You are one of the (if not THE) best teachers on UA-cam. Clear, concise, thorough.
My God, what a fabulous teacher you are!!! I previously used bought paint but I am making my own pigments and want to start using them with other mediums besides acrylic or oil binders ... I am.so pleased to have found your channel and will now try making my own encaustic paints ... I have everything except that handy thermometer you use! Next thing to buy 😂... thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with such thoroughness and patience ❤
I love a deep deep electric blue. Also, acra violet. bronze-y browns and a soft, old gold.
You are a natural teacher. I have watched a lot of videos on encaustics and this is the best. I have learned so much. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind feedback! :)
This was extremely helpful!! Thanks for the suggestion of earth pigments as well. They are much more affordable than buying encaustic paints directly.
This is probably the best video for making encaustic paint I've seen yet.Thumbs up and subbing.
Thanks! You just made my day! :)
@@johwey I totally agree!! I can't tell you how many video series I've watched on this and they don't hold a candle to how good this is!
@@angiewright-artist8246 Thanks so much Angie!

Johwey gostei muito de sua delicadeza e cuidados ao ensinar, muito bom mesmo.
Thanks for all the good cleaning tips! I’ll be making my medium soon. Your encaustic paint is very vibrant, neat and clean looking!
Are you filipina?
Jowhey, I really appreciate how you do not waste a moment in your instructional video. You cover all the bases, and tell us how we can adjust. Fave colour? I can't-- I love colour. Robin's egg blue? Indigo? I will subscribe, as I like your teaching style and what you're sharing. Rock on.
Thanks so much! And love those colors as well! It is really difficult to choose a favorite color! :)
Alizirin crimson and yellow ochre are my favorite colors ♡ ty for teaching

You're welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful! :)
Thank you for a precise and
meaningful demonstration.
I have made and used oil paints for almost 50 years.
Planning to begin encaustic soon ( when I finish building our house)
How exciting! Good luck on both your house and encaustic adventures!
Wow so very easy to understand and follow this is probably the best tutorial on youtube or even the web
Thanks so much! 😊
I love the green gold colorway.
Thank you very much for this video. I have purchased some encaustic medium and a set of dry pigments. Now I know how to make the paint

Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much for sharing :)
So glad I found you channel. While there are many brands of chalk and milk paint out there I have always a had a passion for making my own paint. Not only is more fun, but it costs less. Now I have to watch your other videos. I need to see how to make the encaustic medium. You asked about favorite colors: The read you just made is one, My other is what I cal Depression Green. It's muted with a bit of red. I would layer these two colors withe maybe a 3rd or even 4th color. Liked and subscribed.
excellent Video!! thank you
Excellent video!!
Thank you very much!
Thank you just what I needed to start. Please make more :)
Hi Johwey - You are so calm and organized and I really enjoy your tutorials. In stead of buying pigment powder, in your opinion, is using oil paints mixed with encaustic medium a good alternative to buying expensive paints? Thanks
Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it! :) To answer your question-- using oil paint is not a cost effective way to make encaustic paint. Plus you're introducing a lot of oil to the mix. Oil needs oxygen to cure/harden which it can't get once it's already mixed into the wax. This compromises your paint's durability.
Love this video. Clear and easy to follow.
This was really clear. Thank you 🎀
Thank you for this wonderful video. I am new at encaustics and you have already answered so many questions. Will be following your other videos. You are so clear and to the point.
Thank you for your feedback! :)
Hello Johwey, I am new to your channel. I am also very grateful to have found your videos, your teaching style is top notch! The brushes you use early in your video do not look like chip brushes they look finer. Can you provide information on these brushes? Many Thanks!
Thank you so much for your kind comment. The brushes I used are just inexpensive art brushes I’ve had for a long time. Brand is not printed on the brush so I can’t tell you what they are. 😅
Thank you
very helpful! thanks
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful! 😊
Wow! Thank you!!
Great video
Nice vid.

