Pie(sounds good except for the onions), Scotch Egg(no onions and I'd like it), and Lancashire Hot Pot(take out the onions and I'd like it.) Collectively it sounds bland, but I'd eat the majority of them without onions. I haven't liked onions since I was a child: the smell, taste, texture, from 1965 to the present. I'm glad you're checking out the different foods in the United States. The US is full of many cultures; I'm from New Mexico where it's predominantly: White, Spanish, Mexican, and Native American, but all types of cultures are here. Mexican is spicier, heavily seasoned, with a big emphasis on corn-based dishes and fresh ingredients and of course Green and Red Chili. Spanish food relies on: olive oil and garlic, and tamer, and equally rich flavors. New Mexico has many different Native American Tribes mainly: Pueblo, Apache, and Navajo(pronounced Nah Vuh Ho) The Magic 8 in Native American food are: corn, beans, squash, chile's, tomatoes, potatoes, vanilla, and cacao(generally unaltered, whole seeds of cacao fruit.) Frybread is also very good. I'm excited to see what other cultures you check out! To me, all barbecue is excellent, I love southern food in general except for collard greens(very bitter.) Pretty much every American has fast food places where they live, some are better than others, however it's fast for a reason, and it tastes like it too. So keep that in mind, many people would rather eat at a restaurant than fast food. If you've never been to the US before or tried it where you live, then I would say try it. I would say the top fast food places in every state would be: Macdonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Arby's, KFC, Der Weinerschnitzel, and Dairy Queen, there are certainly more, but these were around when I was a kid from 1970 to 1984.
For people trying oysters for the first time, I definitely recommend either deep fried or chargrilled (which is famous in New Orleans). If you don't like one or even both of those, as my friend Katie who passed would say, "I don't even know you anymore".
Cutest couple ever🥰 New sub and I giggle watching them. I hope u get a chance to come visit. Blessed with this beautiful country with rich diverse food, and history. Most of us are" proper" nice ❤
Wait till you see them at their first Crawfish Boil. 😂 We have levels of shrimp here from popcorn size shrimp to jumbo shrimp and a thousand ways to cook everything.
A lot of the soul food meals are made to put a little of everything on your fork per bite. That's how I like to eat it. Try different combos for different flavors
The North East US is very diverse. With probably all ethnicities, outside of isolated tribes, and people all over the states so there's a little of everything here. Very busy so the quality can vary
A lot of times when any franchise goes to any other country they “try” to keep some of their originals but they usually change their recipes to more appeal to local cuisine. Jolly’s first channel was Korean Englishman and they mention a lot how Korean food in the UK is not real Korean food, but much more muted and mellowed down for the British pallet.
I had gumbo myself and it's a good thing of soup. It is a hearty soup that not only serves the heat but also fills you up. It's ok if you don't like it but I'm used to it since I grew up on soups. And Fats... I hope you are ready for some serious weight gain once you come here. The desserts of the American South is enough to have you wishing for more. I honestly can gain easily 10kg if I don't keep myself in shape and pace it.
Have a look at British guy visits Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Also look a Pittsburgh Travel Guide city of bridges. Driving downtown Pittsburgh Pa. By J. Utah.
Their biggest mistake they did is add hot sauce before taste testing it, know what your spices taste like before adding it! Best advice I’ve received on my cooking journey
Soul Food, like Soul Music, Soul Brother, Soul Sister = African American food. Much of it if Southern origin but not only. It deeply influences Southern Cuisine because for hundreds of years African Americans cooked White American slave owners’ meals. There’s a big difference between Soul Food & just *Southern Food*.
Most of the mom and pop restaurants do give good portion sizes. But I've noticed that almost all Asian restaurants give good portion sizes compared to the price. If I'm really hungry and I don't have much money, I will head to an Asian restaurant.
