This song was / is a LONG time favorite of mine. Me being Generation X, born in 1971, being a kid / teenager growing up in The 80s, this was one the most popular song from the 80s. The Pet Shops Boys, have stated , that their intention was to make a Hip Hop / Rap song after listening to and being inspired The Message by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five social commentary / platform. So they came up West End Girls, which is about "Classism" in East and West End in London, England. If you've spent a lot of time in England, like i have, then you would for sure know what they are talking about.
i had their lp. in 1987 when my son was a year old, a baby, at home we showed him the LP cover, and he kept saying "Daddy, Daddy", because I was very similar to the singer, I even had the same cut as hair, and my baby thought it was me on the cover of the LP. we laughed too much.
Girl! I was THERE (the 80's) and loved this song and never realized what the deeper meaning was. This is why I watch you, you're so open and a real music lover. Keep up the great work and I'll keep watching!
I still love The Pet Shop Boys! They have so many bangers, you should check out some of their other tunes like "It's a Sin", "What Have I Done To Deserve This?", and "Why Don't We Live Together". They were a groundbreaking band and IMO they stood out among their peers because they were not a "cookie cutter" new wave band. They are great to see live, too - they put on a great show!
Just about hit the nail on the head Jayy, it's about sex, drugs and the clubbing/nightlife in 80s London where there were some famous night spots and also underground night spots that you had to know about to know about. Historically the East End of London is know as a poorer district, in the Victorian era it was full of slums. The West End in London is famous for its Theatres, restaurants and clubs. In the 80s the West End club scene was where it was at. The West End girls were usually more affluent women out for a good and sometimes different night out. So the East End boys would go to pick up some, what they would've called back then, 'posh totty' and take a walk on the wild side. 'Which do you chose, the hard or soft option' is a drugs reference,
Much as I like this particular reactor, she will suffer from the same lack of familiarity with British life as all the others from across the pond, not that it's a bad thing, to be spared the vomiting and drunken brawls which are a staple of every weekend in our towns and cities. It's just that they cannot always understand the song references as can be seen from trawling through other reactor's comments. Anyway, your 'posh totty' hit the nail on the head, plus the posh girls often like what is frequently referred to as 'a bit of rough', for a change. Many years ago a mate of mine who was an east end boy told me of how him and his mate picked up a couple of really nice clasy girls and asked them to go for some food after the pub or club shut. The girls agreed expecting to go to a fancy restaurant where they could smirk at the east enders lack of taste and breeding........ but the lads took them for a bag of fish and chips from a greasy but decent take away. According to my mate, who was a real charmer, the girls admitted afterwards that it had been a fantastic night and very diferent from their usual routine. This song always reminds me of that tale which must have taken place in the early 1970's, long before the song was written.
You are right that hard or soft option is a drugs reference, but the beauty of this kind is that this song came out in the 80s with the rise of the stock market and yuppies, so this I think whilst about drugs is a nod to choosing stocks that could be a hard or soft option as well, especially because the City of London is one of the world's biggest financial centres where this kind of language was being used, as well as drugs of course, the two often going hand in hand!!!
All of the above. The reason you are getting Matrix vibes is because of a sub genre of art called "cyberpunk." Cyberpunk is hard to describe in full, but the 70s and 80s ushered in the aesthetic in art, film, and music. In the UK, punks discovered cheap synthesizers and went to town, often stealing from disco's rhythm sense along the way. What you get is...this. Stripped down dance music with insanity, despair, and/or defiance in the lyrics. Remember, this was the Cold War and we were expecting to get nuked out by 1990. The 80s was seen, in part, as the last party for the whole of humanity. Oh, right, and the LGBTQIA+ vibe might be what you were perceiving. While cyberpunk in the 70s-80s suffered from white straight male testosterone poisoning - and I say that as a queer female fan of the stuff - the music and visual arts started folding in more queer folk and queer content. You just listened to some. The Matrix is some. The TRON soundtrack/Switched on Bach is some.
Good Reaction and observations. It's about the old days when on a Friday and Saturday Nights the East End "real" London lads met up in The "West End" of London like Times Square/Broadway and met the richer, classier Girls from The West of London. THen The East Enders moved out to the Counties surrounding Londoners like most indigenous London families. I moved out just 10 miles to the Outer London Suburbs 38 years ago in 1983 and I STILL miss the vibe and stimulation of the heart of Central London every day .. I was at THAT train Station: WATERLOO-YESTERDAY ! and that Number 42 Bus used to have my former High Street as part of its route. MEMORIES!
I love this song! The 80s had the ugliest cars and the best music! The song is basically about the “it” girls hanging out with the guys from the wrong side of the tracks
LOVE the Pet Shop boys....been loving them since they first came out. So beautiful, sophisticated, and ahead of their time. They are one of my favorite bands ever. So glad you reacted to them. Their music is just perfect
They did a 90s song called Go West. Now that was a tune worth a review. And another 90s track called Se A Vida E. It's a Sin, Always On My Mind, Domino Dancing, Heart, Left to my own Devices, Suburbia and What have I done to Deserve this (duet with Dusty Springfield) are all my favourite tracks by the Pet Shop Boys.
