THE ONLINE SINGING COURSE is available now with TARA SIMON!! 56 Daily Video Lessons to take your voice from Good to Great!! Check it out at: tarasimonstudios.com/ssnh2.0
Hey tara!! Thinking of checking out your video lessons :)))))) You should definitely take a look at "Evergreen" By yebba! I believe its about her late mom and its beautiful worth a listen :)
Yeah Tara’s vocal points on some of these were a misunderstanding of what yebba was trying to do. For instance, when she said “that was a little rough“ on one of Abbey’s distortions. Some of those may have been Abbey losing control; but it sounds more like a conscious choice to me. The choice to make some notes more valuable than others, thereby consequently actually Detuning some of them and favor The guttural quality of the notes itself
The strain, breathlessness, and cracks reflect her experience of a fractured relationship. All of it makes sense! The broken phrasing deliberately depicts the broken heart she is singing about.
Exactly or her clothes! I have watched several reaction videos and not one time did anyone comment on her appearance! Which doesn’t matter ! So I guess your clothes effect your voice huh 🤔 first time on your channel definitely will be my last
The point is to understand what she’s doing. Yebba is highly technical, she knows exactly what to do to get every specific sound in her performances. It’s how she can switch between the breathy, raspy tone and that full, resonant sound, and the high head voice. Obviously the emotion is more important with this song, but to say there is no point in finding out what’s happening, as if it’s all just subconcious is wrong
I was literally going to say the same thing. Everything she "critiqued" is what I love about this. Like she totally missed that she was basically on the verge of tears at some parts
every criticism? come on now obviously you don't want to dip your jaw and crush your larynx when singing low notes...is she supposed to throw out all logic and reason just because you like the way she's singing? no...
Thank you, I was upset by that comment, it had been made in another reaction video too. It is insulting, just because she is not skinny... silly, she's beautiful
Er... I think she meant she sings the way most people would expect a black singer to sing...she meant absolutely no disrespect and it had nothing to do with her not being skinny. Soul singers are most frequently from the black (African descended) community because of the jazz/blues origins. Other reactions to her performances refer to this - it's not about her dress size.
Your totally right Emily, didn’t particularly like Taras criticism/ comments on this one at all. all the critiques are what made this performance so touching for so many
nah i don’t think she was talking about her body lmao, she was saying that she’s white but she has very african inspired style because she has a gospel background
@@shavonboudreaux5380 it isn’t the Holy Spirit, I’m sorry, it isn’t. She can sing, absolutely! But this isn’t the Holy Ghost, that’s actually blasphemous to even say that. This didn’t break chains, it adds them.
@@KyleHurd you are absolutely ridiculous to say someone’s art form is adding chains to people simply bc it is not pointing back to your idea of God and salvation. Nobody has to suppress their stories and heartbreak to make happy go lucky music. Music like hers saves people too, even if it is not gospel or happy 24/7 bc it gives raw emotion, it gives ppl something to identify with and feel not something fake happy bc you think not singing about trials will bring someone closer to salvation, hush.
she highlighted the best and the worst things. This is the best analysis I've seen of this video. And I'm the one who has watched over 40 reactions of this video and love Yebba and how she sings, her natural and raw performance, but that doesn't mean you can't analyze it from a technical pov. Maybe you are the one who were expecting another crying reaction, or an amazed "youtube vocal coach". Open your mind and you'll enjoy AND learn!
You should watch Sam Johnson's reaction to it. He is also a voice coach but appreciated the emotion in it and loved it. Just search Sam Johnson and you will find him :)
Most people who love this song love the cracks, the lows...she was in pain when she sang this song. Her mother had just died. I mean you are a vocal coach and as you said your job is to make singers sound better, her job as a singer is to make us feel and everyone who did reaction videos to this song were in tears. Sometimes one can be too technical. Sometimes you just have to feel it and not analyze it lol.
queen diystyle I think she did a good job acknowledging both technique and emotions. Singing with technique is also important if you want to preserve your voice. Some of Yebba's execution were questionable where it could have been better emotion wise and vocal health wise.
I think when you work with vocals as a profession, you can't help but focus on the technical aspects of performances. Which is what she's here to do anyway, so in that sense Tara did her job well. However, this is one of those moments where you should just sit back with earphones on and listen to the whole thing without any stops. It's not about how well she did her runs, the pace of her vibrato or whether she's singing too high or low for her range. It's about the emotion she conveys and only that. At least it is for me. Which was the reason I was very hesitant to watch this reaction, cause the performance is perfection in my eyes.
I agree with you a bit, but the whole point of this YT channel is about critiquing vocals - so to just "feel" the performance rather than speak on the vocals would defeat the whole purpose of Tara's YT lmao
I agree with you. Yebba's whole thing is that she grew up singing in church and feels music which totally shows in the way she sings. The cracks and the rough parts of the song are what made it for me and it's not about sounding perfect all the time. Technique is important but it is also important to just sing and enjoy yourself, Yebba is clearly in the moment and telling a story, I think Tara completely missed the sentiment of the song. Also, commenting on Yebba's clothes and saying how unflattering her top is was a low blow, it's about the singing not appearances.
Well, yeah, because there wasn’t anything in this performance to leave me or her speechless. Not everyone will “ connect “ with you when you sing. And I consider my self a very sensitive person and I cry very easily over emotional songs and movies.. but this wasn’t it.. I agree with Tara. The wardrobe note was extremely out of line, but I think she did it more from a theatrical point of view than a superficial one- when you want to convey emotions your appearance does matter.
@@starkin4e You either haven’t experienced heart break or purposely want to be different. You and Tara are probably the only two people on earth who didn’t feel that performance. She could have been a busker on the streets with rags on,real is real, has nothing to do with wardrobe😞
@@MrScans1 But she is not a busker. So when you are performing your appearance does matter. I personally don’t care about that- she looked fine and even if she was dressed differently I still wouldn’t have liked the performance. I actually love the song and love when other people sing it. I’m not a fan of her, that’s all 🤷🏻♀️
Wardrobe???! GIRL BYE!!! I loved her entire wardrobe! From her earrings to her nail color choice to the matching the guitar. To her hair cut! I most importantly loved the song and her artistic use of expression!