“New Orr-Leens.”….. It’s pronounced “Newwrarlins” by the locals. Almost one word. UK taste buds bro. Anything beyond a 1/10 is too much. Louisiana Hot Sauce is too much for these guys? Really? When Asian and Latin people make fun of White people not being able to handle spice, I am going to assume they mean the British now. I put pepper flakes and hot sauce of almost everything I eat.
Just a little info about the competition in American Restraunts. It is hard for many of the new start up owners to break into the business. To compete against the bigger franchise restraunts that you will find everywhere, you have to make your food special or unigue to the area. Mainly because of cost which will send some customers to the established commercial restraunts, which doesn't taste as good, but less expensive. My own personal experience is that you find a new restraunt with great tasting food and within a year its out of business because it can't compete with the big franchises.
England really almost conquered the world looking for spices, only not to use any of them.

For people trying oysters for the first time, I definitely recommend either deep fried or chargrilled (which is famous in New Orleans). If you don't like one or even both of those, as my friend Katie who passed would say, "I don't even know you anymore".
You must have Gumbo! New Orleans is my next vacation destination.
Cutest couple ever🥰 New sub and I giggle watching them. I hope u get a chance to come visit. Blessed with this beautiful country with rich diverse food, and history. Most of us are" proper" nice ❤
Most time Gumbo is serve over white rice. The rice soak up the juice OMG with some cornbread lawd
Wait till you see them at their first Crawfish Boil. 😂
We have levels of shrimp here from popcorn size shrimp to jumbo shrimp and a thousand ways to cook everything.
Just to let you know, catfishes is not seafood catfish is a freshwater fish.
A lot of the soul food meals are made to put a little of everything on your fork per bite. That's how I like to eat it. Try different combos for different flavors
The North East US is very diverse. With probably all ethnicities, outside of isolated tribes, and people all over the states so there's a little of everything here. Very busy so the quality can vary
great channel.
Also keep in mind raw oysters are an aphrodisiac however oyster sauce is cooked
Come to America on a temp Visa. There's another British couple traveling around Texas now.
You are right gumbo has been around for a very long time maybe it's their recipe she talking about
Have a look at British guy visits Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Also look a Pittsburgh Travel Guide city of bridges. Driving downtown Pittsburgh Pa. By J. Utah.
It is the cajun spices that make Louisiana food amazing
You will get food like that in the south..as far west as Houston TX and as far east as Georgia
Gumbo can be closer to a stew than soup depending on the recipe
Their biggest mistake they did is add hot sauce before taste testing it, know what your spices taste like before adding it! Best advice I’ve received on my cooking journey
The secret to eating soup if you don’t like soups, pour it over white rice, that way the rice flavor doesn’t take away from the soup
gumbo is so good
Num num num. Louisiana hot sauces are very sharp. I put Mexican hot sauce on my eggs ... I would only put a few drops into Cajun couisine to taste.
Add seasoning, and I do mean than just salt & pepper.
Soul Food, like Soul Music, Soul Brother, Soul Sister = African American food. Much of it if Southern origin but not only. It deeply influences Southern Cuisine because for hundreds of years African Americans cooked White American slave owners’ meals. There’s a big difference between Soul Food & just *Southern Food*.
steamed oysters with lemon is DELICIOUS, not fishy at all
Most of the mom and pop restaurants do give good portion sizes. But I've noticed that almost all Asian restaurants give good portion sizes compared to the price. If I'm really hungry and I don't have much money, I will head to an Asian restaurant.
Consider that Great Britain became an empire in the course of looking for spices..... then decided not to use any of what they discovered. LOL
Dont be dismayed about the pork in the food! Many restaurants offer chicken sausage options that dont taste the same but are still delicious!😋
Oyster is slimy goop. I’ve had oysters prepared a few different ways in New Orleans.
Unless fried crispy, yes. Raw, steamed, dressing, in gumbo, etc…..
It is definitely an acquired taste. 😎
My own personal experience is that you find a new restraunt with great tasting food and within a year its out of business because it can't compete with the big franchises.
the color comes from the cajun spices
No Dukee Chase is the excellence of GUMBO. Hands down.