Another great video:) Thanks for doing these. So helpful.
Wow! Thx a lot!!
Really useful video! Thank you so much✨
Glad it was helpful! 😊
great video!! so methodical
Thanks! 😊
Can you use white pigment paste to color the wax?
very interesting .... thanks lady
very pro.
amazing video thank you so much! great info
Glad you enjoyed it!
I absolutely love your writing. It is so elegant. Is there anyway to not waste the pigment and medium left in the container or was it a very small amount. It appeared to be a lot of paint .
Thank you for your kind words. As for the paint, you can pour every bit of paint in the mold so there's no waste. I just didn't want to overpour in that one mold so I may have left quite a bit in the container.
Great video! Thank you
Very helpful! Thank you!
Thanks! :)

Thank you, your videos are very informative. I work with encaustic medium and use soy wax to clean my brushes. Soy is a water soluble wax so you can further wash brushes with a mild soap, the soy also leaves the brushes very soft. Will be looking for more videos. Have you used carnauba wax in the encaustic medium? Interested in knowing how it affects the finished product, the art piece.
What kind of paper, or label are you using to identify the colors? I just put an order in to Earth Pigments, and will begin making my own paint.also a silicone mold..how much medium do you use to the 2 teaspoons of pigment? This was a fabulous tutorial..slow and easy..loved it.
Thanks Judith! ... I just use paper scraps to make labels, I have a box full of them. You can use anything you have on hand, even plain copy paper cut to size... I bet you had fun ordering your pigments. It's always difficult to choose from the many color choices... I use 1 oz of medium for every 2 teaspoons of pigment. This amount will make 1 bar of paint when using the same mold I used in the video. I hope this helps. :)
Thanks for this demonstration! Well done. I also love your cabinet drawers in the background. Looks so organised. What pigments are you using and where do you buy it? I am taught that the paraffin wax and the soy wax effect the encaustic medium and even cause it to disintegrate. It is recommended to rather clean the brushes with encaustic medium or clear beeswax until there is no colour on the brush. It is especially important if you want to sell your art.
Thanks for your feedback. Most of my pigments are from Earth Pigments and Sinopia. I wouldn't find using encaustic medium to be a cost-effective way of cleaning brushes. I have no problem with using paraffin or soy wax as a cleaning agent. I like how it rinses off paint. Any excess wax is wiped off with a paper towel and any residue left has negligible effect on my painting.
THANK YOU! Please come back to UA-cam, I just discovered your channel!
Aww! Thanks! I'm planning to consistently post more videos.
Johwey, I have been enjoying your videos. They are short and clear and easy to follow. I am new to encaustic, and I wonder if it is ok to paint encaustic over already dry oil paint (thinly applied, sanded). Thanks
I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I do apply encaustic over thin layers of oil paint and so far I haven't had any problems with it.
Could we use colored clays to make our paint? Like Australian red clay or French green clay? Love your information & I will give it a try. Also is it okay to add a drop of essential oil to the paint? Thanks a lot.
You can definitely experiment with different kinds of earth pigments, especially test for lightfastness. And I've never tried adding essential oil to the paint. The sweet smell of the beeswax is enough for me. 😊
Very informative indeed. Im a new subbie and pleased about it too as you were most clear and concise. May i ask please where you got that silicone mould from? It makes the perfect 'cakes'!!!! :). XTibbyX
Thank you! I got the silicone mould from Amazon (alexa.design/2nzhnMV)! :)
Thanks hugely my friend xxx
Thank you for a very informative video. Can you also use shavings from pastels?
You can but if I'm using chalk pastel shavings, I would just apply it directly to my painting.
Where can you buy the dry pigments? The colors in your video are awesome.
Hello Johwey! I have just discovered your channel!! Loved this video! Can you answer a 3 questions please? 1) Can you provide a link for where & what kind of pigments you get? I know you used 2 teaspoons for the pigment, but 2) how much wax did you use in the can for the mold? 3) Can you provide a link for where & what kind of wax you get for the creation of the paint? Thank you so much! :)
Hi Kathryn! (1) I use Earth Pigments (earthpigments.com), all their pigments are non-toxic and they have lots of fun colors! (2) I used 1 ounce of medium. (3) I buy beeswax (to make encaustic medium) in bulk from a few different places, and just choose whichever is cheaper at the time. An online place I like is bulknaturaloils.com. :)
What pigments do you recommend?