If this was technically perfect, I don't think people would love it as much as they do. Also, not really sure what the point of commenting on how she's dressed was 😜
jay fine 100%!! This is 100% one of my favourite performances from anyone ever, it’s raw, and beautiful and soulful and humble and individual. I love it! And the comments about how she is dressed, in my opinion are irrelevant as this is a reaction on the vocals not the styling! I’m glad I’m not the only one with this sort of opinion!
@@bdawg202787 That has literally nothing to do with talent. That’s why I like blind auditions on the show the voice. It makes you focus on the talent and not the appearance of the artist. What they are wearing, the body type etc. Tara took the experience of this moment away with that “ technical mumbo-jumbo” .
She’s an artist, of the truest definition. I think the technicality’s are a world away from where she operates. I get that you are a teacher and into the tech stuff but I don’t even feel like this can be judged like that. It’s meant to be dirty and gritty and broken. Look up some covers of people doing this “perfect” and it falls so flat.
Being too perfect is what kills you as an artist. This is where your art stops. This is where feelings stop. This is where you become a machine that spits out notes correctly. Your comment at 7:50 was very wrongly thought of. I’m speaking as a Vocal Coach and Singer myself.
at 7:50 - she was trying to express her losing her mind in the literal sense. It wasn't about hitting the note. It was honestly the most powerful part of her performance to me.
She doesnt have an adele influence. She grew up n listening to gospel music particularly the clark sister. You want to her those runs yebba does listen to every single gospel singer. Gospel is such a small indsutry but everyone copies from it and doesnt give that genre its due credit
Tadiwa N just because she's white, can sing apparently gets put it in the Adele category when she's on her own influence this is a very poor reaction... Yebba is pure raw talent and has something that you can't teach
Well- she never said she was influenced by Adele, she said she has a similar tone as Adele - which is essentially true. And that all makes sense because Adele and many British singers were heavily inspired by soulful singers from Motown, the Clark sisters being included in that category as vocalists from Detroit.
I agree, gospel is a small industry which doesn't get it's due credit but has elements copied by just about anybody whose anybody! I find nothing about her voice unpleasant, even the very small mistakes which I think add color to her vocals. Her voice for me is ear candy, I ❤ it!
Yebba, at times, has an Adele sound - people are commenting as if it's a bad thing when people say Yebba sounds similar to Adele - both have such huge, amazing voices! They're emotional, passionate singers. But sista Abbey Smith has an upbringing in the church, so you hear the gospel too! SHE SANGS! Yebba is sweet, grit and soul all in one. Amen and Amen.
This critique is a really good example of someone who's spent their life learning "proper technique" without learning the importance of artistry. Emotion can't be taught...you either have it in your music or you don't, and that makes some people envious. I cringed every time she tried to demonstrate the "correct technique" to "fix" the performance of someone she would be lucky to get lessons from herself
@@mocsimocsi8319 its not being butthurt when “experts” think their opinions are the only correct path. Singing is an art form in that it is subjective there is no “proper” way.
Personally I thought her vibrato on the word hypnotized was a very smart and strategic placement. The vibrato was purposefully conveyed with the word hypnotized and you can even see it in the movement of swirl in her eyes.
You are right. It was on point. It was beautiful too. Her variation from edgy gritty belting to soft was intentional and takes lots of control, the opposite of what Tara was implying. And there was no trade of beauty, it was beautiful
She doesn’t need to fix anything. She’s won a Grammy. Everything she chooses is intentional and brilliant. Each run depicts the breaking heart an descending feeling of heartbreak.
I 💯 agree with this!! Yebba is so dirty and gritty in her voice and that’s what makes her amazing!! Those were conscious choices and its freakin awesome!!
100 % agree. Yebba is a guttural conveyer of emotion thru song. Changing those points in this video would make Yebba just another person who can sing and that’s it. This performance of Yebba was gut punching. Her version is exactly what betrayal of love sounds like. She’s unbelievably gifted.
I think you failed to realize she’s basically for real crying during this performance. It’s a very personal song to her. So of course her technique isn’t perfect.
“A little rough there” & “vocal fried” yes it’s supposed to be rough! She is putting her heart and WHOLE SOUL into this performance. This is not meant to be critiqued like a broadway song where every note must hit perfectly. This is the only person I’ve ever seen that has not been astonished by this performance. These technicalities need to be overlooked for this raw, soulful, and emotion filled performance!! She has the special ability to connect and make you feel every word.
I can't even listen to her talk about her "professional" opinion about this performance. First of all, she's not listening to the whole performance. Listen!! Feel how she hangs on every lyric. The way she uses her vocal to show us that there are anger and frustration brewing. It's not supposed to be perfect because relationships are not perfect. She is telling a story and it takes a special vocalist to do that! If she were to take her advice she would sound like a Disney princess.
The way I hollered and laughed @ “sound like a Disney princess”🤣🤣🤣...but you’re 150% right. The parts of the song Tara reiterated the “proper way” was very bland, boring, and dull😕🤷🏾♀️
Quortne Stallworth OMGGGGG...I thought I was the only one who couldn't finish watching this video because of Tara! I liked Tara before watching this video, but she completely put me off. Tara completely missed the meaning, emotion and delivery of this song. I understand that you're a vocal coach and you're all about critiquing artist and their vocal performances, but some songs don't require a critique, they require a freaking "STANDING OVATION"!! And she said "I" way too many times for me in this video. Mostly every critique was about her being able to do the same thing: "I this, I that, when I do this, what I would have done, the way I, I, I, I, I, I.....ENOUGH"!! And her clothing didn't require a comment.
@@PrinceLeigh dude i was livid when she put down her clothing choice. She clearly doesn't understand the real meaning of music and what certain performances are about in terms of the hurt and pain... Ive seen another vocal coach cry at her performance and didnt make one bad critique cuz he said shes so imperfectly perfect... Its part of her style and her heartbreak.
I would just like to add that this video was filmed shortly after Yebba's mother commit suicide. So she is this song with so much emotion towards her mother.
