Great idea! Frankly I'm surprised "slip-on" wedges like these aren't already sold for 5 and 6.5 ton splitters that don't have removable wedges given how much more efficiently they split the wood and how much less stress they put on the pump when splitting. I'll have to get me some good thick scrap and do this on my old Speeco 5 ton. Been wanting to find a project to break out my welder for so I don't get rusty (pun intended).
I like the attachment. I might weld up a similar cutter. I have seen a few videos on improving the splitting wedge. I have the exact same electronic splitter. I have yet to see someone sharpen the cutting face, a file, right angle grinder with sandpaper. I keep mine some what sharp. These little splitters are great for feeding backyard smokers and pizza ovens, my 2 cents. Have a nice day.
Canadian tire has a $30 attachment for the non splitting end with a wedge on it. It the gives you a wedge in each end and makes splitting fresh wood or knotty wood nice and easy. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Having a double header splitting wedges improves performance greatly. Allow doughtful logs to be split. Suggest the wedges are honed almost knife edge. Appears to make penetration easier & less strain on hydraulic pump, electric motor. Making a finer edge radically altered the loading , stresses imposed on the machine. Went from overload, to NO PROBLEM, what's next boss . . .
Nice job, though I have found that rather than trying to spot through the centre like that, I start the split closer to one side, then work around the log to complete the job without any need of modification. If you like to manufacture in steel, go for it... :)
The oil soaked rag should be balled up as tight as possible and placed in a wicker waste basket with highly combustible materials? Also, I lost those needle nosed vise grips in the same field you were digging in so please send them back to me. After you clean them up of course. 😆 Good job on the splitter 👍🏼
Great modification on that log splitter, I toss my oil soaked rags in the corner of my garage, and wait till they start to smolder, and use that as a natural way to fumigate my garage.
Thank you for this video - just what i needed. Another benefit is that the ram gets closer to the splitting wedge. It's so annoying when you have a log with a nut near the end, and it doesn't get split all the way, because the ram stops short. I tried following along, but i seemed you welded a short piece in the back, and then you later ground that off, and replaced it with a full plate? Guess you where just winging it, as you went along :) Did you take the slope of the original wedge into consideration when constructing the new wedge, or is it just straight? Again - thank you for the great video, and idea :)
The shape of the wedge doesn't lend itself to cutting into the wood even if it's sharp - if you've ever tried to split wood with a splitting maul you would see why
@@kebo57 yes, you are correct, but it still isn't really that bad and the extra actual diameter log you can split is quite impressive. I actually plan on filming a follow up video - I have some 22" logs to split!
Rags soaked with linseed oil should be stored in a non flammable airtight container until next use (like an old pickle jar or something)...or burned intentionally if not to be used again.
If you use the right chemicals you can get most of that rust off either that or you could do I don’t know what they call electrolysis were you a hook it up to a battery charger and you put it in salt water none of that should work to

I just bought a four way splitter for our machine, $27.00 Canadian, works good

Lmao!
Nice thick steel and strong welds !!👍👍Hey man it works good !! Those Vice Grips will be a KILLER restoration !! i can't wait !! 👍👍
The result is nuts!
I think the idea of having a splitting wedge on each end is a better idea. One end or the other will always start to split if they are nice and sharp.
nice project, but I just keep my wedge sharp, and spray it with silicon spray once in awhile. No problems!
That was a lot of extra work. Why didn't u just cut an axe head in 1/2 and weld it to the splitter wedge
Nice. I’ve got some logs you can test that out with.
😎☺️
Nice job, you had me at who "Do you like treats" Nice upgrade.

lol the outdoor metal bandsaw
Very cool. Could you just sharpen the original or do you thing you need the blade action? You know you could sell these..
Loved the dogs, btw.
Dont worry guys, restoration video coming again soon, and its insane!!
can you make me one please?
can you make me one please?
What is wrong with sharpening the existing edge? Your plate is mild steel your existing wedge is not.

Seems to work quit well, only drawback that you lose some of the capacity of the splitter, as far as log length goes. Well done, though!

Brilliant
Great job and the video is great thanks for sharing with us
Your welcome ☺️
That is true with a maul, axe, and log splitter. If the wedge is blunt its NOT GOING TO SPLIT. It got to penetrate to split
Great idea! Thanks for sharing. Cheers
Thanks Joe, it really does transform the machine!

👍🏼
Any idea where I can purchase one of these already fabricated?
There are fabricators and nearly every town that can do it.
Thanks for sharing.
Great video 👍
Thank you ☺️
Was that a motorcycle in the background.
Yes 😎
Anyplace I can buy something like that for my log splitter?
I dont think so, thats one of the reasons i made this!
@@FixitRestoreit can you make me one?
Hope your doing well. It’s been a while man!
Doing great thank you 😎
HAHHAHAh Can't make me one of them bad boys ? ahha
Sounds like u need to bleed off some air on the splitter
Only thing I would of done differently would have made the blade taller
That would have defeated the purpose.

По звуку масло не хватает
that splitter should have split that as it was easy.