Thank you for really good video, there is nothing “to much waste of my time” and not “too speed up” so you wont be able to catch anything. I have a question, as at any painting process the most used colors are black and white. Where do you buy those two colors in bulk? Thanks again.
P.S. Where can I find the silicone molds you show on your video? Thank you.
Hi, great video and I hope you are well. Can I use Mica Powders for pigment? Thanks!
I would personally just use mica powders as finishing touches, and, as such, I've only used them brushed or burnished on an encaustic surface. You can certainly experiment with making encaustic paint using mica powders. It probably won't be as effective as pigment powders. Depending on the ratio, it may not stain well or make an even wash and you'll probably lose the luster if it's buried in too much wax.
So when i mix my pigment with Encaustic medium and pour it into my silicon tray it looks fine until it hardens and the pigment settles to the bottom. what am i doing wrong? my working Temperature is 100 C.
Some pigments are inherently more difficult to incorporate into a medium. You can try using a smaller or shallower mold so that the paint solidifies before the pigment gets a chance to settle at the bottom. Alternatively, you can still use the paint you made but, instead of melting a little bit at a time on your palette, melt the whole thing so you get the chance to remix it again. I hope my reply helped.
Could you please link the pigment brand Earth Pigments? Want to be sure to purchase the right type of pigment
earthpigments.com/
Aren't you wasting a lot of pigment at the bottom of the metal mixing container?
i wonder why even clean your brushes? you could just assign them to being used for the same colour. Would save you having to use any paraffin also.
Most of the time I don't have to clean my brushes. There are times though when I need to. So it's good to know how to clean them for those rare occasions.
I have a lot of dry pigments I have used to make my own oil colors. They seems like the ones you have used. Do you think they are suitable for encaustic?
Can i use TINTEX DYE for clothes as pigment powder? I was hoping saving money if that works. Have you ever tried?
Do you ever have issues with the pigment not mixing in well? I tried this and the dry pigment clumped in tiny bits so the encaustic looks gritty.
what's the average cost when making the paints from scratch.
Just went to earth pigments website, can I uses any of the pigments?
Where did you source your pigments ?
Most of my pigments are from Sinopia (sinopia.com) and Earth Pigments (earthpigments.com)
Does making your own paints save money or is it just to make custom colors? I’m new to this medium and love it but it’s crazy expensive to get started!
In my experience, if you know you'll be doing a lot of painting, making your own medium and paints is definitely more cost-effective. The initial investment might be significant but it will save you a lot of money in the long run. But like I suggested in the video, I highly recommend buying a few ready-made paints even if you're thinking of making your paints because it's always good to have a benchmark.
what brush do you use? Synthetic?
I use chip brushes.
Thank you. What brand of pigment powders do you use?
I use pigments from Sinopia and Earth Pigments. I like Earth Pigments a lot, all their pigments are non-toxic.
Thank you. I've been looking at their website and like the reasonable kit prices too.
I am hearing impaired and i love your videos, but i have trouble understanding you. Could you add subtitles without too much cost? It would be a great help
The video now has edited subtitles to help you understand the video better. Just click the "cc" button on the lower right corner of the video to enable subtitles. I hope this helps. :)
Hello, newbie here. What exactly is the "medium" you used? Thank you for your time!
It's encaustic medium. It's basically encaustic paint without any pigment/color. You can buy encaustic medium or make your own. I have a video that shows how to make your own encaustic medium.
Dear Johwey, would you be so kind to direct me to the best place to buy pigments! Quality and price (affordable). Thank you very much.
You can check out earthpigments.com (that's what I used in the video), although some of their pigments contain fillers, so read the description well when choosing a color.
@@johwey thank you.
Can you recommend some good non toxic pigments to use?
I like Earth Pigments (earthpigments.com). They are non-toxic and they have a wonderful selection of colors.
from where you get these dry colours?
I buy most of my dry pigments from Earth Pigments and Sinopia.
ok.can we use fabric paints?
It's best to stick with dry pigments when making encaustic paint. Some use oil paint for pigment which I don't recommend either.
Wow please be very careful - wear gloves and a facemask so you don't breathe any in.
I like “duck Egg”
Thank you
Thank you