All this technical stuff is kool and all that if you're a teacher. But I've watch her video damn near 50 times and EACH time I get emotional. Damn what this woman is saying. I wouldn't change one note Yebba sang. The little imperfections is what makes it so special and relate able. This ain't Opera.
lmao this aint opera. she does stuff that isn't stylistic that just isn't right...like if you drop your chin while singing low you crush your larynx and you can't sing low nearly as well...she would only sound better with a couple corrections. think she's just supposed to teach people how to sing incorrectly because you like this video? what a ridiculous concept. if she said it was bad or something i'd be with you but she just made note of a couple things that she could have done that would have cost her voice far less to do what she wants...that's what learning to sing correctly is...it's not singing super straight and boring (though i've had to do that once or twice when i was the only singer in a band and had 3 sets to get through...r.i.p) it's about managing your voice the best you can...there is no reason to drop your chin while signing low...you're just going to muffle the sound...there is no stylistic benefit. why in the world should you not mention this? i do some things that cost a lot in a voice...like raspy shouts similar to bring me the horizon or other modern heavy metal groups...but there is a way to do it that's wayyyy better...would i complain "bro this ain't opera" if someone taught me the correct way to scream? of course not...that's what you're doing. besides maybe her critique on the really big vibrato on the line "look me in the eye" and the wardrobe comment everything was ways to do what she was doing with the exact same effect only healthier. air for example is the enemy of the vocal cords...you need support and vocal cord closure or you're going to wreck your voice singing like this all the time. air rushing through your cords dries out the mucosal membranes and that's bad...suddenly your falsetto will break...you won't be able to get into head voice...all kind of problems. does that mean this isn't a great performance? no of course not. but if you saw a powerlifter lifting a fuck ton of weight with kinda bad form does that mean you should teach that form? no...yeah maybe some people can pull it off and maybe they won't even get hurt like other people...but this is a vocal coach...she's not going to teach you to sing in ways that will hurt you and you're wrong if you want her too.
She stopped it so many times that there's no way she could possibly feel the emotion in it. Her mind was not open from the beginning by judging her appearance and constantly critiquing every vocal "flaw." I've never seen Tara stop a video this many times 🙄
I think she has the ability to correct every "bad" thing you mentioned, or her "poor choices" with her voice. I just think, like you said at one point, she just didn't care. She was just feeling it and going for it best off her emotions. I don't think she wanted to have perfect technique. She was telling a story, not trying to be the best singer.
03:40 I think that is what shes saying. She understands yebba is choosing emotion first but she also is critiquing based on a pure vocal coach perspective as well
Most of her critiques are for the people watching. She’s just explaining what’s happening and how you can either make those sounds or prevent them, while telling you what the vocal cost of those choices are.
EXACTLY! I grew up in Southern Baptist Churches so I understand exactly what you're saying and it's 100% on point..... Tara will not get it though.... at all. If she missed how powerful this performance is and where Yebba's influence came from, GOSPEL, then she's never understand your comment. It's a shame.
So many times you said “I can do that too...” or “I know because I...”, “I”, “I” “I” !! It’s a reaction video of HER song & HER skills, NOT a personal comparative checklist of your abilities. Jeez lady!
A little disappointed in the fact that you didn't FEEL her passion and pain.. I did a reaction to this song as well on my channel and was MOVED by her whole presence.. there was something in the atmosphere for sure and I think she's an AMAZING singer because she's REAL and it comes from a REAL place !!
Elonda Vibez my sentiments exactly! I watched your reaction before I came to this one, and your reactions and facial expressions were literally identical to mine. To be completely honest, watching this reaction just pissed me off a tiny bit 😂
@@mishag7504 lml!!! Ok so it's not just me... I have a sensitive spot for music being that music has been the only thing that's saved me from everything so I was also a bit aggravated with this .
You completely missed the point of this song. If the best vocalist on Broadway sang this song with technical precision and followed your advice...this song would fall flat and be meaningless. Every vocal "flaw" you are quick to point out is the very reason her song has millions of views and hundreds of reaction videos. This song gets into the listener's soul. Your comments get under the skin. I do, however, respect your right to be wrong.
But it is her job to make your voice sound amazing, so that’s exactly what she’s doing, pointing out the technical flaws that actually make the song so emotional.
Ed Sheeran signed her to his label after this performance. Because it made him cry. You know how you say your dream is to sing with Dimash? IMHO, you won’t get there if you don’t get what was so special about this performance. This is a Masterpiece.
Pink said in a conversation with Ellen that all beautiful art comes from a place of pain. She's been hurt, and look how beautiful it is. A technically perfect performance is BORING. I so respect vocal coaches and their expertise. This performance and song are perfect this way.
Yebba, I hope you're not listening to this lady. You are truly one of the most gifted singers I have ever heard and you are beautiful as well. I am a musician so do know what I'm talking about. Keep doing what you're doing in exactly the way you are doing it. You are perfect just the way you are!
Honestly YEBBA was singing with emotion and true feelings I don’t think she was trying to sound perfect or on point it was just raw! And I truly enjoyed everything she gave us!
We can forgive/overlook the imperfections in this performance because the good parts of it are just so spectacular. And she gives us all the feels. Real and raw.
I love Yebba...and i mean i LOVE Yebba! There hasn’t been a singer that has moved me this much in such a long time. It was hard to watch a critique of Yebba’s that wasn’t full of praise if I’m comepletly honest! But if you follow Yebba, as I do, she recently reposted this video on her IG saying she herself thought she had done a terrible job. I’m sure that had, in part, due to her vocal knowledge like this coach! She also stated that she was over taken by something powerful! All I’m saying is she was BRILLANT and is brilliant! I am always touched by her and in the end that’s all that matters to me! Now the whole clothing advice...that she could have kept to herself!
her voice cracked during her high note because she was choking back tears.. but the whole performance was very emotional & dirty for her voice. loved her voice throughout the entire thing.
