Stop collecting wild caught species, i am from south india, all u guys know about torpedo barb, once it was abundant in our streams now it have almost dissappeared, only due to unethical fishing.....
Of course both of you have a valid point and in many places aquarium fish shouldn’t be collected because of so many reasons but the fact of it is that in places like the amazon people will do any work to make money, and without the aquarium trade in these places the wild amazon habitats would be destroyed by overfishing for food, gold-mining, agriculture and poaching other rarer species. But by aquarists working with the collectors it is in their best interest for the fish collectors to sustain the environment so the aquarium fish can reproduce and so they can keep collecting sustainably. I’m not saying that every fish should be wild caught but there are definitely cases where it should be applied.
@@maxs2521 true, i think it's just difficult for stores or customers to decide which wild caught are not endangering the wild populations. often times the iucn red list or wherever the species is listed may not be updated for a long time. Take Glossolepis Wanamensis, for example, declared endangered in 1996 i believe on the iucn red list, and it hasn't been updated since. but it is thought to be extinct in the wild. This fish was pushed to extinction in the wild from invasive species, mostly a tilapia species. Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi is another one that is thought to be endangered but may still be wild caught. thats why many people just prefer captive bred. not enough information.
Discus capturing is seasonal and they only take a small percentage of what's in there river systems. The handling is quite sufficient and does no harm to them. 2 to 3 weeks in good clean water in a holding tank with anti parasitic and general tonic treatment and they will look quality fish.
The worst part? People who buy these fish ignore that the come from deep murky waters...and place them in intensely lit plant aquariums with crystal clear waters that stresses the fish until they become ill..then die. At least know that they don't like that set up before you end up killing them.
+Echo Tankster look dude, my point is : the last discus they imported was in 1990, they have bread millions of them (more than 200000 in stock) if they catch them all in the wild, it will probably be a problem for the ecosystem... nowadays there are many more colours and variations in breaded in captivity (asian, german...) so why put wild discus in your tank? but no problem if you have another option on that... it your right as a human being.
Tom Bultynck If I ever were to buy a Discus I would buy it wild. I don't care about the over-bred stuff. In fact if I could most of my fish would be wild caught.
There are an awful lot of comments here, made by people with limited English skills but also limited thinking skills and limited experience. I've been to South America and I've seen what goes on. Discus are very difficult to catch, there's no risk to the population from collectors. There is far more risk from the loggers, miners and all that goes with industrialization. Discus have been sustainbly collected for roughly 80 years. There are still plenty of Discus left in the wild. So stop spouting off about your moral superiority and try learning a few facts.
beautiful fish would be dead if it weren't for wild collecting. considering where wild collecting is allowed the amazon is healthier cause the people living there don't have to turn to things like mining that destroy the amazon.

there is plenty of reason to buy these fish.the biggest is protecting their habitat by supporting a sustainable industry. captive bred fish ironically is killing the amazon by making people turn to income sources like palm oil farming, mining, logging, ect.

Shame every single one of those fish died I'd never seen a collecting so harsh before And handling a discus with dry hands.. Immediately strips the slime layer Dead fish
You have no idea how many of those died, what if all survived? How many have you seen? 2? 3? If you've seen more you must have been specifically looking for those, why? Wow green discus is like alien angel very beautiful
That's some beautiful fish

Now I understand why they get so stressed out. They go through a lot of traveling and handling.
I am a fish hobbyist and love discus. But I won't buy any wild fish and keep them in my tank. They belong to wild, so please keep them at their home.
But when you cannot find a wild variety farm bred? Try buy a wildform guppy for example in a shop......
That's just ignorance. Theres no reason you cant keep wild versions. They are not threatened
ImpsMyPimp .... everything is threatened except viruses and jellyfish.
oakstgorillas not everything is threatened you bum.