Does anyone else find it so disturbing that there are a million youtube videos of african americans watching white videos for the first time and we ve been listening to their music all our life but were the ones called racist? I find it very telling actually. but so awesome to see young ladies like this finally getting that we are all in this together and music can help that happen.
"West End Girls" April 1984 is a song by the English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys. Written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, the song was released twice as a single. The song's lyrics are concerned with class and the pressures of inner-city life which were inspired partly by T. S. Eliot's poem The Waste Land. It was generally well received by contemporary music critics and has been frequently cited as a highlight in the duo's career. The first version of the song was produced by Bobby Orlando and was released on Columbia Records' Bobcat Records imprint in April 1984, becoming a club hit in the United States and some European countries. After the duo signed with EMI, the song was re-recorded with producer Stephen Hague for their first studio album, Please. In October 1985, the new version was released, reaching number one in the United Kingdom and the United States in 1986. In 1987, the song won Best Single at the Brit Awards, and Best International Hit at the Ivor Novello Awards. In 2005, 20 years after its release, the song was awarded Song of The Decade between the years 1985 and 1994 by the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters. A critic's poll in 2020 by The Guardian selected "West End Girls" as number one of the 100 greatest UK number one singles.[2] The song was performed by Pet Shop Boys at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony.
My favorite song from the 80s, so it was pretty wild to be sitting at a McDonald's in the West End in 2006, on my first trip to London, and hear it in the restaurant
Probably the worst track Simple Minds did 😲 New Gold Dream was laced with hit after hit... The kid Jensen studio session (here on UA-cam) was surreal... May I recommend Hunter and the Hunted dreamtime Mix, theme for great citys & someone somewhere from the Kid Jensen set.
And in Canada, it was huge in the clubs. My era in the clubs was short but this song stayed with me as I don't remember it from the radio even though it must have got a lot of air play. I remember hearing it a few years ago and knew I heard it before but didn't recall it from the radio or any music video because I had pretty much stopped listening to them at the time. Still holds up really well as does the video.
This was the music of the gay bars and upscale dance clubs... It's best either thru headphones with your eyes closed or out loud on a great sound system with a bunch of strangers dancing in the dark. Early 80's EDM is its own universe of sonic marvels. :)
Ooh , one of my favorite bands of the 80s and 90s. Fantastic discography. Of course,, this was their first video released here in US, so will always be my favorite. So glad you picked up on the Matrix jacket...I thought I was the only one to notice that.
You know when it started and you were shocked I've never actually thought about the lyrics at the start of the song, and it's very sad that when you did this I was thinking of all the school shootings and massacres that happen these days. I am now intrigued as to why these lyrics were written because the rest of the song isn't at all about this, but about West End Girls, who are the fancy girls, and East End Boys who are the working class ones. You should really react to Pet Shop Boys - Go West, it's an iconic song, such an anthem, as well as others like It's a Sin, Heart, and Suburbia, all amazing songs in their own right!!!
The UK's Guardian newspaper recently published a countdown of singles that got to no one in the British charts. Limited to only one song per artist for some reason. They put this at number one. Followed by The Specials' Ghost Town and The Beatles' She Loves You. Their online edition always has its fair share of argumentative readers' comments but this series was one of the most controversial.
Unless the 70s disappear that can never be true. I would actually say 67-82 were the best ever years. But the 80s went downhill pretty quick, it got way too corporate, thus we got things like Mili Vanili. Because it was not about the music but the LOOK.........Elton John would have never been given a contract in the 80s.
One of the greatest sounds in music history. The first 45 seconds put you in that place. Great driving song. Great lyrics. This song is the epitome of the '80s and MTV. And, when he walks past the movie theater, Fletch is on the marquee. You definitely need to watch Fletch 7 or 12 times.
Thank you for reviewing an all-time favorite from my 80s youth. I'm going to request something a little different from that era: the theme song from the TV show "Moonlighting," one of the best shows of the decade, starring Cybill Shepherd and a then-unknown Bruce Willis. The song, a minor hit in its own right, was performed by the late (and supremely great) Al Jarreau. One of the best - certainly the smoothest - TV theme songs ever.
We got it twice as good at the time of its inception, as this was ground breaking technology they where using.. We'd Never heard nothing like it, alas you get the repeat..
I'm gonna throw something out here, that's really. Try a song by Ministry called Every day is Halloween, the video is a very old Disney film. The song is fantastic.
I always thought the song was about Berlin. It came out during the time when the USSR was letting there be a little more movement between East and West.
East end of London was the working class part of the city... the West end was the rich, well-off area... so East end boys & West end girls is about poor boys hooking up w/ rich girls...
They used to hang out on some weekends at Heaven Ultra Disco back in the mid 80's. I was stationed north of London at the time. I met Freddie Mercury there. I dated the bartender at the piano bar that was shown in the video. It was an amazing time to be young and alive!