Lots of people are upset because Tara didn't "feel" the song the way they think she should. She's not doing "reaction" videos from an emotional standpoint, she's doing them as a vocal coach. You can't always do it both ways. She doesn't know the backstory, she doesn't know how the song was composed, she doesn't know anything other than what she's hearing at that moment. Not all of her comments were negative - some were just informative and it's her job as a coach to be THAT person. The choice and deliverance of the performance is still up to the individual. Y'all just need to chill. ;)
Gotta say the number of comments about her over-analyzing are kinda disappointing. I'm a huge fan of the song and have watched tons of YT "vocal coach" reaction videos of it and they're all the same. "wow that was a great run" "wow she's really emoting" "wow i love her tone" and I agree with all of those! But this lady is the only one I've seen who lives up to the title of a vocal coach. I think most of the things she said were fair. I really hope most of the people criticizing the video aren't musicians; no performance is beyond criticism and not understanding that fact as a musician can be dangerous.
Thank you! I think people's love for her is blinding them to the technical things that could have been better in THIS particular performance. I think she is a phenomenal singer, but this was not my favorite performance from her.
She critiqued her wardrobe lol. She was definitely over analytical at small points. Confusing interpretation an what SHOULD BE isn't the same. Context matters, this was her first time performing the song an original music. There is parts that are her keeping it altogether. It's obvious the song was more emotional for her than what's she's seeing as a "performance". Sometimes the flaws are enhancements. Just like how some bands sound better with rough raw recordings to polished ones. But yea. Some of the comments don't know the point of a vocal coach channel lol.
I think she took it from the standpoint of teaching vocalist to preserve their voice. I'm sure she truly enjoyed the performance as we all did. I agree she did what a vocal coach would should do. She could've left out the ambiance and clothing critique though.
John Black Jr. When you’re a vocal coach analyzing a performance to help people understand what’s right or wrong, and what good technique is, you do care. Maybe, don’t ask a vocal coach to react to something if you might not like what she’s going to say?
I don’t like this critique very much. Yebba is very educated musically and aware of the choices she is making and her style is very unique. I understand you are critiquing her technique and choices here but trust me Yebba could have sung this song with all the choices you mentioned being tuned but the song would not be the same.
oh is she? then why would she dip her chin on low notes and crush her larynx? there are some things in this that are obviously not a choice. people are so biased about the music they love...someone points out a technical flaw to us for education sake and they jump on their back.
@@omaramer7022 i don't understand your point...what does standing still have to do with anything? that's not the point of my comment nor did the creator make any points at all about her movement or posture.
I think that perhaps this is a highly emotional performance for this artist... so when you are in that moment, technique may go right out the window to a certain extent. Her talent is obvious. The way she connects people to the story she is telling is incredible. The teacher is there to critique though. She comes off harsh because she seems to not emotionally connect to the song. That seems crazy, because most people can't even watch this without having some form of empathy! I might be wrong. Just an observation.
Vocal coach. Were you embarrassed by her wardrobe? I think that Abbey did exactly what she wanted to do in this particular song.😊 Vocal Coach; Not Fashion Advisor.(ijs)
Being a professional stage director is fine and dandy; yet Yebba's phenomenal, outrageous singing ability has zero to do with what she is wearing. I find Tara Simons a bit petty and self centered in a lot of her reactions. She also tends to be judgemental in her attitude and approach toward some, and I will leave it at that. I excused myself from watching. Be safe😷💯😷💯😷
@@ayyemoedc , right back at you my melanin queen🤗😷🤗😷 Each passing day I am at awe! In my 68 years, never would I have thought that what is happening in this country would be happening. I guess that was very naive on my part. People haven't changed , their masks are just coming off at record pace.
In music Rules are meant to be broken, and for good reason. She perfectly conveys her pain to the listener. It’s what makes the lyrics so believable. Artistically, it’s just so raw and beautiful! I wouldn’t dare change a thing!
Hypnotized was perfect to demonstrate her losing her mind, it's contextual. She's about to lose her my mind while talking to her man. She's painting the picture. She's purposely losing control, that's why it sounds beautiful. She can and will hit it, just keep listening.
I think that the imperfections that you point out are what makes this performance a masterpiece. It's not generic. It's not perfect. She conveys her emotions Sooooooooo much better this way.
OMG, what a hater! Yebba sang with tone, texture and emotional conviction. This song is stylized and the main focus was the emotion and technique dance with each other.
This is the difference between a young college singer who's performing in local theater vs. someone who's experienced life and known pain .... AND knows how to make her audience feel the pain she's wailing out. I LOVED all the cracks and quavers in her voice, as well as the trembling in her hands. The pain she was expressing seemed genuine to me -- mostly because of those cracks, quavers, trembling. So if you love the artist/song; yet were put off by the "vocal coach" do you hit the LIKE or the DISLIKE button?
How did she not cry watching that like she just missed the whole emotion and soul yebba put into that performance all of her cracks were so beautiful it was so raw
Unfortunately you didn't hear the song. spent time looking for imperfections an trying to correct them when its those imperfections that give us the raw emotion an realness to the performance. Maybe you could feel the song. Your like a robot.
Love when a vocal coach has to comment on someone’s clothing choice and vocal rawness because of their own brutal boringness! I feel like this vocal coach should also think about the genre of song and emotions behind the song...for instance...one size doesn’t fit all!
I disagree with some critic. Your technical position all make sense and are valid but this kind of artist and performance is not about sounding pretty or perfect from a technical POV. This is a raw, bluesy, soulful release that is full of emotion and grit. Every note wasn't meant to be perfected, although from her take on this song you can tell she is very capable. Her voice is a masterpiece. I can hear the soulful church roots in it, feel the emotion but she also is a gifted vocalist who has range that not many artists have or tap into in today's music scene. The only part I noticed was when she was doing her runs towards the end and fell a little flat on a note but the other choices she made were so true to the heartache of the song and a true example of putting pain into melodic form through vocals. She's an undeniable talent and one of my absolute favs now that I've heard some of her work. Her other song Evergreen is gorgeous too!
This is a vocal coach stand point not a reaction video, so of course she's going to get technical on the vocals. But even then she never devalued the emotion of the song. If the vocal critique (not that I think Abbey will watch it) would help the vocalist then all the better for her
@@esasan I'm aware it was a vocal coach, clearly in the title. I never said she spoke down on Abbey or the song. My comment wasn't just about the emotion of the song but about the type of singer who was performing it. This coach's approach is about making it sound pretty and this was not that type of song. It was about gut wrenching pain in a beautiful melody. I prefer this song to almost all songs I hear on the radio and other than her one flat note (which didn't matter anyways,) her vocal performance was just short of perfection.
@@jazzyjakeen9469 but she wasn't talking about making it pretty but ways in which you don't need to strain your voice in areas that sounded strained by incorporating technique that would not in Abbey's case devalue the performance but keep her on point health wise vocally (not that Abbey wasn't on point) but if her critiques can help benefit Abbey then all the better for her.
@@esasan You're not understanding. First things first, you don't have to agree with my comment but I won't change my opinion because you don't. To recap, this was not the song for that. When she gave examples, they sounded like the pretty version and didn't give nearly the same raw emotion that this song begged for. Abbey's approach was exactly what makes this song leaps and bounds beyond the competition and she doesn't sing every song in the exact same fashion. A true artist will know what approach to use. Her church roots and soulful tones fuel a lot of her styling and I've noticed she makes diff choices in diff songs so it's clear she has some training. As we agreed on, she is more than likely not going to see this and prob has a good team around her that would assist her if they believed she needed more vocal coaching. The start of my initial comment was that I understood her technical suggestions but that this song was not the average and didn't need them. You are free to write your own comment on this video and speak on how you think her critique was helpful, etc. Have a nice day!
@@jazzyjakeen9469 I ain't either agreeing or disagreeing with your comment because I to am a fan of Abbey and it's obvious abbeys roots vocally and how she sings, she's definitely had training whether it be in church (that gospel speaks even in this song) or anywhere else. But in saying that why isn't this song not one to dissect vocally, regardless of it being an emotional, soulful blusey song? Considering it was a song requested from viewers, a video the vocal coach has never seen so it wouldn't be biased also has some crazy soul riffs, technique in areas that was bomb and areas that could be improved on? This vid in my opinion since we all have one is perfect for a vocal coach to critique and dissect coz it shows what was good, what could be improved on and how to convey conviction and emotion vocally which the vocal coach brought up and discussed in throwing question to us on our thoughts. Only thing I thought was random in this vid was when she talked about the dress like wtf. But yeah you have a nice day to
I honestly cry every time i hear this song. Shes not singing, shes crying. Shes emoting the pain through her vocals. Its yhe kind of pain you would have to feel to know. And she resonated with the audience with those notes.
Abbey Smith (Yebba) is an amazing artist. Her voice and her emotions combine into art. I felt this critique was interesting but missed the artistry. I feet like if this voice teacher was a painting teacher, she would tell Picasso that his circle wasn't round enough and the eye is crooked. SMH
At the same time I love the way u are so technical about music, I can't understand how much emotionless u can be. This song is definetely about something she went through irl and the things u see as """mistakes""" are just her way of not crying a lot on stage. What she did there, was absolutely amazing in the feeling sector. No technique could be more impactful than the sentiment we experienced there.
I love Yebba, I myself, like the lows and highs me i consider it a technique, When I use the highs and low riffs, in what ever song it is, i attempt to bring what i feel into the song to leave part of me there.. shift the atmosphere.... Your professional input was very much appreciated. The comment on her attire, as an artist I attempt to get as comfortable as possible depending on the setting and place of the activity....smiling...I know you were not knocking her.. others may have had the same thought, just did not say it.....
Often times with soulful songs, that “stress” or “struggle” you hear is called emotion and the truth of the situation. You can’t “perfect” emotion and truth.
She was choking back her tears!! Its clear as day! Can anyone sing perfectly through tears? I think not!She did an amazing job!!!!! You could feel alllll that pain she felt during that song.. ❤❤🙏🏼🙏🏼
she wanted you to hear hypnotized like someone who is hypnotized that's where the "forced vibrato" came in, so she doesn't sound like every other artist ever
I agree with some of your critiques, but not a lot of it. You're talking about a live performance. Something that can't always be emulated to a perfect sound. Her emotions played a huge part in this song. A lot of these critiques you were giving failed to mention the emotion that she was feeling herself. Emotion is a major part to how someone sings a song. For that, I dislike your video. Every time you brought up emotion, you claimed she was "trying to get ME to feel her emotion" instead of "she has some deep emotions showing through this song" which is a huge difference. She isn't trying to get YOU to feel it, these are HER emotions, and each word she sings has a deep threaded meaning to it, which you failed to see. It's almost as if you're saying she has no reason to feel the way she does. Imagine you being hurt really bad, maybe a breakup, and then singing a song that brings back hurt or pain. Would you agree that YOUR voice would also not be at its prime? I agree with the lower tones critique, but the others, you failed to acknowledge her pain! Also, you're a vocal coach - Stop critiquing her wardrobe choices. It's RUDE! and it's not your place!
I appreciate what you’re trying to do here. I just ask that you please watch the video and feel this with her and please STOP PAUSING because you are missing so much feeling. If you watch it all the way through and just listen to her speak to you, I promise you will have constant chills.
Thank you for posting this and for putting yourself out there. I winced at the beginning when you were talking about how she doesn't look like she sounds, and how she would be perfect for The Voice. Being a heavy woman myself, it really hurts to hear comments like the ones you made. I liked your observations on vocals, and I understand that you are coming at it from a coaching standpoint. All in all, I think her beautiful voice and her beautiful appearance go perfectly together, and I thought this performance was transcendent.
Just wanted to say I love Yebba, and I love your critique. People don’t understand what your intention is with these videos apparently, but I see you and think you’re critiques are very intuitive and you are very well spoken! You help to understand the technical side of these performances. People need to know that Yebba sounded like she did in this performance by perfecting the technicalities of it first, and by doing that she was able to perform so emotionally the way they love. Also, how do people expect a Vocal Coach to demonstrate what techniques she’s describing without using her own voice?
@@robertjosephmaccready4820 Sorry being constructive ends when saying 'they're surprised by someone's voice after first seeing their appearance'. .Or critiquing the outfit she chose to wear - 2019.
This is the point when I get a little tired of technique. Having worked in classical music for quite a while, when singing is "technical" it tends to be boring. Listening to several yebba performances, there is not a single thing she does by accident, its purposely raw. She is by far the most talented singeri can think of today. She needs no critique.
That crack you talk about is the best part of the song... Sooo emoti3, it evokes something deep in someone... Have you ever yelled or cried until no sound came out... Thats the breaking point... So lovely.... Emotion will always trounce sound/vocals in singing
I honestly believe that her trailing off on that high head note was the most appropriate sound for the song, even if it wasn't intentional. What irked me was how suddenly and emotionally disconnected she went from a build-up to a quiet calm tone. Loved it anyway, definitely going to check out everethyng she released.
She's saying she's about to LOSE her MIND. Where is the stability in that?! Have you EVER had your heart broken? Can you remember the stages you went through? Can you remember how unstable your emotions were? For me, there were times I'd think about the person and anger set in to the point I was ready to go punch a hole through a wall, but I had to take a deep breath and pull myself together. I had to smile to wipe that rage off of my face. That's the reality of heartbreak. It's unstable, just like her vocals. So guess what that means? She did her job well in conveying this song. It's your job as the listener to be open to receiving it instead of looking for inconsistencies in a song that's not supposed to add up.
This performance was perfect to me for the feeling yebba was trying to convey. Everything doesn't need to be critiqued; for some settings, there is beauty and meaning within the imperfections that add depth and clarity.
I don’t understand why people are getting upset about a vocal coach talking about vocal techniques vs emotion. She is a vocal coach buddy, what did you want from this video?
Yebba moved my soul. Tears flowed out of heart but honestly, honesty is the best policy. Too many ppl lie. Giving false statements. But on the other hand these imperfections sound like painful wailing perfection is not a broken heart. These critiques are appreciated if it's possible for someone this good to improve. Because she's the best I've heard in so long.
You know, Tara, you are unique amongst the 'vocal coaches react to...' trend of youtubers. For you, each video has a completely different analysis with highly variable critiques and praises given, areas to improve, alternatives that may sound better, explaining reasons a singer may have chosen a particular way to approach a line and so on. I really enjoy your videos for this reason. Well done and good show.
Tara acknowledges the raw emotion and beauty of her voice and of this specific performance. But at the end of the day, Tara is a vocal coach and critiquing and explaining what’s happening and what could have been improved technically is literally the main point of the channel. Yebba’s incredible vocal skill and stylistic talent was not lost on Tara guys.
As a singer, we know our limits. Yebba’s lower notes weren’t full of struggle, they were intricately put. Also, the side note about her Outfit wasn’t needed. Overall good analysis.
I appreciated what one experienced vocal coach said, “it’s not about showing off the voice it’s about communication and that’s what great artists do. “
I think what would help ppl understand her vocal choices it would help to know that she is southern and used to singing gospel. The crack was intentional

Hey tara!! Thinking of checking out your video lessons :)))))) You should definitely take a look at "Evergreen" By yebba! I believe its about her late mom and its beautiful worth a listen :)
Fighting back tears is going to cause force, strain, cracks. This was not meant to be a technical performance.
So...Tara vocal points were right...
SOLDIER DRUM CHANNEL EXACTLY! Tara is missing the deliberate vocal qualities that create the vulnerability of the person, the up and down rifts.
@@jupitersmalls1507 And people enjoy a more vulnerable performance
This song is so raw and powerful there’s almost no point in critiquing the technical
aspects
Kashe628
You got a like from her IM GLAD I CAN CONFIRM SHE SAW ALL THE COMMENTS ABOUT THIS LOL THANK YOU
Exactly or her clothes! I have watched several reaction videos and not one time did anyone comment on her appearance! Which doesn’t matter ! So I guess your clothes effect your voice huh 🤔 first time on your channel definitely will be my last
@@Bunnyhopper1970 lol she’s a vocal/performance coach it all matters to her.
@@RheaGo12 well her appearance has nothing to do with her voice
The point is to understand what she’s doing. Yebba is highly technical, she knows exactly what to do to get every specific sound in her performances. It’s how she can switch between the breathy, raspy tone and that full, resonant sound, and the high head voice. Obviously the emotion is more important with this song, but to say there is no point in finding out what’s happening, as if it’s all just subconcious is wrong
Every criticism you gave is what made the performance so beautiful and raw
I was literally going to say the same thing. Everything she "critiqued" is what I love about this. Like she totally missed that she was basically on the verge of tears at some parts
Absolutely!!!
Yeeeah! I think the same. Being to technical with the voice is not good with this one
every criticism? come on now obviously you don't want to dip your jaw and crush your larynx when singing low notes...is she supposed to throw out all logic and reason just because you like the way she's singing? no...
I totally agree
Her appearance doesn’t match her voice? It matches perfectly. She’s beautiful, angelic and powerful. Exactly like her voice.
Thank you, I was upset by that comment, it had been made in another reaction video too. It is insulting, just because she is not skinny... silly, she's beautiful
This!
A perfect example of classically trained vs that Holy Ghost sanging. You either get it or you don’t.
Exactly and she didn’t get it
Straight Holy Spirit! She is gifted God and lived at Church!
Dont want to be a Vocal Teacher anymore After seeing this emotionally completely unconnected reaction to a masterful performance.
+1 @SophieCox
You’re the first reactor to this song that hasn’t been left speechless lol
She honestly thinks shes better at it clearly. Narcessism is something im sensing in her.
I was literally thinking that
Well, yeah, because there wasn’t anything in this performance to leave me or her speechless.
This woman is off the charts. Commenting on her wardrobe and backdrop. You get it or you don’t. This performance is pure emotion not technique.
The imperfections of this song and the way she looks is what makes it so beautiful....And successful!
🙌🏻
If this was technically perfect, I don't think people would love it as much as they do.
Also, not really sure what the point of commenting on how she's dressed was 😜
jay fine 100%!! This is 100% one of my favourite performances from anyone ever, it’s raw, and beautiful and soulful and humble and individual.
I love it! And the comments about how she is dressed, in my opinion are irrelevant as this is a reaction on the vocals not the styling! I’m glad I’m not the only one with this sort of opinion!
@@victorialouise9632 you forgot when the coach said yebba doesnt sound like she looks and would be a great contestant for the voice.
To be fair to Tara, wardrobe is a part of a vocal coach's job to help their students with.
I did. I watched two covers and they definitely fell flat because of the lack of vulnerability, and emotion
Being too perfect is what kills you as an artist.
This is where your art stops. This is where feelings stop.
This is where you become a machine that spits out notes correctly.
Your comment at 7:50 was very wrongly thought of.
I’m speaking as a Vocal Coach and Singer myself.
Patrick Hatem well said!
I think technically she was right
Your poor students
Man I was livid at that point. That "crack" was VERY creative, skilled and beautiful and Tara doesn't get anything about this performance
Okebaram E 100% agree! If this was a technically ‘perfect’ song, it wouldn’t be as loved as it is, as it’s almost robotic
at 7:50 - she was trying to express her losing her mind in the literal sense. It wasn't about hitting the note. It was honestly the most powerful part of her performance to me.
Exactly!! Losing your mind isn’t… beautiful or perfect.
@@ammanndyy exactly. The context of the song makes her delivery genius.
Exactly, I honestly don’t know how she couldn’t have picked up on that
She doesnt have an adele influence. She grew up n listening to gospel music particularly the clark sister. You want to her those runs yebba does listen to every single gospel singer. Gospel is such a small indsutry but everyone copies from it and doesnt give that genre its due credit
check out SoHyang, she's a gospel singer from South Korea, all of her work are full of Gospel.
and amazing vocalist too...
Look up videos of her singing (the coach), she really has no business with making tese mute criticisms
@@okebaram shes not bad though
Amen
This is just a review from a technical standpoint...so many butthurt ppl here
@@mocsimocsi8319 its not being butthurt when “experts” think their opinions are the only correct path.
I feel if she had "fixed" all the things you pointed out, the performance would've been vanilla.
She’s unbelievably gifted.
ty thought the same
Amen.
I think you failed to realize she’s basically for real crying during this performance. It’s a very personal song to her. So of course her technique isn’t perfect.
Okay and?
“A little rough there” & “vocal fried” yes it’s supposed to be rough! She is putting her heart and WHOLE SOUL into this performance. This is not meant to be critiqued like a broadway song where every note must hit perfectly. This is the only person I’ve ever seen that has not been astonished by this performance. These technicalities need to be overlooked for this raw, soulful, and emotion filled performance!! She has the special ability to connect and make you feel every word.
Hater 🤣🤣. She KILLED this performance
I appreciate you sharing your opinion!
There is a reason why you r only doing reaction videos on youtube.....lol
The way I hollered and laughed @ “sound like a Disney princess”🤣🤣🤣...but you’re 150% right. The parts of the song Tara reiterated the “proper way” was very bland, boring, and dull😕🤷🏾♀️
I respect your position but honestly i couldnt finish the whole video
I skipped through her talking so much smh
@@PrinceLeigh dude i was livid when she put down her clothing choice. She clearly doesn't understand the real meaning of music and what certain performances are about in terms of the hurt and pain... Ive seen another vocal coach cry at her performance and didnt make one bad critique cuz he said shes so imperfectly perfect... Its part of her style and her heartbreak.
I would just like to add that this video was filmed shortly after Yebba's mother commit suicide. So she is this song with so much emotion towards her mother.
I felt i was the only one who skipped the talks
She was literally on the verge of tears.. thats why she sounds like that u ,its not because she couldnt hit the note
As a professional, you need to also understand the pain of expererince she is saying....
All this technical stuff is kool and all that if you're a teacher. But I've watch her video damn near 50 times and EACH time I get emotional. Damn what this woman is saying. I wouldn't change one note Yebba sang. The little imperfections is what makes it so special and relate able. This ain't Opera.
She is a teacher tho
lmao this aint opera. she does stuff that isn't stylistic that just isn't right...like if you drop your chin while singing low you crush your larynx and you can't sing low nearly as well...she would only sound better with a couple corrections. think she's just supposed to teach people how to sing incorrectly because you like this video? what a ridiculous concept. if she said it was bad or something i'd be with you but she just made note of a couple things that she could have done that would have cost her voice far less to do what she wants...that's what learning to sing correctly is...it's not singing super straight and boring (though i've had to do that once or twice when i was the only singer in a band and had 3 sets to get through...r.i.p) it's about managing your voice the best you can...there is no reason to drop your chin while signing low...you're just going to muffle the sound...there is no stylistic benefit. why in the world should you not mention this? i do some things that cost a lot in a voice...like raspy shouts similar to bring me the horizon or other modern heavy metal groups...but there is a way to do it that's wayyyy better...would i complain "bro this ain't opera" if someone taught me the correct way to scream? of course not...that's what you're doing. besides maybe her critique on the really big vibrato on the line "look me in the eye" and the wardrobe comment everything was ways to do what she was doing with the exact same effect only healthier. air for example is the enemy of the vocal cords...you need support and vocal cord closure or you're going to wreck your voice singing like this all the time. air rushing through your cords dries out the mucosal membranes and that's bad...suddenly your falsetto will break...you won't be able to get into head voice...all kind of problems. does that mean this isn't a great performance? no of course not. but if you saw a powerlifter lifting a fuck ton of weight with kinda bad form does that mean you should teach that form? no...yeah maybe some people can pull it off and maybe they won't even get hurt like other people...but this is a vocal coach...she's not going to teach you to sing in ways that will hurt you and you're wrong if you want her too.
And Tara never said that.
She stopped it so many times that there's no way she could possibly feel the emotion in it. Her mind was not open from the beginning by judging her appearance and constantly critiquing every vocal "flaw." I've never seen Tara stop a video this many times 🙄
SAME
I think she has the ability to correct every "bad" thing you mentioned, or her "poor choices" with her voice. I just think, like you said at one point, she just didn't care. She was just feeling it and going for it best off her emotions. I don't think she wanted to have perfect technique. She was telling a story, not trying to be the best singer.
I think so too.
She would sing you under the table
Please don't go to a Baptist Church then. 😂😂
Ashley Moore period
EXACTLY! I grew up in Southern Baptist Churches so I understand exactly what you're saying and it's 100% on point..... Tara will not get it though.... at all. If she missed how powerful this performance is and where Yebba's influence came from, GOSPEL, then she's never understand your comment. It's a shame.
😂😂😂😭🤣🤣🗣️
Okurrr like the choir director be saying if you don’t feel it when u sing it feel your way back to the pews

How could she feel anything? She was a mess on X Factor. She wouldn't know talent if it hit her in the arm. She was straight hating lol
You completely missed the point of this song. If the best vocalist on Broadway sang this song with technical precision and followed your advice...this song would fall flat and be meaningless. I appreciate your critique. From a technical aspect, great comments. However, this performance was amazing.
I personally think she sounds way better than Adele🙌🏾🔥
Really??
Yes, really!
Tbh, I LOVE EVERY SINGLE “UNPERFECTED” run, low note, etc!! She has soul! Something vocal coaching can’t teach you😏
Yes YEBBA! She’s out of this world! You should react to her live performance of “Evergreen” 💓
she doesn’t sing what she looks like?!?!she’s beautiful and sings like an angel.
I think she meant that shes not black tbh I thought she was gon be black when I heard her voice too but she turned out to be white
During the high part that you didn’t I believe she said that she had started chocking up because this song means a lot to her
I love Yebba...and i mean i LOVE Yebba!
Nancy Reyes totally agree!!
Big Facts‼️💯💯
@ 7:48 she was crying so that's why she sounded like that
her voice cracked during her high note because she was choking back tears.. but the whole performance was very emotional & dirty for her voice. loved her voice throughout the entire thing.
Y'all just need to chill. ;)
Thank you!!!
THISSSS
I don't think Tara can feel anything... All of her chakras are screaming open us....
Agreed!
Can we please like this comment more and keep it at the top. LOL
Evan Belcher preach! I thought about the same thing.
💯💯
I liked when she said “hypnotized” cuz it showed anger and passion. I like a slow vibrato
It wasn't about the vibrato being slow, it was about it oscillating unevenly; aka tremolo.
@@InvisibleTacoMan but no one gives af about a tremelo when you're about to LOSE YOUR MIND. THAT was the point!!
@@babyswithrabies I completely disagree, she can do the song standing still but this all is a performance
@@yourdrunkaunt5409 Agreed. Seemed utterly unconnected.
Vocal coach. Were you embarrassed by her wardrobe?
I think that Abbey did exactly what she wanted to do in this particular song.😊
Vocal Coach; Not Fashion Advisor.(ijs)
Except that Tara is actually a professional stage director also. So she helps performers with outfits for events. lol
Fayerene Washington I respect your opinion. We can agree to disagree. Stay blessed and stay safe out here during time like this Queen Washington
@@ayyemoedc , right back at you my melanin queen🤗😷🤗😷
Each passing day I am at awe!
This is the first time I've watched this coach. Everything she criticized is what makes this song and performance so special.
Hypnotized was perfect to demonstrate her losing her mind, it's contextual. She's about to lose her my mind while talking to her man. She's painting the picture. She's purposely losing control, that's why it sounds beautiful. She can and will hit it, just keep listening.
And this is why it’s called soul music...it’s not perfect but it’s from the heart
How did she not cry watching that like she just missed the whole emotion and soul yebba put into that performance all of her cracks were so beautiful it was so raw
i gotta watch terrell's reaction after this just to make me feel hype again
gabyitzel right
Right!!! And I just watched it last night.
She did it 😂😂😂
She’s like a trillion times better singer than you’ll ever be. Keep up the good work though! Much love x
Lmaooo DRAG HER‼️‼️‼️
Love how your comparing yourself to Her in quite a few sections of your critique 😂😂😂😂😂 dream on girl
She does that ..lol.
Watch her x factor audition...u will lose all respect
Yes lawd. She wishes.
Unfortunately you didn't hear the song. spent time looking for imperfections an trying to correct them when its those imperfections that give us the raw emotion an realness to the performance. Maybe you could feel the song. Your like a robot.
I agree she was doing the most this song brought me to tears the fact she had pain behind this songs
Love when a vocal coach has to comment on someone’s clothing choice and vocal rawness because of their own brutal boringness! I feel like this vocal coach should also think about the genre of song and emotions behind the song...for instance...one size doesn’t fit all!
"Coffee Shoppy", what a back handed sort of compliment.
Right ✅
The imperfections makes her voice the best!
The so called "rough" was pure church Gospel. Pentacostal you dig? But I don't think you get it.
Roz
She ant been throw nothing that why she don’t get it
Abbey Smith (Yebba) is an amazing artist. Her voice and her emotions combine into art. I felt this critique was interesting but missed the artistry. I feet like if this voice teacher was a painting teacher, she would tell Picasso that his circle wasn't round enough and the eye is crooked. SMH
I think the imperfections make everything in the song perfect.
I happen to totally love the raspyness of her voice. The rawness invokes more emotion to me
I love Yebba, I myself, like the lows and highs me i consider it a technique, When I use the highs and low riffs, in what ever song it is, i attempt to bring what i feel into the song to leave part of me there.. shift the atmosphere....
Carl Von Sirls Then again, it was a side note and an opinion. Also, presentation is important to a degree.
I appreciate what you’re trying to do here. I just ask that you please watch the video and feel this with her and please STOP PAUSING because you are missing so much feeling. If you watch it all the way through and just listen to her speak to you, I promise you will have constant chills.
I thought I was just high, but seeing these comments let’s me know that you are definitely tweakin’
NeekFeek Finally someone who has a brain. All these children have been all in a fuss because a vocal coach is giving yebba constructive criticism.
This song is one I just feel in my soul isn’t meant to be “technically” criticized but just maybe like heard.
You are so envious
This is my favourite musical performance for years. It’s imperfectly perfect 10/10
React to Yebba's cover with clark beckham of Gravity
Tara acknowledges the raw emotion and beauty of her voice and of this specific performance. But at the end of the day, Tara is a vocal coach and critiquing and explaining what’s happening and what could have been improved technically is literally the main point of the channel. Yebba’s incredible vocal skill and stylistic talent was not lost on Tara guys.
Yes to all of that! Thank u!
